Infodump time!!
Ok SO I have been doing martial arts for more or less half a year. It's so much fun! But it's not the most commonly known kinds of martial arts, but a Brazilian kind of fight style called capoeira.
Capoeira was developed by enslaved African people in the sixteenth century. Brazil received almost half of all the African people shipped to the American continent. Because of that, most of our population is black ( around 52% if I'm not wrong. ) We also have way more mixed people than most other countries, according to Gilberto Freyre because "there was no oficial policy of extermination and segregation of black people" which is total bulshit! Brazil is still a very, very racist country, unfortunately. Our police officers are some of the most violent in the world and constantly murdering black people in communities in order to 'solve drug problems' and stuff like that.
Anyways, capoeira was invented as a form of resistance. It is not like most other fight styles because it mixes music, dance, and fight moves. It is like that because when it was invented, the enslaved people had to pretend they were dancing or celebrating. If the colonizers knew they were training, they would've broken it off and punished them.
Nevertheless, in Brazil we had things called Quilombos. Those were seld suficiente communities formed by black people who had scaped their farms, and many times they also had indigenous people and even free people who were poor and couldn't survive by themselves. The biggest of these communities was the Quilombo de Palmares, led by a guy called zumbi, and his partner Dandara ( both very brave people who fought until they could no longer and died for their cause. I find Dandara to be an especially strong person. ) Anyways, what matters to us here is that the Quilombo de Palmares was defended for more than a century, many times using capoeira. The colonizers had resources, firearms, armies. Still, they lost so many times they offered to compromise. You know what's that ? Entitled people compromising ? Well, half compromising. They said they would leave the quilombo alone if they stopped accepting new slaved people who had run off. Zombie wanted to take the deal, but Dandara refused. It was all of them, or none of them. He was killed by the colonizers and his body was hang up, and she ended up committing suicide in order to not be captured.
Anyways I LOVE capoeira. I have training 2 times a week, I have awesome friends there and the teachers are super helpful, every time we play one on one is super fun and the music is awesome and the traditional instruments are super duper cool!!! I'm always learning something new I just love it so much. I love clapping along the music until my hands hurt and falling and tripping when I try something bold, I love singing along, love knowing I'm improving, I love kicking and dodging until my whole body's sore. I love the community. I love capoeira.
Wow. It’s so cool that you took the time to learn the skill AND all of its rich and important history! What’s you favorite thing you’ve learned throughout the training?

hi guyss
its been ages since I have been on here and I kinda miss it a lot, I am way more active on twitter under lioncunt but that's not what I logged in to say
its been a crazy (good and bad) months and I wanted to share a little bit
most importantly, I got off my medication which is crazy good. I have been on them for more than 5 years and I have very young so that's a lot. I started them when I was 14/15 and had been needing them since I was like 12 so getting off them is a huge thing for me. I am very truly happy about it because I truly didn't think about a time where I wouldn't need them. I thought it was going to be permanent especially since I am still living with my mom. its been crazy to see how depressed I was all my life, how sad I was. I haven't been taking my meds for like a year but that was me saying "I dont think I need them anymore" but to have a medical professional say "yeah you good" was crazy. bonkers. its so weird and so gratifying but that the same time I don´t want to come on here like everything is fine.
one of the thing that has made my months crazy is accepting I was abused. accepting that I am still abused. and have been, since birth. its really fucked up because now I truly see how little I was (and my brother too) and how much shit I was put through. that I am still put through. because that's the word. abuse. I always knew things were different but never ever considered it abuse. its a big word especially when its accompanied by child. I was a kid. still am in a lot of ways.
one of to good stuff is that me and my brother are thick as thieves which is something I never saw it happening. I just to be so angry at him. call him hideous names and now, he's the only person who actually supports me at my house. every weekend we go out and do a little brotherly outing, small as eating pizza or going to the farmers market. and its so nice. never thought that would make me as happy as its making me.
idk if I ever updated y'all but me and my ex broke up for good couple of months back. I don´t actively miss her but I have been thinking more theses lasts two weeks (I am over analyzing shit but in the normal sphere of things) about her unfortunately because she's in my class so I have to see her everyday but I low-key love hating her. its so nice. its such a normal thing and I love messing shit up. like I am sorry for her for being a child sometimes but I deserve to act like it ( it has been a while since I have bugged her, I actually only bugged her truly once and I learned my lesson!!!! I thought that bugging her was going to help to make me not hate her but it just added fuel to the fire so I leave her alone and I was having a hard week but yeah its so nice to hate her and call her names in my head. is it healthy? no but there's worse things in my life. the funniest thing that has happen is that I had a presentation on bipolar and she thought I was calling her bipolar through the presentation because my friends came to talk to me bc she was making faces all the time I was speaking so that was fun. in her defense, I used to say she had very bipolar behavior ( I actually forgot about it and only linked the dots after my friend talked to me and was like "she thinks you are talking about her") so yeah sdhfjhsdjfshdjfhsdjfhjsdsdjfhdjfsdhj do I really think she has bipolar? no. does she has a lot of bipolar behavior? definitely but you know, who's to say? I had to hold myself back a lot because I had to urge to send a text in the group we have saying "some people told me there wasn't a lot of happy faces while I was presenting, if anyone has a problem you could have talked to me and presented in my place" but as I said, I learned my lesson and I am staying quiet HUHUAHAUHAUAHUA
about jiji, my dearest, idk yet, going to the doctor again for the first time after the diagnosis and going to run more tests. wish me luck and will update yall again afterwards.
about my mom and her zumbi state, there's a light in the darkness because (dont ask me why or how) we have money to travel and see my family in Portugal next year. its going to make it or break her for good. I truly dont know what I want more. she's not living until I am thirty and I actually dont want it. if it didn't mean I would have more responsibilities, I would want her dead now, for her own good too (I am serious)

Free fire zombie mode
Free Fire has another mode! Apocalipse Zumbi is a one-player vehicle-just mode on the Bermuda Guide. The player can never leave his vehicle. Likewise with any mode, the victor is the last survivor. Experienced Free Fire players will find this mode like Demise Race , yet there are a few distinctions. Look at our tips and endure the Zombie End times!
Free fire zombie mode
1. Plan for the End of the world The vehicle picked for this mode is the land and/or water capable motorbike, outfitted with directed rockets and a weighty programmed automatic rifle. The automatic rifle points consequently, with a sluggish however strong pace of discharge. The rockets need you to arrive at the right distance to lock on, that is to say, to fix your objective. Assuming you shoot after the objective is fixed, the shots are more proficient. In this mode, there is no dispersed plunder . To get plunder you want to wipe out zombies and/or different players. Zombies can be disposed of in any capacity, yet the two rockets and automatic rifle ammo are restricted, so don't squander it. Assuming you find the opportunity, turn on Zé Truck mode and run over the zombies. As well as saving shots and rockets, you can move the plunder immediately. 2. Land perfectly located You're burnt out on perusing this exhortation in any Fight Royale game, right? In this mode, involving your insight into the guide in another way is fundamental. It is a waste of time to bounce on Plant or Top to be quick to get plunder. There is no plunder, recollect? Attempt to arrive on a level spot , where your bicycle can arrive at some speed rapidly, get a few zombies and, far better, shock different players. A few cool spots to begin would be Cape Town, the Air terminal, Bimazaki and the island's principal street, however any level spot will do. 3. Zombies are significant Since there is no ground plunder in this mode, Zombies are an effective method for getting ammo, clinical packs and fix units, as well as working on your bicycle. Take out the zombies as you see fit and get the provisions. Investigate the small guide and the zombie gatherings will be set apart with a red image. The more zombies you dispose of, the more opportunity you have of working on your bicycle and gear. Likewise, you will help humankind. Have you at any point considered what a lot of zombies are free as a bird on an island? 4. Speed up! Try not to sit around idly with unpretentious moves or attempting to conceal your bicycle in a brush, trusting that foes will commit suicide. In this mode, speed matters. Keep your bicycle at a consistent speed, going after at rapid and withdrawing much quicker. Stay away from slopes or hindrances that can dial you back or make you defenseless. Your bicycle, with the right parts, can have the super. Utilize that additional power with flawless timing. 5. Fix and fix Watch out for the bicycle's defensive layer and its life bar. Whenever you get into a shootout or endure harm, fix the bicycle and/or utilize the swathes. You can fix and recuperate in the works. As currently referenced, the development is crucial for win in this mode. Keep the bicycle running and your personality healthy and you will find success. 6. Assault at the best point The back of the foes is awesome to assault, in light of the fact that in this mode, the player's vision is restricted and he can not shield himself successfully, in any event, while driving in a crisscross. Moreover, their rockets are situated at the front of the bicycle. Subsequently, they will be more compelling in front facing shot. To put it plainly, consistently attempt to astound your foes by going after from the back, regardless of whether you really want a few assaults. Move in enormous circles, utilizing deterrents to compel your foes to change position, take an alternate route, hop or utilize another strategy that you view as powerful. 7. Ace the distance Your rockets (like some other rocket) need a distance to acquire speed and arrive at the objective. On the off chance that you are excessively near the adversary, the rockets will fizzle. Continuously attempt to go after your adversaries at the right distance, without getting excessively close. In like manner, on the off chance that you are gone after and unfit to escape, attempt to abbreviate the distance so as not to allow your adversary to utilize all the more impressive weapons.

WARNING : I'm just an addict ... addicted to music. There are people who are born to make music, o8 thers are born to hearing. Whenever was part of this second group. Maybe it's. a habit, I gotta use, even if it 's rock, jazz or the quiet storm. Great pictures of the things I love - music, painting, books, photography, architecture, design, women, and more. I love music more than lasagna. Better to burn out than fade away. The older you get, the better life gets. But time also seems to be accelerating, the clock running too fast. So, looking at those early days, everything is very slow, stretched, and great significance. Please, sign petitions to help with Brazil racist president. We need your help, people are dying.
Tumblr media
João Alberto Silveira Freitas, a 40-year-old black man, was beaten to death by security guards at a Carrefour in Porto Alegre on Thursday night (19), in Brazil.
Videos showing the beating in front of the store and the attempt by rescuers to save the man, known as Beto, circulated on social networks and provoked a mobilization against racism.
Beto died on the eve of Black Awareness Day, celebrated this Friday (20) in reference to the death of Zumbi, the leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, located between Alagoas and Pernambuco.
It wasn't a day to celebrate. We have nothing to celebrate.
Today, our president Jair Bolsonaro said "There's no such thing as racism in Brazil" since our population have many variety of skin tones (bc our ancestors forced black people to marry white people). How is there no racism in a counry that kills black people everyday, non-stop, even if more than 50% of the population is black.
We claim justice for João Pedro, João Alberto, Maria Eduarda, George Floyd, Marielle Franco, Trayvon, João Vitor, Emily, Philando, Aghata Felix, Evaldo Rosa, Atatiana, Walter Scott, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, Breonna, Vanessa, Marcos Vicinius, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor and Jeremias.
Black Lives Matter. Vidas Pretas Importam. Please stay safe and wear a mask.

Feel free to ignore if you don’t feel like it’s appropriate, but how do you think Luciano dealt with being a dark skinned man back in colonial days up until the end of the empire? I doubt he was well accepted among the higher ranks and I was wondering how he coped with that.
it’s a completely valid question and I think about it when thinking about his character, but I tend to avoid talking about this. As you (maybe) know, I’m a white guy from a mostly white community, and only a few years ago I started to educate myself about racism and what it means to be black and white in the country that was in the past the largest modern slave society.  I would hate to try to talk about this topic and just end up saying uninformed, ignorant bullshit, contributing to making this fandom an even worse space for people of color. I’m gonna try my best, but if I do end up saying something offensive or uninformed I’ll delete this post immediately and go further educate myself
Here are some thoughts, focusing mostly on the empire and the abolitionist movement, which is what i have read the most about:
during the colonial days, I think he was pretty much not involved with the higher ranks, and his position of being dark-skinned and a colony made him from the start have great sympathy and connection with the enslaved population compared with the white elite. Even if he himself was not a slave and had access to spaces they didn’t, their position was more similar than different.
I can also see him going to quilombos in secret and learning a lot from the people there. Capoeira, for example, was first developed in Palmares, so I can see him going there (and to other quilombos), learning it from the begging, and overall connecting and learning from these free people both in terms of culture (capoeira, music, stories, etc) and in terms of resisting oppression and thriving in adversity. Considering how important figures like Zumbi dos Palmares are in Brazil not just for the black population but in general, I think it’s safe to say Lu got to meet most of them in his life and truly admire and grow from them.
I think only when he stopped being a colony (1815) did he start to really be involved personally in the high ranks, and with the development of a white Brazilian elite (separate from the Portuguese elite), he started to be more influenced by them too. And as I’ve discussed before, when independence came, he was willing to ignore a lot of the worst aspects of the process, like it being declared by a Portuguese prince and especially, the worst aspect of independence that people don’t criticize enough, the continuation of slavery.
I think this pattern of him getting more involved in the higher ranks and avoiding thinking about slavery and racism continued throughout the empire. However, as a dark-skinned man, it’s not like he could just close his eyes, because though his position allowed him influence and presence on the palaces and the court life and the politics, I also don’t think the high ranks simply accepted him.
For example, I can see white senators pointing as his skin as proof that Brazil had too many black people, and how he couldn’t be trusted because he could turn on them at any moment (the Haitian revolution made the white elite and even the white lower class fear a revolution from the black population, enslaved and freed, considering they were the vast majority of the population), or to talk about the need for the immigration policies that had as a goal a whitening of the population. Him being present on these discussions and used as an argument against people who looked like him, who were an important part of him, and who he had spent the bigger part of his life with, obviously affected him on a personal level.
On the other hand, the later decades of the empire also had important figures like Machado de Assis and José do Patrocínio, considered the biggest writer of the country and the most famous lawyer of the empire, respectively. And they also no doubt had a great influence on him, as well as the abolitionist movement as a whole, which I like to think though he couldn’t openly support as a nation, as a person he was very sympathetic to it (i see him pretending to just be your average lawyer going to the abolitionist meetings under a fake name and always keeping a close eye to what was happening).
For most of the empire, he was mostly willing to accept slavery as a necessary thing, and again, just avoid thinking about it. However, everything changed after the Paraguayan War (me? bringing up the war in an empire post as a key point? what a shock). Perhaps the one definite silver lining of that war was how much it strengthened the abolitionist movement in Brazil, with most of the army that had truly developed during the war supporting it, and also with it resulting in thousands of black man being freed (all the slaves sent to fight in the war immediately received freedom if they survived, which most did), as well as white soldiers joining the movement. This also coincided chronologically with the rise of figures I mentioned on the last point.
So by the 1870s and 1880s he was fully supportive of abolition and less afraid to say that to the face of white slaveowners at the palaces when they would drag him to their racist conversations. He was also day after day more tired of this whole empire thing and his willingness to ignore the worst aspects of it was running dry.
However, by the time slavery was finally abolished, I again see him being very uncritical of its mistakes (the obvious one being that the abolition law gave no support to the freed population, no policies for them to access land and education, no efforts in integrating them into the economy, most having to remain working for their former owners or even losing any possible jobs to white immigrants that were sent here literally to replace them [btw just to make this very very clear this was not the fault of the poor goddamn immigrants that came here because their lives in Europe sucked, but of the government that had an actual official policy with that goal]).
In summary, I think the way he dealt with the tension of being a dark-skinned empire based on slavery under a white monarchy was, as it tends to be with him, contradictory and complicated. One big character flaw I see in him is this willingness to ignore hard truths, but in a way this was something he couldn’t completely ignore because he was always being reminded of it. Still, I think he ignored it to the whole extent in which he could, during the empire, until the war. After it, I think he really couldn’t anymore, as the abolitionist movement grew and men like Machado influenced him more and more.
Anyway, these are my thoughts on this, but again they are coming from a person who has never experienced racism in his life, so I truly apologize if anything I said was ignorant and offensive to any degree. I considered maybe not answering this, but tbh I can’t possibly say I study Brazilian history and want to write about Brazilian history if I avoid such a central topic to this history. I do hope this was coherent and good though. As always, everyone is welcomed to share their own thoughts.

How Bahia became the most progressive football club in Brazil
Bahia have cut prices, given fans a voice, tackled political issues and dedicated themselves to ‘affection, integration and love’
Tumblr media
As the Bahia players walked on to the pitch for their Série A game against Ceará last month, there was something striking about their shirts. Their elegant blue, red and white stripes were covered by splotches of black around the neck, under the arms and on the hem. They had not accidentally spilled a pot of paint on the kit bag. Bahia were making a statement.
For the last 52 days, hundreds of tons of thick crude oil had been washing up on beaches in the north east of Brazil. Nobody knew where the oil was coming from and the government’s response was woefully inadequate. “We saw the news being spread,” says Bahia president Guilherme Bellintani. “But it was timid in relation to the scale of the disaster.” So the club decided to speak up.
Bahia’s intervention on the subject came as no surprise to football fans in Brazil. Over the last two years, the club have developed a reputation as the most democratic and socially engaged club in the country, running campaigns on issues such as racism, LGBTQ rights, the demarcation of indigenous lands and the treatment of female fans in football stadiums. At the same time, they have managed to reduce ticket prices, increase revenues, pay off some of the debt that was crippling the club and improve their results on the pitch.
They first attracted media attention during Black Consciousness Month last November, when the team took to the pitch with the names of 20 historic black Brazilian leaders on their shirts. Names ranged from Dandara and Zumbi dos Palmares, two 17th-century leaders of escaped enslaved people – to capoeira master Moa de Katendê, who was murdered last year in a politically motivated attack.
The group has gone from strength to strength since then. In April, the club released a video showing indigenous Brazilians symbolically painting the white lines of a football pitch with the hashtag #DemarcaçãoJá (“Demarcation Now”) and used their players’ shirts to pay tribute to indigenous leaders. In May, the club set up an app for women to report harassment inside the stadium. The information they submit is then passed on to a specialist police unit made up of female officers who respond immediately. The club have also shown their support of LGBTQ rights, including replacing the blue, white and red corner flags with rainbow ones.

It’s not over until the Fat Lady sings | Part VI
Pairing: Penny Haywood x Jacob’s Sibling
Summary: It’s over. It’s your final day at Hogwarts. It’s time to say farewell to your friends and soon enough the start of new adventures.
Part I  |  Part II  |  Part III  |  Part IV | Part V | Part VI
You cannot recognize the direction in which you are walking with precision. All the jungle looks exactly the same to you. Tree after tree, vine after vine. Unlike Professor Oliveira, who navigated the jungle with such ease as if it were her home, you found yourself constantly fumbling with the uneven terrain, Penny constantly bumps against your back as a result.
Rakepick and Professor Oliveira come into a halt. You feel Penny’s body press against you again before she settles on holding the sleeve of your robe.
“Visitors first, por favor.”
It’s a tent under the disillusionment charm. You are pleasantly surprised. You had only read of this but never actually practiced it yourself. You knew very few people from the top of your head who could hold such charm for an indeterminate amount of time.
Rakepick goes first. You step aside to let Penny pass through. She looks at you as if you had suddenly grown another magical head. You can only assume she had never been inside a tent with an
Undetectable Extension Charm before.
“Just go,” You whisper. Noticing her hesitance, you take her hand into yours and lead the way.
It isn’t spacious or anywhere fancy unlike the last tent you were in with your parents while on the last Quidditch World Cup. Unlike you, a true and loyal fan of Maximus Brankovitch, most of your vapid family members spent most of the five days of the that last Quidditch Final inside it.
On the back, there are two doors. At simple inspection, a small kitchen, with a stove and a breakfast bar with four wooden stools. All sorts of unknown plants perched in apparent order occupy the squared dining table. You feel Penny squeeze your hand before letting it go. The plants on the table are the first things that pick her interest.
“Do you know any of these, menina?”
Penny’s blue eyes shine in excitement, “Cordia verbenacea, for ointment against powerful magical scars, euphorbia tirucalli or naked lady can mimic almost any disease, and an awakening potion with Trichilia catigua can stop you from batting an eye for days.”
Maria Aparecida Oliveira smiles widely, almost feverishly, her resemblance to a cat, uncanny.
“Maravilha, maravilha,” she grabs both of Penny’s hands into her bony ones, “Do you enjoy potion making, dear?”
“I love potion making.” Her words carry emphasis, a doting mother talking about her child. Her blue eye glaze over. It is not very often that you see Penny’s eye shine with such excitement.
“Perfect! I sense, you and I will enjoy working together my child, very good, very good.” she pats
Penny’s hands before letting them go.
Her tawny eyes are magnetic, neither of you can take your eyes of Professor Oliveira. It is almost as if you feel compelled to look at her. Her eyes a magnet, the unnatural feeling of it made a shudder run down your spine.
A sudden thunder erupts through the tent, the familiar sound of a magical apparition. No one speaks as all heads turn to the entrance. The surroundings turn suddenly still, the idea that you had just escaped a persecution is fresh in your mind.
You unexpectedly feel the pointy but heavy pressure of a wand behind you. You even your breathing; the last thing you want to disclose to a potential enemy is fear. That much, you do know.
“Quem são?” the voice is deep and masculine. You are instantly confused. Despite having your eyes set on the door, your eyes did not manage to notice a single indication of movement.
“I don’t understand you.” you speak through gritted teeth.
The situation unnerves you. Penny stands motionless beside Professor Oliveira, her grip tight against her own wand, so tight in fact you can recognize a perceptible quiver. Rakepick, on the other side of the room, looks uninterested in your direction with no apparent intention of coming to your aid. Had this been a set up all along? What are you supposed to do in a situation like this? You are not prepared for an ambush…
“Nico! Eles são aliados, uncover yourself.” Professor Oliveira’s voice is loud and clear.
You turn your head the moment you feel the pressure of the wood disappear from your back. Before you, the silhouette of a tall black man starts to materialize from head to toe. It is almost as he had been hiding under an invisible cloth. He towers over you; his deep sunken dark eyes connect with yours.
You tense your grip around your own wand instinctively.
“Nicolau Zumbi,” he nods in acknowledgment.
“He is my assistant; it is a couple of years since he is out of school, not much different from yourselves.”
Professor Oliveira speaks casually, as if this stranger had not just threatened you with his wand.
Something in you screamed you to run, to escape, but your feet would not budge. Fear, strong and foreign, paralyzes you. A couple of steps from you, Penny Haywood looks unusually pale.
“Excuse me, I did not know.” His words are morose, but his English, unlike his companion’s, is easier to understand albeit American sounding.
“You have to understand, crianças,” you feel her bony hands on your shoulder now, warm against your tense muscles, “the Amazônia is a sacred area, home to a restricted number of botanical and  magizoological species, only wizards with a special permission from the congresso are allowed here.”
“Do we have permission?” Penny ventures, still pale but noticeably more relaxed.
Oliveira’s laugh is loud and melodic, unlike any other laugh you had heard before. You can only assume the tent is charmed with a silencing spell as well.
“Paty, are your children unaware of the way you work?” she can’t hide the laughter from her words as your attention shifts to your ‘mentor’. Rakepick doesn’t look humored, and remains nonplussed to your reproachful stare.
You know Patricia Rakepick is self-serving and narcissistic, but jeopardizing your life without your acknowledgement is beyond utilitarian. Machiavellian. A total disregard of Penny and you as individuals. Had she told you from the beginning you were about to immerse yourself in an adventure bordering on illegal in another country, perhaps, you would have given it a second thought. You feel ashamed about these thoughts, considering the amount of dangerous misgivings you got your friends and yourself into as a student. Yet, the fear in your heart, for Penny on the most part, is real.
Your body finally moves a step forward on Rakepick’s direction. Her impassive stare challenges you.
You feel Professor Oliveira’s bony hand tense over your shoulder. It is Penny who finally stops you, however, with a gentle hand over your arm.
She does not have to say it, her hand, always gentle carries a firm ‘don’t do this’. You sigh through your nostrils in frustration. This is too much information for you to remain calm a minute longer.
“You are probably tired from the trip; we can talk about this tomorrow, if you excuse me.” Her words are final as you watch Patricia Rakepick disappear behind one of the doors inside the tent leaving you dumbstruck.
“Nico, offer them tea, querido, it is a long trip, after all.”
“That would be lovely,” Penny chimes in as she calmly guides you towards one of the wooden stools in the kitchen.
You drink your tea in silence. You are frankly not convinced of trusting these people but you are beyond livid to think properly. You don’t really listen to what Maria Aparecida Oliveira has to say.
“This is an ancient brew of tea, far from magical but particularly recomforting”, she says.
Her words rapidly drift in the distance in and out of focus as words of retellings of her own travels and adventures go through deaf ears.
“You’ve been silent.” Penny’s words are a whisper, conversely loud in the silence of the tent.
You settled on the opposite room to Rakepick. The room is empty, except for a desk and a candle. With you, two sets of blankets and pillow. Oliveira sent you to sleep after the tea, of which you did not drink a single drop.
You have had been so busy racking your brains about the situation you failed to notice Penny had not fallen sleep. Granted, sleeping on a flat floor does not make it any easy. The weather is so mild and humid you had to doff your travelling cloaks altogether by the floor.
“We should be sleeping.” You turn on your side to look at your friend.
You can barely identify Penny’s laid down figure over the brim of the dimming light emanating from the candle on the desk. If anything, it makes her look even more beautiful to you.
“Yet, you are not.”
“You aren’t either.”
“You should’ve drank the tea, it had valerian root.”
You wrinkle your nose in distaste. As long as your britishness is concerned, you cannot recognize other tea than Earl Grey, even if your life depended on it. As for Penny, there is no day she does not surprise you.
You cast a silencing charm under your breath.
“I don’t trust these people.” You confess lightly.
I don’t trust myself or why I allowed you to tag along, is an addition that remains on your lips. Other than anger, guilt has taken a permanent spot on your stomach.
You feel Penny move closer to you before whispering your name. The tip of the fingertips of her nearest hand interlaces with yours.
“Do you trust me?” she is so close you can feel the hotness of her breath over the humid air.
“Yes,” it is a certain truth, “do you trust me, Penny?” your eagerness betrays you. Your decision-making has disappointed you, and you fear, Penny as well.
“You are one of the most talented sorcerers I have met, of course I trust you.” She pauses, “it is my decision to be here, okay? Please, don’t fret about it. We’ll figure everything out. Like always.”
Your pounding heart finally comes to a lull as you feel your stomach relax instantly at her words. It is almost as if she has been reading your thoughts all along, she knows you that well.
You get a glimpse of her tender smile as you see the light finally wane into total darkness. Her warm hand, however, remained over yours, right until slumber finally befell you.
.
.
.
Tall brightly colored buildings surround you. It is nothing like you ever seen before. You don’t know why but a raising feeling of panic quickly takes over you. You are following someone, or is someone is chasing you, you are not quite sure. The tall brick structures are separated, only, by narrow and dark alleyways, making it feel like a maze.
You look up only to see towering smoke intertwining with the dark sky. You hear shouting in the vicinity, your wand is firm on your hand, ready.
Are you looking for someone? Why do you feel so panicky?
Someone crashes into your shoulder with force, almost knocking you into the floor.  Bony hands grab you by the shoulders only to go into a fervent rant.
“Isso é culpa da Macumba! Corra ou morra! É uma maldição!”
.
.
.
A light shake on your shoulder wakes you from your slumber. You open your eyes blearily to meet a mane of bright straw colored hair. Penny is kneeling over you, her usually braided hair combed into a bun.
You want to smile at her but your body feels unusually clammy, as if you’d been coated by the thick saliva of a Cerberus.
“Maria told me to get you, we are leaving soon.”
Your throat feels unusually dry despite the humidity. You can even feel your white shirt pressing against your chest nastily. The thought of using Aguamenti on yourself crosses your mind briefly.
“Thank Merlin.” Your skin is not used to tolerating climates like these.
You take a fast look around to notice the room as empty as you found it. The wooden desk with an extinguished candle on the corner. Penny’s blanket neatly folded beside you. You look up to find Penny handing you your traveling cloak, folded as well, and with an unusual soapy smell.
“I might’ve scourgified it.” A light blush graces Penny’s cheeks before she leaves the room with a quiet, ‘hurry up’.
The image of what domestic life with Penny would be like pushes the recent memory of your dream on the back of your head as you decide on a change of clothes under your recently washed traveling cloak. It is a bit embarrassing for you to accept, you have completely forgotten the last time you had cleaned it yourself.
You exit the room to find Maria and her assistant, Nicolau, packing the last of their herbs and flowers into a big rectangular trunk. You share a scowl with an anxious looking Penny, who quickly reaches your side.
“Where is Rakepick?”
As far as you are concerned, your alliance to her, your mentorship, has suffered an important blow. You never really trusted her, not really, but suddenly abandoning you in the middle of nowhere with strangers didn’t look too good in your book.
“Paty is doing a Portkey, we been waiting for you. We cannot wait more and not compromise the mission.” Maria’s calm answer contrasts to your briskness.
You see her draw a golden pocket watch from under her green cloak. You notice it is not much different from Rakepick’s own, if not the same. As in on cue, one of the white porcelain teacups you had drank from just a night before starts to glow a intense blue hue.
“We have to leave now."
"One.”
You share glances with Maria.
“Two.”
You and Penny share glances.
There really is no other choice. Remain the middle of the Amazon or find out what exactly are you doing in Brazil. You can’t help but give her a lopsided grin. Sometimes, you can be really dense. And forgiving. And naive. And trusting. If something is ever going to get you killed is your sense of adventure and curiosity.
“Three.”
You see Penny reach for the teacup with you before you feel the now familiar feeling under your navel. Your stomach churns on an empty stomach and unforgiving bile. It is not much different from the adrenaline pump you feel everytime you ride over a broom at max speed. Your thrill for the unknown might one day be your great dismissal.
Not today.
A/N: I'm sorry for the delay. Real life got in the way. I had my very own end of the (school) year promotion, and also fell sick. I wrote all of these on off chances I had at work, mostly. Hopefully, it won't show. Happy reading! And off to action we go on the next chapter! Remember you can also find it in Ao3. Link on my fanfiction masterlist.

☢ BASICS:
Nome: Misha Clark Idade: 25 Ocupação:  Médica | Caçadora FC:  Nina Dobrev
❝ The only way to get rid of a shadow is to turn off the lights and run fast in the darkness. This is how you face fear.❞
☢ STORY:

These are some examples of the way that Zumbi dos Palmares and other leaders of slave rebellions are celebrated alongside black civil rights leaders as role models in Northern Brazil. The first three images are from fabric for the carnival group Iye Aye, headquartered in Salvador. The words “Zumbi will always reign” runs down the center of the fabric. I believe that this pattern was designed by the artist J. Cunha, and it is displayed at the group’s community center and drumming school. The latter three images are from the Black Cultural Center of Maranho, which has, as one of its stated goals, raising the self-confidence of Black Brazilian school children.

Brazil’s Maroon State
For nearly a century, Quilombo of Palmares was an Afro-Brazilian state, populated and run by people who had freed themselves from slavery.

Brazil is the fifth most populous country in the world, so perhaps it’s not surprising that the country has a complex racial history. For instance, how many Americans know that there was an Afro-Brazilian state, made of those who had freed themselves from slavery, for almost a century?
The last leader of this community, known as Quilombo of Palmares, was Zumbi. Not a lot is known about Zumbi, including whether “Zumbi” was even his real name, and yet he remains a powerful figure in Brazilian historical consciousness. Scholar Robert Nelson Anderson writes in his overview of the history of this maroon enclave, “for many Brazilians, especially those of African descent, Zumbi embodies the strongest resistance to the slave-based colonial regime and, consequently, the struggle for economic and political justice today.”
Beginning in the early seventeenth century, self-emancipated Africans “made their way to the interior and there established a mocambo, or maroon settlement, of some reputation.” As more and more people were captured and kidnapped from Africa, there were more of these free settlements, because flight was the main way of escaping slavery. (Of the 12.5 million Africans shipped across the Atlantic, 5 million were taken by Portuguese slavers.) Maroon settlements dotted the Americas, including in the Caribbean. But Palmares, a united collection of mocambos, also known as quilombos, was one of the largest, best organized, and most defended.
To slavers, maroonage represented an existential threat. Palmares was doubtless especially distressing to the slavers, since as a self-administering community of settlements, it provided a clarion call for others to escape bondage. In response, the Portuguese attacked Palmares again and again throughout the mid-seventeenth century. The Palmarinos fought back, including raiding plantations to free more of their enslaved brothers and sisters.
