kinda thinking about how the women who serve as maternal figures/raise kids in yyh are never quite ready for it. genkai's an arguable exception, but like.. atsuko had yusuke at 15, shizuru's basically in charge of kazuma full time in her early 20s/late teens (depending on version) with very very absent parents, and even shiori is given a kid she wasn't expecting, in the form of an old, old demon rather than like. a regular, blank slate ass human baby. and although shiori seems to do quite well with kurama, kurama can never be honest with shiori about who he is, or much of what he's seen. if he was, it'd probably make things far more complicated and overwhelming. atsuko, no matter how much she cares for yusuke, Could Not Have Been and thus wasn't ready to have him at 15. her attempts to make the most of that situation have had middling success at best. shizuru has also been placed into a parental role. we don't really know how long she's been raising kuwabara, but that's.. probably still parentification anyway. she shouldn't have to do that, and she shouldn't have to do that so young. and i think some of her coarseness with kuwa is out of frustration with her own inexperience + inadequacy + uncertainty, his not cooperating, and their parents for putting this on her in the first place. the ones who know the full extent of their situation grow desperate and it squeaks out in unpleasant ways, and the one who seems unbothered by it is the only one who has no idea that she's in way over her head. and i mean. ok. gonna preface this by saying keiko is NOT yusuke's mom in any sense of the word. but she does take care of him in a way atsuko couldn't manage to. she's often looking after him and cleaning up after his messes and stuff. she takes him on as a responsibility, and that is, in a way, a caretaker role. not to say that it SHOULD be her responsibility, but it's how she ends up being.
and when the stress of trying to make someone take care of themselves or be kind or good or Whatever goes awry, again, the violence and arguing and distance and ugliness of caring for someone reveals itself.
and i wonder about that. for a series dedicated to physical fighting as a form of communication, what does it say that this extends to the complicated, quietly desperate situations of so many of the women/girls it depicts, whom our more central characters were shaped and raised by?
hell, even hiei touches on this, because hina loved hiei, but there was no way she was prepared for him, obviously, nor for the pain of losing him. rui (whom i also see as a sort of caretaker figure to hiei, inasmuch as either of them were caretakers) literally throws him off a cliff because she couldn't face down the village elders, and out of some mixture of care for hina and, likely, fear for her own survival. and the guilt and pain of that killed hina and deeply wounded rui.
it's like motherhood, this thing that's so often treated as sacred and beautiful, is a kind of stitched up, painful, eggshell-walking thing that hurts parent and child and it's just. oughh

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 17
EthosLab x Yu Yu Hakusho
Tumblr media
For Etho I chose the #1 favourite anime of my childhood, Yu Yu Hakusho!
I sincerely considered rendering Etho in the style of Naruto because I thought it would be funny if I literally just drew Kakashi with a maple leaf patch. However, I actually don't like Naruto very much so I couldn't use that style for this challenge.
So instead I picked YYH because it is by far my favourite shonen anime of all time and still one of the favorite anime in general (possibly my top fav to this day). Plus one of the main cast is a fox demon so, y'know, perfect chance to represent the popular kitsune!Etho fanon.
If you want to learn more about Yu Yu Hakusho and see my style references, continue below the cut!
(Donating to Gamer's Outreach is cool and neat)
Yu Yu Hakusho is a 1990s anime based off of a manga series by the same name. The story follows a delinquent teen named Yusuke Urameshi who opens the show by immediately dying. However he wasn't meant to die, and so he is granted a second chance at life. In return for this second chance, he agrees to become a spirit detective under the lord of the Spirit World, Koenma.
As a spirit detective, it is Yusuke's duty to track down spirits and demons who make their way into the human world and defeat them so they can be returned to the demon realm. Along the way he makes new friends, unlocks powers, and uncovers insidious plots that he must defend the human world against.
The show follows a typical shonen arc (fight bad guy, get defeated, train, power up, fight bad guy again, etc etc) but characters have continuous arcs throughout as they get to know each other and learn more about themselves. The charm of this show comes from the main team of detectives, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei, and their chemistry together and with their other friends.
If you like shonen anime but get a little bored of the filler, I highly recommend Yu Yu Hakusho. It has all the best parts of shonen while keeping your attention with fun characters, unique fights, and, at times, surprisingly high stakes.
Style references:
Tumblr media
The gang! From left to right are Kuwabara, Yusuke, Hiei, and Kurama. This is one of the many promo art pieces the creator has released that make them look like a boyband. I used this as a style reference for Etho's clothing, but I rendered him in the style of the show itself rather than the promo art.
Tumblr media
The show has the same design language but simpler shading. This is also Kurama by the way, he's the kitsune.

"I've noticed that younger fans seem to have trouble connecting the dots that a lot of adults on this website were kids younger or close to the age of Yusuke when this series was originally airing back in the 90s in Japan and the 2000s in the west.
Although these fictional characters' stories ended for them at 18 it doesn't mean that Yusuke and the gang stop being important, interesting, or compelling to us. It also doesn't mean that we have to stop loving these fictional characters and their stories after we turn 19.
If you as a minor 14-17 or someone aged 18 - 25 thay feels comfortable shipping these characters, viewing art of them, and reading fic about them ESPECIALLY NSFW art/fic; but your skin crawls that people older than you are creating that content, then you need to sit down with yourself and ask yourself if fandoms that are literally older than your existence are places that you are ready to be socializing in.
Fandoms that are older than your existence will have fans that are MUCH older than you and they are making content and having interactive conversations.
Yu Yu Hakusho is not an Adult Only fandom but it is a fandom that is Mostly Adults.
I fell in love with this show when I was a pre teen. I'm in my mid 30s. The show's target audience is teenagers. But here is the thing: it's target audience was teenagers back in the 90s and 2000s and that's still most of its audience today because Togashi told a fun and resonant story that tends to stick with its audience.
If you can't handle shipping content or adult conversations (conversations about mature topics and themes not necessarily 18+/NSFW but these are definitely present also) about Yu Yu Hakusho then you should try to avoid adult spaces when searching for discussion or content and stick to spaces specifically for minors.
A space specifically for minors would have a ban against all 18+/NSFW content that is strictly enforced. It would not have an 18+/NSFW section at all.
Tumblr and most of the discord servers for YYH that I've seen are adult spaces. Because there is an expectation that while minors are allowed on the websites they must be over a certain age with parental permission because adult conversations happen here where minors could see them.
All of this to say: Unplug from the adult spaces if you feel uncomfortable with adult themes and content or 18+/NSFW content.
Talk to friends irl about Yu Yu Hakusho or find a minor focused space online to talk about it. Come back to the adult spaces in a few years.
This applies to the 18 - 25 crowd also. If you can't handle seeing someone ship these characters or if someone ships them in a way that you don't agree with and it's so upsetting to you that it's causing you a great deal of anger or distress then you need to consider if you really want to be in the Greater Online Yu Yu Hakusho Fandom at this particular point in your life. Or if maybe you want to filter tags on tumblr and drop sites that you can't filter to make your fandom experience more smooth.
If Yu Yu Hakusho has lasted 30 years then it'll last another 3 or 5 years while you get adjusted and engage with Yu Yu Hakusho in minor focused or safely filtered fandom spaces. Trust me. Yu Yu Hakusho will be somewhere on the greater internet when you're older and you've gotten better at self regulating your intake of content online and your response to seeing content online that you don't like.
Yusuke, Kazuma, Kurama, Hiei, Keiko, Botan, Shizuru, Yukina, Genkai and the rest will be here when you get back. That's the great thing about resonant media. It sticks around because people connect to it.
You can love them as long as you want to. They'll always be there. They're not going anywhere."
This mod would just like to add
Tumblr media
No one shipping Yusuke x Keiko is sexualizing or exploiting minors; yes, even if the person shipping is 35 years old. These are cartoons, fictional, 2d drawings. If you want to play cute with "but they're 14!" No. Yusuke was created in 1992. He is 31.
If any of the above makes you, a minor, uncomfortable, then get out of adult spaces. Back in myyy day (que groans), any show I liked and looked at online had adult content, like Inuyasha or Naruto, even Teen Titans. I'd be 12 and see suddenly complete porn of Raven, and as a teen, I'd just exit out of it. Now, kids see things online, things they shouldn't see because the internet is NOT safe for kids without parental oversight, and their response is to... yell at the people making the content... for other adults.
If you wouldn't walk into Spencers and yell at the employees there for the vibrators, don't yell at adults drawing porn of Yukina and Hiei fucking. Exit out, or ask your mommy and daddy to put restrictions on what sites you can access. The internet is NOT your babysitter.

holy shit, the YYH fandom on fanfiction.net is a GHOST TOWN
pun unintended, but holy SHIT gang, the fandom is seriously dead!
i recently made the choice to leave ffnet permanently for a few reasons:
Most of my work is smutty now, and that kind of content isn't allowed on fanfiction.net per its TOS
The one SFW fic in my roster has now turned smutty, so I can't keep posting, and I REFUSE to chop my story to bits to fit the TOS.
But most importantly: People aren't fostering the fandom anymore, which makes chopping the story to bits NOT EVEN WORTH IT.
like broskis, bruhs, friends and pals, i updated my KuramaxOC fic The Sight Unseen and you know how much engagement it got on ffnet? three comments in six months...but it got MORE THAN 7x THAT AMOUNT on ao3 in even less time
my most recent update has only been out a few weeks and it has ZERO ENGAGEMENT on ffnet, but it's got at least 15 comments on ao3 in the same time...story quality hasn't gone down, it's just that the readership has disappeared
or has it? because the story is getting hits/views on ffnet, it's just that NO ONE IS COMMENTING
here's the kicker: i did get one PM about the story after i updated??? but??? all they did was lecture me for leaving the site WHILE ADMITTING IN THE SAME BREATH THEY NEVER COMMENT ON ANYTHING THEY READ
fandom is community. the only way to forge a community that withstands the test of time is to PARTICIPATE IN IT...so if you're on ffnet and you're wondering why only 50 stories have been created/updated within the last year in the YYH section, and you're a silent reader who doesn't ever comment? hate to break it to ya, bud, but:
YOU'RE THE REASON THE FANDOM IS DYING OVER THERE

i feel like the yyh gang has the best poker nights (and greed, bullshit, general dice/card nights too).
yusuke introduces them to every game cause none of them know any. the others do have to rein him in sometimes, he likes gambling a bit too much.
kuwabara's like my uncle, he always goes all in, goes for the big unlikely roll, etc. and it puts him in dead last 90% of the time but he'll never stop.
kurama's not allowed to look at his cards cause that's the only way anyone else has a chance, but he still wins half the time.
hiei thinks he has a perfect poker face. he does not. also if you try to scare him into folding he'll keep matching your bets no matter how awful his hand is so you can just take all his chips that way.

y'know between getting copied by yanagisawa at the mansion, getting attacked while powerless by mitarai, and getting kidnapped by sensui, kuwabara's kind of the recurrent damsel in distress of chapter black. kinda like how keiko's the damsel in the spirit detective saga. which. has no kuwameshi implications im sure

Was Togashi trying to force Shonen Jump to let him end YYH when he wrote the 3 Kings Arc?
UPDATE: I now have a different read on 3 kings arc and Togashi's authorial intent, so the content in this post is outdated! Just leaving it here anyway for posterity's sake, so we have a record of how my read has changed with a deeper understanding of YYH!
I was gushing about Kuwameshi with @bisaster-energy aka @extra-somethin-somethin and the topic turned to how the 3 Kings Arc was dissonant and unsatisfactory for both of us, coz our beloved Kuwabara wasn't even in that arc, and we both found it hard to believe Kuwabara would just go back to regular life after all that he'd been through with Yusuke.
I mean! After Kuwabara's eyes have been opened to the Makai and Spirit Realm, after the Deeply Meaningful Good he and Yusuke had done to help both people and demons, such as freeing the enslaved mind-controlled humans from the despicable Ichigai, and stopping the world-ending scheme of corrupt humans like Sakyo from destroying the human realm, the Kuwabara we all know and love definitely would NOT have chosen to stay on the sidelines for the sake of studying, especially since the Good he and Yusuke had done would have resonated so fundamentally with who Kuwabara is and his purpose in life!
I mean, C'mon! Studying would have felt pretty empty in comparison! Sure, Kuwabara can apply himself to studying if it's to help Okubo keep his job to feed his family, but Kuwabara isn't in love with studying in and of itself, he was doing it to help someone he cares about. Kuwabara is very similar to Yusuke in that they both fight for people, not abstract ideals like academic achievement.
Plus! Genkai had literally just showed Kuwabara with the Territory arc (when Kato and gang kidnapped Yusuke so easily), that no matter how strong Yusuke got, he will always need Kuwabara to watch his back, even if Kuwabara feels he's nowhere near as strong as Yusuke! I find it extremely hard to believe Kuwabara would then just let Yusuke go off all by himself to the unknown Makai without anyone to watch his back, where Raizen, an unknown powerful demon, had literally just hijacked Yusuke's mind!
So what was going on in the 3 Kings Arc? Why did Togashi make Kuwabara and Yusuke act so OOC in ways that doesn't even make narrative sense?
I personally think the 3 Kings Arc was actually Togashi forcing Shonen Jump to let him end the manga! He hinted at this in his letter to fans, where he explained he desperately wanted to end the manga due to health reasons so he basically forced Shonen Jump into it, and he had exhausted all character directions he could explore within Shonen Jump publication bounds, so the only thing left for him to do was to deconstruct (aka destroy) the characters.
Though Togashi didn't explicitly say how he forced Shonen Jump into letting him end the manga, what better way to destroy / deconstruct Yusuke and Kuwabara in the 3 kings arc than to make Kuwabara act OOC by choosing paper achievements over the concrete deeply meaningful Good he and Yusuke have been doing throughout the series, separate Yusuke from Kuwabara by totally writing Kuwabara out of the narrative entirely so Kuwabara couldn't be the guiding force and moral compass for Yusuke he's always been, make Yusuke act OOC with the cavalier attitude towards demons eating humans, when in 4 Saints Beast arc Yusuke was outright enraged by Byakko saying all humans are his food, and in the Sensui arc just before 3 kings arc, Yusuke was still in moral knots when he thought he'd killed Sensui's doctor, until Genkai eased Yusuke's mind by bringing that guy back to life! Considering that Sensui's doctor was a villain, this shows Yusuke still values life, and tries to spare it wherever he can! There was literally no character developments that could have explained Yusuke's sudden cavalier attitude towards humans being eaten as food at the start of the 3 kings arc that followed, which makes it glaringly OOC.
Destroying the characters with these OOC things would have alienated the audience so much that even if Shonen Jump had forced Togashi to continue the manga, they would have lost the audience anyway, so it's as good as the manga ending! In other words, I think Togashi wrote the 3 kings arc the way he did to force Shonen Jump's hand to let him end the manga.
That's how I interpreted his letter to fans anyway! Togashi and Japanese pple in general are very subtle in the way they communicate and they seldom directly say what they mean, so this is one way to read between the lines of his letter to fans!
Hiei is also a mirror for Yusuke in some ways throughout the series, so the fact that Togashi outright kills Hiei in the 3 kings arc further supports this interpretation that Togashi was destroying / deconstructing Yusuke and Kuwabara, the very heart of YYH, as a way to force Shonen Jump's hand.
I mean, the entire series is built on Yusuke's and Kuwabara's beloved innate goodness, their strong sense of right and wrong, their heart of gold which they had built up and strengthened into a diamond in each other, and the deep and abiding love between Yusuke and Kuwabara! These are all things that the audience loves, so by threatening Shonen Jump with a totally OOC characterisation for Kuwabara and Yusuke that is the opposite of what the audience knows to be their True Selves, and by seperating Yusuke from his beloved Kuwabara, Togashi gave Shonen Jump no choice but to let him end the series, coz the audience wouldn't have continued reading the manga anyway even if Shonen Jump had forced Togashi to continue!
I feel like Togashi's physical health, mental wellbeing, and frustration at not being allowed to tell the story he wanted to was so bad at that point that I honestly think he was just fed up. After he ended the manga, when fans requested more YYH content, he even drew a short manga in response to kill almost all the YYH characters, as his way to say he's done. I honestly don't wanna see this short manga coz my heart would bleed! 😭 but if u wanna, it's in the letter to fans link above.
That's how I interpret it all anyway! Which is why I'm not gonna treat 3 kings arc as canon, I'm gonna imagine my own! Afterall, canon is not some dictate!
So don't be too sad if you too were dissatisfied by it! I was as sad and as hurt as you were by the unsatisfactory 3 kings arc and the palpable loneliness of both Yusuke and Kuwabara in the anime, but I think the anime ending was actually hopeful and dropped some clear hints that Kuwabara and Yusuke will finally get together even after Togashi's 3 kings arc! As for what these hopeful hints are, it'd require another meta to do it justice though! ROFL.
For more great points why 3 Kings Arc didn't make narrative sense and had no character development that could lead to the OOC-ness, check out this post's Notes > Replies > sort by oldest first to read Replies chronologically!
Ahhh i miss my boys so much!! I must say that despite the OOC-ness of 3 kings arc, Togashi gave us such delicious Kuwameshi content all throughout the series that I just can't fault him for it, the poor guy messed up his health coz he overworked himself. I can very happily curate canon that makes the most narrative sense to me! 😄 ❤️🫶🫰❤️🐦🌈

Who would survive the longest on an abandoned island out of the LC gang (including the not quites and hiruko and anyone else u want)
No powers or anything, just pure skills and knowledge!
Oh, I love this ask! I'm going to limit the characters to the core YYH cast + my notable OCs.
BORN SURVIVORS: Kurama, Hiei, Hiruko, Genkai, Minato, and Post-LC Not-Quite-Kagome
Stranded solo or in a group, either way these characters wouldn't have any trouble surviving on an uncharted island for any length of time. Thanks to natural affinities, extensive training or past experience, they know how to obtain food, build shelter, and avoid perilous plants/animals/weather. The ideal people to get stranded with!
Strong Skills: Kurama's knowledge of plants and animal instincts, Hiei's time spent living in the Demon World badlands, Minato is basically a Navy Seal, Hiruko has existed for thousands of years so there's no way in hell he doesn't know how to exist without modern conveniences, and Genkai... is Genkai. Enough said! Also note that Not Quite Kagome will be taking survivalist courses eventually, and once she has those under her belt, she'll basically be unstoppable.
STRUGGLING SETTLERS: Shizuru, Not Quite Keiko, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Botan
These characters have some skills suited for survival in the wilds, but they lack key abilities or haven't received formal enough training to get by easily. By banding together with others (and with enough luck and practice while stranded solo), they could probably learn to survive... but it will be an uphill battle to get comfortable, that's for sure!
Notable Traits: Yusuke's cooking skills and time spent with Genkai, Kuwabara's time being trained by Genkai, NQK was raised by an outdoorsman in their previous life, Shizuru is simply too tough to let anything kill her without a fight, Botan's training with Hiei and roughing it in Spirit World when she fled prison
STRUGGLE-BUS RIDERS: Pre-LC-Not-Quite-Kagome, Koenma, Kaito, Amanuma
It's not that they don't have the ABILITY to learn survival techniques. It's just that they've never had need of them before they got stuck, putting them at a major disadvantage. These characters will try so hard, though. So, so hard. Alas, they don't have any training that might have prepared them for this kind of situation, and/or they're very, very scared of bugs and dirt. Sorry, friends. They're toast.
Dangerous Deficiencies: Koenma is a prince and has never roughed it in his life, Kaito knows some things from reading but has zero real-world survival skills, Amanuma has spent his life indoors playing video games, and Not Quite Kagome pre-training wouldn't be caught dead peeing in the woods

What like... "Shape" would they be, what types, etc...
what aspects of the characters would get chosen for the inspiration of the Pokemon, since they kinda have to be simplified to make sense...

@thuganomxcs Sent: 'Stand up, Vanguard!' for me to tell you what Cardfight Vanguard character I'd think you'd write and why. (Accepting!)
Tumblr media
Character Description:
Katsumi Morikawa, voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama, is one of the major supporting characters in the original Cardfight Vanguard series. A Card Capital regular, Morikawa started off as a bully to the series' protagonist Aichi Sendou, stealing his precious Blaster Blade card in order to use it to beat against the guy who beat him last: Toshiki Kai. However, after witnessing Aichi's first game against Kai and how different he seemed to be when he fought so hard to get his card back, he came to respect him and call him a friend. He is always seen hanging out at Card Captial with his best bud, Izaki, and tries to get involved with whatever the main gang is doing.
Morikawa is the very definition of a passionate guy. He is an overly enthusiastic individual with great pride in his skills, but also enjoys being a mentor to others in the gaming space and even calls Aichi his 'pupil'. He is also a big fan of the pop idol group Ultra Rare, having a hug crush on Kourin Tatsunagi in particular. The guy has a bigger heart than his brain and is very reckless and a bit dumb, but he's very lovable and always tries his best.
Morikawa doesn't use primarily one clan in his deck like most of the cast, with the only real consistent thing about his decks is how many Grade 3's he stuffs into it (because in his words, they are the best!). However, because of this his decks are often very unbalanced and borderline unplayable, which is why he loses most of his fights. When given a proper deck, his skill really shines. The card most associated with him is Juggernaut Maximum, a cyborg defensive tackler in the Spike Brother's clan.
Why Do I Think You'd Write Them:
Morikawa is the vanguard equivalent to Kuwabara, and I think that speaks for itself as to who you'd vibe well with him. More than just that, Morikawa is a very comedic character with a lot of heart and unexplored potential I think you'd do amazing at fleshing out. Plus, he's so harsh darn lovable and so fun to watch on screen (he's a big fan favorite and the center of a ton of memes) that I think you'd really enjoy writing! Legit he'd be the king of dash shenangins. Also, he'd fit perfectly into YYH so there's that too.
