Welcome to the 'Best Character with [X] surname' polls!
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!
NB: the surnames are not exactly the same in all the cases, as often they will be a different character. I am, however, grouping them all together otherwise things got more complicated.
If you can't find a surname, it's because I couldn't find enough candidates (at least 3 from 3 distinct medias) to compete. Feel free to submit candidates!
I will be posting several polls at a time, so do come back and check this masterpost to remember which polls are ongoing, who the winners are, and who's coming up next!
Finished polls: Xing/Rong/Nan/Ren/Pan/Qu/Fu/Sui/Tan/You/Sima/Xuan/Chang/Xun/Shangguan/Jian/Qian/Shu/Xi/Yuwen/Cai/Sha/Yin/Ceng/Helian/Zeng/Lou/Mi/Ji/Ping/Tong/Tuoba/Ge/Murong/Hei/Niu/Tao/Si/Pang/Zi/Gongsun/Mao/Qing/Lian

There's only a certain number of hyperlinks that can be added per post, so the rest of the completed polls can now be found here

NPSS Weibo Q&A (20240831) Part 9
This is a Q&A session held on Weibo. People will tag their questions with the hashtag #南派三叔藏海花在线答疑# (#NPSS Zang Hai Hua Online Q&A#) and NPSS will look through the tag to pick some to answer. The event started at 1500 hours on 2024 August 31st.
Folder with screenshots and big compilation google doc is here. Part 1 is here. Part 2 is here. Part 3 is here. Part 4 is here. Part 5 is here. Part 6 is here. Part 7 is here. Part 8 is here.
1301
Q: Shu, what’s the flower language for the Tibetan Sea Flower? A: The distance of a step. (T/N: this is a proverb meaning something that is very close either in distance or as in close to success.)
1302
Q: If the black spot’s tunnels can go from Inner Mongolia to Mount Kunlun, doesn’t that mean that it’s a good candidate for making train tracks? Could it be that the few key locations have tunnels connecting them? When Xiaoge disappeared during the West Queen, did he go somewhere tens of kilometers away?
A: Uh… That’s not my profession.
1303
Q: Sanshu, Sanshu, I really need to know this. When Hei Xiazi and Xie Yuchen finish their mission and go back to their hotel at night, would they chat and drink wine to unwind?
A: On the way, Hei Xiazi would suggest eating at all the street food stalls but would be rejected every time. In the end, the two of them would buy some bread and make do with sitting by the city’s river.
1304
Q: Why does the Zhangs' names always have to do with seafood? Then why isn’t there a Zhang Cuyu? (T/N: Zhang Vinegar Fish.)
A: Now there is. It’s you.
1304
Q: Does Wu Xie like to eat Chinese bayberries? Would he go up to the hills to harvest bayberry during summer while sightseeing the spring in the hills and then make bayberry wine?
A: He likes them but worries that there’s bugs [inside them].
1304
Q:Sanshu, Sanshu, can you describe Hei Xiazi and Xie Yuchen’s story in Iceland in three characters? A: Insanely crazy. (T/N: this was four characters in chinese.)
1305
Q: I would like to know how Sanshu picks the questions to answer. Do you just scroll and pick whichever that you like?
A: [I pick] the ones that I have answers for at first glance. I won’t answer those that require me to think for half a day.
1305
Q: Lei, why do you say that you want to lose weight every year? But why are you still a little fatty every year? Did you say that you’ll do Pilates? Didn’t you say that you want to act as Wu Xie? How will this work if you lack determination?
A: I walked ten thousand steps at 5am yesterday.
1307
Q: What is Hei Xiazi better at, the violin or the erhu?
A: Violin, but musical instruments are interconnected.
1311
Q: Shu, will we see Zhang Yixing act as Eryue Hong again in this lifetime? The prettiest Honghong.
A: I don’t know. Leave it to fate. I’m very chill. (T/N: the term he used here “佛“ is an internet slang meaning to be unconcerned, let things be like Buddha would. )
1312
#NPSS Zang Hai Hua Online Q&A# A lot of people wanted to know how the paper dolls move around. You’ll understand it after looking at this explanation picture about the Kumuli Snake Disaster from Zang Hai Hua.
Tumblr media
1317
Q: Is it a leader-follower relationship between the big paper doll and the small paper doll? Then why did Wu Xie see the big paper doll eating the small paper doll?
A: Snakes eating snakes.
1319
Q: I can't stop thinking about this: When Wu Xie and the gang are on the road of adventure for so long, would their hair get oily? How do they deal with this? Would they bring shampoo and wash up now and then? A: What’s wrong with Xie oil? Is Xie-oil inauspicious? (T/N: the comments say that there’s a pun here, but I can’t figure out what’s the pun.)
1323
Q: Does Zang Hai Hua’s Zhang Qiling’s muscular body fit your imagination? A: It’s not bad.
1326
Q: Sanshu, Sanshu, when there’s nothing to do around Yucun, would Wu Xie feel like his current life is like a dream?
A: This feeling is very nuanced. A dream is too shallow of a description.
just one update for today! i've gotten a bit lazy with translating today because there are a few long ones in a row... wah wah wah whine whine.

Hello since I saw you were rating wish list for DW hope its oke for me to share mine and ask for your thoughts thanks a lot and feel free to ask me my reasoning for them.
Wei: Cao Hong, Cao Zhen (two very important commanders for cao cao), Zhang Xiu (another top cao commander would also help flesh out Jia xu as they were very close historically), Zhong Yao (Zhong Huis dad a very early supporter of cao cao eventually became a top minister extremely interesting guy)
For Wu:
Zhuge Jin, Zhuge Ke ( I don’t think I need to justify it lol), He Qi (very important and skilled general who really helped Sun Quan hold his southern territories also his dw blast design makes him look like wu’s version of Zhang He which i like), Zhang Zhao (was pretty much Sun Quans father figure and closest minister)
Shu (my favorite):
Honestly many, I would even consider removing some of the fictional characters because out of those the only one i like and feel contributes anything to the story is Guan Suo. Anyways
Liao Hua (do I even need to say why lol), Wang Ping (Top general was able to overcome a learning disability and rise to the top), Fei Yi (would really help add an interesting dynamic to Jiang Wei), Zhang Yi or Ma Zhong (either would help fill out with another disciplined warrior) maybe Zhuge Zhan but he comes in quite late.
My least favorite sorry Jin:
Another Sima (so many talented Sima’s lol) my personal choice would be Sima Yi’s brother, Sima Fu (very important minister I think he became imperial chancellor but more loyal to Wei than jin could provide some nice tension with his relatives)
Yang Hu (very important Jin figure although most of his achievements came late in the period, really this is my major beef with Jin) or maybe Hu Lie for similar reasons.
Other:
One of the Yuan Brothers either Shang or Tan would add a nice bit of drama and excitement to Cao Cao’s northern conquest
Liu Biao (super important figure of the period involved with nearly every important faction and character)
Han Sui (really interesting warlord and had a long life) if they decide to go the novel route a one handed moveset would be interesting as well
One of the bandit factions leaders; i like what total war did with the bandit Zhang yan and the bandit queen. It be cool if koei could try something similar good suggestions imo would be Zhang Yan, Yang Feng, or Zang Ba
Cao Hong was very important and might be a good foil for some of the established members of the family, presenting a new dimension to their interactions. Cao Zhen is also hugely important and could be a great foil for Cao Pi and Cao Xiu; showing how important he was also makes it easier for people to understand why his son was given so much authority after Cao Rui's death. Zhong Yao is one of the most important people of the era and while the Wei faction is pretty heavy with tacticians at this point, there's always room for someone of his accomplishments. Zhang Xiu is certainly one of the people I'd love to see. Great for Jia Xu as a character and he can add some muscle to some battles that are otherwise pretty lacking in significant enemies.
Zhuge Jin and Zhuge Ke don't need to be justified, you're absolutely right. That's all pretty obvious. He Qi is pretty significant (arguably one of the most significant people of the era since his efforts to settle the Han population in southern China and bring the region under Han control had long-lasting effects) and pretty unique. I wouldn't be upset about that. Zhang Zhao also goes without saying. He has every quality I'd look for in a new character; long career, close personal relationships to characters who need them, many historical accomplishments, unique personality, etc.
Liao Hua is a pretty common choice. He has longevity on his side (always good but especially for that faction since so many major people all died around the same time) and enough accomplishments to his credit to justify it. Yi is, of course, one of my favorites. It'd be great to have him to represent the leadership between Zhuge Liang and Jiang Wei and their different styles, and his assassination is a huge narrative beat that can really set up Shu's final act. Wang Ping and Ma Zhong were commanders whose accomplishments alone justify their inclusion, in addition to their unique personality traits and history. Zhuge Zhan has potential to be a very intersting character, although I doubt they'd have the guts to go all out with it and have him be part of the court's corruption. Zhang Yi (Junsi) would be an unexpected choice but not totally useless. For Zhang Yi (Bogong), I'd say the same things I said about Liao Hua. And for Zhang Yi (Boqi; often called Zhang Ni), the same as Wang Ping and Ma Zhong.
There are alot of Sima family members who would be decend additions. I think Sima Fu is one of the best, since he was perhaps the most important and had such a lengthy career; he could also really bring out some aspects of his relatives we don't currently see. I think Yang Hu is highly overrated; Hu Lie is pretty great though. He and his brother Hu Fen, along with their father Hu Zun, are all good choices IMO.
The Yuan family could always use a bit more meat to it; I think which members are most useful to have depends on how you choose to expand their tale. I do think Yuan Tan is particularly important, though, given his achievements under his father.
Liu Biao needs no justification. Han Sui is an interesting choice but one that I like.
I can see the merit in including someone to represent one of the major bandit factions of the time, though I'm not sure exactly who I'd cuse. Of the ones you listed, probably Zang Ba since he has much more going on than the others.

造口业的结果
地藏王菩萨的开示:
造口业严重的人,生来就会口吃,更有甚者吃不进去东西,都是造业得的果报,惩罚是没有思量的。不要造口业,忍忍就算了,说了一句话会怎么样啊?

HOW DOES NEGATIVE KARMA OF SPEECH AFFECT ONE’S BODY?
A discourse by Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Di Zang Wang Pu Sa)
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva:
“A person who commits serious negative karma of speech may be born with a stutter or has problems swallowing food. These are the karmic ramifications related to this transgression and punishment is definite. One should never commit negative karma of speech. What it takes is just one moment of forbearance. After all, what can you achieve by blurting out those random words?”

A Helping Hand for Charity.
With a £1.05 million ($1.28 million) buy-in, the event also offered the biggest first prize in the history of tournament poker – £19 million ($23.1 million) but it was the second-place finisher, American Bryn Kenney, not Zang, who came out with the biggest pile of cash.
As the two players prepared to face one another heads up at the London Hilton in Mayfair’s Park Lane, they agreed to a chop. Since at this stage Kenney outnumbered Zang 4 to 1 in chips, he took the lion’s share, £16.9 million ($20.5 million), to Zang’s £13.7 million ($16.6 million).
But Zang clawed his way back against his more experienced opponent. The payday may have been smaller, but it was still the third biggest ever prize in poker tournament history – and it was always about the trophy, right guys?
“Miracles happen,” mused an emotional Zang afterwards.
Kenney Tops All-Time Money List Kenney’s $20.5 million tops the previous record of $18.3 million won by Antonio Esfandiari at the first ever Big One for One Drop, which was held at the 2012 World Series of Poker.
The score catapults Kenney to the top of poker’s all-time money list, with an extraordinary $55 million in gross earnings, over $30 million of which has been accumulated in 2019 alone.
As well as his record score in London on Saturday, the 32-year-old Long Islander has picked up seven-figure wins at other Triton events in South Korea and Montenegro, as well as a score just short of $1 million at the Aussie Millions.
Like the aforementioned Big One for One Drop, the Triton event in London will donate a portion of the prize money to charities — in this case £50,000 ($60,750) of each buy-in.
That means the tournament raised $2.7 million for largely Hong Kong-based charities, dedicated to advancing medicine and improving the lives of disadvantaged children in Southeast Asia.
Who Owns Triton Poker? Triton was founded by two Malaysian billionaire high-stakes poker players, Paul Phua, a former junket operator and bookie, and Richard Yong, a data mining and IT magnate.
The pair were at the center of the biggest cash games in the world when poker erupted in Macau, circa 2010.
Just as wealthy Macau-based businessmen, like Phua and Yong, discovered of Texas hold’em, online poker was effectively shut down in the US by the Department of Justice.
That saw the best American pros, like Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan, skedaddle to Macau, many with copies of Cantonese for Dummies stuffed into their carry-on baggage.홀짝게임
Macau’s big game, which later moved to the Philippines, was notoriously secretive and poker fans would hang on for whispers of pots that had escalated into tens of millions of dollars.
Triton is essentially the public face of the big game – high-stakes poker transplanted into an open area, attracting the biggest players on the high-roller circuit, usually to Asian destinations, like Macau, Manila, and Jeju, South Korea. This is the first time the tour has stopped in London, and only the second time in Europe.
The record numbers at the WSOP this year showed that, despite reports to the contrary, poker is very much alive and well in the West. But it’s also booming in the East. And they like to play big.

Comprehensive Biography of Zhang Chao
Zhang Chao (張超; d. Spring 196), was a minor civil official who was the Grand Administrator of Guangling Commandery. He was involved in a rebellion against Cao Cao and committed suicide upon his death.
Ancestry
See the biography of his brother, Zhang Miao, for it.
Early life
Not much is known about his early life. However, at some point, he served as Grand Administrator of Guangling.[1] He was possibly appointed by Dong Zhuo in order to appease civil officials.
Around 189, Zhang Chao recruited Zang Hong. Zang Hong would become Zhang Chao's most valuable advisor.[1] He helped Zhang Chao manage the affairs of the commandery, which had at least 20,000 people (claimed by Zang Hong) and was prosperous.[2]
Around 190, when Dong Zhuo took control of the capital and later killed former Emperor Liu Bian, Zang Hong urged Zhang Chao to take action against Dong Zhuo, stating,
"My liege, you have received grace from the past generations [of the Han Emperors], and you brothers (Zhang Miao) both occupy major commanderies. Now the royal family is in danger and the traitorous minister has not yet been decapitated with his head shown. This is truly the time where the righteous and courageous of the realm will repay the grace [of the empire] and devote their life [to it]. Currently, our commandery borders are still whole, and its officials and people are flourishing and wealthy. If you sound the war drums, you will get 20,000 people; use it to exterminate and purge the nation's traitor, thereby becoming an exemplar for the world, and such righteousness will become the greatest [of all]!"
Zhang Chao was persuaded by Zang Hong and they went west to Chenliu to gauge the opinion of Zhang Miao. Zhang Miao also disliked Dong Zhuo and agreed to join Zhang Chao. They later met at Shence where Zhang Miao asked what type of person Zang Hong was, adding that he was the one actually governing the commandery. Zhang Chao responded,
"Hong's ability and tact in his strategies is superior to mine. I extremely value him; he is an extraordinary scholar within the seas."
Zhang Miao later met Zang Hong and found out that Zhang Chao was right.[2] They soon contributed his troops to the Guandong Coalition, resulting in him losing his post to Zhao Yu.[3] Zhang Chao sent Zang Hong to try to work with Liu Yu in the north, but due to Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan's conflict, Zang Hong could not advance, and he later reluctantly joined Yuan Shao.[4] After the Guandong Coalition disbanded, Zhang Chao joined his brother.
Around 194, Zhang Chao, along with Chen Gong, Xu Si, and Wang Jie plotted to replace Cao Cao, who was the Governor of Yan Province, with Lü Bu. Zhang Miao also joined them and launched the rebellion. They were initially successful in deposing Cao Cao as Governor of Yan Province, but Cao Cao soon was able to retake his old province within two years.[5] Around Autumn 195, Zhang Miao ordered Zhang Chao to lead their family into Yongqiu and guard it, while he remained with Lü Bu. Cao Cao soon besieged Yongqiu.[6] Zhang Chao told his subordinates that,
"Regarding our current problem, I can only rely on Zang Hong; he will definitely come to save me."
However, one of his subordinates stated that,
"Both the Yuan and Cao are on friendly terms. Hong has been appointed by Shao, and I fear he will not destroy good relations [between Yuan and Cao] by coming here from afar, for that would contradict his fortune and invite disaster."
Zhang Chao replied,
"Ziyuan is a righteous personage of this world. He is someone who will never betray his original [lord]. I fear his power may be restrained, that we will not reach each other, that is all."
Zang Hong did try to convince Yuan Shao to lend him troops, only to be rejected, sealing Zhang Chao's fate.[7][8] The siege lasted about four months, but soon, in early Spring 196, Cao Cao's troops broke into Yongqiu. In response to his defeat, Zhang Chao committed suicide.[9] Cao Cao had Zhang Chao's clan exterminated to the third degree.[6][7][8][9]

My Sunshine or My Sunshine: Directors Cut. 5-7
Story: 6
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10?(depends on which half)
Comparable to: You Are My Sunshine (cdrama)
Oof this one is a humdinger. Just a side note, almost every character is written bonkerly insane. In one hand you gave the male lead where he’s one of the worst asshats I’ve seen in a drama in a long time, I mean it’s like by episode 17 where he suddenly has an epiphany and does a 180 to his personality your to the point screaming to the female lead why do you still like him. Speaking of which comes one of the naive mush poorly written female lead. I don’t know how many times I threw something at my tv shouting tell him everything since apparently he’s too egotistical to think she’s the “problem”. Basically the whole drama is really melodramatic and really really soapy. For some reason it did make me keep on watching although the fast forward button came in handy. The directors cut (the condense version) isn’t all bad I just wish they included the secondary couple more which was more of a highlight for me. I mean overall I have to say to go in with very low expectations. Want to also add in that the main lead’s relationship is definitely not healthy at all.

Biography of Qiao Zong (JS100)
[So-called King of Shu.]
Qiao Zong was a native of Nanchong in Baxi. His grandfather Xianzhi had esteem and fame in the western lands. Zong as young was yet prudent and cautious, the people of Shu loved him. He became Office Army Advisor who Calms the West.
1st Year of Yixi [405 AD], the Inspector dispatched Zong, Hou Hui, and others to lead the various counties [and] Di to advance the troops and go down east. Hui was duplicitous, and owing to that the people of Liang# province did not happily go east, he wanted to plot against the Inspector of Yi province, Mao Qu. He and Yang Mei of Baxi agreed on a plan at Wuchengshuikou, and together they pressured Zong to become the ruler. Zong was afraid, and did not do it, but ran and jumped into the river. Hui pulled him out and requested it, after two or three times, he thereupon used troops to force Zong on top of the carriage. They attacked Qu's younger brother, the Colonel of the Western Barbarians, Jin, at Fucheng. The city fell and Jin died there. Zong then titled himself Inspector of Liang# and Qin provinces.
When Qu heard that Zong had rebelled, he went from Lüecheng. He dispatched Army Advisor Wang Qiong to lead 3 000 men and chastise Zong. He also dispatched his younger brother Yuan to lead 4 000 troops to maintain Qiong's rear [and?] advance. Zong dispatched his younger brother Mingzi and Hui to resist Qiong at Guanghan. Hui struck and routed Hui and others, and pursued until Mianzhu. Mingzi set up two ambushes to wait for him, and greatly defeated Qiong's multitudes. The dead were eight or nine out of ten. A encampment household member from Yi province, Li Teng, opened the city to admit Zong.
When Mao Qu had died, Zong used his cousin Hong as Inspector of Yi province, and Mingzi as General who Garrisons the East and Inspector of Ba province, to lead his multitude of 5 000 people and station at Baidi. He declared himself King of Chengdu.
Next Year [406 AD], he dispatched envoys to declare himself to vassal of Yao Xing. He wanted to to follow the river course east to rob, in the name of chastising the General of Chariots and Cavalry, Liu Yu. He begged for regiments from Yao Xing, and moreover asked for Huan Qian as assistance. Xing dispatched him.
9th Year of Yixi [413 AD], Liu Yu used the Grand Warden of Xiyang, Zhu Lingshi, as Inspector of Yi province. The General who Soothes Boreal, Zang Xi, the Grand Warden of Xiapi, Liu Zhong, the Grand Warden of Lanling, Kuai En, and others to lead a multitude of 20 000, and proceed from Jiangling to chastise Zong.
Earlier, when planning the prime leader, everyone objected against his person, Lingshi's qualities and name were simple and shallow. Yu went against the multitude and pick him out, and granted him half of those beneath his banner. Zang Xi was Yu's wife's younger brother. In rank was put on his right side, and also was subordinate to him.
Lingshi stayed at Baidi. Zong dispatched Qiao Dafu with a heavy force to defend Fu. Lingshi's regiments stayed at Pingmo, 200 li from Chengdu. Zong dispatched his Great General Hou Hui and Archer-Servant of the Masters of Writing, Qiao Shen, to station at Pingmo. Between the banks there were continuous walls, multi-storied buildings and heavy palisades. The multitudes were not yet able to attack. Lingshi spoke to Liu Zhong, saying:
The sky will soon be hot and feverish, the thieves are now strengthening the defiles. With the difficulties in wining in an attack, they will merely besiege our regiments. I wish to amass honed and rested troops, wait for cracks and then advance. How would you Sir consider it?
Zhong said:
Not so. Previously we spread words that the great general would make use of the Inner River, and for that reason Dafu did not dare to let go of Fu. Now a heavy army pressures him, setting out where he did not expect, and Hou Hui's followers have already wasted their courage. We can rightly so make use of his nefariousness and attack him, in the circumstances we will surely vanquish. After we vanquish Pingmo, Since we can beat the marching drums and go forward, Chengdu will surely be unable to defend. Suppose we placate the troops and grasp each other, empty and full will see each other. The Fu Army then will come, and it will be difficult to stand against them. Advancing but unable to fight, and withdrawing without being supplied, more than twenty thousand people will become the Shu children's captives, and that is all.
He followed him. At daybreak, he advanced to attack and vanquished everywhere. He behead Hou Hui and others, and so then advanced. Zong's city defenders crumbled apart one after the other. Zong therefore set out and ran. His Prefect of the Masters of Writing, Ma Dan, sealed the granaries and treasuries to wait for the royal regiments. When Lingshi entered Chengdu, he executed those relatives with the same grandfather as Zong, the remainder he all calmed and settled down, and sent them back to their professions.
Zong's flight first went to his [family] tombs. Zong's daughter spoke to Zong, saying:
Fleeing is surely no escape, but will only cause humiliation to us. When they die, dying at their ancestors' tombs is possible.
Zong did not follow, he threw in with Daofu at Fu. Daofu angrily spoke to Zong, saying:
A full-grown man's position, if he has these merits and legacy, how can he discard it! Now [you] wish to become a surrendered captive, how can it then be gained! What person will not die, why fear it unduly!
Following that, he threw his sword at Zong, and hit his horse saddle. Zong left him, and then hanged himself.
Daofu spoke to his followers, saying:
I rearing you all was exactly for the present day. Shu's survival or destruction in truth is tied up with us, and not with King Qiao. We still live, and are yet enough for a single battle.
The soldiers all promised and assented. Then [he?] scattered gold and silks as bestowals on his multitudes. The multitudes accepted them and fled. Daofu ran alone to Guanghan. A native of Guanghan, Du Jin, apprehended him.
Zhu Lingshi moved Ma Dan to Yuesui, , followed after and killed him. When Dan was moving, he spoke to his followers, saying:
Marquis Zhu did not send us off to the Captial City to wipe out the multitude mouths. I will surely not escape.
Then he washed and cleaned, and laid down. He pulled the rope and died. Shortly after Lingshi's regiments arrived, they thereupon exposed his corpse.
