You are probably not going to understand why I am writing to you until the end of this. It's kind of poetic but please stick around.. I am deathly allergic to hornet/wasp/bee stings. I live in Canada where atm in Ontario we are dealing with an invasive giant hornet species that eats bees. So. I had to save the bees. Edit: I've been educated by husband and some lovely tumblr folks about it being a European Hornet! Still very deadly if she had stung me.

I went to take a nap. And found one crawling around my room floor. You could say I did not take a nap. Instead I grabbed a glass cup and put it overtop of her. She's very pretty, but for me she's pretty deadly. The closest books to stop the paranoia of her flipping the glass over were your books. American Gods and Stardust were too thick. Posed threat of also tipping glass over. So.. The Ocean at the End of the Lane it was.

Thank you for the book. It's a lovely read. And you could say it's helping save my life while my husband is out of the house at work.

Jumpscare: Hornet.

Edit/Update: I didn't kill her, but she was not doing well prior to my trapping her. I was going to wait to get husband to decide what to do with her, he's a Biologist so I knew he'd know better. I was very scared due to the fact I was home alone and initially had no cellphone around me to call 9-1-1 if she was to sting me. But when he came home she had curled up and passed on. We're a trap and release sort of fam. We DO live in the area where trees have been killed off by invasive moth species so I was worried she was invasive. Thank you to those peoples who educated me.

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023

Jeeves the famous fashion designer, one day was having coffee on the veranda at a cafe and reading a newspaper. In an instant this newspaper was snatched from his hands by a certain tall stranger. He hid his face in it, sat down opposite Jeeves at the table, and stood still. Reginald was about to be indignant, but a girl jumped out of the corner of the room, looking round with frantic eyes for this particular stranger. Without noticing him, she went on along the street, and the strange fellow awkwardly and apologetically returned the paper and fled. Jeeves remembered his hideous suit and tall, slender figure: he had long needed models of that build for his new men's collection. But everything happened so quickly that Jeeves didn't even have time to give him his business card.

The next day fate was favourable to Jeeves: walking along the seafront, he saw the couple again. They were talking in high tones, and the fellow with the long-suffering expression on his face was trying to get out of the conversation. Using all his charm and politeness, Jeeves stepped in and helped the stranger out of trouble. In return for the favour, Jeeves offered him a ride to his costume studio to try something on. So this is the moment:

In this au the Wooster family is in the business of manufacturing and selling high-end universal android servants all over England and the world. At some point their company invents a new model RJ0 - the ultimate android servant that can literally do everything and satisfy your every whim. It is perfect in everything, but because of the crude software it sometimes shows its character and acts not quite according to the master's expectations.

Thinking again about how the gender essentialism in WoT is aggravating not because there is gender essentialism in magic because that's the entire premise of the books but because RJ set to explore that particular premise without fully understanding how gender essentialism and patriarchy affects women differently that it does men. That's how you get Berelain's writing, the internal monologues of Nynaeve in tel'aran'rhiod, groups of women in power often written as petty squabbling fools, practically all the powerful female leaders at the start of the series will be depowered and humiliated by the end, the Aiel warriors being women presented as something foreign...

In RJ world, men are naturally stronger than women in the OP: this rule isn't subverted and permeates every aspect of his worldbuilding. There's a reason only the boys are ta'veren, that Mat ends up taking control of the armies over Elayne, that Perrin is naturally better at tel'aran'rhiod than Egwene, that Nynaeve the strongest channeler we've seen in a thousand years becomes a glorified battery for Rand in the end.

In a way, it's a fascinating psychological phenomenon that the entire premise of his fictional world is based on gender essentialism yet he doubled down on several core elements of gender essentialism instead of subverting them.

When I discuss gender essentialism in his work I do it so because he made it "gender essentialism: the fantasy edition", so while his women challenge gender essentialism in some ways, it's entirely legitimate to question why he didn't expand the subversion in other aspects of his world.

Normalise the "A is unlovable, B loves them anyway" trope, but instead of being a cold, unavailable difficult person with a bunch of traumas, A is just... A jerk. An asshole. An idiot. A walking chaos, the last person anyone would want to share a household with because it would be HORRIBLE.

And B just stands there, fighting the demons in their head because oh gosh. oh no. they might be IN LOVE A. There's a chance they'll stay connected to them for the rest of their lives, and they DON'T even MIND.

Tanya the Evil always gives me Emotions when I try to read it, which does make it harder to get thru each book despite how much I love it, but I think I've made a Mistake by trying to read it while listening to Sabaton's "The War to End All Wars" album.

Y'all, I hit the song Versailles while reading Tanya's internal monologue about the cost of war while she was in the mop up of Operation Lock Pick. Y'ALL, when I say I had Too Many Emotions to continue reading, especially while on an airplane surrounded by strangers, I mean I had SO MANY EMOTIONS.
