On Voting in America

So one of the most profound comments on routine chores that I've ever encountered was, hilariously, the Pickle Rick episode of "Rick & Morty," where (after a lot of shenanigans have already ensued) this therapist absolutely lays Rick out:

"I have no doubt that you would be bored senseless by therapy, the same way I'm bored when I brush my teeth and wipe my ass. Because the thing about repairing, maintaining, and cleaning is: it's not an adventure. There's no way to do it so wrong you might die. It's just work. And the bottom line is some people are okay going to work and some people, well, some people would rather die. Each of us gets to choose."

I think about this at least once a week — usually while I'm doing my laundry or sweeping or some other task that needs doing and won't get me anything more than clean clothing or a dog-hair-free floor. There's no Pulitzer for wiping down your microwave or scrubbing your toilet; no one's awarding you for getting all the dishes out of the sink. At best you have the satisfaction of crossing it off your list.

Voting is very much the same (and I'm talking about the US here, as an American). Sure, you sometimes get a sticker; but nobody's going to cheer for you. There's no adventure here, no potential for anything more than crossing something off of a list. It's a chore, something that needs doing in order to repair, maintain, and yes even clean. So I get why people don't like doing it.

And I've decided I don't give a shit.

Do it anyway. Your country takes astonishingly little from you — taxes, the once-in-a-blue-moon jury duty, and a theoretical draft that hasn't been used in over half a century and likely will never be again — but it asks you (asks! not requires! not demands!) to vote once a year. It's not always easy; especially in conservative states, the impediments to vote can be ridiculous. But it is once a year and unlike in our nation's all-too-recent past, you will not die if you do it.

In fact, the worst outcome from voting these days is that the person or issue that you vote for loses — but you won't know if they lose until after the election. Polls are less accurate now, for a whole host of reasons; you cannot know until after the election who or what will win. This makes your vote more valuable than possibly ever before.

Use that power. Not because it's exciting or even rewarding, but because your vote is what keeps our country's metaphorical teeth from falling out and our metaphorical ass from stinking.

Brush, wipe, vote.

What ratings do you write most of your fics under?

T. I can't really write sex, alas, but I love making characters swear and drink alcohol, especially the latter (I suspect I'm sublimating my own wish to drink way more often than I actually do), and I feel like that's the most appropriate rating for that.

What are your top three fandoms?

ASOUE with 20 works, Dracula with 6, and Turn: Washington's Spies with 5. All statistics are going to be not quite accurate in my case though, because a lot of my fics are posted both in English and in Russian. So that's technically one story, but two works. For example, the 5 Turn fics in question are two fics in original Russian, the English translations of both of them, and a collection of my old fandom poems in which one poem is for Turn. (I am very much not translating poems into English because trying to make them rhyme would drive me insane). On the other hand, most of my ASOUE fics in Russian are posted as a single work, each chapter being a new short fic, but their English translations are posted as separate works. If I was posting both Russian and English versions separately, the number of my ASOUE works would've been even higher.

What is the top character you write about?

Lemony Snicket appears in 12 of my fics (counting stories, not works, i.e. not counting the original and the translation as separate stories). Fitting for the first-person narrator and a fucking legend.

I want everyone to know that this is the point at which I realized that I don't need to count all that manually because the list of my own works also has the same sorting and filtering menu as each fandom tag. I may be stupid. Anyway! Lemonberry ice is, of course, on top with 9 works, or 6 stories if we don't count the original and the translation separately. Next is Duchess R/Beatrice with 7 works, or 4 stories. The third relationship on the list is actually a platonic one - Duchess R & Lemony with 7 works/4 stories too. If "pairings" here are to mean romance only, then Smoker/Tashigi, Quincey/Jack, and Duchess R/Sally Sebald all are at 4 works/2 stories.

Not trying to subtract originals and translations here - Pre-Canon (15), Post-Canon (15), and - see the first question - Alcohol (8), lol. Oh, and Canon-Typical Violence also has 8.

Does any of this surprise you?

No. Perhaps the only surprising part is that I've written two R/Sally fics? Neither of my stories in which they appear is centered on this ship, but it's there. I can't even say I ship them, it's just that they're among the few Sugar Bowl Generation characters who are likely to be still alive by the end of the series, so I like to give them a little happy ending together.

Ok its crazy people dont talk more about Barry the tv show Barry's cop stuff because like obviously no mainstream tv show will ever do a full critique of the police or anything but Barry kind of did it the best right. Like constantly portraying cops as ineffective and useless and wrong. The cops never got to be cool or right or in some way necessary and in the end they wrongly arrested Gene and led to Barry getting this completely inaccurate legacy that absolves him of what he did.

i think the funniest thing coming from having a hands-on experience with sex is learning that some of the "fanfiction lied to you, here's how it really is irl" takes have even less in common with reality than some random smut you run across on tumblr

in the end, sex is a very personal experience, there's no such thing as universal recipe for what will feel good and what will turn you on. and the other way round too. the key is to have open mind and to experiment - not only with a partner - and to remember sex is supposed to be fun

Heart Pirates - Intro

Bepo and Law are the youngest Heart Pirates at 22, and 26, Shachi and Penguin are 27 and 28 respectively; everyone else is in their late-20s to mid-40s. Cal is early 20s but I don’t much consider him ‘canon’ a lot of the time

As far as we’ve seen from brief glimpses in the anime and manga, it looks like Fang could be the Heart’s helmsman - he’s grown to view Bepo quite fondly through their interactions since Bep is the resident navigator - Fang likes teasing his polar friend but will just as quickly come to Bepo’s aid and defense, battle axe at the ready

Ikakku is one of the Tang’s engineers and self-appointed mom friend of the crew - she’s never in one place for very long, running up and down to make sure everything’s in tip top shape at all times; if Law isn’t around, Ikakku insists that everything would fall apart if she wasn’t there to make everyone pick up their own slack She also refills her insomniac captain’s coffee frequently and uses that opportunity to act like an affectionately annoying older sibling

Although Bepo is usually the one people would assume is Law’s first mate, duties pertaining to it are split between him, Penguin, and Shachi -the three of them and Ikakku converge a lot because the responsibilities they assign themselves tend to overlap, but Penguin typically still likes to keep a modicum of decorum when the others start getting cheeky and even Ikakku can’t resist joining in on the fun

Hake handles finances and Hoki helps them organize their hellish workspace - they’re both haughty and catty by trade, but can be sweet when they need to be - Hake was also a tattoo artist prior to joining the crew and is responsible for a lot (but not all) of the crew’s in tat work

Additionally, every Heart Pirate with the exception of Bepo has their jolly roger inked somewhere on their body, along with more personal tattoos for specific members in particular

Bas and Laeno are the chefs responsible for feeding this big ol’ Heart Pirate family, Dorie helps around when things get too hectic 

Law can’t be the only doctor on board, right? (especially with how frequently they go AWOL) Marl and Gul are the ones who handle most medical things if their captain isn’t around, although Law makes sure that at least a little more than two thirds of his crew have basic first aid knowledge if push comes to shove

Marl also sneaks candies to Bepo if he’s been particularly brave during a scary procedure that day 

I’d like to think that Uni also has some medical expertise before meeting Law (what’s behind the scarf sir you hiding some Katakuri teefies, maybe fishman or other beastly traits perhaps??? 👀) Clione likes to help to the best of his abilities but he’s ends up getting in the way sometimes; he’s better off running things in the boiler rooms

I’m not entirely sure what Ani’s role would be yet, but honestly that could lean well to them helping Jean Bart get acclimated to the crew once he’s brought on board as someone who generally fades into the background a lot and would know how everything runs, she’s showing peepaw the ropes with (mostly) an unbiased lens
