one of my very least favorite "jokes" is people making fin of qin su for "not knowing her husband is gay" or the array of fics where he's zero eprcent interested in her from the jump. Like way to take out all the tragedy in service of biphobia

GODDDDDD, I saw that in the same set of post notes that set me off yesterday--"durr hurr, poor girl got tricked into marrying this gay guy." Like, HOW? The Jin clan are by far the wealthiest and most powerful sect, and the Qin clan is one of their bannermen, and QCY and JGS are buddies. If JGY were a mustache-twirling villain trying to boost his status with an advantageous marriage and/or a gay man desperate for a beard, he has better options than a clan of middling wealth and significance that is already under Lanling's sphere of influence.

And they both had to fight for this marriage to happen! "QS was tricked into marrying him" is wild to me, because IIRC it says RIGHT THERE that she took the initiative in this relationship! A relationship that neither her father nor his was super enthused about! JGY was out here bothering JGS for this! JGY, the guy who famously does atrocities if daddy says jump, worked with QS to make sure this marriage happened! After all, while QS has the most to lose if the pregnancy plan goes south, JGY's not totally off the hook either; JGS could've very well punished him to appease QCY. Why the hell would he go through ANY of that if he didn't love her?

Like... you could maybe make a case for him not being attracted to her in CQL, where it's implied that he didn't sleep with her until their wedding night and he hates every second of it a choice that haunts me every day because what the fuck what the FUCK. But even there, he states that he pushed for the marriage, and feared to call it off in part because he'd "spent so much effort, went through such lengths to ask Qin Cangye for permission to marry his daughter... I had finally satisfied both Qin Cangye and Jin Guangshan." So even here he'd worked for it! Potentially antagonizing two noblemen, one of whom is his father the Chief Cultivator, is not worth the potential material benefits here! Even here, the only explanation that makes sense is that he loves her!

Which, you know, he says himself that he does. He says that he loves her to Lan Xichen's face, even, so like... pretty weird lie for a gay guy to tell his boyfriend. And if JGY were lying about everything... wouldn't he think of something better? He could throw QS under the bus and say she forced him. He could say the marriage was his father's idea and JGS directly ordered him to marry her. Both of these options are more readily understandable (and paint him as truly without recourse) than "I felt trapped by the potential ramifications of defying social expectations."

Now, people can write what they want when it comes to fic; if you're writing a canon divergence fix-it, then yeah, an easy way to avoid the incest is to have him simply not into women at all. You can even make a compelling case for comphet that he doesn't recognize for what it is until it's too late if you try hard enough. But in terms of broader trends rather than individual fic, and given the fandom trends of erasing WWX's attraction to women across all canons, or ignoring WQ's whole situation with JC in CQL canon to make her a Mean Lesbian(TM)... are you sure there's not biphobia at play? Are you really sure?

"WWX needs to learn how to let himself be happy" - wtf?

When did WWX show otherwise in canon? He found joy in the simplest of things before everything went to shit! He wandered around the CR picking fucking flowers, lounged around as he chewed on a long stalk of grass, hunted, teased LWJ and had an absolute ball! Then he charmed locals, played in the lakes and focused on his training back at LP. Yes, he was abused, but WWX always tried to focus on the positives - no matter how bleak everything was.

But he never denied himself happiness. I really don't get where this fanon bs take comes from. The dude had comphet so pardon him for not fully realising his feelings until he finally had time to examine them in his own time (sect tension and a fucking war aren't going to help this!).

But the minute he realises his feelings, he pursues LWJ! To the point he wants and he takes, even though he knows sleeping with LWJ while he might be drunk (he's not, he's sobered up by this point, but WWX assumed not) is not really the right thing to do. Which all ends up as a huge misunderstanding, but is soon smoothed over thankfully. Those scenes clearly show us WWX can and will chase after what makes him happy.

WWX never denied himself happiness, he just never had the opportunity to do so until his second life. WWX never denied himself anything, he just didn't know LWJ was even an option!

comphet's not for everyone as a trope, for sure! i think because there's a period of the canon where wwx believes he's straight, some authors/artists like to play with the dramatic irony of that, particularly if they themselves have had a similar sexuality journey that they can relate it to, but i can totally see why it's not everyone's cup of tea

i think speculating about character's sexualities in mdzs is kind of an exercise in pointlessness tbh

it is a canon fact that wwx does not feel attracted to anyone other than lwj. but the reason behind this is not because mxtx intended to write him with any particular sexuality imo but because she has stated many times that the main pairing, in her view, cannot ever be broken up. she has also said that she dislikes writing side romances, and that she also dislikes shoehorning in romances just for the sake of them being there. it's also just a typical romance trope that leads are never into anyone other than each other. knowing this about mxtx's writing style, why would she want to write about either wwx or lwj being attracted to anyone other than each other?

it'd give readers the wrong ideas (judging by her authors notes, she was extremely concerned about this), and it'd either take a lot of time and effort to write, or just be poorly written & there for no reason at all.

tldr, the reason wx are not attracted to other people is because of mxtx's writing habits and genre conventions, not sexuality.

sometimes i feel like i’m on the reverse opinions regarding some popular headcanons for wx, cause like, personally i can totally see lwj having had his eye caught by some beautiful boy before wwx, he just never thought much of it. “he’s beautiful and has a nice personality” but not worth worrying about and soon that attraction faded. lwj never seemed surprised that he fell for another boy, he seemed surprised for falling in love with the worst boy a Lan could possibly fall for

wwx on the other hand? that boy grew up surrounded by beautiful shidi and shimei, he was the handsome da-shixiong who teases and flirts around, he’s had Many opportunities to be the frivolous teenager he pretends to be and give his first kiss in a dare, lose sleep over a shidi with a beautiful smile, etc etc. but nope! that boy saved his first kiss until it was taken at age 20, and as far as we know he never felt anything for anyone until lwj came around, which started by some fascination and fondness and slowly developed into love as their friendship strenghtened throughout his two different lives, and all of this caught him off-guard! he was never prepared!!

which is why, for me personally, for AUs where wx meet later in life, i can totally see lwj having some short past relationships while wwx just “never really worked after a first date, but we’re still friends”, and both just oh so happen to never want to date other people after becoming friends. oh i wonder why!!

What do you think would have happened, had LWJ made his feelings for WWX clear in WWX's first life (I mean before it all went to hell and WWX could actually think clearly). Like many blame WX not happening sooner on his moral failure of not communicating but I'm honestly not so sure? I have doubts anything romantic could have happened. Tbh, at the time WWX didn't seem to be ready to recognise the nature of his crush/feelings for LWJ. Sadly, comphet is not something that is easily overcome by a love confession

My opinion is neither of them were ready at that point and them getting together then would've actually caused them more pain than canon did. WWX wasn't in the right space, forget comphet, his life was sheer mess and he had too many responsibilities to care for love. His environment, even before the whole Wen mess, was hostile.

LWJ loved WWX but he didn't necessarily accept him in his entirety as it did in the second life. There are too many outside factors standing in their way before WWX's demise and resurrection. There was communication failure but I think, even if LWJ was willing to communicate, he wouldn't at this point. His feelings for WWX were a little too uncertain and less grounded in reality than they were during WWX's second life. LWJ had to catch up to WWX, honestly, before they could be on the same mental footing. I'm not talking about their romantic feelings, but their decisiveness and confidence in their instincts when faced with crisis.

Honestly my biggest issue with fandom is people who head-canon Wei Ying as oblivious. He might not realize Lan Zhan's feelings until they're explicitly stated to him, but he can't really blamed for that. He's aware of his feelings for Lan Zhan pretty early on, but is unsure of Lan Zhan's affections for him understandably. Can fandom just stop calling Wei Ying an oblivious dumbass when he quite literally is the opposite?

When he's starting to feel comfortable and allows himself to fall out of the tree into LWJ's arms and bask in the warmth of their mutual intimacy jc busts in and goes on a homophobic rant. It's interesting to me that people think jc didn't influence WWX's perception of LWJ's feelings towards him at all, when WWX understood jc enough to want to hide anything soft between himself and LWJ from jiang cheng's homophobic ass:

What do you think about wwx being “canonical” bisexual?

i think that unless a character uses the word bisexual it's hard to talk about it being "canonical", especially because in his case his flirting with girls in his youth can be interpreted as both genuine interest in women and comphet behaviour. we don't see wwx have an equivalent romantic and/or sexual relationship with a woman either, since lwj is his first love. as far as i remember we don't have a word of god confirmation either (though i might be mistaken). I mean, i don't even think we can really say definitively that lwj is 'canonically gay' versus bisexual tbh 🤷‍♂️ like maybe these distinctions are not really that important and we don't need a "canon" stamp because at the end of the day we know for sure they are canonically queer and people can choose the interpretation they prefer or which in their opinion is more well-supported by the text when it comes to specific labels

16. Hello! Hoping to find a fic where Meng Yao I think is the main character. Modern AU, the ensemble are nurses/doctors. Meng Yao is a nurse, but like the head or charge nurse - he points out you can tell bc he's wearing a particular color of scrubs (yellow?). The plot had to do with people actually protecting him for once and his father trying to pin his own mal practice (or possibly Jin Zixun's) on Meng Yao. But Nie Huisang manages to save the day by "stumbling across" records that proved it was Jin Guangshan/Zixun at fault.

my main thing about sbwy is if i’m remembering right it kinda started as a joke based on the whole wwx is oblivious mischaracterization on twitter. i’ve kinda made my peace with oblivious wwx since it’s so prevalent in the fandom. so when i first started to see sbwy tweets and headcanons it didn’t bother me too much because i saw it as just another flavor of oblivious wwx, but as time went on the sbwy tweets and head canons just became more and more ridiculous. my main problem is when they say this characterization is canon, even book canon. i saw someone say if people don’t want to read about comphet wwx then they shouldn’t read the novel then. even if novel wwx could be described as comphet i’m sure even wwx would have realized he wasn’t straight long before he continued acting how these people head canon him as acting in modern settings.

And that's all I can really say, it's a simple lack of understanding what the characters actually are within the work itself. There is only so much personal interpretation can pass for when it comes to actual analysis. I can say Wei Wuxian also def knew everything about sex despite being a virgin, but the actual story doesn't ever support that and that's what actual character cues are for. But I'll take what is reading comprehension for 500 again please.

I’m a little confused to realise that some people interpret MDZS as just. Having gay marriage. Like as a general, actively legalized thing. It isn’t really gone into explicitly so I guess it’s a valid reading? It’s not against canon? (canon doesn’t state they CAN’T shapeshift into seagulls) But I took for granted, it always seemed obvious to me that LWJ and WWX had Had Enough and also were influential enough that they just went around telling people they were married now and nobody said boo about it. That it was very clear that LWJ would have walked rather than let anybody tell him they weren’t married.

It’s just such a weird take to me and I could be wrong but it feels like it’s coming from younger people who don’t remember very recently when gay marriage wasn’t legal anywhere, nevermind the many many places it still isn’t, and. People still decided they were married. Queer people had ceremonies and said vows or just called each other husbands or wives. Queer people have always done that, actually. The law isn’t the only thing that makes a marriage.

Baby LWJ was upset about realising his sexuality. WWX suffered from comphet. They overcame society’s disapproval, decided to be true to themselves, and got married no matter what anybody else has to say about it. Isn’t that so much more wonderful and inspiring and powerful than this homophobia-free AU? I don’t get it. Think of all the baby gay cultivators who find out that Hanguang Jun and the YiLing Patriarch are married and obnoxiously affectionate and go on night hunts with their kid. Think of the hope on their little gay faces. Think of the next generation of queer kids insisting on getting married to each other, and Hanguang Jun and the YiLing Patriarch backing them up.

AUs where their political marriage fixes the plot are fun in their own way, but interpreting canon that way doesn’t sit right with me. Apart from anything else, the plot would in fact have been quite different if that were the case. But also... idk, it makes me feel tense in a way I can’t put into words. Ignoring the reality, putting a homophobia-free world into this fairytale “don’t question the logic” realm, makes the real world feel a little more hopeless.

I can totally explain a bit of my thinking behind seeing lwj as autistic and wwx as autistic/adhd!! Before I get into specifics though, let me preface with where I’m coming from. I first saw CQL and then read the EXR translation of the novel. I prefer MDZS to CQL, but also want to acknowledge that because I do not read/speak Mandarin I am inherently experiencing this story second-hand and therefore am probably missing out on a lot of nuances. I am trying to learn Mandarin, but it will be a long time before I am even a little close to fluent lol.

Another preface- obviously not all autistic people present in the same way, and many of the things that I will mention are not solely specific to autistic people either. It’s one of those things where all of it added up together points towards asd, but each one individually would not on its own indicate asd, you know? Also, I will say that many of the things I picked up on for both characters are autistic traits that many autistic people have vs the clinical characteristics (much like most of the case I could make for wwx’s adhd would be adhd traits he has rather than symptoms that would lead to a real-world diagnosis.) Edit: OH! I almost forgot to say, that also all of these traits I’m listing are from a western perspective, and I would LOVE to read more about how autism presents in different cultures and to see conversations between autistc Chinese people specifically, so as to see if these traits are specific to western autistic people or not, but again, I do not speak Mandarin or Cantonese or any other Chinese dialect, so that’s a little inaccessible for me atm.

Ok, SO, for both characters I would list: strong sense of justice, lack of care for society’s opinion (I feel like it could be argued that lwj does to a certain point, but imo he operates more from what he morally considers to be correct and from a place of familial duty vs catering to the opinion of society at large), and then more vaguely, they both seem to be “nerdy” (this doesnt feel like the most accurate term, especially because it's not like being scholarly is specific to their characters, especially in ancient fantasy China- it’s more that their particular hmmm, flavor?? of love of knowledge feels very neurodivergent to me, vs like, being scholarly because it’s the thing that is expected of a Young Master, if that makes any sense at all- like the difference btwn someone getting an engineering degree because it is expected of them vs because they genuinely love engineering), and lastly for both- I would say that they are canonically kinky, and while I can’t cite any statistics, there’s a pretty high correlation between being autistic and being into kink. Obviously, not every person who is not vanilla is autistic, and not every autistic person is into kink…….but there is a high correlation.

For lwj specifically, the things that made me think he might be autistic are his lack of outward emoting combined with his depth and breadth of emotions, how he seems to thrive in and quite enjoy the very structured environment he grew up in, and then the last one off the top of my head (side note, I feel like a week from now I’m going to randomly think of other examples lol) I’m not actually sure IS an example, because I know (thanks to the awesome post from hunxi that you linked to that I had read previously) that his succintness does not equal autism, but I do kind of feel like it is very autistic to Always be so formal and to Always talk in textbook perfect language.

For wwx, I also think he likely has CPTSD! I’m not going to list anything for adhd or cptsd since we both agree on those :) As far as being autistic goes, there is, of course, the high prevalence of adhd/asd comorbidity. For specifc traits- while autism can show up as lack of facial expressions/tone, it can also show up as being overly exuberant and overexpressive. Especially for younger autistic children this can show up as being overly friendly/no boundaries w/ strangers (just?? going home with a random man who says he knew wwx’s parents???), making unusual connections that others do not can be both asd and adhd, his disregard for social status (disregard might be a strong word, and also I feel like this might be one of those things that got lost in translation and if I had read the original text I might have a different opinon, but what I mean here is the way that often autistic people learn certain social rules and try their best to follow them, but often do not pick up on specifics related to social hierarchy that are not spelled out for them- I think jyl’s take down of jin zixun is a great example of the /oppossite/ of what I’m talking about, and is a very neurotypical interaction. An example also of what I mean by disregard for social hierarchy, but from my own life, is how I’ve reflected on past convos w/ my boss only to realize that what I thought was just an interesting conversation about our opinons on a particular subject was actually them trying to tell-me-as-my-boss something they wanted me to do. We ended up doing things the way I wanted to do them because I didn’t realize that they were telling me to do something because they didnt explicitly say so, and because I just don’t pick up on when people are saying something from a social hierarchy pov. Idk if this makes sense or not, so I’m happy to try to expand if you would like me to. I feel like wwx could be described as having alexithymia, which is very common in autistic people, but could also be due to his cptsd. And then, I don’t feel like this is a true point because it is kind of based on headcanon? but wwx feels very demisexual to me, which is much more common for autistic people than it is for allistic people. But him being demi is not canon, just my perception of him (I see him as demisexual gay w/ massive comphet, but I know lots of people see him as bi, which also totally makes sense!!)

Tbh, I’m having a harder time than I thought I would listing wwx specifics. I might go through the book sometime this weekend and see if there are specific moments that pop out at me, but tbh w/ him its more that he Feels very adhd/asd to me?? Idk, I was diagnosed w/ adhd when I was 8, and all 4 of my siblings plus my father have offical adhd diagnoses. I’m 29 now and was only diagnosed as autistic earlier this year.  All of my close friends have always been either adhd, asd, or adhd/asd. There have been multiple people I have met that I’ve suspected were neurodivergent who have later told me they started looking into it and are now seeking formal diagnoses. I mention these things, only to give full context when I say that I have spent a lot of time observing the differences between interacting with neurotypicals and neurodivergents. I mean, obviously, it’s possible that I could just be projecting, but to me, Wwx gives off late-diagnosed/heavy masker autism/adhd combo vibes. Again, maybe I am projecting, but I did try to analyze whether I was or not previously, and determined that since in the past with other favorite characters (who I probably share more similarities in personality with) I did not feel like they were neurodivergent, so I figured that probably I wasn’t? That feels like a very convoluted sentence, but what I mean is that I have not thought that about other characters who have been my fav, so I figured that while I do project in certain areas that this particular area probably wasn’t one of them. Or, to say it in yet another way, since i did not project any of my neurodivergencies on past favorite characters, I figured I probably didn’t start doing so now.

I would love to hear more of your perspective on this, particularly because I worry that I do not have the cultural touchstones to realize when something wwx or lwj is doing is not actually a sign of being neurodivergent. I try my best to research things I don’t know about and to listen to fans who actually do have that cultural understanding, but there’s only so much I can look into on my own when I only speak/read english. And also, I love mdzs and I love talking about both adhd and autism, so I’m glad to talk about these subjects with someone else who also likes all of those topics :) Sorry for sending a book of a response and also I hope you are having a great day!!

I almost want to ask you to come forward so we can take this convo elsewhere for a more nuanced discussion bc you’ve already hit upon an issue that’s been holding me back from making a big blathering masterpost on the matter - that the ND experience is so unique and individual, and no one person can dictate someone else’s experience. at the end of the day, if you personally relate to these characters and gain more understanding of yourself and your experiences from them, who am I to take that away from you?

in a public space though I have to make the discussion very broad in order to accurately contextualize these issues, bc in typical autistic fashion I feel morally compelled to Do My Best and Get It Right even as the masses show no inclination of returning the favor, so apologies for the boring backstories I have to get out of the way before we can approach anything resembling new ground.

first from a diagnostic standpoint, while I recognize the traits you listed (and appreciate your clearly nuanced understanding of ND expressions) and would find value in exploring them in a personal context, they are not unique to adhd and/or autism and wouldn’t constitute a basis for diagnosis in a clinical setting. I know that's probably beside the point for this anon, but there's enough edgy teens hoarding labels out there without tacit encouragement from scientists (yes I am technically a scientist, even though my ideologies these days range from conventional to... wildly esoteric, shall we say)

from a cultural standpoint, it’s important for me to emphasize that the concept of neurodivergence is a uniquely western notion. for those unfamiliar, the term 'neurodiversity' was only coined in 1998. I was born in 1991. I existed for a whole 7 years as an autistic person before the idea of being neurodivergent was even a thing. this ND acceptance thing is very, very new - people were not making tiktok confessionals about their adhd diagnosis journeys when I was growing up.

china, like most asian countries, is about 20 years or more behind on just about every social issue compared with western countries. to better illustrate, the experience of being ND in china falls much closer to the conventional experience of disability (i.e. being eugenicized out of existence) than the tentative ND acceptance movement that’s been kickstarted in the past 20 years in the anglosphere.

safe to say, there is no ND coding going on in chinese media. characters are either explicitly ND or they're not. there's no basis for a creator subtly inducing ND-like traits in a character, because there's no such thing as ND awareness in the cultural context of where mdzs was written and consumed. any resemblance is purely accidental, as they say.

as to how this resemblance could exist - I could go into the layers and layers of historical, cultural, social and religious context that make up these characters and the xianxia genre as a whole. for this anon in particular i'm happy to, because they've done the work. please please get in touch in some way where we can have a fully fleshed out chat if you're interested in taking this further, I realize i’ve basically addressed none of the finer points you’ve raised but honestly it’s another level of discussion to be had that cannot be summarized in one blog post haha.
