Recent Work: Yoga Photoshoot with Heather

While I was out of the country I received an email from Heather, who was looking for photographs for her yoga practice. After finding a space to use (Thanks, Airedale DC & Julia Dann!) we got to work on a sunny morning.

Heather moved with such calm and grace that I found myself at ease while taking photos. Doing some yoga of my own, I spent a good part of the shoot laying on the ground with her as I tried to capture the feel that she had specified during our talks.

It was a pleasure working with Heather, and I look forward to seeing where her business and military travels take her next.

✨ #fbf to this super potent post from 2 years ago around this time. I still experience these feelings from time to time but I am expanding like a mug ::DC voice:: and you can too! Happy Friday, lovers. I hope this gives someone what they need this morning. 🙏🏾💕✨ . . Every move we make on this path is fueled by faith. I didn't step into yoga as a line of work with a solid plan or business knowledge 🤦🏾‍♀️. Although at times I wish I did, I think falling and getting back up a few (read several) times has allowed the fire within me to burn even stronger. I just knew this was my calling. I've been rejected, shut down, doubted and felt shame. I've sat alone and thought about giving up. I've silenced those defeating voices in my head only for them to show up again to test my diligence. Do you really want this, Sihnuu? I continue to step into that space where I'm ready to learn and open to expand. I'm learning lessons and growing more business minded every day even as I've fought against it in the past. At times I grow impatient with my progress but I still have a ways to go and I'm going at the pace that suits me best. I'm turning my passion into a full blown lifestyle and it feels pretty legit here. I'm grateful to to be surrounded by and have the support of other souls on fire. . . . We jump forward from downward dog at the end of our #sunsalutations. There's actually a lot of jumping on the mat in #Ashtanga yoga be it from triangle (#Trikonasana) or downward facing dog (#AdhoMukhaSvanasana). I think there are physiological reasons for the jump based in the blood and nerves but am not 100% sure. What I DO know is that control is the name of the game and controlling your jump forward and jump back require use of the #BANDHAS. ------------------------------- 1) from downward facing dog bend the knees and lower the hips, crouching, ready to spring forward. Shoulders down the back. Collarbone broad. Fingers spread and engaged. 2) LOOK PAST THE EDGE OF YOUR MAT. "Over commit." - @mimirieger KEEP YOUR GAZE FORWARD THE ENTIRE TIME. 3) leading with the lower back/hips HOP forward. HOP meaning like a bunny you know exactly where your landing. No JUMPING (legs uncontrolled kicking all over the place OHMYGOD IM AIRBORNE FINAL- *thump*) but a hop. Light and distance based. Effortless. A simple transfer of weight into fingertips. "Hips high feet low." 4) slow the body down with the fingertips AND the navel and heels! HOW SWAY?! Lift the toes up towards the knees (flexing the foot/ankle) to keep the legs straight and engage #mulabandha. Draw the navel IN and UP to keep lower back straight and hips LIFTED.
