izuku totally knows about anxiety and he knows how to deal w it when he has an episode. but he has a teensy bit of trouble when helping someone else (but he tries his best! don’t worry you shall get comforted). he grabs your hands, brings you over to a corner and tells you to breathe for 4 hold for 4 and he rubs your back and breathes w you. after you get your breathing in check, he’ll get some nice, cold water for you also. “hey it’s ok y/n, i’m here. i won’t let anyone hurt you, puppy.” if you’re not calmed down by then, then he’ll ask you to point out things you can touch, what you can taste, and something that is red or green. by then, you’re calmed down. if you like to be touched afterwards, he’ll give you the biggest hug in existence. if you don’t really like contact after, he’ll sit with you and tell you a funny story to get your mind off of what happened. overall, he does pretty good!

todoroki - “let’s go to a quieter place, love.” he’ll probs walk with you around the dorms two times before does anything. if you can’t get up/paralyzed by the episode, he’ll carry you up to your room and sit you on the bed (don’t worry about your weight! he’ll figure a way to get you up there w/o you having to move a muscle! 😡🥰). “ok, can you count to 50 for me, sweetheart?” after you count, he’ll make you some soft ice cubes to chew (aw man, i love me some soft ice. like snowcone ice 🤤). if your teeth are sensitive, he’ll make his hand cold amd put it on the back of your neck. if you’re not calm yet, he’ll ask you, “is there anything you want or need me to do right now?” and he’ll DO IT. anything you ask for at that moment, if attainable, he’ll do it or go get it. in the end he’ll cuddle w you or hold your hand and talk to you.

bakugou - alright, alright. this man has no idea how to help you. yes, he’s had anxiety attacks (cough, cough deku vs. bakugou #2), but he doesn’t calm down in a good way. he either goes on a run or works out or just fights his way through it. so when your having an anxiety attack or something like that, he’ll try his best to tell you “ok ok um uh y/n breathe in and out of some shit. fuck ok are you breathing?!” you’ll probably wince bc he fuckin yelled that in your ear and he’ll feel so bad. he’ll start panicking a lil bit but he takes you to recovery girl and tries to make her help you. recovery girl eventually calms you down and bakugou feels awful. you try to reassure him and tell him that he did perfectly fine taking you to the nurse hero. “no no no wait i’m supposed to be the one comforting you. shut up and let me comfort you. d-do you wanna go cuddle or something?” y’all go cuddle and he promises that he’ll do better next time “for sure, stupid.”

shoji - literally his reason for his quirk is to comfort people. kidding but i know he gives good hugs oml. but yea he’ll give you a great big hug and get you some water while saying really nice things to you. “hey hey youre okay. you’ve got me right?”

sero - hugs you and let’s you cry into his chest. another dude who i know who gives bomb bc have y’all seen how wide his shoulders are?? well anyways, he’ll give you water (like even hold the cup and everything 🥴) and he’ll say things like “talk to me. what’s wrong and what can i do?”

tokoyami - now fumikage is kinda awkward when it comes to feelings that aren’t love or sadness so he’ll probably just sit there with you, holding your hand, and not talk. he’ll just rub his thumb over your hand in a soothing manner.

satou - after you calm down and stop crying/shaking, he’ll tell you a bunch of jokes while holding you to his chest and you’ll fall asleep like that all cozy 🥺

aoyama - ofc after you calm down, he’ll point out every single thing that’s beautiful about you, from the pace that you book to the way you walk. “come on y/n, nobody that beautiful should be crying.”

ojiro - (🤤 before i go on, this man is SO seggsy and underrated) anyway, he’ll probably hold you and wrap his tail around you to make you feel extra loved 🥰. awwww and he’ll whisper stuff like “it’s okay i’m here for you. i’m not leaving you here.”

iida - (what a hunk. sorry this is supposed to be fluffy and i’m over here drooling) ok so he knows EXACTLY what to do. he’s def read up on how to comfort people, he’s the class rep (insert iida pushing up his glasses while smiling smugly y’all know). first, he gets you some water and rubs your back. if you can’t get your breathing down he’ll breathe with you and instruct you on how to breathe. remember he’s still iida so he’ll be a bit awkward at it. “ok breathe y/n. w-well i mean breathe with me. but if i’m talking to you you can’t see how i breathe. whatever just in for 4 out for 6. or was it in for 8??” at the end you kinda give up on relying on him and get your breathing down on your own. then he kinda hold your hand and legs you talk to him while he listens intently.

kaminari - pure panic on his part. he’s like ‘i love them so much i can’t let them die’ like denki i’m not dying. “o-ok so um i think breathe and uh calm down.” you look at him kinda angrily bc like you can’t just calm down STUPID. eventually he gives up and takes you to someone more competent. “i’m sorry baby that i couldn’t help you,” he’s holding you on your bed as you cuddle. “aw it’s ok denki.”

kirishima - first he knows how to get your breathing down and when he does that he wants to cheer you up. “let’s go on a walk.” so y’all go around town and he gets you whatever you want. by the end of it, you feel so happy.

and sorry mineta and koda stans i can’t really think of them like in a boyfriend role.

Best male characters in shoujo & josei manga - in my opinion, ofc

!!! Might contain spoilers about Love so Life, Faster than a Kiss, Last Game, Love Phantom, Special A, ReRe Hello, Kainushi wa Akuma, Sabaku no Harem, Max Lovely and Kimi ni Todoke. 

So, my criteria for this was:

1. is he toxic?

2. can he communicate properly with the female lead?

3. could I stand to talk with him for more than an hour?

That’s basically it. I used to love a bunch of male characters without realizing how douchey they actually were. Do I still love them? Yeah, but mostly because of nostalgia, I don’t actually consider them good men. 

I’m not saying the men in this list are perfect, cause c’mon we all know how manga characters - and people - are, but I think these are pretty great.  

Without further ado, here’s my - non ranked - fave MLs:

1. Matsunaga Seiji, Love so Life. 

This man is adorable, the best thing ever, I want him to myself. We don’t actually see a lot of romance in Love so Life, HOWEVER, Seiji is a responsible, caring, sweet guy. Once he gets his shit together he talks openly with the female lead about how he feels and how - because of their age difference - he’s willing to wait for her and that she doesn’t have to answer him right then and there or feel guilty if she doesn’t want to be with him in the future. 

Honestly, I really love him. He’s not a creepy older guy preying on a young girl, he respects her age and wants her to live her youth before settling down. Does he rely a bit too much on a 16yo? Yes, but I overlook it ‘cause I love him.

2. Ojiro Kazuma, Faster than a Kiss. 

Again, not a teacher/older man preying on a young girl. He’s her teacher and their relationship starts out with him wanting to protect/help his student out. If I’m not mistaken, he doesn’t even kiss her until she graduates, HOWEVER, he does make her wear sexy costumes, which is problematic. 

Overall, he’s sweet, helps her a lot, really loves her and wants to protect her (and her cute litlle brother). 

3. Yanagi Naoto, Last Game.

Yanagi starts out as a douchey rich kid who thinks he’s superior to everyone else until he’s beaten by the female lead and wants to defeat her. Overtime, he realizes he’s actually in love with her. He’s shy when it comes to her, and very patient. 

Did he follow her to middle school, high school and college? Yes. Would I find that creepy in real life? Absolutely. Can I excuse it because it’s a shoujo manga? Yes again. 

I think he’s a solid male lead for a shoujo manga, and I personally like him, but I definitely see issues with his behavior. 

4. Hase Kei, Love Phantom.

I want him. He’s older than the FL, so he often teases her, but I find it pretty adorable, especially when he’s the one feeling shy. Excluding chapter 01, I can’t remember any obvious flaws in his behavior. To sum up, I love him. 

5. Takishima Kei, Special A. 

Here is an OG male lead that I wouldn’t punch or kick.

Kei is handsome, rich, super smart and he doesn’t give a fuck about anything except the FL. She’s extremely competitive and he always goes along with her whims. He’s protective of her and a tad possessive, but it doesn’t really bother me. He’s pretty solid. 

6. Suou Minato, ReRe Hello.

Minato has his flaws as a person, but as a man/boyfriend, I really love him. I feel like he really cherishes the FL and usually respects her independence. If you haven’t read this manga, I definitely recommend you do!

7. Albrecht Ebel, Kainushi wa Akuma.

He’s super hot and sassy, I love it. Does he sort of sexually harass the FL? Yes, frequently. Does it bother me? Not really, to be honest. And I absolutely despise when male characters are forceful or rapey. I don’t know how to explain it, but at the same time that he teases her, he’s extremely sweet. I know this intro sounds bad, but I want to be upfront about it. Major spoilers ahead: in one of the final chapters, he’s feeling possessive and tries to have sex with her (she didn’t contest it), and when he comes to, she’s trembling and he stops, apologizes, says that there’s no meaning to it if she doesn’t want to and stays distant from her until she approaches him after realizing they love each other.

He is super sweet and she does love him, of course (it’s still a shoujo manga after all). I think everyone should give it a read (and you can delve into the wonderful world of flirting that is Kaji Eiri’s mangas). 

(Real quick, part of the reason I love her work so much is that the main couple flirts consistently throughout the manga, and one thing that bothers me a lot in shoujo manga is when the protagonists only get together in the last chapter.)

8. Sahara Taki, Max Lovely. 

Honestly, I just really love their relationship. This is a 20 year old manga but it’s really solid. I’ve re-read this a bunch of times and I absolutely love it. It’s not romance exclusively, there’s a pretty dark background story, but I really enjoy it. And Taki is a pretty baby, super sweet with the FL and usually very honesy with her.

9. Prince Kallum, Sabaku no Harem.

Would I be one of many wifes to a handsome and rich prince? No. Do I treat manga as reality? God, no. 

He’s very amusing, loves to tease the FL and is pretty sweet. I really enjoyed reading this, I think it’s a solid shoujo with a great male lead, and should definitely be on your list if you haven’t read it yet. 

10. Kazehaya Shouta, Kimi ni Todoke.

Is he my favorite male character? No. To be perfectly honest, he’s not even on my top 10. But is he a good man/boyfriend? Yes, and that’s why he’s on this list.

Like I said in the beginning of the post, there are toxic male characters that I still love despite them being shitty. 

Kazehaya is a popular type but he’s super nice and charismatic. He treats the FL which is usually dismissed by everyone with a lot of respect and care. I think he’s a bit too shy and indirect, which can sometimes jeopardize his relationship with her, but other than that, he’s a great guy. 

BONUS 01: not actually a boyfriend but I love him

Tsuruga Ren, Skip Beat. 

Now, is Ren perfect? No, he has a lot of flaws. A LOT. But I absolutely love him and I think he’s maturing. 

BONUS 02: I don’t personally love this type of character for myself, but I really like him 

Suoh Tamaki, Ouran High School Host Club. 

Like I said, he’s not my type, but I think he’s pretty cute and adorable and totally deserves to be on the list, so I made this spot just for him. 

BONUS 03: douchey guys I was blindly in love with as a teenager

1. Usui Takumi, Kaichou wa Maid-Sama. 

Do I hate Usui? No, not at all. I actually really like him. 

But he’s possessive, secretive, dismissive and forceful.

2. Irie Naoki, Itazura na Kiss. 

Naoki has always been - in my opinion - a dick. He pissed me of quite a bit even back then. But, since I always make sure to wear my shoujo anime/manga glasses to ignore problematic behavior when I’m reading manga, I don’t hate him.

! Please don’t get me wrong, even with my shoujo anime/manga glasses there are certain things that I can’t ignore and that really drive me crazy (ex. rape, racism, fat shaming, etc) 

It’s simply that I can understand that there’s a huge gap between manga and reality, and as long as I can recognize the problematic behaviors, I feel like I can enjoy them and respect the poetic license behind it.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Suna walked away from Atsumu, not wanting to deal with him and whatever’s going on with the said setter. Practice was slow, and somewhat boring, so Rintarō just wanted to get spiking drills over with. He ducked under the net to retrieve the ball he had spiked, and while doing so, thoughts subconsciously floated about his mind about what he had done that set off Atsumu’s impatience.

“Ya know damn well what I’m talkin’ about. Yer stiff, and yer not jumpin’ as high as you usually do,” Atsumu stated, as he held a ball in his hands. Resting the ball on his hip, he continued to berate Suna’s behavior in that one spike. However, before Atsumu could let another snarky remark out of his mouth, their team captain stopped him by grabbing Atsumu’s shoulder. The setter looked over at Kita, who had a scary look in his eyes that contrasted from his usually calm demeanor. Suna quickly scuttled away from the other side of the net before more arguments could ensue, and practice continued on.

Later, in the club room after practice, Kita approached Suna, who was buttoning his uniform top, and apologized on Atsumu’s behalf. The latter dismissed the apology, calling it water under the bridge. However, Kita did pay attention to Suna’s strange behavior, as he seemed more… preppy, for lack of a better word. Osamu, leaning against the wall of the club room while snacking on some chips, commented on how Suna’s actions were slightly more energetic than before.

“Huh, you guys are right. He has been actin’ a little more excited,” Ojiro exclaims, adding a slight chuckle at the end. Everyone else dryly laughs, agreeing with him.

Osamu chuckles, adding on, “If you can call standin’ a little straighter ‘more excited.’ ‘S like someone’s forcin’ him to pretend to care.” Suna scoffs at this. He loosely ties his tie around his neck, while retorting back that he’s acting as normal as he ever could.

“Maybe it’s a girl,” Atsumu taunted, continuing from where he left off during practice. Everyone else in the room went silent, especially Suna. Maybe it was the practice tiring him out, but he felt a slight layer of sweat washing over his skin, wetting his uniform. Like it would help, Suna also tugged his blazer on, along with his backpack. He pulled his phone out of his backpack and, rolling his eyes, once again dismissed Atsumu’s teases. Suna walked out of the club room, with everyone else in the room watching him, as he mumbled on about he didn’t want to get caught up in whatever dumb antics Atsumu, and to an extent, Osamu, was planning. Suna’s teammates still in the club room followed shortly after, but kept a reasonable distance from the middle blocker.

They watched as he walked away from the club room, his figure slowly growing smaller and farther from their eyesight. As Suna made his way to the school gates, he encountered another person walking towards his same direction. He casually raised a hand to this person, waving, and the other person shortly after did the same. They began walking side to side, exiting the school together. Ginjima, who also looked on, had his mouth wide open.

“So it really was a girl.”

“How was practice, Suna-han?” The girl asked, looking up at the boy with glistening eyes. Suna straightened his typically-slouched back, making himself appear taller than he was before. He sighed, not wanting to remember the events of practice today.

Slipping his phone into his pants pocket, he replied curtly, “It wasn’t that fun.”

‘Because it’s more fun being with you,’ he thought. (Y/N) laughed, as she told him that’s what he always says. Ever since he transferred to Inarizaki at the beginning of their second year, (Y/N) has always made every one of their times together special. She was able to make him feel welcome, especially being in a totally new environment that was vastly different from his old school in Tokyo. Recently he came to terms with his feelings for her and began to see her as more than a friend, hence his more “preppy” behavior, the sudden change with which his teammates had to cope.

‘Your laugh is so cute,’ he thought again. Smiling slightly, he told her, “Well, it’s the truth.”

As they walked on, a multitude of thoughts swarmed Suna’s mind. Sometimes it hurt that he had such an expressive mind, for they rang in his ears, as if calling out to him to say these thoughts out loud.

‘I wish we were dating.’

‘It’s too cold outside. Do you want to come home with me and cuddle?’

‘I just want to kiss you all over your pretty little face.’

“You just dropped love into my heart and that’s all I needed.”

“Huh? Did you say something, Suna-han?” (Y/N) asked, wanting him to repeat what she thought, and hoped, she heard. However, Suna narrowed his eyes and turned his face away from hers, so that she wouldn’t see whatever fluster was visible on his face.

“Nothing.”

Darn. (Y/N) hoped to hear what he said again, just to get that familiar butterflies-in-her-stomach feeling once more.
