When I’ve been tagged on this before, I’ve gotten very philosophical about what constitutes a comfort character. I’m not going to do that again, but I will simply say that for the purposes of this tag game, I consider a comfort character someone who’s always nice to come home to and sit with quietly, as it were.

4. Caul Shivers (The First Law—Yes, I know there is very little obviously comforting about Shivers or his arc in this world, but thinking about him makes me feel better, and I think that counts as comfort.)

For the character ask, Jappo 🥺🥺

What I love about them: The fact he's only been in one chapter and already feels like a First Law staple well-deserving of a place on top 10 character lists. Joe did an amazing job of making the child of Monza and Shivers live up to his parent's level of awesome, which is no small feat. I love that we got to see multiple sides of him, and that while he definitely has the upper hand with Leo, he's on the back foot with Orso. Considering his respect for his mother and his open-mindedness, I think he's similar to Orso in many ways, but less uptight, I think in part because he has a more competant/supportive group of people behind him - granted, we haven't seen much of Styrian politics, but there are worse people to have at your back than Monza, Shenkt, and Vitari. He's also just a total riot in dialogue and deed. Say one thing for Jappo mon Rogont Murcatto, say the man has style.

What I hate about them: So far, nothing, but I'd be surprised if he's quite as rosy as FT,PA makes out.

Favorite Moment/Quote: "If it helps, I don't only fuck men. Sometimes I'm fucked by them."

What I would like to see more focus on: His family! I really want to know what his actual relationship with Monza is like and how it compares to the other parental relationships in the series. She can't be an easy person to live with, however much he respects her. And a Shivers/Jappo reunion would bring me so much joy (unless it doesn't ;w;). I really need a full Jappo POV in a standalone novel.

What I would like to see less focus on: N/A for a man we've only known for one damn chapter.

Favorite pairing with: Orso or Jurand.

Favorite friendship: Orso. I love how Orso immediately sets himself up as a sort of older brother who's already been there, done that, got the rebels beating down the door. Orso, Jappo, and Rikke could form such a powerful alliance were it not for all the extenuating circumstances that mean there's no way in hell they can do that.

NOTP: Jappo/homophobia. He must've felt super drained after his conversation with Leo. Y'know, like there he is in Cardotti's, where gay people are a norm, and then this jumped up brat has the audacity to be that homophobic to his face? It can't be a fun time, regardless of how gracefully he dealt with it. I'm very glad he met Leo before Orso, and that it wasn't the other way around.

Favorite headcanon: Jappo took Jurand and Glaward under his wing after realising Leo kicked them out, and they're all currently living it up in pure, hedonistic bliss.

Top 5 books To Read This Year (in no particular order)

1. Jade City by Fonda Lee - Multiple booktubers who's taste usually to align with mine have talked this book up and it just seems like it has a very cool vibe, from what the blurb says I have a feeling I'm gonna enjoy it

2. The Colour Of Magic by Terry Pratchett - To my shame I have yet to dive into Discworld, so this year that should change I reckon, at the very least I'm gonna read this since it's the first one and I've heard nothing but good things about it

3. The Once & Future King by T.H. White - I do like me a bit of Arthurian Legend (i.e. BBC Merlin lmao) and this is largely considered to be The definitive Arthurian novel. Plus I like to read at least one Classic Fiction a year and this is one I've wanted to read for absolutely ages

4. Ship Of Magic by Robin Hobb - The Farseer Trilogy was one of my favourite reads of last year, so naturally I can't wait to dive into the Liveship Traders Trilogy and get to experience more of the world of ROTE

5. Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor - A time travel comedy adventure? Sign me up. I literally just stumbled upon this in a 2nd hand bookstore today and had a gander at it and it seems like it's going to be a very fun read, so looking forward to this one

Snuffy: The only one who knows what really happened in the past. He says he respects Noa and Ego’s ~choices~ no matter what, but inwardly is super anxious because he sees Noaego as a surrogate for him and his deceased friend (OH NO).

President of JFU, Chapter 207 (to Ego): "You haven’t forgotten about the 'story' you promised me when we approved your proposal, right, Ego-chan? After all, football is business!"

Ego, Ch. 205 (to Yukimiya): "I’m not that kind of vulgar trash who would stoop so low to release people’s private information for public consumption."

Noa's interview line from Isagi's prelude light novel: "(I'd rather score a hat trick and lose 3-4 than assist my teammate and win 1-0…) Such emotions are not for sale anywhere. (そんな感情どこにも売ってないだろ)."

I once didn’t think the “promised story” refers to Ego’s backstory with Noa, because tbh nobody cares about a failed player at the football's backwater. I thought it referred to grooming up a manmade super idol like Nagi or Isagi. But after noticing Ego’s line in Ch. 205, I’m not sure anymore.

Plus, my fandom brain just can’t let go of the opportunity to explore Ego's tendency of self-deprecation. Striking a deal with the bureaucracy you hate? “I would vanish, but you have changed Japanese football”? Did I just smell self-sacrifice? Delicious, how delicious, Ego-chan…
