Some marinelings have moved into my basement (seriously those little guys get EVERYWHERE) and I was waiting for chapter markings to start coming in before i decided what to do with them. I'd have to handle them differently if they were loyalist/renegade/chaos/whatever after all. Well some green has started forming on their armor and it looks like I have some baby Salamanders (not enough incense or "secret stashes" to be Dark Angels lmao)

Any advice on how to proceed? I was going to call a shelter but they are awfully cute and I'm getting attached. Plus finding a no-kill, loyalist only shelter is so difficult. One place I visited had Night Lords all over the place and know that would just stress the little guys out! Do I need to build a forge in my house to keep them? Fireproofing? I read one forum where a person said they let their Salamanders hang out in their oven but that doesn't seem safe...

Also relevant that I have some xenos packs at home. Necrons and Tyranids live together shockingly well since the nids can't digest metal. And the mushrooms in my backyard turned out to be orks, which I was worried about but fighting them has actually been great enrichment for everyone. I'm worried that introducing space marines into this little ecosystem will mess everything up! Help!!

Aww, congradulations! Baby Salamanders are sooo cute! The little ones will need lots of heat to develop properly, as their wild ancestors lived in active volcano areas. I reccomend either setting up a forge, metalworking is great Salamander enrichment, or taking your Marinelings to play in your nearest factory with an industrial furnace. Ovens work, but don't let them play with the gas valves. They might accidently blow up the house. Definitely invest in fireproofing the house, though. Contrary to popular belief, Astartes can be housed with xenos, they love to fight, and as long as it's supervised, once the babies are old enough they can be allowed to play with the Orks. If you had any Eldar, it'd be a different story. Never house Eldar with Salamanders.

Salamanders need lots of snuggles and affection, or they may become depressed. They'll be at their happiest when you spend time with them and give them hugs❤️

Monster Hunter World finished main story thoughts:

- Game is super good, an easy reccomend for anyone really. Action-rpg fans who enjoy building their character, armor and stats will like it. Entire game that consists of boss battles is just a great formula in general, the combat feels very good, monster designs are top notch. The game is a must-play for every monster-hunter genre fan for sure.

- 60 hours later, and I am Still Amazed How Good The Locations Are. They are beautiful, they are complex, the terrain is never flat, and they never feel like 'a bunch or arenas for fights connected with corridors'. Ancient Forest and Rotten Vale are easily the favourites here, Wastes gets third place. I think it is very beautiful, but easily overlooked out of all the other locations. Recess is beautiful, but a bit bland for me, and Highlands, while gorgeous, are just such a traversal hassle I try to avoid them.

- Final four bosses are not nearly as fun to fight, even when you combine them all together, as a single Nergigante bossfight. Nergigante is the true boss of the game, and I can easily understand why fans love him so much.

Teostra you just cool-drink or outheal. Vaal Hazak, while he has extremely good and creepy aesthetics and the best presentation out of all these elder dragons (he even outclasses Nergi and Xeno in terms of presentarion in my opinion), I beat him first try, while his half-hp debuff was on me.

Technically, I do cheat cause I installed unlimited consumables, so no healing flasks limit for me. Still, having a limited amount of healing items doesn't make the boss harder, it makes it frustrating and adds on unnecessary grind before you fight him. Vaal in terms of combat is just a walking hitbox, really, I didn't even faint once, and again, his half-hp debuff was working cause I didn't bring the item to cancel it. I am not a super skilled player, I am lazy and technically do cheat, but still beat him first try.

None of this mattered to Nergi, that bastard wiped the floor with me multiple times.

And I don't even want to talk about Kushala. Just no. I want to...at least interview the designer who created that bossfight, cause what the Hell was going on in his head. Did (s)he playtest this boss even Once??? This fight is criminally bad in my opinion, like, really freakin bad, because it is simply boring.

Xeno was cool but...again, a giant hitbox really. The presentation is great, and I reckon this fight is much more fun in multiplayer, but as it was I just peacefully stood underneath the belly and Xiva couldn't hit me once. Looks menacing, but the fight itself was boring. Not as nearly as bad as Kushala disaster, but still boring. Beat first try with 1 faint.

- The real hero of the game is my kitty squire. That boy faced horrors thousands his size, literally, in case of Xeno maybe even millions, and never Once backed down. All while never once asking for anything in return or taking any honours. Rootbeer was jokingly named because I didn't think much of palicos when I started the game, but he is the real Monster Hunter here, while I gracelessly bask in his honour.

Thank you Rootbeer for your service. I will strive to be as powerful and brave as you are.

- Somehow I never mentioned this, but the music in the game is also great. Really really good and specific monsters have very distinct tunes, so you know they are coming even before they enter the actual arena. Also the ambient sounds - bird singing, water running, monsters walking about, are just...so good. I genuinely booted up a game one time I really needed to calm down, picked some gear with stealth and walked/ran around the Ancient Forest for an hour. I will gladly listen to MHW locations ASMR videos. Never have I played a game where nature sounded so true, whimsical and beautiful.

- Numbers-wise I think the game is all over the place. Low to High rank transition is especially rough, cause you're very underpowered for new monster damage levels, are underpowered yourself (sharpness meter is the biggest issue here in my opinio) and you need to Continuously grind for the new gear. And then you need to grind for upgrade materials. Basically, this is where the mmo-ish nature or ambitions of capcom shine their true colours.

I have hunted 15 odogarons. I still don't have his full high level gear set cause I need gems. Also I finished the game without even upgrading to the final odogaron glaive form, cause again GEMS. Either the glaive-crit dmg build is busted or smth, I dunno. Why would you even need another weapon tier level if you are already destroying every monster in the game, which, I don't think scale with the hunter level, cause I keep butchering them in less than 30 mins when I need to. Anyway, numbers in this game are weird.

- For a game that showed me a new level of hand-holding, more like hand-cuffing, tutorials, this game does not explain shit. At all. You need a wiki and 30 youtube guides to see the entire moveset of your weapon, cause there is no united moveset list to read. You need a guide for the canteen, cause this thing is extremely useful, but it's help is veiled behind cryptic messages like 'wet blanket flop' or smth. You need a guide to understand where to even get the upgrade materials, cause surprise, important ones don't come from just slaying the monster (like the freakin gems), you need to specifically get a quest first.

This destroyes any need for exploration, besides your first trip to a new location or first-second hunt of a new monster. Outside of those conditions, you always will travel to a specific place to hunt a specific monster, whose spawn point you already know. There is no need to look or wander around ever again, which is a real shame, cause the locations of this game are gorgeous and deserve more attention than just your first time there.

It also messes with the optional quests system, cause hey, you have optional quests for some benefits, like new cooking canteen ingredients, but you can complete this only in the form of Chosen Quest, which you can get only one, and this lock you out of getting additional loot. So you need to hunt 15 odogarons for your material grind, plus some extra odogarons for a useful sidequest, but without getting those materials.

Hopefully I explained sufficiently enough why this is a goddamn mess, and I am on my way to nexusmods to mod the materials grind away before digging into Iceborne.

- surprise pinecone-bombs attack

- I think the items category should have been reworked too. There are two ways to go about consumables - make their effect minimal, so it only works in combination with others or exists purely for the fun-optimising-gamers who need their 3% attack boost. Or. You make them mandatory.

When you go to hunt and odogaron, you either take the glaive to simply fly over every single hitzone of his attacks, or you take an item to counter the bleeding debuff, cause otherwise you will just die from any of his attacks, cause most of them apply that debuff. When you hunt a venomous monster, you bring antidote, cause otherwise you will die.

This puts MHW firmly in the 'items mandatory category'.

When items are mandatory, you make them accessible. Otherwise, the player will get insane difficulty curve, and each subsequent failure to counter it will punish them even more, so the difficulty curve skyrockets even higher. And it makes the items useless, cause when the player finally conquers the obstacle - they no longer need the item, which was required by design.

In Death Stranding for ex., crafting ladders, vehicles or boots is not costly. Taking them with you is, as your weight capacity is a constant limiter, but it forces you to choose carefully what you bring next with you, especially when you go into new uncharted territories. So, you can pretty much always make the tool you deem useful for the task at hand, you just need to account for it's weight, and limited number of uses, and the weight of the cargo, plus the terrain again, plus the possible enemies. This makes planning interesting and worth it.

MHW kind of falls into every pothole available in this equation. The basic necessity of any combat game - Healing Items, are limited numbered consumables, which you Need To Craft. You Can Run Out Of Healing Potions.

(there is an asterisk here, cause crafting basic or even upgraded healing potion is not too hard and later you get a garden to grow ingredients, so you can not fear for healing items, but this solution ends here and other consumables are most of the time ungrowable).

You can and will run out of items required for specific fights (aka items needed to counter monster specific debuffs), which creates that skyrocketing learning curve.

So yeah, when I first realised exactly how prevalent this issue is, I said To Hell With It and installed unlimited consumables mod. Cause I want to have the counter-items required for some fights on me, without the need to grind for them on different locations.

- Sharpness system kind of has the same problem, but inside the combat loop. Sharpness directly impacts your ability to deal damage, and if it is low, your weapon will just bounce off any armour the monster has. However, To sharpen and be able to deal any damage again, you need an opening, cause the process takes a bit of time. And you can't create an opening to sharpen your weapon, if your weapon is already bouncing off the monster, so it can't deal damage to make said opening.

I learned through trial and error that sometimes you can bait a monster into attack, which you instead use to sharpen, but this does not translate well to every monster, and other ones are designed to obliterate your sharpness (hello Kushala). So those are fun. I did categorise this as a skill issue, rather than design oversight, so I didn't install mods for constant top sharpness.

- It's a disappointment that low and high rank monsters don't have any differences in their behaviour or attacks. Just the damage numbers go up. Understandable, but still disappointing

Anyway, all of this is just a gamedesign analysis fun thing for me to speculate about. Feel free to add or counter anything and everything I wrote here, I am interested in hearing other opinions. Also, obviously I didn't work on this game or at capcom, so I don't know the intent behind their design decisions. Perhaps for them, the points I presented completely nullify the idea behind the systems, and I don't understand shit, their game is perfect. I dunno. That's why I'm interested in discussions.

Just a reminder that I did enjoy the game immensely, and will happily continue playing it, even with all the flaws I pointed out. Would love to get a few hours of life wasted on material grind back tho.

Hey put of pure curiosity. I'm just getting into 40k the actual tabletop but have known the lore for years. The xenos look the coolest and I realize they get the short end of the stick but I would like your opinion anyway. Would you reccomend Eldar or Tyranids? I like the idea of having allies but don't want to play humans so these are what I looking at. I'm thinking either a mixed Eldar, possibly Ynnead force, or a genestealer cult with a swarm of nids. Thoughts?

Ah it's a tough choice, I love both. On my own feelings I can't recommend one over the other, both are great, so instead I'll give some categories you can use yourself for elimination:

In the meta Aeldari are a stronger faction overall so if you're looking for a more competitive army I'd recommend Aeldari.

Painting wise, as someone who's painted Aeldari and Tyranids, I find Tyranids MUCH easier to paint, assemble and get looking good than Aeldari.

On the lore route: I feel Aeldari do have, in the end, honestly the best lore of any faction in the entire game. I feel Aeldari are the most unique, engaging, and interesting thing GW ever actually came up with on it's own, and isn't just purely derivative, which makes how underutilized their lore is a tragedy.

Things I liked/noticed about Amélie the Musical UK

Before the show:

• A friend and I watched Amélie at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury, which is absolutely tiny. (Picture below) It seats about 200 people and is in the middle of no where. It was a hour’s walk from Newbury Station, but he scenery was quite nice. We got two seats in the front and they were cheap (about £26) because there was a pole, but it was so skinny it didnt block anything.

• Because it was in the middle of nowhere, the surrounding area was beautiful and nothing like a traditional theatre. There was a nearby stream and everyone was sitting on on these iron park benches and just enjoying the view.

• The theatre and stage is tiny. So tiny it makes the theatre that I work at which only seats 50 people look like Carnegie Hall.

• The cast : Audrey Brisson as Amélie, Chris Jared as Nino, Johnson Willis as Collignon/Dufayel, Kate Robson Stuart as Suzanne, Sioned Saunders as Gina, Faoileann Cunningham as Georgette/Sylvia, Oliver Grant as Lucien/Mysterious Man, Caolan McCarthy as Hippolito/Elton John, Samuel Morgan-Grahame as Joseph/Fluffy, Josh Sneesby as Blind Beggar/Gnome, Jez Unwim as Raphael/Bretodeau

• Here’s the set:

ACT ONE

• The show starts with the subway light effect and a transit announcement in French.

• I really hope the UK cast records an album and that it includes the “Everybody’s Connected” song because I love it.

• All the actors spoke with a French accent and used French words when saying hello, goodbye, thank you and etc.

• So instead of having a child actor play young Amélie they used a puppet controlled by the guy who plays Lucien while Audrey provides the voice. And holy shit the puppet was terrifying. It had Dora the explorer choppy hair and had this wooden sheen. It also had the ability to blink which added to the creepiness factor.

• Because of the limited space the actors played their own instruments, ocasionally switching off with someone else when they were in the scene.

• The photo booth doubles as a door frame, the background of the sex shop, and a confessional booth in Notre Dame. The large sign that says “Photo Booth” has a light inside that turns on and which makes the inside of the booth visible from the outside and it looked super cool.

• Instead of it being a tourist from Brussels being on top of Notre Dame, they go back to a tourist from Quebec like in the film. The actor stood on top of the photo booth Instead of jumping, the tourist shoots himself and falls on to a crash mat, killing Amadine.

• Amélie describes her mother’s death using the word “squish’

• As they transition scenes, they straight up drag Amadine’s body off stage and it is hilarious.

• The garden gnome is used as an urn for Amadine’s ashes. Like they literally pour her ashes from the urn into the gnome.

• “Times Are Hard For Dreamers” was moved from the first act to the second act and is after “No Place like Gnome”

• I really want “Going Around Circles” to be in the album and I hate that it isn’t cause it’s a bop.

• Hippolito and Joseph smoke while in The Two Windmills, giving it a more Paris vibe

• A bit off topic, but I went to the Two Windmills cafe in France. The food is so good. If you’re a fan of the movie, I definitely reccomend you visit! (Some photos included below.)

• The guy who flirts with Amélie in the cafe leaves his number on a receipt. As she cleans up his table, she stuffs the receipt into her mouth.

• After, Suzanne invites Amélie to go our for drinks with her, Gina, and Georgette, but Amélie refuses.

• The two pianos on stage convert into Georgette’s tobacco counter and the market where Collignon and Lucien work.

• The clock at the top doubles as Amélie’s apartment. The face of the clock slides open into two doors. There aren’t actually any stairs so to get up there, a pulley with a lampshade is dropped down and Audrey just grabs onto it and swings into the apartment. I kept getting nervous every time she went up because the pulley moved so fast, even though it says in her bio that she grew up doing several Cirque du Soleil shows.

• Speaking of Audrey Brisson, SHE IS SO TINY AND I LOVE HER. Like I’m a pretty short person and she was shorter than me.

• Dufayel has the camera to see the outside world like he did in the film.

• One thing they added was at the beginning if each scene they stated the date, time and occasionally the weather, humidity and etc which is a callback to the film. The whole story of Amélie (by which I mean the events that happen within the show) takes course over three months.

• Chris Jared, who played Nino was HOT, in my opinion at least. The headshots were in black and white in the program, so I didn’t know he was older until I saw a few grey hairs, but he was still super hot in a DILF kinda way.

• They make it clear that Collignon hates figs which is why he gets annoyed when Lucien sings “Three Figs”. He’s so disgusted by figs that he vomits in his hat before putting it back on.

• When Amélie starts her quest to do good deeds, she calls Suzanne and asks for a day off. Suzanne agrees and asks slyly, “What’s his name?” Amélie replies with, “Dominique Bredoteau.”

• They included the scene where Amélie goes door to door looking for Bredoteau, another callback to the film.

• Due to the inaccessibility of the second floor besides the lampshade pulley, if a character needed to stand out, they would climb and stand on top of the photo booth. Amélie stood on it in “Tour de France” and Nino stands on it during “When the Booth Goes Bright”

• When Amélie calls Bretodeau, the phone is held by an ensemble member who makes the ringing noise. When he picks it up, the light in the photo booth turns on, revealing Amélie wearing a scarf around her head and a pair of sunglasses as she speaks to him.

• Before “Goodbye Amélie”, as the report of Princess Diana turns into one of her fantasies, Amélie reaches into the TV and puts on a sparkling tiara as Elton John enters.

• She stands on top of the two pianos placed back to back as they serenade her. At the very end of the sing, she lies down across them with her arms crossed and her tiara on her chest as she winks at the audience.

• There’s actually an intermission.

ACT TWO

• It starts with everyone on the subway. Amélie and Nino are on the opposite end of the train car and they sing a lovely duet. I don’t remember the exact lyrics, but there was metaphor of being lost at sea hinting at “Halfway”. I love the song and I need it in a cast album.

• At the end of the song Nino, stands in front of the audience as if exiting a subway car and Amélie sees him, but she immediately sinks into her seat so that he doesn’t see her.

• Nino leaves his photo album on top of the photo booth when he goes to catch his last train. Audrey Brisson is so small that even on her tip toes she couldn’t reach the top of the booth, so she climbed the door frame of the booth to reach the album.

• During intermission, the grocery stall is replaced with a display case full of different sizes and colors of dildos fo the sex shop scene.

• In the scene where Nino laments the loss of his photo album, (“years of his best work” as he calls it) his coworker is polishing a large black dildo with a cloth.

• Audrey plays the piano as she sings “Halfway” and its absolutely beautiful, so much so that I had tears in my eyes and I got a tattoo inspired by the song in Amsterdam.

• What isn’t beautiful is the return of the Young Amélie puppet during “Halfway” who is visible through grown-up Amélie’s clock apartment.

• She calls Nino from her seat on the piano bench while he’s standing behind the piano, which I thought was brilliant staging. It shows how strong their connection was, but despite that, there was still an obstacle preventing them from meeting each other which was Amélie’s reluctance to reach out to him.

• She leaves him with the riddle of solving Xeno’s paradox along with a photo strip of her dressed in a Zorro costume, which is another callback to the film.

• They also narrate Amélie forging a letter from Gina’s late husband. She does so by taking some of the letters he wrote her before Amélie returning the box of letters to Gina.

• Collignon comes into the cafe, complaining about Lucien. Seeing a chance to get back at him, Amélie serves him a fig tart. As Collignon becomes sick, three people wearing nightmare fig costumes bust out of the photo booth and haunt him. The lights around him and the cafe go dark and turn nightmarish meanwhile Amélie is brightly lit in the downstage left corner by the cigarette counter, as she leisurely unwraps a mint and pops it into her mouth. Collignon is shaken out of his fig nightmare when Lucien enters the café to grab his attention. Collignon admits as a young man he wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer, but his mother wanted him to be a grocer and so he became one despite having no love for it. The reason he is so mean to Lucien is because he sees how much care and love Lucien takes when handling the produce that it makes him bitter. He apologizes to Lucien. Lucien replies he has no idea what he’s talking about and offers to close up the shop for Collignon, who agrees and says that Lucien is a good boy. I love this addition as it doesn’t sweep Lucien and Collignon’s plotline under the rug like the Broadway production does. It’s addressed and resolved before the end of the show.

• After the fig-induced nightmare sequence, Raphael rushes in to the cafe in distress. Instead of going into “No Place Like Gnome” they pause the scene in the cafe.

• They narrate that 275 km away Nino posts flyers of Amelié in the Zorro costume around the city and they move into “Thin Air” instead. Nino comes in from the side of the clock and stands on top of the photo booth. Again because of the limited space, the posters are just stuck around the metal framing of the clock.

• They return back to the café after “Thin Air”. After “No Place Like Gnome” as Amélie spray paints Hippolito’s quote below the clock, she notices the posters and panics ripping one off, but leaves the rest hanging. A took a picture of the set at the end of the show.

• Amelié sends another photo strip to Nino writing, “It has come to my attention that you are looking for me. This Friday. 5pm. Montmartre Carousel. Bring five francs.”

• Amelié wears the Zorro costume in “Blue Arrow Suite”. The ensemble acted as the carousel and had blue arrows on the back of their instruments or on them. For those playing smaller instruments, they wore blue gloves and pointed towards the next “arrow”. The top of the hill was the photo booth and Nino pulls a red stand of binoculars out of fucking nowhere.

• Joseph says Georgette looks lovely when she’s flushed. She replies she’s flushed because of her gluten intolerance.

• When Nino and Amelié are set to meet at the cafe, the airline hostess is one of the customers there and joins in signing “A Better Haircut”

• They cut out the line where Nino says he loves Amelié and doesnt even know her name in “A Better Haircut” and I’m honestly so glad they did that. It works so much better Instead it just goes, “But you know I think she understands me/ I don’t know why she would understand/She may not even feel the same/But I don’t even know her name” with the “She may not even feel the same” part being dragged out a bit more.

• Georgette gets Hippolito to write down Amelié’s address on a page in his notebook that he tips out and gives to him.

• As Amelié sits in her clock apartment, the photo booth is turned so the side that is the door faces the audience. Nino waits below in front of it as they sing “Stay”. As they sing, Amélie moves from her apartment to the top of the photo booth. Again I love the staging, the use of different levels shows both the emotional and physical distance separating them.

• At the end of “Stay”, Nino realizes she won’t be opening the door. He looks like he gets an idea and walks away as the booth is turned to show the photo booth side. Amelié collapses in on herself and cries. From his window, Dufayel tells Amelié there is nothing to fear and shows her his new painting: it’s Amelié drinking a glass of water, making her the girl with the glass.

• Instead of opening the door, Nino climbs through a “window” aka on top of the photo booth (at least that was my interpretation of it, it wasn’t very clear how he got in)

• They sing the “Halfway (Reprise)” and do the the famous kiss on the cheek, neck and eye. Honestly, the tension between them was insane and had whole audience dying with anticipation as we collectively held our breaths. Audrey Brisson and Chris Jared have such crazy good chemistry. When they finally kissed it was like a sigh of relief washed over the audience.

• As the ensemble kneel before Amelié and Nino, Raphael stands, stating that he finally goes on a trip with Suzanne by his side, who then stands up beside him and smiles at him.

• In “Where Do We Go From Here?” one of Nino’s line is changed instead of singing, “Will there be sweet things?” It goes “Will you be with me?” and Amélie’s reply sticks to the original lyric as she answers with, “I hope so.”

• After bows, the cast sing a finale song that combines “When the Booth Goes Bright” and “Times Are Hard for Dreamers”. I cannot stress enough how badly I want a cast album of this show.

In Summary

• The show has improved so much and fixes a lot of the issues the Broadway version had.

• Overall, the UK production stays more faithful to the movie, including lots of callbacks and scenes from the film itself as well as the overall atmosphere of the Paris.

Completed the main story of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and wow I love this game more than the first one.

While the world doesn’t feel as epic as Chronicles world of two massive titans where everyone lives upon, the smaller titans of Chronicles 2 are stil gorgeous landscapes and the environments are wonderful to explore.

The Gameplay of the battle system is a bit different from the first game, so even veteran players will still find a steep learning curve, but once you get the basics it comes naturally.

The story and characters are wonderful and I think done way better than the first game. The overall tone of the first game was more grounded and serious, while Chronicles 2 takes a more anime like tone with plenty of humor in places and heart breaking moments too. The new artstyle I find is more expressive when it comes to faces and I just find it more appealing. And no I don’t have an issue with the female designs, I actually find them quite cool looking, the same with the male designs, and I want to stay away from the drama in the fanbase.

Like most JRPGs the cutscenes can get pretty long, they are at least entertaining and flesh out each character, no one feels left out and forgotten once their introduction story is resolved. I thought the voice acting was pretty decent, apart from Rex’s long yells and one villain’s actor seems to have only two settings, cool and calm one moment and shouting at the top of his lungs the next, but I love Nia’s Welsh accent being Welsh myself and she is definately one of my top faves in the game, her and Poppi the artificial blade (robot girl basically) who is simply adorable in her own robotic way but still has some great cutting remarks regarding her Nopon creator Tora, and what happens in the ending with her had me in tears. I’ll go into more details why I like them once my fanart of the two is done.

Overall if you loved the other Xenoblade games (or any Xeno game), this is a must play. If you enjoy JRPGs with a fun story, play this game. I highly reccomend this for anyone who doesn’t mind a long game for their Switch.
