Long service award. We celebrated all those who reached important milestones here at the company. Around 12 people were celebrated, with various milestones up to 30 years. I gave them a certificate and cold hard cash. 💰 💵 Did productivity increase? Not at all. Did their happiness increase? Yes. Did my happiness increase? Yes 😃 Am I doing it for happiness? No. It’s because I believe loyalty and should always be rewarded. My bottom line is not money. It is doing the right thing. I hopped on a plane and rode on a ferry to go to Indonesia last week. The purpose was to visit a friend doing some really good work with the people there. I cannot share much except two equally important reflections: 1. How do we pray for and sustain people like him in the field? 2. I ate this dish called ayam penyet (smashed chicken). How does one smash chicken? Why is it called “smashed” in English when penyet is Javanese for “squeezed”? Are the chicken intoxicated there? Our company did the first annual dinner at a restaurant since the pandemic started. In addition to good food, we had a lucky draw event where everyone received red packets of varying amounts of money. Looking at them receive the red packets and listening to the laughter in the room made me very happy. I am the boss of a small manufacturing business. Myth: Many people think it means I make lots of money and sit in a luxurious office drinking tea all day. Reality: I draw a normal salary and sometimes work with operators at the assembly line until late at night to complete urgent orders. My hands are all grease today. Including the commute, I am “at work” 11 hours most days, 13+ hours today. Even at home, I am thinking about the factory, except when I am doing my “other” job of preaching/mission/ministry/parenting. Why? Responsibility. Leading from the trenches. I was privileged to share a message about money, economy, and COVID-19 at the recent SACYN (South Asia Christian Youth Network) conference. 25 or so young leaders from ~6 countries and several churches gathered in Malaysia to learn, grown, and fellowship. The best part of my session was not my message, but the sharing of each young leader, speaking about their own church contexts. It was encouraging to hear about the various ways their churches handled the economic crisis due to the pandemic. This fellowship is breaking down the barrier between churches, allowing greater Christian unity in the propagation of the gospel and the betterment of our world. Kudos to Stephen Edison and many others who organized this from behind the scenes. P.S. I made a new friend at a hotel gym. He is my first spotter in Malaysia. He is a 59 year old man from the Philippines. He is huge! I told him (and the rest of his family) that I want to be like him when I turn 59. I now have a standing invitation to visit them in Manila. It started as me buying snacks and singing Happy Birthday for everyone. I wanted to raise the morale of the company employees. I wanted to build a culture of teamwork and thanksgiving. Last month, a seasoned employee bought lunch for everyone (out of her own pocket). Yesterday, a newer employee bought expensive cake from Bread History to treat everyone. People sang, laughed, and ate. It was wonderful. Sociologist Peter Berger speaks of internalization as the last moment in the dialectical process of socio-cultural world building. Others call this appropriation. Point is, after 7 months of trying, I am starting to see this phenomenon happening. In simpler terms, people are starting to own this new culture of teamwork and thanksgiving. I am so proud of our team. However well or poorly our company revenue may be, I can be happy knowing that I have made a little difference in their lives. I am proud of my diverse team at Hightec. My company is in manufacturing. But I have been and always will be in the business of life transformation. P.S. Yes, PhD studies doesn't have to be just theoretical. Every morning, I do one set of handstand pushups, then I fill this 4.1L (1.08 gallon) monster bottle with water. I read my Bible. Then I drink in this water of life throughout the day.
