Welcome to the Yo-Kai Watch tournament!

Hi! Been wanting to put one of these together for a long time now, but I finally put it together now!

The submission form is at the bottom of this post, but for now here's a few rules.

This first bracket is JUST for yokai. I might do a human character battle at some point in the future, but this first round is yokai-only.

No jibanyan variants this first round! I'm gonna do a separate bracket just for Jibanyan variants.

Boss and legendary (alongisde merican legend/mystery legend) yokai are also gonna be excluded for their own thing.

Please don't submit stuff through the askbox! The form is the place for that!

Submissions close when I feel like I've got enough.

Submit as many characters as you like, but only send each submission once!

Propaganda is encouraged, but please only use it to lift up your faves rather than hurt the opposition.

Tbh I'm not really basing the comics off of the story of the games, although I'll definitely steal some quests or plot lines here and there because I'm unoriginal idk.

I'd assume if she were in the plot of the games it'd just play out like normal. My comics run more on the logic of the anime or manga, just silly random adventures that barely make sense and shit just happens for the fuck of it, sorry if that's a boring answer lol 😭 💀

Chemical Plant Zone Act 2:

Real talk, I think this is the best remix of Chemical Plant that I've heard. So many modern incarnations want to play it safe and stick to the exact theme, but this plays with it and properly gives it room to evolve!

While I'm sad they couldn't get a little further into the competition, I'm very glad they were able to get into the bracket in the first place!

There is one thing that I DESPERATELY need to share about these two though. I originally wanted to include it in the description for the ship, but it's far too strange and specific that I just couldn't.

The argument that these two have that starts a centuries long war? It's over DONUTS. And not even different types of donuts, no. They started a war because they couldn't decide which BRAND of cream-filled donuts was better.

And it gets even more stupid because in Yokai Watch 3, when they both switch sides and decide the other brand is better, you get the reveal that THEY NEVER EVEN TRIED THE OTHER BRAND BEFORE. They started a centuries long war over donut brands, without even trying the other brand once.

On a more fluffy side to the ship, after they initially make up, they spend 60 years with each other, with Toadal Dude even dragging Arachnus to events he wouldn't be attending if Toadal Dude weren't there. And I think there's something about the fact that across the games, they're only ever seen with each other, and when they're not with each other, they're still talking about the other. Within the Yokai Watch games, there is no Toadal Dude without Arachnus and there is no Arachnus without Toadal Dude, and I just think that's cute.

Uh, anyways, Yokai Watch is a peak game series and I think everyone should play it. This is my propaganda to go mod your DS and download Yokai Watch 1, 2 and 3.

S14 Round 1

Weird Clones

Prince was a lonely kid who was forgotten by everyone, until he met Puppy. Even though Prince was incredibly rude and stuck-up with Puppy, he becomes his first real friend, and Puppy says that he’ll never forget Prince.

But oops! Prince gets turned into a monster and Puppy is forced to watch as Prince is killed.

But then, Puppy meets New Prince, a clone of Prince made using pieces of his soul, but New Prince doesn’t have Prince’s memories, and doesn’t remember who Puppy is.

New Prince pretends to be Prince for a bit, but Puppy confronts him and assures New Prince that they can be friends without New Prince pretending to be someone he isn’t. And even though they become friends once more, Puppy is haunted by the fact that he still sometimes confuses the two Princes, while New Prince is haunted by the nature of his own existence.

Worlds Stupidest War

Bone and Flesh were once friends, but after one argument that spiralled out of control, they are now the lead commanders of a centuries long war that divides the entire country, with everyone either being on Bone's or Flesh's side of the war. This centuries long war is then only able to be stopped through time travel hijinks, a child soldier, plus a separate third party who wants to take over the world.

After the third party is defeated, the truce between the two is maintained, and they work to build back their friendship once more. However, a wrench is thrown in this plan when they both wind up deciding that the other was right all along in their original argument. They argue once more about this but, thankfully, instead of starting another war, they both go sulk on their own. With Bone going off to the mountains and Flesh disappearing overseas. All of their friends are very concerned about their whereabouts and their relationship, and through some intervention (and the two getting the shit beat out of them), they promise to make up and resolve their issues once and for all.

On occasion, I may pop back in here to drop a random doodle or two, simply because this has become my Yo-Kai Watch Art Blog™ (so you all can still drop requests if you think of them down the line, though they will likely take a while to be fulfilled). I may also revisit this blog if I polish up that rough idea I had of a Jibanyan clone tournament (I've counted over 170 Jibanyan clones now, if anyone was curious). Aside from those instances, however, this blog will largely remain dormant from here on out. A relic of this past year.

Will it ever fully revive? Ehh. Impossible to tell right now. I don't want to rule it out completely, but it's not looking very likely. Making a drawing every day, no matter how shitty each was, became a stressful chore at some point. I'd rather not put that on myself a second time.

That said, thank you all for your support and interest this past year. It's been long, it's been a journey, but I'm glad I saw this undertaking through. These were indeed shitty yokai watch drawings posted every day (more or less).

One last bonus piece to wish goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new. Thank you again, everyone.

🇺🇸: The following things I would do in the SAMURAI RABBIT series if I were the one writing it.

● WHEN THE STORY TAKES PLACE - when I watched it for the first time I was quite confused about when the series was set. From what was said in the series, it takes place A THOUSAND YEARS after the time when Miyamoto Usagi was alive, and from what I know he was based on a real samurai called Miyamoto Musashi who lived from 1584 to 1645 at the age of 61. So this means that the series would take place more or less in 2645. (Wow, it makes sense that technology is so great, Japan must have already dominated the world at that point!) So, at the height of my boredom, I thought about keeping it more or less at that time and finding a reason why there are shuguns, samurai and ninjas walking around, what could have happened in terms of making Japan return to its old traditions and such?

●KEEP THE ORIGINAL STYLE - You can judge me, but I liked the style of mixing old Japan with something more modern, it was visually readable to me. (Cries Boruto!) I'm even studying the style of clothes and designs of the characters in the series just for that reason, I really loved the style they chose. But since I should change something, I would say that some clothes would be like Kimonos imitating clothes from our current daily lives, or even the opposite of clothes we see today imitating classic Japanese clothes, depending on this it would become a new style with a really cool name.

●DESCENDANCE - I think it would be cooler in the series for Yuichi not to know that he is a descendant of Myamoto Usagi for now, but rather thinking that he is perhaps Kenichi's and even having a different coat of arms on his clothes reflecting the lack of knowledge of his kinship. The poor guy would only know the truth when he came into contact with the Ki stone and he wouldn't know if he should be happy to be a descendant of his hero or confused because for many generations this hadn't been revealed. So he would have to go after the truth somehow, although the only witnesses (the Yokais) are not so reliable because they see Myamoto differently. (This could be a loophole for an item that Myamoto had, which was a lock of Mariko's hair that he kept as a souvenir) so for now this truth couldn't be public so as not to cause chaos or something.

●THE YOKAIS- This one is going to be difficult, I actually thought it was cool in a way that the Yokais were just misunderstood beings that just wanted to live in peace, but there could also be some that just want chaos and bother the residents of Neo Edo (just like in some legends) so we would have some antagonists for now and we could choose one to be the one that gives the most work to our aspiring Hero.

●YUICHI USAGI- yeah, although I like his duality of being cocky and a little insecure inside, I think he could have more layers of personality. (For now I see him as a Sonic Silver in terms of personality) so I thought he would take some traits from Kenichi and even Yukichi, being a protagonist who is partially short-tempered when it comes to competitions and tournaments, wanting to have his name on something, being partially deluded about what life is like in a big city or with people of a certain level of power or fame and even looking a lot for a worthy rival to surpass him and show his potential. He would certainly be a formidable warrior and competitor if he knows how to balance his temperament and ambitions.

🇧🇷: As seguintes coisas que eu faria na série de SAMURAI RABBIT caso fosse eu que escrevesse.

● QUANDO SE PASSA A HISTÓRIA- quando assisti pela primeira vez eu fiquei bastante confusa sobre em que época era série se passava. Pelo que foi dito na série, se passa MIL ANOS após a época em que Miyamoto Usagi era vivo, e pelo que sei ele foi baseado em uma samurai real chamar o Miyamoto Musashi que viveu de 1584 a 1645 com 61 anos. Logo isso quer dizer que a série se passaria mais ou menos em 2645. (Caramba faz sentido a tecnologia ser tanta, o Japão já deve ter dominado o mundo nesse ponto!) Então eu no auge do meu tédio pensei em manter mais ou menos nessa época e achar um motivo do porquê tá tendo shuguns, samurais e ninjas andando por aí, oque poderia ter acontecido no nível de fazer o Japão voltar as antigas tradições e tals?

●MANTER O ESTILO ORIGINAL- Podem me julgar, mas eu gostei do estilo de misturar o Japão antigo com algo mais moderno, ficou algo visualmente lendo pra mim. (Chora Boruto!) Eu até estou estudando um pouco o estilo de roupas e dos designs dos personagens da série só por isso, eu amei demais o estilo que escolheram. Mas como eu devo mudar algo eu então diria que algumas roupas seriam tipo Kimonos imitando roupas do nosso cotidiano atual, ou até o contrário de roupas que vemos hoje imitando as roupas clássicas do Japão, dependendo isso viraria um novo estilo com um nome bem bacana.

●A DESCENDÊNCIA- acho que seria mas legal na série o Yuichi não saber que é descendente do Myamoto Usagi por enquanto, e sim pensando ser talvez do Kenichi e até tendo um brasão diferente na roupa refletindo a desconhecimento de seu parentesco. O coitado só iria saber a verdade quando entrasse em contato com a pedra de Ki e ele não saberia se deveria está feliz por ser decendente do seu herói ou confuso por durante muitas gerações isso não ter sido revelado. Então ele teria que ir atrás da verdade de alguma forma, embora as únicas testemunhas (os Yokais) não serem tão confiáveis por verem o Myamoto de forma diferente. (Isso poderia ser uma brecha para um item que o Myamoto tinha que era uma mercha de cabelo da Mariko que ele guardava como lembrança) então por enquanto essa verdade não poderia ser pública para não causar caos ou algo assim.

●OS YOKAIS- Esse vai ser difícil, eu até que achei legal de certa forma os Yokais serem apenas seres incompreendidos que só queriam viver em paz, mas também poderia ter alguns que só querem o caos e incomodar os moradores de Neo Edo (assim como em algumas lendas) então teríamos por enquanto alguns antagonistas e poderiamos eleger um para ser o que mais vai dá trabalho para nosso aspirante a Herói.

●YUICHI USAGI- pois é, embora eu goste da dualidade dele de ser convencido e por dentro um pouco inseguro, eu acho que ele poderia ter mais camadas de personalidade. (Por agora eu o vejo como um Silver de sonic no quesito de personalidade) então pensei nele puxar alguns traços do Kenichi e até do Yukichi, sendo um protagonista parcialmente pavio curto quando o assunto é competições e torneios, almejar ter seu nome em algo, ser parcialmente iludido sobre como é a vida em uma cidade grande ou com pessoas de certo nível de poder ou fama e até procurar muito por um rival a altura para supera-lo e mostrar seu potencial. Certamente ele seria um guerreiro e competidor formidável se ele souber equilibrar seu temperamento e ambições.

Timber Hearth:

You know this track plays every time the sun comes up on Timber Hearth? That is the best time for a song to start playing I swear. When I first played this game it took me a while to leave and hearing this song start playing over and over was amazing to me, I also had heard this song before I played the game I think and it alone is making me want to like forget everything I know about the game and play it again. Exploring Timber Hearth for the first time was a wonderful experience.

Giant monster tamer megathread

Decided for the sake of education and my own neurodiversity to make a post including every video game series or stand alone title I know of that focuses on creature capturing competitions that isn't Pokemon.

One big exception: the game has to be a reasonably playable state. So no games that are effectively or literally lost media (like Micromon) or games that only playable state is currently a short demo (like Bestieball). With that in mind here we go:

Digimon

This one is pretty obvious. While more of a multimedia franchise it has tons of games to its IP. The one that probably would appeal most to Pokenerds is Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its sequel as they're turned based RPGs with a monster capture mechanic.

Monster Rancher

Another one I think a lot of folks have heard about or least millennials would remember. I haven't personally played any of these titles myself but from what I gather they're raising sims with tournament combat. For a while their availability was mostly limited to emulation but Monster Rancher 1 and 2 have been ported to modern systems like the Switch.

Yo-kai Watch

A mid 2010s franchise that had a whole lot of initial success in Japan. Its an RPG series that doesn't take itself very seriously with cute and goofy monster design based on the Japanese folklore creatures called... well yokai. Has real time combat instead of turn based and more luck based capturing mechanics than Pokemon.

Palworld

Brand new game that's only in its alpha release as of now. Its effectively a parody of Pokemon where you're stuck trying to survive in the wilderness so you must build a base and farm resources to survive. Game did have some initial controversy due to some of its designs stepping a little TOO close to being outright ripoffs of existing designs. Also you can capture and enslave humans which may not vibe with some folks.

Temtem

Basically Pokemon meets a MMO lite. The game can be played mostly as single player campaign but does unfortunately still require a constant internet connection. Battles are turned based but 2 versus 2.

Shin Megami Tensei

What could be consider the original monster tamer game. The series is aimed at a somewhat older audience and the plots tend to be more philosophical then like "gotta be the best *insert title here* ever". Focuses a lot on fusing monsters as well as trying to convince them to join you. You actually battle alongside your monsters.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Monster Capturing mechanics do exist in the mainline DQ games as well (at least since DQ5 I think?) but its these games have them as the main gameplay. Much like SMT it focuses on fusing monsters as one of the main ways to expand your library off available species.

Nexomon

Franchise that started its life as a mobile game but has since gotten ports to other systems. Its very similar to Pokemon in terms of creature designs and combat but the worldbuilding is quite different as is its tone being a lot more comedic.

Coromon

Indie game with visuals similar to Pokemon Black and White. Its story was originally kinda so-so and its ending pretty abrupt but its since gotten a free patch that smoothed that out quite a bit. Also has a sorta unique "shiny" system where alternate colors are associated with higher potential which can actually be altered once. Also has a built in randomizer and "nuzlocke" mode.

Cassette Beasts

A pretty recent indie game. Unlike all the others you don't capture or hatch monsters but rather record them to transform into them yourself. Battles are always between you and a companion which there are multiple to befriend throughout your journey (including a dog!). Has some really interesting quirks with its type chart that adds a lot of extra depth. Will soon be releasing a mutiplayer update for anyone that's into that kind of thing.

Monster Crown

A game with visual based on the Gameboy era. It has some pretty fascinating breeding mechanics and a somewhat darker tone than Pokemon. WARNING: DO NOT GET THE SWITCH PORT! For whatever reason its especially glitchy and I have genuinely gotten entire save files ruined by game breaking bugs (such as my player character getting stuck in walls or clipping out of a bounds). As far as I'm aware the PC version is not nearly as much as a mess though.

Monster Sanctuary

Monster collecting meets metroidvania. Has a really fun skill tree type move learning system that allows for quite a bit of strategy. Also the monster designs are way less Pokemon and more inspired by traditional roleplay monsters (so there's like Goblins and stuff). My only gripe with the game is how you get monsters involves getting specific scores in battle which makes getting 1 of each monster way more tedious than it needed to be.

Fossil Fighters

Franchise is maybe dead since there hasn't been a new entry in it since the 3DS but its still easy enough to these games. Anyway this series involve reviving dinosaurs (and some other ancient animals) into new lifeforms called vivosaur and using them in 3 on 3 combat. Vivosaurs are obtained with a fossil digging minigame which is kinda neat.

Spectrobes

Another franchise that's been pretty dead for a while (it last entry was on the Wii). Spectrobes has a more sci fi like setting with its monsters being aliens you revive from fossils. Combat is real time and you participate alongside a couple of your monsters. I'm btw describing only the first game because I haven't played either sequel!

Evocreo

Mobile only monster game with a style similar to Pokemon Black and White not unlike Coromon mentioned above. Has a lot of focus on split path evolution. The devs are apparently going to release a sequel soon but its been in development hell for years so I'll come back and edit this if that actually happens.

Monster Hunter Stories

I have not played nor watched gameplay of this one so I can't really describe it that deeply all I know is its a spinoff of Monster Hunter involving befriending and using the titular monsters in combat.

Telefang

Its sad this game series is most famous for being badly translated and repackaged as a Pokemon game. Anyway these are Japanese only titles though fan translations exist. The gimmick of this game is that you call monsters up on your cellphone to get them over to participate in combat. This series this sprout out when cellphones were consider newfangled and hip so it makes sense.

Anode Heart

Pretty sure this one is PC only. Takes some inspiration from the Digimon World games and is semi open world. Sadly this one I don't know much about outside of that though it does have a free demo on Steam for anyone that wants to try it for themselves.

Ooblets

Extremely wholesome monster catching and farming game. Battles are actually dancing competitions instead of violent confrontations and monsters are recruited simply by beating them in a fight. Thing is monsters will only fight you if you offer them their favourite food so that's where strategy comes in.

Moonstone Island

I know very little about this one except its also a monster catching and farming game. I've heard that its really good though and I believe its PC only right now but has a planned Switch port.

Timenet

Probably the most obscure ass monster tamer on this entire list. This is a Japanese exclusive set of Gameboy games featuring very cute monster designs... and Hello Kitty. Yes Sanrio made a monster tamer back in the late 90s. I only learned this even existed after scrolling down a comment section on a random YouTube video.

Abomi Nation

I'm mostly excluding roguelike games due to most having nothing but battles an 0 plot but this one does actually has a story! You play as the actual monster as you make your way through somewhat randomly generated maps with lots of other randomized elements. The game allows for a lot of customization including turning off permadeath if you're not a fan of that. The visual style is a bit crude but its still a pretty cute game.

Jade Concoon

Another somewhat obscure entry but at least this one got an English release. Anyway its an old RPG for the PSX with monster capturing and a very fascinating monster fusing mechanic that uses an algorithm to determine the appearance of the fusion. The player character can also participate in battle and the plot is very complex. The game also has a sequel on the PS2 but I know even less about that one.

Robopon

Now if you thought Palworld was bordering on some copyright infringement this game is basically nothing but "Pokemon but the designs are robots". Still worth bringing up I think!

Ni No Kuni

Not sure how I got to mentioning several obscure titles and somehow didn't mention something that really isn't. Ni No Kuni is real time battles between you and 2 party members. You can both battle as the actual human characters or switch into a monster. Wrath of the White Witch's visual style in particular is very whimsical and even has some animated cutscene done by Studio Ghibli. I haven't played any other game in the franchise.

Siralim

I haven't played any entry in this series yet (there's apparently 4 games + a spinoff) but from reading up on the most recent entry these are basically procedurally generated dungeon crawlers with an insane level of depth. The story is apparently not that great but the games themselves apparently also make fun of it so it seems its an intentional dev choice. Battles are 6 on 6 and there's over 1000 monsters to collect.

Disc Creatures

A monster tamer with a visual style similar to the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. It has 3 on 3 combat. Impressively I'm pretty sure it was developed by just one person in the RPG Maker engine (I'm honestly surprised this is the first indie game made with ya know... an engine meant for turned based RPGs).

Monster Harvest

A Dungeon crawler mixed with farming. Its a bit shorter than anything else I've mentioned here and its a bit glitchy but its a cute little game worth picking up on sale at the least. Notably also only about a 1/3 of the monster in the game are combative with the rest being either used for farming resources or as mounts.

Loomian Legacy

A Roblox monster tamer.... yes there's 2 of those in this (I could even have added 3 but I think one is in still a pretty early state). Pretty sure this started as a Pokemon fangame and become its own thing later. It has your typical 1 on 1 turn based combat and all that. I think its free to play and there's like several hours of content on it so maybe worth a gander.

Pretty sure this is the same basic deal as Loomian (Roblox game, started as a Pokemon fan game, etc etc) though its has its own world building and creature designs since I'm pretty sure its made by a completely different team.

So yeah that's all of them I can think of right now. If I learn of others and/or there's new releases I may expand this.

PS: There is almost certainly numerous typoes in this. This post is way longer than anything else I've ever made on Tumblr so I can't be arse to fix them you're just going to have to deal!

My take on the interview advertised on the cover of @tangledinink 's 5kdtiys

I had an opportunity to sit down with Battle Nexus reigning champs, Gemini. Undefeated for the past 4 years, with easily over a thousand victories under their belt, Gemini are the twin kappa sons of Big Mama herself.

We start the interview with all of the usual niceties, and then I get down to brass tacks

Hidden City Beat: So, to make this easier for our readers, is there something I can call each of you as I'm writing up this interview?

Gemini: Blue and Purple respectively is fine.

HCB: Like the colors you wear in the arena?

Purple: gives me a flat stare

Blue: Yes, exactly! He chuckles

HCB: So can we assume that blue and purple are your favorite colors?

B: Yep, that's why we always wear them. That, and, well, we like to match. He winks

HCB: I chuckle politely

HCB: So, I gotta ask, the question everyone wants to know: how does one become a Battle Nexus Champion?

P: looks at me evenly Practice and hard work

B: Blue smirks at me charmingly Good genetics, and good looks don't hurt either. He leans back coyly, hands behind his head and one eye half closed

HCB: And of course, I gotta ask this one for all of the love-sick fellas and ladies at home: anyone special in your life? Girlfriend? Boyfriend? Other?

P: gives me a blank flat stare

B: chuckles nonchalantly Nah, my bro and I are too busy focused on being the most badass yokai in the Hidden City. Besides, he looks over to Purple affectionately We're all the other needs.

P: his face softens a little and he nods confirmation

B: looks back to me with a sly grin Though, I wouldn't say no to some no strings attached fun every now and again.

HCB:Do you mind if I ask- what is your sex life like? Do you prefer the men or the ladies….?

B: winks at me playfully A true gentleman doesn't kiss and tell, but I will say this: I've never been great at making decisions.

HCB: So does that mean you swing both ways?

B: winks playfully with a finger on his lips

HCB: I chuckle Alright, I'll leave that line of questioning alone.

HCB: My next question is for Purple specifically.

HCB: Sometimes you have some kind of armor. What's that about?

Blue stiffens momentarily but Purple sits up straighter and looks excitedly in my direction.

P: You'd like to know about my battle shell?

HCB: I incline my head in his direction Is that what it's called?

P: Purple fists his hands in his lap, but his eyes are dancing with delight. Yes! The Battle Shell, current version 3.2.0 is a lightweight, technologically advanced body armor of my own design.

HCB: You made it yourself?

Purple beams while Blue looks faintly bored of this conversation

P: Yes! Everything from the design to the fabrication of the materials and assembly was done by yours truly. Purple puts a hand on his chest proudly

HCB: You said it is technologically advanced. Would you care to elaborate?

P: I thought you'd never ask! I used an enchanted titanium alloy to make it as durable and lightweight as possible, not to mention easy to clean blood off, of course.

HCB: I chuckle Of course! Does it have any special little features or goodies?

P:It has a lot of features! For example, I can use it to-

He's interrupted by his brother yawning loudly

B: Yeah, yeah, we get it Purple, you're a world class super genius, yada yada yada. Save some surprises for the ring, hmm?

P: Purple looks faintly annoyed but nods Right!

B: winks slyly If your readers want to know more about Purple's battleshell, they'll have to come watch us in the Arena!

HCB: Oh, speaking of, when is your next match?

B: Two days from now, on Tuesday September 5th, we open the day's entertainment with an exhibition match, then there is a mini tournament, the winners of whom we'll fight at the end of the day!

HCB: You heard it here, folks! Make sure to grab your tickets now, if you haven't already because I hear seats are going fast!

B: winks slyly I might even choose someone from the audience to celebrate our victory with afterwards…

HCB: You're so sure you'll win?

P: Purple snorts Please. As if anyone competing in the upcoming tournament stands a chance against us.

HCB: Well, I suppose we all will have to wait and see, though with your phenomenal record, I don't doubt it.

B: Unbroken record Blue gently corrects me

HCB: I chuckle good naturedly Of course, my mistake. Good luck out there, not that you two need it.

They both shake my hands and take their leave
