Echo and Walter had us up at 6:30am howling. Echo freaking LOVES to howl. Any excuse. No excuse. I swear my wolf killer is part wolf herself. Well, since the sled is out of commission we’re back to the 2km hike to the truck in the mornings and home after work for now… and of course the first morning we were following these suckers nearly the entire way. Never a dull moment. #wolf #wildlife #animaltracks #tracking #winter #yukon #yukonterritory #dawsoncity #adventure #homesteadlife #livingthedream (at Dawson, Yukon Territory) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpRoyHEOJx3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Man” - August 2023 The Visitor’s Center in Whitehorse includes a variety of local indigenous art. One of those pieces is “Man” by Keith Wolfe Smarch. The human figure is depicted as part of all creation and all creation is a part of him. It is an interesting world view shared by many of the indigenous peoples of the American continents. MWM

Books From a Non-Human Perspective
I've seen discussions on books going around the alterhuman community, and it caused me to recall some of my own favorite books from a non-human perspective. The most memorable of these were from a non-human perspective, and focused more on nonhuman existence, than supernatural or fantastical elements.
I've noticed that I tend towards books that are more realistic- not to say that I only read realistic books, but many of the stories I like are focused on the animal's point of view, aren't really shapeshifting focused, and are more focused on being "practically nonhuman". Like, you'll see what I mean if you check out the books 😉
(I've added descriptions and images from the books to the post, all credit goes to Google/Amazon.)
Child of the Wolves - Elizabeth Hall
Granite, a Siberian husky puppy, is all alone in the Alaskan forest after escaping from his kennel. Each moment of his life is threatened until Snowdrift, a great white wolf, welcomes him into a wolf pack. But Granite must earn his place among the wolf tribe by facing vicious attacks from the other wolves, the human wolf hunters, and the constant challenges of the frozen forest.
Tumblr media
Lexi's Tale - Johanna Hurwitz
Can Lexi, the street-smart squirrel and his friend PeeWee, a well-read guinea pig, make a difference in the life of a man living hungry and friendless in Central Park?
Tumblr media
The Werewolf Club and the Magic Pretzel (series) - Daniel and Jill Pinkwater
Everyone knows people turn into werewolves if they are bitten by a werewolf, but did you know you can turn into a werewolf by:
1.Thinking about werewolves
2.Reading a book like this one
3.For no reason at all
Norman Gnormal didn’t know this until someone signed him up for the Werewolf Club at school. Raised as a puppy (he’s pretty sure his parents wanted a dog but got him instead), he never quite fit in with most kids at school, who don’t growl at people or dig holes in the lawn. But in the Werewolf Club he finds home with other kids who like running on all fours and howling at the moon.
When the club learns that their teacher has been cursed, the only way to cure him is with Alexander the Great’s magic pretzel. But will the club be able to find the pretzel? And can Norman, the only non-werewolf in the club, keep up?
Lionboy (series) - Zizou Corder
When his parents are kidnapped, what's ten-year-old Charlie Ashanti to do? Rescue them, that's what! He doesn't know who has taken his parents, or why. But he does know that one special talent will aid him on his journey--his amazing ability to speak Cat. Charlie calls on his clever feline friends--from stray city cats to magnificent caged lions--for help. With them by his side, Charlie uses wit and courage to try to find his parents before it's too late.

The Call of the Wild - Jack London
The Call of the Wild is a novel by Jack London published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush—a period when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in the Santa Clara valley of California as the story opens.
Stolen from his home and sold into the brutal existence of an Alaskan sled dog, he reverts to atavistic traits. Buck is forced to adjust to, and survive, cruel treatments and fight to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and lessons he learns, to emerge as a leader in the wild. London lived for most of a year in the Yukon collecting material for the book.
The story was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903; a month later it was released in book form. The novel’s great popularity and success made a reputation for London. Much of its appeal derives from the simplicity with which London presents the themes in an almost mythical form. As early as 1908 the story was adapted to film and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations.
Tumblr media
White Fang- Jack London
White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876–1916) — and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption.
Return of the Wolf - Dorothy Hinshaw Patent
Clarion author Dorothy Hinshaw Patent is well known and highly respected for her natural history books. "Return of the Wolf," her first work of fiction, draws on her extensive knowledge of wolf behavior, based on first-hand observation. In the course of a year, Sedra, a young female wolf, establishes her own territory, finds a mate, and begins a new wolf pack. Quick-paced, dramatic, and told from the wolf's point of view, this story contains fascinating details of wolves' life in the wild: their communication, the birth and training of pups, and the pack's strategies for hunting and survival.
Tumblr media
Frightful's Mountain - Jean Craighead George
Sam Gribley has been told that it is illegal to harbor an endangered bird, so when his beloved falcon, Frightful, comes home, he has to let her go. But Frightful doesn’t know how to live alone in the wild. She can’t feed herself, mate, brood chicks, or migrate. Frightful struggles to survive and learns to enjoy her new freedom. But she feels a bond with Sam that can never be broken, and more than anything else, she wants to return to him.
Tumblr media
Runt - Marion Dane Bauer
DEEP IN THE Minnesota forest, where only the strong survive, four regular-sized pups—Leader, Sniffer, Runner, and Thinker—are pushed into the world. Then one last, very small pup is born into the wolf pack. He is called Runt.
From the very start, Runt struggles in the harsh wild world of the wolves. He tries learning along with his brothers and sisters, but makes serious mistakes. It’s hard pleasing his father, King, and the other wolves. If only Runt could prove himself to his powerful father and family. . . .
Tumblr media
The Puppy Sister - S. E. Hilton
Nick and his parents get more than they bargained for when their newly adopted puppy, Aleasha, decides she'll have more fun with her new "family" if she becomes human, too. So begins a laugh-out-loud adventure told from Aleasha's point of view, about her transformation from puppy to girl.
Tumblr media
Alien in a Bottle - Kathy Mackel
If Dinn Tauro hadn't shot Tagg Orion off the Inter-Dimensional Wheel, Tagg and his sidekick, Squeeto, would never have crashed on that nowhere planet called Earth. And Sean Winger would never have found the two extraterrestrials in a bottle on the beach.
Without the aliens Sean wouldn't have a hope of entering a glass sculpture in the Hollis Art Fair -- and winning a scholarship. That's all Sean really wants in this world. Sean just needs two things -- glass and fire. He knows his parents won't help. So when Tagg offers Sean three wishes in exchange for protecting him from Dinn Tauro, how can Sean refuse?
Could two extraterrestrials really hold the answers to Sean's yearnings? Or are they only taking him on an extraterrestrial ride?
Tumblr media
We3 (comic) - Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly
Writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely deliver the emotional journey of WE3 - three house pets weaponized for lethal combat by the government - as they search for "home" and ward off the shadowy agency that created them.
With nervous systems amplified to match their terrifying mechanical exoskeletons, the members of Animal Weapon 3 (WE3) have the firepower of a battalion between them. But they are just the program's prototypes, and now that their testing is complete, they're slated to be permanently "decommissioned," causing them to seize their one chance to make a desperate run for freedom. Relentlessly pursued by their makers, the WE3 team must navigate a frightening and confusing world where their instincts and heightened abilities make them as much a threat as those hunting them - but a world, nonetheless, in which somewhere there is something called "home."

Stuff from the comics I like and if they were canon to the inky mystery I would explode from joy part 2
Bacon soup has Bendy's face on it, it's really funny really, just having the soup you like the most have your own face on it for no real reason.
Alice is seen float a lot, it's really fun.
Boris growls.
Alice halo becomes smaller and her horns gets longer whenever she gets mad, along with fire.
Bendy just doesn't dress up for Halloween because he's a demon, but if he has to scare Boris, he gets a ghost costume (implying that Boris is not scared of bendy. At all. Which is very cute.) < from the cartoons
Charley just hates bendy lmao
love how whenever something happens, it has to be Bendy's fault. he's just a troublemaker, but his friends are ready to forgive him anytime.
Boris says "good golly gosh" a lot, actually.
"we're the first people to land in the moon, and it's YOUR FAULT!" love this from Alice actually.
Also in the bendy universe apparently the moon's made of cheese and there are aliens living there. Or whatever those turkeys were.
Alice is never up Bendy's bullshit.
according to Alice, bendy needs to get better at his "people's skills"
Bendy just has lots of pranks things, like the little joy buzzer (the thing where you shake the hand of someone and the someone gets shocked n stuff)
Also bendy has a pet fish. (Love how when he turned bubbles into a monster fish bendy still called him bubbles, like. Hey guys check my giant pet monster!!! His name his bubbles!!!)
bendy is just..not evil, even when he has literally something that can give him everything he wants (the pitchfork, even though in the end it was a scam) he just says "I shouldn't keep this to myself, but have everyone else have it too!!!" And immediately goes to give his friends their wishes.
Like, even if he calls Boris "his servant" he just treats him way too good.
also "bubbles you destroyed the whole town! Good work of course, but that's where I live!!" Awesome.
Despite bendy being a demon (demons are often described as filthy and greedy) he enjoys being clean.
Tumblr media
Best description of bendy I saw "mischievous selfish bitch who steals pies from old ladies" (because in the comics he does steal pies. From one specific lady too.)
The first thing bendy does when the pitchfork turns out to be a curse casting pitchfork is say "oh no! Alice and Boris!" He truly cares man.
"think bendy! Put your devilshness to good use!!"
Alice openly says to bendy "bendy I will beat your ass once this is over", icon.
"there's only one devil who can menace alice and Boris and that's me!" Like when the older sibling says "only I can bully my younger sibling" beautiful. I want this canon in inky mystery.
Alice dosen't even question why bendy pet fish is now a giant flying monster, meaning he pulls out shit like this everyday.
"to think that dosen't recognize all the good naps we had together!" Boris has a favorite spot to sleep and it's that specific tree. (The dancing evil tree.)
BENDY SAVING BUBBLES WHEN HE FALLS😭🙏
bendy: "i've learned my lesson!!" Does the same mistake again.
Alice is really just a good independent woman, I love her. She's smart and she got charm.
I love how Alice can fool bendy and Boris pretty easily, she's the smart one of the group.
All of the stories with bendy, Boris and Alice being like characters like in devil's treasure, yukon bendy and such it makes me think they dress up and play pretend.
Bendy saying "I love that guy" to Charley like😭🙏 this man has no enemies !!!
"we've been here for fifteen minutes!! Time to go home." Boris is still a mood. (He's talking about working, btw.)
Bendy is casually a conductor. (Even more reasons why he loves trains, AND HE PLAYS WITH A TOY TRAIN IN THE GAME.)
Bendy does not like potato corn.
Boris gets offended if he gets called a dog, he will specifically tell you he is a WOLF, not a dog!
"boo bendy!! We love you Alice!!!" LMAOO
"see people of new York!" Either he went to New York to perform, or sillyvision is around there.
Also apparently bendy can lift things and make 'em float. He lifted Alice in the air and let her float around for a magic trick (or it was Alice floating for him but I doubt, since later he spins her and she doesn't like that.)
"whoops! That was my good tomato" 😭🙏 I LOVE THE BACKGROUND CHARACTERS
Let me appreciate the pizza guy saying "another, signore?" Which translate to "another, sir?"
Bendy can cook! Or at least, he can make chili.
Bendy does his bath with his rubber duck!!
Boris and Alice casually fishing where it says "no fishing"
They also just, casually look at bendy sleeping in his washtub being pulled away by the water.
Edgar is such a cutie patooie. He even asks politely "just don't tell the gang I saved you btw, thanks."

out of time man — True Detective (TV 2014)
Submission is a matter of handling someone. Rust hates to drive but he’s going to need something to do with his hands, with his eyes, some lost hall of memory to fall back into as Marty says, “Gay rodeo,” twitchy in the passenger seat, and, “What d’ya make of that, huh?”
— October 2000, Rust and Marty catch a case that has two worlds colliding.
Chapter 8: Man of Honor
Marty always liked Crash. Likes to think of him still, Rust can see it in his eyes, despite the way Crash’s animal savagery — clawing, feral, cornered, always used to remind himself of the mangy Yukon wolf once got shut in Travis’s outhouse — frightens him too. So it gets you off, Rust could say, damage and damaging, it gets you off. Marty’s face so very close to his own.

Do ypu have HR with the hero having this animalistic MINE MINE MINEEEE!!! I know all of them have them but there are some taking it to the next level
Weeeellll lol not all of them tbh. Because we are surrounded by pearl clutchers as of late.......
ANYWAY.
I'm obviously relistening to Seduce Me at Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas, her most underrated banger imo, and when Kev finally gets with the program and sneaks into Win's bedroom all he does is cover her mouth with his hand and go "YOU'RE MINE" and she realizes it is THE FUCK. ON. And then he rails her for like 48 hours in his little fuck cottage, yay!
The Bride by Julie Garwood is the quintessentially MINE MINE MINE romance novel. Medieval border marriage book. Alec Kincaid literally drags Jamie up to a window so his people can look at her, and when someone asks him in Gaelic "what do we call her?" He goes "YOU CALL HER MINE". (He does not realize that Jamie also speaks Gaelic, which is embarrassing for him, but also beneficial because she's like "OH".)
The Dragon and The Pearl by Jeannie Lin... I forget how much the hero says "mine", but he does tattoo the heroine with his symbol (consensually!) and it's soooooo possessive and erotic and emotional. And he's a villainous hero, so he's very like "YOU BELONG TO ME NOW"
Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale has a very alpha hero who suffers a stroke at the beginning of the book. The heroine helps him as he recovers (after some big asylum trauma) and he's always calling her like "my maddgirly" (her name is Maddy) and he's SUPER territorial over her and I love it.
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale is also a very "MINE" romance, but it's mutual because Allegreto is a horrible villainous alpha who happens to like it when Elena gets rough in bed. However, he also gets his "MUAHAHAHAHAHA YOU'RE ALL MINE NOW" moment. Allegreto is crazy. *Obligatory Shadowheart's First Sex Scene is Noncon Warning*
The Wolf and The Wildflower by Stacy Reid! Wolf Duke is VERY possessive. Because he spent years in the Yukon living with wolves. (Really.) (He sniffs her crotch a lot.) (Shouldn't work but it sure does.)
Stephanie Laurens writes super possessive heroes because they have THE CONQUEROR'S BLOOD and are very alpha as a result. Scandal's Bride is my favorite I've read of hers thus far *obligatory "she drugs him for the first encounter" note* and Richard, lunatic of my heart, literally refers to Catriona as his snack (which he must have every morning or he will be very annoyed, and then he needs like a follow up snack thrice more throughout the day). But like. EVERY Cynster hero is a mine mine mine guy.
Elizabeth Hoyt knows how to write a mine mine mine. The Leopard Prince is an underrated one imo, because like Seduce Me at Sunrise it's one where the hero almost forces himself to give her up but at the last minute he's like "OH NO NO NOOOOOOOOO" and snaps and like, fucks her until she's screaming within earshot of her brothers and the guy who wanted to marry her.
Duke of Midnight proooobably has her most possessive hero, Everyone's (My) Favorite Douchecanoe Maximus Batten. I don't know that there are many romance heroes who get quite as MINE as Maximus fucking Artemis while talking about how he's gonna keep her trapped in like a special hunting lodge and kill elk for her and feed her the tastiest morsels, and it's honestly a real "oh girl it's like that huh" moment because she's a vERY rational woman and she's like "yeah tell me more about it keep going" lmao. Some of my favorite deranged dirty talk of all time.
Jennifer Ashley's Mackenzie brothers are super possessive. Like, even the "oh ho we have a fun time" ones (Mac from Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage and Cameron from The Many Sins of Lord Cameron") are still very "ALRIGHT NOW. CALM TF DOWN" if someone looks at their wives for too long lol. Ian (The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie) literally needs Beth around to feel complete and Hart from The Duke's Perfect Wife, another "Everyone Else Thinks He's Too Much But Iiiiiiiiiii Like 'Im" hero is sooooo possessive of Eleanor. Wasn't even in his own book yet and he still made time to put money down her bodice to remind her that DADDY STILL HAS CASH.
Monica McCarty's Highland Guard series is basically entire made up of "mine mine mine" heroes lol. The Chief has a MAJOR alpha hero. The Recruit is big on it too, especially since she tries to keep her accidental pregnancy from him and he feels the baby bump by accident and goes all *INFANT. DETECTED.* and is like "NO BABY OF MINE IS GONNA BE A BASTARD!!!!"
Though it's a funny moment, I still think the hero of Tessa Dare's Any Duchess Will Do making the heroine recite his courtesy titles while he bends her over his desk is both hilarious and ridic dumb possessive hot.
The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham has a very consciously dominant, "whose pussy is this?" type hero, which we love to see.
Joanna Shupe has very possessive heroes--Preston from The Bride Goes Rogue comes to mind, especially when mY BOY the Duke of Lockwood is like, vaguely making friends with Katherine, because Lockwood is so hot that every other hero in the series is like "You wouldn't fuck him??? OH PLEASE DON'T LIE TO ME I WOULD FUCK HIM" and gets very jealous lmao. Fwiw, Lockwood is possessive of Nellie in The Duke Gets Even. He's always like "I'm keeping you" and biting her tits to leave bruises and shit. Which is what Joanna Shupe is allowed to get away with in a trad historical in 2023 lmao.
Obviously. Derek Craven from Dreaming of You. McKenna from Again the Magic.
If you're up for something dark and angsty, A Rose at Midnight by Anne Stuart has a very intense YOU'RE MINE NOW YOU WENCH thing, but uhhh check your triggers. I loved it!

Buck’s (The Call of the Wild) and Balto’s wolf guide figures.
Buck’s wolf was his inner primal self while Balto’s wolf was his wolf heritage. The black wolf was portrayed as being knowledgeable, encouraging Buck to abandon his habits as a pampered house dog and learn to survive in the unforgiving Yukon. Balto’s white wolf is more graceful, showing him that his wolf heritage is nothing to be ashamed of.

Northern Lights: A Due South Novel
About a month ago, before discovering @ds30below, I started writing Northern Lights, a serialized fan novel, published on Wattpad [edit: and now also on AO3]. Northern Lights continues the story in 2024 when, thirty years after Benton Fraser went to Chicago, his daughter follows in his footsteps.
Constable Elizabeth Fraser thought she'd spend her whole career policing the Canadian north. As a third generation Mountie, she knows how to track suspects through wilderness, handle a dog sled team, and press a scarlet tunic in a log cabin, but only knows American cities from family stories. Every day she strives to live up to her family legacy, but too often falls short of her own expectations. Yet when her best friend turns up dead, the trail leads to Chicago, where her old-fashioned skills are as welcome as a spring blizzard.
The Chicago detective assigned to the case, an old friend's estranged son, wants nothing to do with Frasers or Mounties. To solve the case, she'll have to mend a broken family, adapt to a strange new place, while bringing her loyal wolf-dog and a dose of Yukon politeness, duty, and honour to the big city.
You can read the story on Wattpad here. I've posted five chapters so far, with new chapters publishing weekly. [edit: and on A03 here]
Thank you @flownwrong for running this fest!

DS FIC REC - Crossover Fic
I have decided that since it's Wednesday it is crossover day. Lets start with what I consider the OG crossover fandom for due South:
The Sentinel (1996 TV show)
Funny thing is I remember reading a decent number of due South/Sentinel crossovers back in the late 2000's but I can't seem to find them anymore and the ones I can find are more Sentinel focused then due South focused.
Mini Sentinel Primer: A sentinel is a person with heightened senses and high protective instinct. Because of their heightened senses there is a risk that they might get overwhelmed and lost in those senses and need a guide to ground them.
So many of Fraser's habits which are attributed in the show to him knowing survival skills (such as licking things and sniffing things to figure out clues) can be easily translated to Fraser being a sentinel that the crossovers were bound to happen.
I do have two fic recommendations:
The first recommendation doesn't really require any knowledge of the Sentinel TV show than what I provided above.
Imperfections: Chicago by Dasha
Summary: Fraser was a damn good cop. Well, an incredible cop, actually, and a sentinel besides. And Canada left him to be guided by a wolf and put him on statue duty outside the Chicago consulate rather then, oh, for example, treating him with a little respect and letting him solve crimes in the Yukon where he'd be really efficient.

The second recommendation would require more knowledge of the Sentinel TV show which if you don't already know a pretty good summary of it is here.
SVS-13: The Mountie Who Fell to Earth by Josephine Darcy
Summary:
While on an investigation, Jim and Blair stumble across a Chicago cop, a Mountie, his pet wolf and a murder. Eventually the gang is led on a wild ride across the Canadian wilderness in pursuit of a demented religious freak. Can Jim and Fraser save their partners before it's too late?
SVS is the Sentinel Virtual Season. I read it with no previous knowledge of SVS fics and still enjoyed.
