Evolution of Steven's voice

Steven's voice evolved a lot as the show went on and I always found it interesting to see how it changed. I have included clips from every season and tried to space it out somewhat evenly with showing some from the earlier points, middle points and later points of the seasons.

Early season 1: His first voice for Steven. Zach said he had to pitch it lower than his natural voice.

Mid-late season 1: His voice starts to change.

Late season 1: It keeps changing until it reaches that squeaky, a little raspy/coarse, high pitched voice that becomes the standard. Zach has to pitch higher than his natural voice.

Season 2-4: The voice mostly used for Classic Steven. The highest pitch out of all the Classic Steven voices he'd done. While the base speaking voice stays the same, Zach's acting becomes more nuanced over the seasons, especially in emotional scenes.

Season 5: It's bit lower than before. This coincides with how Zach says he struggles to do Classic Steven's high-pitched voice anymore, so it makes sense he lowered it. It’s especially evident in emotional scenes.

Unleash the Light: Steven is 15 years old and his voice reflects that, lying somewhere in between his late season 5 voice and movie voice.

SUF: He had a voice change again. It changes gradually from his movie voice to this last one over the course of SUF. It's more raspier and also has a certain inflection to it that’s different from the movie.

I did originally want to show the gradual change in the movie and SUF voice, but I also wanted to make it clear that his voice is pretty different from the movie to the end of SUF, so I opted to show different scenes from the movie and last episode of SUF to get a feel for what the base voice is even in different situations to show how it changed.

I love knowing that Zach Callison has been Billy Batson quite a few times. My Steven Universe hyperfixation ended back in 2019 or 2020, but I still hold a soft spot for the show. I haven't rewatched it in years and years, but I still like hearing about the cast doing stuff. And honestly? Zach Callison kind of makes sense as Billy Batson. As he gets older, it might slowly make less sense. But him doing it throughout the 2010s? Genius. Steven and Billy probably look and sound not too dissimilar. I'd believe they sound similar. So earnest and optimistic. It's good casting on whoever coordinated those castings.

I don't know if Zach Callison can still do it now. I don't know his age, or if he can pull off young billy batson now. But i think he deserves more work. He was great steven universe, and i can see him doing a lot of good. I haven't actually heard his performances as Billy Batson, but I assume it was good. I think he even did it for Lego DC Supervillains. I want to replay that game soon, anyways. Maybe this is just the excuse I need?

October 23: Happy 27th Birthday to Voice Actor Zach Callison, who provided the voice of the protagonist of the series, one of the members of the Crystal Gems alongside Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst, Peridot, and Bismuth, and son of both Greg Universe & Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond as the character of Steven Quartz Universe; and one of the residents residing in Beach City, son of Yellowtail and Vidalia, and brother of Sour Cream as the character of Onion on Steven Universe.

Hey, I saw that ask that you reblogged about Steven’s singing in the movie, and it reminded me of a different question that I’ve been wondering about. I know that you weren’t the one who posted the answer to that other question, but I feel more comfortable sending this ask to you since I am familiar with your blog. Would you happen to know if Zach was forcing his voice to sound younger in the first couple of seasons of Steven Universe? It had always sounded so very very forced imo, so I was just wondering what the actual deal was with that, and if anyone happened to know anything about it, as Google was no help with this question.

Zach was casted for the role of Steven when he was around 14-15 years old i think, so i do imagine that for the later seasons he had to force his voice to sound younger. I think there was an interview or a podcast where he talked about that he was glad that he was able to do a more older voice for Steven in the post timeskip because he found it somewhat hard to keep up the more child voice of Steven in later seasons. I just don't recall what interview/podcast was.
