She knew he still had nightmares about it. They all did.

She watched him pace the floor nervously. "[Name]." Her voice was firmer this time,

"That really hurt," she admitted.

"I know. I'm sorry."

                                                             ---

Years later, he still retreats to that secret space in the back of his mind, where the memory of the girl with pink eyes lived on.

                                                             ---

Things are quieter than they've been in a long time and she takes a moment to revel in the silence.

                                                             ---

"I can't help you with this. It has to be you. I know you can save him. You saved me."

                                                             ---

She can't tell where her nightmares end or his begin.

                                                             ---

The truth is, I knew you weren't mine. There was no way you could be."

"Then why did you help me?"

                                                             ---

And finally the day came when she didn't bother to get out of bed at all.

                                                             ---

"Then that means... everything that I thought I was..." There was a touch of hysteria in her voice. "You knew the whole time?"

She's been on a mission to help her MIA/endangered father, only to realize at the end the person she's been traveling with is her real father (he found her and orchestrated a way to tag along/be part of her life/just to get to meet her before...?)

"No. You're the only family I need."

                                                             ---

The moment the thought crosses her mind, she wishes she could unthink it.

                                                             ---

Aftermath - the battle is over, Yukine has been released and can't serve Yato anymore, Hiyori almost died in the attempt to save them.

"Not here," Yato warns gently.

Yukine's gaze falls. They leave silently and walk for a long time.

                                                             ---

He knows she isn't really there. She hasn't been in a long time.

                                                             ---

"You're making it awfully difficult to concentrate," she chided, but he could hear the smile she was fighting back.

"You're working too hard," he replied, and she sucked in a breath when his hands came to rest on her shoulders, fingers digging softly into the stiff muscles. "See? Look how tense you are. You should take a break."

Spicy Ones:

"You jumping my bones every night isn't exactly helping," she deadpanned.

"I don't recall any complaining last night," [Name] retorted. He grinned against her shoulder and she cursed her body for arching to allow him better access when he began trailing gentle kisses along the side of her neck. "And the night before that was all you. And the night before that."

She had a witty comeback prepared when she opened her mouth again, but all that came out was a breathy whimper when his tongue flitted across the sensitive skin behind her earlobe.

"You wouldn't be saying that if you knew what was going on in my head right now."

There was something edgy and oddly enticing in his voice and she narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Enlighten me," she challenged.

He quirked an eyebrow, contemplating. The answer might not be worth one of her panic martial art responses, but then again... it might be. "Are you sure you want to know?"

She huffed indignantly, then became grew acutely aware of the shift in the atmosphere as he took a few steps closer, leaning in to whisper seductively in her ear. "It has to do with you, the desk behind you, and significantly fewer layers."

Child Abuse & Murder

One of the reasons why the fans of the series consider Noragami as one of the finest work existed in the manga industry is because of how the authors included important social issues into their world of fiction that is Noragami. The concept of God and Regalia is more than just a master with their tool eradicating evil but the relationship between them is a lot deeper and significant not only to the story but also its connection to the real world. When a wandering spirit is named, or recruited, by a God, not only are their lives connected but so do their emotions and memories. However, it only goes one way: from the Regalia to their God, so only the God can witness their Regalia's mortal memories and also feel their emotions while the named spirits can't do the same with their God nor can they even remember their own past as learning about them could lead to their demise.

Keeping that in mind, out of all Regalia in the series, one particular character's past intrigues me and probably strikes the most heart-breaking and cruel. Yukine is Yato's Regalia who he named at the beginning of the story. Yukine is a spirit who died at the age of 14 years old due to domestic abuse and murder by his abusive alcoholic father. After his mother and sister left him with his father, he was forbidden to keep in contact with them but he still tried to send as many letters as he could to his sister until one day, he was caught by his father. Yukine's father beat him senselessly afterwards but instead of sending him to the hospital, he went into the mountains and abandoned his severely injured and bruised body in a forsaken refrigerator.

For the rest of his human life after his mother and sister left, not only did Yukine suffered from physical abuse but also malnutrition and stress which explains why he has such a delicately smaller frame than an average 14 years old. Because that Yukine was still conscious when he was trapped in the dark and suffocating space, he developed severe trauma and fear of the dark which were unconsciously brought along with him after he died into the far shore. Even though Regalia don’t remember anything from their past but memories could still be triggered whenever they encounter a familiar situation. Like Yukine, his body remembered the extreme fear of the dark he felt when he was in the refrigerator and the loathing towards his father.  

By portraying Yukine as a victim of child abuse, AdachiToka utilized this character to spread awareness of this issue and highlight the importance of helping those who are in need but are too afraid to reach out to people for help. As of 2020 in Japan, National Police Agency reported 106,991 children became victims to child abuse and the cases kept increasing every month. Additionally, negligence and ignorance are also to blame for this recurring problem, as Yukine’s mother wasn’t even bothered to help her children and kept a smiling façade throughout her children’s abuse, possibly to avoid getting assaulted herself. Their neighbors who were knew about the father’s abusive behavior and the poor treatment against his son tried to avoid helping him as to not get involved with the family’s problem. 

Upon learning about his past and death, Yukine stumbled upon statistics and articles concerning child abuses but nothing about his case. This suggests that his body was never found nor reported to the public and authorities for 40 years ever since he was 14 years old until his God, Yato, named him and found his body to do a proper burial for him. This goes to show how the numbers we see on the media doesn’t exactly measure the amount of cases happening worldwide as there are people whose voices still haven’t been heard or noticed. Some unfortunate souls may even have gone through the same abuse as Yukine somewhere in the world.

Alright these are my thoughts on @dreammirmir post on the Yato situation.

°The aging up characters stuff.

You may disagree with me which is fine but I don't see it as a problem. They are 2d fictional characters with no self awareness what so ever. I am able to separate fiction from reality as I am not attracted to teenagers who are actual human beings who can be hurt and taken advantage of.

On this stance I've held it for a long time.

Not to mention My Hero Academia is a Flash Back from Izuku's perspective as they are all adults now, as well as for Haikyuu characters where they actually get to be in their 20s and in college in canon. Cece in her audios never mentions Highschool and always mentions how they are Pro Heros (for my hero) and in College (for Haikyuu) and I know this because I have been a listener since almost the beginning.

I find it silly that people harp on stuff like this with Cece, when fanfiction is a thing. On this I will not change.

I myself am almost reaching 30 and I am still in love with characters from my teens. Does that make me wrong? Does that make me disgusting? I don't think so. I will continue to age and they will stay forever the same which is why I feel the way I do about this. It doesn't matter because they're 2d. A piece of media and nothing more.

°On Cece disapearing.

Try to put yourself in her shoes for a moment. You're a tiny youtuber in a niche market for a year and then suddenly BOOM you explode in popularity over the course of 2020! Your Patreon is taking off, people are looking up to you, your in charge of a whole community, the moneys coming in, things are nuts! On top of that you have people taking advantage of you, fucking up the discord, making drama here and there and people who come over just to hate on you for what you do and all of this happens in one year. I would want to dissappear for a bit to and get my thoughts together. Not to mention her own mental health, her own depression. Thats a lot for one person to take on. Just because she's an adult doesn't mean she's immune to hate.

°Now the a.k.a. grooming and victim

Those discord chats don't look like grooming. They look like two people, that if you didn't know they're ages, would just be shooting the shit.

Now I might be wrong to some people but I am also of the mind that if the person thinks something is shady they should have known better. I'm not victim blaming, I'm just saying it's common sense. And sure every teen is different but I would like to give the benefit of the doubt that they are smarter than I was at their age.

To me these allegations look like a twisting of the narrative presented.

Again just my thoughts.

°And lastly her content

As long as I've been listening Cece's gone out of her way to educate herself when something she does or says on her audios triggers her listeners. She's never malicious with her content and goes out of her way to post trigger warnings in her descriptions. Now if people ignore those it's on them. They can't order a jalapeno pizza and then complain that it's too spicy.

On top of that she made the patreon to keep her spiciest audios behind a pay wall as well as age restrict her content against minors. She can't police the entire community and putting that sort of responsibility on one person is ridiculous.

If under age people are getting to her things it's on them not Cece.

Yes they should be careful on what they watch and listen too because they be too young but you can't hold that over someone like it's they're fault when they've done what they can.

Is it South Parks fault that I watched them at 12? Nope. Maybe my parents but certainly not South Park on their end.

°Random thought

I personally didn't find anything wrong with the Fatgum audio and I'm not saying this because I'm biased. If it made you personally uncomfortable than I'm sorry it did.

I don't know how old you are but we don't know anything at 20 let alone 30. People can make mistakes and she apologized for them. Her changing her name and discreetly apologizing to the "victim" is her business and as much as we want to know about it thats not up to us. They're allowed privacy on both ends and anyone trying to dox either of them is an asshole.

I may have missed a couple of things here and there but over all these are my thoughts on everything I have the brainpower to think of right now. Call me naive, call me blind but I believe in Cece. I'm not trying to change anyones mind because sometimes people's minds are made up and that's fine. I just want people to see the different perspectives is all.

Happy 46th birthday Kamiya Hiroshi-san! | 28.01.2021

Alright I’m back to posting birthday celebration/top seiyuu roles stuffs (or at least for Kamiyan’s birthday). My last Kamiyan birthday post was in 2019, so let’s revamp my list now.

#1: Takashi Natsume - Natsume Yuujinchou

Soft Kamiyan is best Kamiyan. I’m sorry, but I guess I just love soft characters. I think I’ve gushed more than enough how much I love Natsume Yuujinchou, Natsume Takashi, and of course his small buta neko companion/self-proclaimed guardian. So here it is, Soft Kamiyan’s best cinnamon roll boi Natsume as my #1 favorite Kamiyan role (heck, my #1 favorite character, series, and performance ever). My heart expands three thousand times every time I hear Natsume speak.

#2: Kakushi Gotou - Kakushigoto

I’ll be honest. This is the reason why I’m coming back to making these posts lol. I just finished watching Kakushigoto and I am in love with it!!! Definitely one of the hidden gems of 2020. A story about a single father who’s trying to raise his daughter while hiding the nature of his job. And Kamiyan nailed Gotou. From his dramatic performance when he’s on the job to the soft and caring side when he’s with his daughter. Everything was just perfect. Hearing Gotou just feels so natural. 

#3: Izaya Orihara - Durarara!!

The heartless little bastard that was probably the first Kamiyan role that stole my heart. Again, Kamiyan gave Izaya life. Still one of my favorite Kamiyan roles to this day. It makes one wonder how this is the same man who voices soft Natsume. Speaking of, I remember thinking ‘I know this voice!’ when Kamiyan used his Natsume voice as Nakura in episode 2 I think

#4: Yato - Noragami

Season 3 when lol but well in all seriousness, Kamiyan as Yato is just amazing. He showed a wider range of emotion in Aragoto after we learn about his past as the God of Calamity, his desire to be the God of Fortune, and finally seeing him with Father for the first time. Just imagine how animated and voiced Yato will kill me if they ever decide to make a season 3 T-T

#5: Koyomi Araragi - Monogatari series

It’s a talent in and of itself to be able to voice a wide range of characters and make each and every one of them memorable. Though he’s that type of seiyuu whose voice is very recognizable, I never get bored. Koyomi is one such case, and I just love him so much. (Speaking of Monogatari, I have yet to see Arakawa Under The Bridge and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. Huh, so Kamiyan worked with Akiyuki Shinbou in three series, whereas he worked with Omori Takahiro in two - NatsuYuu and Durarara, one of which is still ongoing)

Well, seems like my top 5 still hasn’t changed (except for one) xD But really though, four of the five are indisputable, they probably won’t be dropping out of the list any time soon. It is funny how many of my favorite main characters were voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi. Whereas I usually associate a seiyuu with their popular characters, I never do so with Kamiyan. Somehow, he feels low-profile yet he manages to score big roles that end up being famous and/or iconic. His characters always feel so natural to me.  

Honorable Mentions

HM1: Kusuo Saiki - Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan

Don’t you just love when Kamiyan voices characters who talk a lot? I know I do, lol. There was Araragi, and then Saiki. I remember him talking in the DGS radio about when he got the role. He wasn’t actually too keen on it xD but hey I love him as Saiki lol

HM2: Levi Ackerman - Shingeki no Kyojin

To be honest, I’m not much of a fan of Kamiyan’s Levi. I love Levi, not a fan of his voice lol. But I still gotta put him on this list. Because, well, one of his most popular roles to date? Yeah, lol. I said how Kamiyan’s voice is usually recognizable. That’s not quite the case with Levi. I still can’t find any trace of his voice whenever I hear Levi speak that you’d wonder how is it possible that the man behind Levi is also the one behind characters like Natsume, Yato, Izaya lol. Sometimes it feels like he had to force his voice to go that deep. 

HM3: Choromatsu - Osomatsu-san

Yeah I don’t follow Osomatsu-san, even though I want to. All my favorite A-list casts, but the comedy is just not my cup of tea ^^;; Still, I do love seeing some episodes, and the series is quite the phenomenon, so I’m gonna put him on the list. 

HM4: Tieria Erde - Mobile Suits Gundam 00

Seriously, there are a lot of other characters I want to put here. Like Ao no Exorcist’s Mephisto Pheles (Kamiyan was awesome here) or BSD’s Edogawa Ranpo (minor, but eh, still a popular series), but neither (not the characters or the series) are a favorite, so I’m going with Tieria Erde from Gundam 00. I’m not a Gundam fan. Not in the sense that I watched all series. But I do love mecha and even though Gundam 00 is more of a spin-off from the bigger Gundam narrative, I loved it. Great casts, enjoyable story. I guess this was before Kamiyan grew famous? Still, I did love Tieria, especially in the second season. That deadpan character who occasionally show emotion. 

HM5: Machina Kunagiri - Final Fantasy Type-0

I never played the game, tbh, but I wanted to mention him in the list because, well, Final Fantasy (and I’ve always been fascinated with Type-0′s lore). I wish Square would cast him in a mainline game. Well, he was casted as a minor role in FFX, but seeing Square’s trend of casting A-list seiyuu’s as their main characters, one could dream, right? To be fair, 7R mainly used their original cast from back in the 2000s and the main XV cast was decided also in mid 2000 (back from when it was still Versus XIII, though they changed Gladiolus’s seiyuu). I do wish they’d cast Kamiyan as, even if not a main character, a major supporting character. He’s not even in XIV when XIV has a lot of famous seiyuus in it. 

well, that’s my list for now. I realize that many of my favorite Kamiyan roles are from recurring series. When I first made the list two years ago, I was surprised by how few roles I can list, because apparently all my favorites are from long ongoing series or ones that spawn many seasons. Look at NatsuYuu, Osomatsu, Monogatari, and SnK lol. No wonder it always feels like I hear Kamiyan every season xD

Demon Slayer (2019)

A family is attacked by demons and only two members survive - Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, who is turning into a demon slowly. Tanjiro sets out to become a demon slayer to avenge his family and cure his sister.

Death Parade (2015)

After death, there is no heaven or hell, only a bar that stands between reincarnation and oblivion. There the attendant will, one after another, challenge pairs of the recently deceased to a random game in which their fate of either ascending into reincarnation or falling into the void will be wagered. Whether it's bowling, darts, air hockey, or anything in between, each person's true nature will be revealed in a ghastly parade of death and memories, dancing to the whims of the bar's master. Welcome to Quindecim, where Decim, arbiter of the afterlife, awaits! Death Parade expands upon the original one-shot intended to train young animators. It follows yet more people receiving judgment—until a strange, black-haired guest causes Decim to begin questioning his own rulings.

Noragami (2014)

In times of need, if you look in the right place, you just may see a strange telephone number scrawled in red. If you call this number, you will hear a young man introduce himself as the God Yato. Yato is a minor deity and a self-proclaimed "Delivery God," who dreams of having millions of worshippers. Without a single shrine dedicated to his name, however, his goals are far from being realized. He spends his days doing odd jobs for five yen apiece, until his weapon partner becomes fed up with her useless master and deserts him. Just as things seem to be looking grim for the god, his fortune changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, supposedly saves Yato from a car accident, taking the hit for him. Remarkably, she survives, but the event has caused her soul to become loose and hence able to leave her body. Hiyori demands that Yato return her to normal, but upon learning that he needs a new partner to do so, reluctantly agrees to help him find one. And with Hiyori's help, Yato's luck may finally be turning around.

Yona of the Dawn (2014-2015)

Princess Yona lives a life of luxury and ease, completely sheltered from the problems of the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Kouka; however, the sudden murder of the king and betrayal of her beloved cousin Su-won places Yona's life in mortal peril. Forced to escape only with Son Hak, who is both her childhood friend and bodyguard, the naïve princess soon discovers that Kouka is not the idyllic place she envisioned it to be. Poverty, strife, and corruption run rampant, making reclaiming the throne nothing more than a wishful fantasy given the kingdom's current state. With only a mysterious legend to guide her, Yona must discover a way to restore Kouka to its former glory while being pursued relentlessly by the forces of the new King of Kouka.

My Rating: 8/10

Haikyu! (2014-Present)

Inspired after watching a volleyball ace nicknamed "Little Giant" in action, small-statured Shouyou Hinata revives the volleyball club at his middle school. The newly-formed team even makes it to a tournament; however, their first match turns out to be their last when they are brutally squashed by the "King of the Court," Tobio Kageyama. Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama, and so after graduating from middle school, he joins Karasuno High School's volleyball team—only to find that his sworn rival, Kageyama, is now his teammate. Thanks to his short height, Hinata struggles to find his role on the team, even with his superior jumping power. Surprisingly, Kageyama has his own problems that only Hinata can help with, and learning to work together appears to be the only way for the team to be successful.

The Devil is a Part-Timer (2013)

Striking fear into the hearts of mortals, the Demon Lord Satan begins to conquer the land of Ente Isla with his vast demon armies. However, while embarking on this brutal quest to take over the continent, his efforts are foiled by the hero Emilia, forcing Satan to make his swift retreat through a dimensional portal only to land in the human world. Along with his loyal general Alsiel, the demon finds himself stranded in modern-day Tokyo and vows to return and complete his subjugation of Ente Isla—that is, if they can find a way back! Powerless in a world without magic, Satan assumes the guise of a human named Sadao Maou and begins working at MgRonald's—a local fast-food restaurant—to make ends meet. He soon realizes that his goal of conquering Ente Isla is just not enough as he grows determined to climb the corporate ladder and become the ruler of Earth, one satisfied customer at a time!

The Promised Neverland (2019-Present)

Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their "Mama," Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage—a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family... never to be heard from again. However, the three oldest siblings have their suspicions about what is actually happening at the orphanage, and they are about to discover the cruel fate that awaits the children living at Grace Field, including the twisted nature of their beloved Mama.

Toradora (2008-2009)

Ryuuji Takasu is a gentle high school student with a love for housework; but in contrast to his kind nature, he has an intimidating face that often gets him labeled as a delinquent. On the other hand is Taiga Aisaka, a small, doll-like student, who is anything but a cute and fragile girl. Equipped with a wooden katana and feisty personality, Taiga is known throughout the school as the "Palmtop Tiger." One day, an embarrassing mistake causes the two students to cross paths. Ryuuji discovers that Taiga actually has a sweet side: she has a crush on the popular vice president, Yuusaku Kitamura, who happens to be his best friend. But things only get crazier when Ryuuji reveals that he has a crush on Minori Kushieda—Taiga's best friend! Toradora! is a romantic comedy that follows this odd duo as they embark on a quest to help each other with their respective crushes, forming an unlikely alliance in the process.

Hypnosis Microphone: Division Rap Battle - Rhyme Anima (2020)

In a world overtaken by war and conflict, "Hypnosis Microphones"—devices through which a user channels lyrics that can affect the listener's brain and even cause physical damage—were introduced to the masses by the Party of Words. Revolutionizing warfare, Hypnosis Mics have transformed words and music into the sole weapons used by gangsters, terrorists, and the military, with physical weapons having been banned from use. As a result of swooping in during the chaos, the all-female Party of Words rules over the Japanese government. Women in Japan now live in Chuuouku, while men battle over surrounding territories outside the ward through rap battles. With intentions unknown, the Party of Words begins to gather the former members of the now-disbanded legendary rap crew The Dirty Dawg to fight not for territory or war, but for their respective crew's pride and honor in the greatest rap battle of all time. The first Division Rap Battle is about to commence, and practice isn't something these rappers are going to need.

Kamisama Kiss (2012)

High schooler Nanami Momozono has quite a few problems of late, beginning with her absentee father being in such extreme debt that they lose everything. Downtrodden and homeless, she runs into a man being harassed by a dog. After helping him, she explains her situation, and to her surprise, he offers her his home in gratitude. But when she discovers that said home is a rundown shrine, she tries to leave; however, she is caught by two shrine spirits and a fox familiar named Tomoe. They mistake her for the man Nanami rescued—the land god of the shrine, Mikage. Realizing that Mikage must have sent her there as a replacement god, Tomoe leaves abruptly, refusing to serve a human. Rather than going back to being homeless, Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him. Now the two must traverse the path of godhood together as god and familiar; but it will not be easy, for new threats arise in the form of a youkai who wants to devour the girl, a snake that wants to marry her, and Nanami's own unexpected feelings for her new familiar.

My Roommate is a Cat (2019)

Subaru Mikazuki is a 23-year-old mystery novel author, major introvert, and an awkwardly shy person. He would much rather stay home to read a book than go outside and interact with others. Further exacerbating this life of solitude, his parents tragically died in an accident many years ago, leaving him alone in the world. One day, while giving offerings at his parents' grave, Subaru runs into a small black and white cat named Haru, which he ends up taking home with him. Subaru, however, has never taken care of anyone else in his life—can he even take care of a cat? Haru is grateful toward Subaru, as he gives her all the food she wants—a luxury for a cat who is used to a rough life on the streets. But she notices that Subaru can't even seem to take care of himself! Will she be okay with this dunce?

Goryoujin: what’s the deal with Father? (89-2 edition) - Part 1

As always, Father backstory is living in my mind rent free so in this post, I’ll be talking about goryou(jin), onryo, asserting some facts, asking some questions, talking a lot, but most importantly, I’ll be begging Adachitoka to get the foreplay over with already and give. us. a. The Facts: What We Know (And What We Don’t)

A little bit wordy but I just wanted to sum up all the relevant information we have so far.

Father was, without a shadow of a doubt, human. 

According to Ebisu’s mask data, he lived 1100~ years ago. This would put the beginning of the timeline at around 900~ CE, which is right smack in the middle of the Heian period (794 - 1185). 

The Sakura flashbacks take place in and around the old capital of Heian (modern day Kyoto). The manga explicitly mentions the outer street of Kujo (Chapter 46 - official translation, page 14). The exact year is unknown but it’s likely to be after 947 (the year when the construction of Kitano Tenmangu, the shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane we see in the flashbacks, was completed) but before 986 (when Sugawara no Michizane is officially deified as “Tenjin”).

He was very likely a Buddhist priest, judging by the simple motsuke koromo over a white kosode he wears in the flashbacks (the attire of your run-of-the-mill priest in the Heian period); the lingo + imagery associated with him (karma, Liberation, Chiki’s shakujou form) are strongly tied to Buddhist concepts.

He entered Yomi (in what way - by dying or by physically entering - is unclear), was given the first Koto-no-Ha by Izanami, then escaped via an unspecified “loophole” which allowed his soul to be called from Yomi by an unknown person. Real name used in the soul call is unknown. 

Izanami - who takes the appearance of the person closest to the viewer - appeared to him as a woman with a pockmarked face, which he lost to an unspecified natural disaster caused by a god(s). This is implied to have fueled his grudge against the Heavens: “Your ilk gets off scot-free for everything you do. But who do you think forgives the debt? People do. No matter how much you take from them, how much you walk all over them. I can’t forgive any of you. Not the gods… or any of the idiots who forgive them.”

After his death, it seems he became something akin to a goryoujin/onryo - either way, in his current state he’s neither god nor human but a “nonexistent creature abandoned by Heaven” whose escape from Yomi trapped him in an eternal cycle of reincarnation into other peoples’ bodies, which he doesn’t get to choose. 

He killed gods before realizing that it’s all pointless unless those who put their faith in the gods all died as well.

Although his exact motive for learning how to tame ayakashi is unclear, he states the following when Bishamon faces off with Heaven wielding Nana: “You have something you want to protect, even if it means being forsaken by the Heavens. You’ll do whatever it takes, even if it means following the path of disgrace and dishonor. You’re so predictable, Bishamon. You’re starting to remind me of me.” (Chapter 64 - official translation, page 25)

He named Mizuchi with the Koto-no-Ha.

As far as we know, Yato was born from Father’s one powerful wish, “the only wish [he] has ever been able to wish in [his] entire life”: to cull the herd. He gives him the name “Yaboku” - meaning “night diviner” - when he catches a star falling from Kanoto to Tori. This strongly suggests Father’s knowledge of the Chinese astrology system, as hinted at by the 28 Lunar Mansions illustrated on the cover of Volume 12 (Chinese astrology lore such as the 7 Big Dipper Stars, 9 Luminaries, 28 Lunar Mansions, and 36 Animals were all imported to Japan in the 6th century and later integrated into the esoteric Shingon and Tendai branches of Japanese Buddhism in the mid to late Heian period).

What is a “goryoujin”? (Infodump Part 2)

If you try to google “goryoujin”, “goryojin”, or any variation of this particular word in English, you won’t get any results (that are relevant, anyway). The word “goryoujin” seems to actually be a regional variant of the word goryō 御霊, literally meaning “honorable ghost” with the kanji for “god” 神 tacked on at the end. For the sake of cohesion, I’ll be using goryō from this point forth when talking about mythical goryō outside the context of Noragami.

Emerging in the early Heian period, the word goryō referred to the spirits of aristocrats who had died due to political causes (much like Tenjin, who is himself considered a goryō) and turned into wrathful spirits who carried out their vengeance against the public, causing things like epidemics, wars, and natural disasters. The ancient nobility would then honor these spirits as goryō (thus the name “honorable spirit”) to placate their wrath and turn them into benevolent guardians to bring peace to society (though some sources claim that not all goryō were vengeful spirits); this practice became known as goryō shinko 御霊信仰.

However, over time, the word goryō expanded its horizons - instead of just nobles being venerated due to fears about their wrath, any wrathful ghosts powerful enough could be honored as a goryō by people who feared that they might come back to take vengeance. This much-feared type of yokai 妖怪 is called an onryo 怨霊 (lit. “wrathful ghost”, “grudge ghost”) and any person who died an untimely, particularly grisly, or unnatural death or carried a powerful emotion to the grave (anger, hatred, grief, even intense love turned into jealousy) could become an onryo. Those who were thought to carry a risk of becoming such a spirit would have particular care and respect devoted to their burial and resting place to minimize the possibility of their spirit coming back into the world of the living. (However, it should be noted that most onryo are ghosts of women and very rarely men - and when the spirits of men manifest, it’s usually because of political disputes, grudges, or dying in wars. Adachitoka going for that trope reversal again?)

Onryo have one goal and one goal only in their cursed afterlife: to enact vengeance on those who had wronged them while alive. They are capable of causing harm to those in the world of the living, including physical injury, illness, misfortune, death, and even natural disasters.

Though the strength of an onryo’s curse varies on a case by case basis, they are regarded as incredibly powerful ghosts. Nothing illustrates this better than the Nihon san dai kaidan 日本三大怪談 or Japan’s Three Great Ghost Stories, telling three separate tales of yokai haunting the living: Banchō Sarayashiki 番町皿屋敷 (The Dish Manor at Banchou - Okiku), Botan Dōrō 牡丹燈籠 (Peony Lantern - Otsuyu), and Yotsuya Kaidan 四谷怪談 (The Ghost Story of Yotsuya - Oiwa). Two of the three stories here center around an onryo (Okiku and Oiwa respectively). I won’t go into details about the stories of Otsuyu and Oiwa here (they’re easily found online if you’re interested) but it should be noted that, even to this day, the crews involved in any production of Oiwa’s story (film, plays, you name it) first pay respects to her grave in Tokyo before beginning work since misfortune, physical harm, and even death is said to befall those who are involved in retellings of her story - that’s how feared the power of a truly vengeful onryo is.

*While the English side of the internet didn’t yield any results for “goryoujin”, I did search it in Japanese and from what I could read with my sucky reading skills and a dictionary, the concept was the same as what I’ve read about goryō in English.

1. First creation and most recent creation of 2020: this hmc edit was the first anime edit of the year (the very first one was red queen edit but it’s lit related so I’m not gonna link it here) and this itachi edit was the most recent one.

2. One of your favorite creations from 2020: probably this noragami edit. I love how it ended up looking especially the coloring since what I had in mind was totally different from the final result

3. A creation you’re really proud of: this team 7 edit and this itachi edit cause I stepped out of my “comfort zone” there and tried out some new styles and techniques so I’m really proud of making something that actually pleased me.

4. New style you tried this year and a gifset that uses it: i tried painting style!! I think i used it a little in each of my edits hehe but this bnha edit and this karasuno edit use it the best:))

5. A creation that took you forever: this bnha edit. I couldn’t get any motivation or inspiration plus i had exams back then. whatever i did i did like in 15 minutes and went to bed thinking i liked it. but the next I ended up hating the whole thing so it took at least 3 weeks (maybe even over a month) to finish it.

6. Your creation from 2020 that received the most notes: this noragami edit. I know this isn’t much but i didn’t even expect it to receive half of that amount lmao.

7. A creation you think deserved more notes: the most underrated of my creations are this fairy tail gifset and this itachi edit. I mean all of the creations deserve more notes and I’m not only talking about mine rn but eh guess this can’t be helped.

8. Creation with a favorite scene/quote: this hmc edit cause i don’t think there’s any other edit i created for a scene/quote hskshsj

A creation you made that breaks your heart: umm here’s a little problem I don’t think have an edit that “break my heart”. sure some panels can really be put into the category for example in 5th panel of itachis edit the mangacap is from when itachi said goodbye to sasuke during the war and that scene really made me cry but those emotions aren’t put into an edit as whole so I don’t consider it to be “heartbreaking” and the same goes for the other edits.

11. A ‘simple’ creation that you really love: this kageyama & hinata duo edit. It’s really simple and took me like an hour or two to finish it (it usually takes me at least 2-3 days😔) but i really like it!!

The Regalia and the God

Summary: The delivery god Yato has never been that popular with the public, but when it comes to fighting phantoms he’s one of the ones you want by your side. Every god needs a trusty Regalia by his side... that’s where Y/N and Yukine come in.

As little work as the delivery god Yato got the phantoms were always on our list. Yato stood atop a tower overlooking a school building. I stood next to him, the wind around us blowing our raven hair with it, Tomone, Yato’s other regalia, stood behind us, slowly waiting to be called forth. Of the two of us Nora was the more useful. Nora was a dagger, I was more of a guiding piece. I helped Yato and Tomone perfectly time their attacks, seeing more than their eyes would let them. When in regalia form I was a stainless steel ring that he wore on his middle finger of his left hand. 

We each had different names when he called forth his regalia. Tomone was known as Hanki and I was Norikki when called. 

Yato held a five yen piece in his hand, flipping it in the air. “Payment received. You have made a wish and it has been heard loud and clear.”

Tomone looked down at the giant phantom before us. It held the body of a snake and its tail stretched all over the building. “Does this phantom seem especially large to you?”

I looked behind us at Tomone. “It’s exam season, there’s a lot of stressed out kids.”

Yato looked behind us as well and smiled. “Everyone’s on edge, but with you guys I can take this thing down easily. Ready to go you two?”

Tomone and I spoke together. “I’m ready when you are.”

Yato jumped off the edge of the tower and flew down toward the phantom. He called out names. “Hanki, Norikki, come forth.” Yato hit the top of the phantom and stomped him some before jumping back into the air for his regalia. Yato caught Tomone as a dagger with one hand and grabbed me in his other hand, putting me on his finger. 

My guidance kicked in. “Yato, aim to slice his tail with Hanki, fly down at him straight and don’t make any type of moves until you hit the tail, that will get you the path with the least likely hood of him hitting you.”

“I hear you. Great job Norikki.” He grabbed onto Hanki tighter and positioned himself, soaring down toward the phantom again, reciting the rend to deliver the fatal blow on him. “This is the land of the rising sun. Your desecration shall not be allowed. I now lay thee waste with the Hanki and expel thy vast defilement! Rend!” Yato stayed the course that I had laid out for him. Slice after slice we made our way back to the ground. Yato landed with grace and looked back at the phantom that was disappearing. “Bye now.”

The phantom turned into black smoke and evaporated. Yato was clearly happy with himself. “Is that all it had? I didn’t even break a sweat.”

As Yato sat on the ground, happy with himself Tomone and I were growing impatient. It wasn’t necessarily fun to be in regalia form when there was no action going on. She spoke before I did. “Hey Yato, are you forgetting something?”

He snapped into the realization. “Oh, crap. Revert Tomone. Revert Y/N.” 

We both reverted to our human forms again and stood before Yato. Tomone sniffed her clothes and looked back at Yato. “Didn’t break a sweat, huh?”

Yato grabbed his chest and hung forward in embarassment. “Show some respect, huh?” He turned to her. “I’m your master.”

“Actually, we need to talk about that.” Yato looked up at her with a confused glance and she continued. “I’m quitting. I won’t be your Regalia anymore.”

My jaw dropped. “You’re kidding right? It’s only been like three months since you joined us.”

“It’s felt like three years! I can’t take it anymore! Living like a vagrant with a minor god who doesn’t even have his own shrine! I can’t do it!” Tomone started sobbing. 

Yato looked at her. “Hey, shouldn’t I be the one who’s crying here?”

She looked over at me. “I don’t know how you can even do this. You’re probably only able to do it because you’re dating him. I can’t see how anyone who could do it otherwise.”

Yato began flailing his arm. “Find. Stop wailing already. I can take a hint.” He began to draw Tomone’s name. “It’s over. I hereby release you.” Her symbol on her hand floated and the disappeared, letting her free. 

She giggled. “That’s so much better.”

Yato was beginning to get annoyed. “Just so you know the usual practice is to give at least a full month’s notice before you quit. It’s common courtesy.”

“As if you deserve any courtesy.” She began to walk away. “Later, loser!”

I began to walk forward, ready to go after Tomone, when Yato grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled me backwards. 

She was still taunting as she walked away. “You’re just an aimless drifter in a tracksuit who likes to play at being a god.”

I fought against him. “Come back here and say that to our faces you coward!”

Yato freed one of his hands and threw it in the air. “Damn you!” He was mad now. “Don’t you dare come crawling back once I hit it big! Just you wait and see!” He let me going, knowing I was calmed down enough. I wrapped my arm around his back as he spoke. “Soon enough I’ll have one hundred and twenty million worshippers and all the other gods will envy me!”

I raised a fist. “You ungrateful wretch!”

When she was out of our line of side I turned my head to look up at Yato who now had his arm wrapped around my waist. “Don’t listen to her Yato, she doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She’s insane. You’re going to be the world’s biggest god some day, I just know it.” I smiled at he smiled back. 

He put his hand on the side of my cheek and slowly ran it down my face. “How did I get so lucky?” He put his lips to mine before letting go and taking a spray can out of his pocket. “Let’s get tagging! We need to find some new jobs.”

Any surface we could find that was big enough we were tagging. His name and phone number littered most walls in the city already. As we tagged, Yato was still steaming. “Stupid wretch. I can’t believe a regalia actually quit on me.” He walked over to the bench and patted the place next to him when he sat. He reached into his track suit and pulled a bottle filled with five yen coins. “Pretty meager savings for us.” He put his arm behind me and leaned his head back. “I’ll never have a shrine, will I?”

“We’ll make it through Yato, we always do. Just give it time. Like I said earlier, you’re going to be an amazing god, just give it time.”

He sighed. “Right now, finding a new regalia comes first. As much as I love you, I need some type of weapon. You’re an amazing regalia, but not for dealing the fatal blow.” He kissed the side of my head. “God or not, without a regalia I’m unarmed.” He paused. “No, worse than that. I’m essentially naked! I can’t go out on any jobs like this.”

He jumped up, nearly knocking me off the bench. He was starting to doubt himself again. I tried to reassure him. “Yato, don’t bea-”

He cut me off. “Of course, it’s not like I’ve got a ton of work anyway.” His cellphone rang and I had never seen him take it out of his pocket so quickly. “Hello there and thank you for calling! Fast and affordable, delivery god Yato at your service!” I couldn’t believe the faces he was making. “Milord’s gone missing, that’s awful. We’ll be right there to gather more information and then be on the move.”

Yato turned to me and I smiled. “Do we have a job?”

His smile spread across his face. “We have a job.”

Taking One’s Own Life

The concept of God and Regalia is further explored in chapter 4 where Yato and Yukine takes on a job request to purify one of the frequent suicide locations in Japan, the train station, that is contaminated with Phantoms or evil spirits. Even though a barrier was established by one of the Gods for prevention measures, those who are touched and influenced by Phantoms can't be stopped. This may mirror those who are suffering from depression and other serious mental illnesses. It is explained that the souls of those who committed suicide can't be a Regalia or Shinki, a spirit that serves as a tool for a God, unlike victims of murder or accident who deserve another life as they wanted to keep on living. This concept underlines how precious life is and that no matter how unfavorable a situation is, it exists so we can appreciate the nice days even more.

BBC reporter Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo reported that although suicide rate in Japan had decreased slightly from 2008 until 2020, over 20,000 cases were reported in 2020. Another article summarized that many had died more due to suicide than the Covid-19 virus. 

Iki Hiyori is the main female protagonist in Noragami, even though she is mortal she got herself tangled with the far shore which enables her to see Phantoms, Gods and supernatural roaming around and even becoming one herself. By putting the audience in her shoes, we are able to understand the characters and the world in Noragami better.   

Suicide is deeply investigated in the series through the character named, Suzuha, a young Regalia serving the God of War known as Bishamonten or Vaisravana. Due to the huge amount of Regalia living in the Bishamonten household, Suzuha was forgotten and neglected of use by his own God, even though he still waited patiently for her for thousands of years, which led him to willingly accept his fate in the hands of a tainted Regalia and Phantoms. This loss caused so much grieve in the Bishamonten household and even affected Yukine who finally found a friend in the Far Shore.

The tragedy in the series serves to emphasize on how our actions can drastically affect someone's life, whether we lend a hand or completely disregard those who are in need. The amount of impact on someone’s life just by asking them about their day or being by their side until they feel slightly better is the least we can do. It’s better to be able to listen to their stories rather than attending their funeral and never see them again. 

‘Boundary’ refers to a Regalia’s ability to create a barrier to protect them from evil spirits. Keeping that mind, Suzuha showing no regret nor intention to escape from the pack of Phantoms suggests his wish to surrender his second life in the hands of the corrupted spirits rather than remaining in the Far Shore, forgotten and unneeded by his own God.
