an amusing thing to me about the Yuri vs yaoi forever war fandom struggle discourse is that for the f/f fans mad about yaoi popularity and making lots of extremely funny (to me) Song-of-Roland-esque posts that make it sound like "we are going to WAR against the evil man-centering fujos terrorizing and colonizing our yuriship spaces!!!" Is that I never see the loudest trumpeters actually go to "war" or do any work organizing or strategizing to "win" their cause.
The only tactic they have is trying to do a "win hearts and minds by telling yaoi shippers they should feel Bad for Centering Men and being "dick-obsessed" (hmmm!) and "interrogate your kinks"-ass rhetoric (double hmmm!!!) which ok, let's take that at face value....that's a purely INTERNAL process. You're asking someone to sit down and Correct Their Thoughts and Soul, with hopefully ending towards the End Product of "After they've been Corrected, they will make More Content I Like, and the Big Number or AO3 stat will go up and surpass the Content I don't Like"
Which ok fine...but very hilariously ineffective, a very passive activism. Vague steps to take (be aware!!) It doesn't even really make or give people any steps to reach the supposed goal of Surpassing in Number for the Sake of the Number. The loudest ppl who seem to freak out whenever the stats number is down, I never see working to build connections of support and love for the people who make the stuff you want.
Like even framing as a matter of representation for real life women and wlw, we've had discussions for ages re: media industry how the conditions of ppl who create behind the scenes so that they have freedom of expression and control of their stories is essential to having "good representation." Even if the marginalized ppl in general end up making stuff that is maybe "gross" or "trashy" or Sexual in a Way You don't Like*, that support of the actual real creators and enthusiasts is what's important.
For fujos, I feel most of us are used to getting shit on so we don't really care what people say and will continue to toil in the posting mines make what we make, even if it's rare and gross so someone trying to simply make an Hearts and Minds "war" move is not very effective. We have our own work to do, the work (of play) is what makes things meaningful, bc if is done for its own sake. The best f/f fans and creators I've seen, the ones I see be lambasted for being "weird and gross" are the ones who are passionate and who commission and discuss and have relationships, don't need to bother with the Hearts and Mind because they are building castles and fortifications And making discoveries themselves, rather than worrying what other ppl think of them or if their ships or themselves are "approvable" or defined by a general public. The tactics that fujos use to boost and celebrate THEIR rarepairs etc are certainly not exclusive.
When I think Abt cool projects and esp stuff that has contributed to say, communities and celebration of media and creatives especially re: f/f fandom stuff, I think of stuff like Empty Movement and their massive decades-long archiving of utena materials, of people making zines and creative works around ships I wouldn't even consider until I see the cool ideas, or my friends who review and write and talk extensively about the novels and works they are reading both to reflect their tastes and raise interest. That builds foundations and connections between people . That is how you fight. That is how you wage your proper war...it does not have to be fruitless...
*I have maintained that if people REALLY wanted their numbers to go up they'd support the people making siscon and momdaughter stuff bc there's a sheer lack esp of the latter...a big part of yaoisms popularity is bc everyone loves Dadson, which imo is basically a very big fantasy even for heteros and pops up gratuitously in like every mainstream movie ever. Now that we are getting really mom generational trauma narratives it's time for momdaughter to shine. But unfortunately every time I check up on a false loud war trumpeter wondering where all the femslash is they're also recoiling with disgust about incest And agegap and other problematic tropes so like maybe they really don't care about the Number Going Up-just acceptability, and of things they personally can relate to? One can never know.

the kafus yuriship eked out a win against its enemy!
dude it was so close and they were losing at multiple points because most people haven't watched far enough into horizons (if anything at all) bc all the gay shit isn't dubbed yet in the US. and they were up against GAME CHARACTERS. i'm very proud of them somehow winning despite the odds being stacked against them. proves how good of a ship it is

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
Fran, Xanxus, Chrome, and ummmm Kyoko
Fran - I really like the world hunt doujinkas treatment of him as a very silly lad. I also strongly respect that in recent years, love of Fran has. hm. waned, a bit? Like we all still love him, but we're starting to realize that oh (points) that's a fucker.
Xanxus - honestly i respect anyone who tries to understand this character. I feel like I'm too baby to even go near Xanxus. That if I write or draw him, I'll get shot down by a thousand OOC comments.
Chrome - Thank you, yurishipers, for looking at my younger year's interpretation of Chrome as a lesbian dealing with compulsory heterosexuality and being like "yeah that makes sense" even in the face of her constant blushing around men---as she said herself, her face just does that.
Kyoko - Every person that gives Kyoko a better role than what she was given in canon is beloved by me. Of course, sometimes I don't like it when we interpret her as physically strong, because sometimes the fandom goes a bit too far? Like in a way where its all "oh yeah she'd be soo much better if she could drop kick people" aight but don't forget her emotional power too!!!!!

okay okay thinking more seriously in The Failure Of Normalising Yurishipping In Toku Fandom i think the issue is that people commonly regard the "bar" for pretending two characters are dykes as simultaneously too low ("the show just got announced and it has two girls haha what if") and too high (not feeling within their rights to make snap judgements on characters behaving homoerotically the way they do male characters unless it's really blatant) and even when the bar is cleared people absolutely cannot commit to it in any serious manner. jokeships that clear the too low bar will get mountains of fanart and discussion whereas serious ships that clear the too high bar will get a scant acknowledgement every so often but little ever is said or done about them because it is had as already said (notice that we don't do this with m/m ships in similar standing)
anyway we need to talk about toku women sucking and fucking more

people argue with me a lot about bisexual girl komaeda which is fair, the canon rep etc etc. but they fail to realize the ultimate potential of a nagito mikan yuriship.. i dont even ship them but like the idea of it warms my heart it could be so beautiful....and it makes all art of them so very funny

Can watching Yuri turn you gay?
~Greetings~
Today I want to talk about the question:
Can watching Yuri turn me gay?
The answer is No. Ok bye-
Ok, real talk now. Can watching gay shows turn you gay? Are you gay because you enjoy homosexual relationships? Do just queer people fight for queer rights?
I would say no!
Tumblr media
Do you know (for example) the word: Straight Ally? People who consider themselves straight but support their queer folks. Many LGBTQ activists are queer, others are straight/cisgender. Everyone can fight for human rights and love. Are you gay because you enjoy homosexual relationships? Fujoshis are girls who like male x male relationships - are they gay because of this?Males watch lesbian romance stories - does that make then gay? I discovered the question on tumblr. of a guy asking, if he’s gay because he likes Yuri and is more sensible. Having “typical male or female” attributes doesen’t make you gay! In fact it just breaks down barriers between genders. Not acting typical male or female is great, I think. Who needs more cliches? More problems between genders? And not every lesbian acts male and every gay acts female.
Tumblr media
Maybe you can ask yourself:
Did Yuri change my way of looking at people of my own gender? Do I feel attracted to to other females?/Do I feel attracted to other males? Can I imagine having a relationship with a person of my own gender, which goes beyond being friends?
Ok, you can pick that apart as much as you want to, but fact is:
We like watching stuff, that entertains us. It doesen’t have a permanent effect. Just because you like playing shooter games, doesen’t mean you’re a sociopathic killer. Just because you love romance movies, doesen’t mean you want to be in a relationship right now. Just because you saw a show about cooking, doesen’t mean you want to become a chef. So watching a show with a gay character, doesen’t make you gay! That is an argument conservative homophobic people use to control and censor LGBTQ stuff in TV.
Shows like Steven Universe and Sailor Moon got censored because they had female same sex relationships. I gotta say, Yuri CAN open the door the gay world to you. It can wake an interest in you. The interest of finding out your sexuality. Sexuality is beautiful and it’s never bad to find out what you like and dislike. There are so many possibilities: gay, straight, bi, pan, poly, ace, demi, gyno, andro and many more. Do research or talk to new people. I hope that post helped in some way. Tell me your opinion of this. I would love to.
Thanks for reading and see you next time~
