How to Identify Red Deadnettle
Originally posted on my website at https://rebeccalexa.com/how-to-identify-red-deadnettle/
Name: Red Deadnettle (Lamium purpureum)
Range and typical habitat(s): Native to large areas of Europe and Asia. Introduced invasive in United States, New Zealand, and  scattered areas of South America
Tumblr media
Distinguishing physical characteristics (size, colors, overall shapes, detail shapes): Keep your eyes on lawns, gardens, roadsides, and other sunny areas this spring, and you may very well see the green and purple foliage of red deadnettle.
These heart-shaped leaves with softly serrated edges are covered in fine hairs. Leaves near the top of the slender, square-shaped stem are more of a reddish purple hue, while lower, larger leaves are a medium green. The leaves rarely exceed an inch and a half in length, and are attached to the stem with a slender stalk. Each leaf has palmate veins–several primary veins all starting near the stem–branching off multiple times into a reticulated network of smaller veins.
Tumblr media
At the top of the stem, which may be almost a foot long in extraordinary specimens, you may find tiny pinkish purple trumpet-shaped flowers. A close look reveals one large petal at the top, two smaller ones at the bottom, and sometimes a few tiny ones in the space in between. While flowers are easily in evidence this time of year, red deadnettle may flower in other seasons if conditions are favorable. As it is an annual, it will die back in fall, but new generations are quick to germinate before winter sets in. For those wishing to remove it from their gardens, the shallow root systems mean that it is easy to pull up, especially in wet soil.
Tumblr media
Red deadnettle is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae). While it resembles a very tiny stinging nettle (Urtica spp.), its tiny hairs do not cause irritation, hence being described as “dead”. Other common names for this plant include purple deadnettle and purple archangel.
Other organisms it could be confused with and how to tell the difference: Purple henbit (Lamium amplexicale) is the most common lookalike for red deadnettle. They inhabit the same habitat types and are of similar size and colors. Upon closer inspection, the leaves are a good way to tell the difference. Henbit leaves are more rounded in shape with a scalloped, rather than serrated, edge. In fact, they almost give the impression of one large round leaf surrounding the square stem, especially near the top. The upper leaves have no stalks, while lower leaves have short stalks. While henbit has similar flowers, they are longer than those of deadnettle.
Tumblr media
Note how henbit’s leaves and flowers are shaped and arranged differently than deadnettle’s.
Ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) is similar to purple henbit, but the rounded, scalloped leaves are often a darker green on a green to dark red stem. Also, all the leaves have a small stem. It is easily differentiated from deadnettle by its flowers, which although being of a similar shaped are blue to purple in color. Ground ivy is also more shade-tolerant than deadnettle. As with the others, it is a European plant that has become invasive in North America.
Tumblr media
Yellow archangel (Lamium galeobdolon) is yet another European wildflower that has taken root in North America and New Zealand, and to a lesser degree in South America. Its size is the most obvious way to differentiate it from red deadnettle and the rest; it grows on a single stalk that may be over thirty inches tall. The serrated, oval leaves and the yellow flowers are also larger than those of deadnettle, and there is no reddish tint to the foliage.
Tumblr media
The stinging nettles (Urtica spp.) can similarly be differentiated from red dead nettle by size. Particularly tall specimens may reach seven feet high, and the green, heart-shaped leaves can be up to six inches long. The leave margins are more sharply serrated and the end is pointier. And, as the name suggests, the leaves and stems have hairs that inject irritating chemicals into the skin.
Tumblr media
Anything else worth mentioning?Red deadnettle is a beginner-friendly edible plant for foraging. Henbit is the plant it’s most likely to be confused with, and it is also edible. People most commonly eat the young leaves and flowers at the top of the plant; they may be eaten raw or cooked. Because it is an invasive species, you are encouraged to pick the whole plant before it goes to seed, eat what you want of it, and compost the rest.

This plant is called the 'yellow archangel' in English (Lamium galeobdolon, or Lamiastrum galeobdolon). It's actually a deadnettle species with yellow flowers in spring.
(the rest are wild strawberries and dandelions)

does Hastur know???
ok correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Hastur knows about the whole Beelzebub running off with Gabitch...
so, IMAGINE the reaction of Hastur when he finds out about what happened!!! Imagine you're sitting in hell, and you see Dagon, Shax ect come back to hell. However, one thing wrong! where's our lord Beelzebub??? They have not come back to hell, so you assume that they must be discussing the matter about the missing arch angel... right?
all of a sudden you hear the voice of Dagon come onto the speaker....
"ALL DEMONS EXEPT HASTUR PLEASE COME TO THE MEETING ROOM FOR AN ANNOUNCEMENT!!!"
you think this is unusual and make your way towards the meeting room where you see Shax and Dagon standing at the Pedi stool facing everyone. they both look disappointed, and they look at each other in said disappointment. shax proceeds to say they're next sentence.
" FOR SAFETY OF OUR STAFF AND COWORKERS WE ADVISE YOU ALL TO REMAIN IN THIS ROOM WHILE WE GIVE SOME... WORRYING NEWS TO THE DUKE HASTUR!!!"
you and all the other demons remain in the room while Shax and Dagon walk towards the presentation room where you can faintly see Hasturs coat.
you stand there for about 5 minutes, waiting, watching, listening for whatever is coming. All you know is that it's not something you want to be here for.
"WOT?! THAT F**KING B*TCH!!! THEY CAN'T JUST LEAVE ME-YU- US!!! I SWEAR TO F**KING SATAN, I WILL DESTROY YOU AND ALL OF BLOODY HELL *more cursing and angrier Hastur noises*"
after this outrage from our dear, dear Hastur he decided to lock himself inside of his apartment you can faintly hear the sobbing of him and the mumbling.
"How could they do this to me... why does everyone i care about leave me... they said that they would never abandon me..."

aziraphales favorite color canonically being the exact same shade as crowley’s eyes, even going out of his way to plead “but it’s pretty :(((“ to crowley as crowley says he just completely hates it, and then going on to lose the ability entirely to see the color as crowley puts on his glasses for the last time because of both of their inability to be open & honest with each other is so devastating...
and heaven is so white and dull, holding in no color whatsoever, and aziraphale is just going to crave the yellow that once gave him feelings that now he realizes is just unadulterated pure love so bad its going to or will almost kill him & the closest thing he’ll have to it is the shimmering gold on his archangel clothes that will constantly remind him of……of…….OH GOD SOMEONE FUCKING SEDATE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

02/05/2022-Bank holiday Monday: Blog 2 of 2: Duke of Burgundy and more at Noar Hill
As anticipated once home as it did at the end of the week off of day trips which we had instead of last week’s Pembrokeshire trip last year when we postponed it until this year due to impacts of the pandemic, attention turned to our yearly trip to Noar Hill in the South Downs to look for this epic butterfly. On the way there were such colourful scenes of oilseed rape covered yellow fields which we always see on the way there and saw from Noar Hill again today and bluebell and white wild garlic covered forests. I also saw a lovely Roe Deer in a field on the way.
It was a bit fifty fifty for if we would see dukes today as they are one that is mostly visible in the sun, but the walk got off to a good insect start with great views of a bee on some white deadnettle also known as bee nettle which I took the third picture in this photoset of and was pleased with and some interesting beetles, my first ever alder leaf beetles on the track up to the hill which was lovely to see. In a really good couple of days and actually when considered really good week of hearing birds for us I had some early excitement as I believe I heard a Tawny Owl briefly. Then the vocal acrobatics of a Song Thrush, one of my favourite bird songs greeted us on arrival into the reserve. A quintessential sound of the countryside a Yellowhammer soon chipped in with Chiffchaff heard well later on the walk too.
After one quick sighting of a butterfly in the quarry at the start where we often see Duke of Burgundy which may or may not have been one, we had a packed and glorious few minutes in a similar area at the top of the site. Firstly a small butterfly flew by with an orange glow, when it settled I saw it was a Small Heath my first of the year of this nice bright butterfly. Then within minutes when looking for this one again, as a bit of sun poked through, I came across another little one emitting a bright orange glow. It was a Duke of Burgundy. I was so thrilled to watch this one with wings opened and closed for a few minutes and see two more on the rest of the walk round. I always feel so lucky to see these as they are one of my favourite butterflies, one of our most beautiful for me and one of the most precious and quite rare. But to see one on a largely overcast day felt splendid and I felt so lucky. It was a pleasure to take in their intricate and pretty markings they really are such a delicate and wonderful natural work of art. Another amazing wildlife moment lately. I took the first and sixth pictures in this photoset of this first one we saw.
These took my butterfly year list to a pleasing 17 as the butterfly season grows more and more which I am happy with it competes well with how many butterflies I had seen at this stage in previous years as everything is falling into place nicely.
Like Lakeside this morning I admired the immense green colours in the trees here as well as nice panoramic views. I took the fourth, fifth and ninth pictures in this photoset of views here today, and tenth of the lovely bush I believe Mexican orange in the garden when home. I saw some great flowers this afternoon at Noar Hill too including lots of cowslips painting the sloping landscape a nice yellow, some smashing early purple orchids a key species at Noar Hill which I took the eighth picture in this photoset of I liked admiring their leaves today and have had a great week for them, pretty marsh bedstraw the first I ever recall seeing, garlic mustard, cow parsley including adorning the verges of the lane which I took the second picture in this photoset of, speedwell, ground ivy, lots of great clumps of spurge shown in the seventh picture in this photoset, lovely yellow deadnettle alongside the white deadnettle and pretty pink herb-Robert. There was a nice bit of maple leaf like there was at Lakeside earlier too.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first ever Alder Leaf beetle, my first of one of my favourite butterflies the Duke of Burgundy this year, my first Small Heath of the year, probable Green-veined White, two of my favourite birds the Jay and Red Kite with a Buzzard seen well on the journey back too, Whitethroat, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Robin, woodlice, bee, moth and I heard Song Thrush, Yellowhammer, Pheasant and possibly Tawny Owl.
A very pleasant bank holiday to tag onto what was a sensational week away for me with so many amazing moments. Wishing you all a good week.

October 19, 2022 Wednesday
Today is the yellow chime candle.
And the rose quartz gemstone
Archangel Jophiel is the essential oil blend of the day. Her blend is titled The Beauty of Life.
I designed it with seven different essential oils all natural. Her divinely blessed braided intention, prayer, and meditation bracelet is designed with three strands of yarn. Yellow for cosmic truth, rose for the beauty of life, and light pink for creative wisdom. The message is, I am a beacon of light. Cosmic rays flow through me.
The book I chose to read a passage from is Pope Francis
Happiness in this life
In the video I created I read the introduction. Which happens to contain a mention of the beatitudes. It is something I talked about last year. I have a video on my YouTube channel if you are interested in watching it.
For those of you who know that I prayed for synchronicity, you wouldn’t know how important that is not only to myself but to a divine life. I recently restarted a yoga practice physically. I have been following one more specifically since I restarted. However I always invite spirit in which I also consider our solar system, to guide us as to what is most helpful. I believe that when we help ourselves we also help others. It is that thin red line.
Synchronistically, the yoga practice included a beginning meditation, and the practice itself was similar to the beatitudes. This type of knowledge and inspiration can be stated in more than one way. It can be said how not to be and it can be said how to be. It was written as in many things, mostly during times of struggle. I hesitate to use that word however truthful it may be. There have been times of different types of very unnatural negativities.
We can acknowledge them if we wish to do so in an intelligent manner. But it is always important to focus on ourselves, our family, and what is important. It is to live a happy healthy fulfilled life.
Today the planet is Neptune.
The number today is two, the Elohim today is spirit, the element today is water.
It is the day of the multi universe and the day of the being of light.
Today is the root chakra, and we also concentrate on the throat chakra.
