Jervisposting!!!
some notes on my Mad Hatter design
Jervis may look friend shaped but this is a two-sided coin— wait wait I mixed up the rogues. Anyway, I tried to design him both as "nice rabbit guy" and "creepy psycho guy". Depends on his mood, time of the day and some signals from wonderland or smth.

Meet The Facets: Jonathan Crane
Tumblr media
A poor soul if you ask others, Jonathan Crane is the representation of Jon's past and trauma. From birth to college is his domain, and an unfortunate one at that. Memories of beatings from his father, bullying from his peers, and a serious drug problem all plague his every waking moment. One of these things still persists in the present day, and it isn't the first two. Jonathan didn't believe the split was the truth at first, and sometimes he still wonders about it even if he knows it's fact. In spite of his issues, Jonathan is one of the more affable of the Facets. Maybe a coping mechanism, maybe a tactic, maybe it's just how he is. He's easy to make conversation with, even if those conversations can be full self-deprecation and dark humor. But most can still manage to find him charming and want to have a few more conversations just for the fun of it.
Jonathan manages to be horribly hedonistic alongside his own insecurities. His favorite methods of pleasure-seeking are also self-destructive beyond belief. It didn't take very long for him to engage in drug use to alleviate the anger from his first argument with Nygma, and the same goes for alcohol and smoking. The effects on his health are undeniable, even if he'd really like to deny them.
Jonathan is a slipfast man outside of his social nature. While able to navigate conversations and interactions with ease, the wish to be able to just disappear is one he'll always have. He'd love to understand and absorb what happens with others without them doing the same for him, but it's just part of his being that he'll always catch people's attention whether he wants to or not. Likes Dogs - Aside from crows, dogs are by far his favorite animal. He likes all animals, don't get him wrong. He grew up with many and he loved them all no matter how unique or strange that may seem to others. But dogs are pretty much hardwired to love people the way that Jon's crows love him, though that took much more work. Jonathan likes being strong enough to pick bigger dogs up and cradle them like babies.
Waffle House - He's a southern man to his core, and he'll always love Waffle House. He doesn't care if the food is "trashy" in the eyes of some(he means Ed), it'll always be good enough for him. He was already upset when he realized Jon had moved to New Jersey, and the lack of Waffle House only made it worse.
Parties - Tying in with being such a social butterfly and being a fan of drugs and drinking, parties are an area where Jonathan can really shine. He's got an arsenal of party tricks he'll show off and when he's done with those, it isn't hard for him to pick up a "friend" for the night if he wants to. Dislikes Rehab - Jonathan is sure any other addict would say the same. He remembers what rehab was like back when Jon was going through his addiction, and it absolutely sucked. The memories blend together after a while, since Jon very quickly learned how to avoid being admitted, but Jonathan remembers always feeling empty and tired and sobriety only lasting for a few weeks. He doesn't think he'll break that cycle with his second chance.
Scarcity - As a child, Jon was deprived of a lot. Friends, pets, good parents, love, care, food, water. Now that he's a grown man and far past those days, he's developed a distaste for being deprived of anything at all, even if it hurts him. Scarcity makes him nervous if it lasts too long and he's left wondering how long it'll last for.
Worry - Jonathan knows good and well what does and doesn't help him, he isn't stupid. Which is why he's always annoyed when someone tries to express any worry for him. It almost always ends with them offering help and solutions and saying he needs to stop doing something and he's sick of it. If he wanted to do any of it, he'd have done it. Meet The Facets: The Scarecrow
Tumblr media
The villainous persona of Jon, the Scarecrow hasn't changed very much since the split if you don't count the memory loss. He's still just as fear obsessed as before, now with complete and utter immunity to fear itself. Jon may have had a fucked up amygdala, but he still managed to get nervous around something he had a pervious phobia for. Scarecrow has no such weakness. He's also far more cruel, most of the empathy going to the Doctor and Jonathan. Scarecrow doesn't have none, but it's minimal as of now. Just as Riddler's cunning is a disadvantage for his foes, so is Scarecrow's intelligence. Jon was a very smart man, he got a PhD after all. You see it in both Crane and Scarecrow, just in different ways. While Crane specializes in picking apart his patients and trying to get to the source of what's wrong with them, Scarecrow just wants to know the ins and outs of fear. He'll even fear toxin the other Facets, though he thinks it's expected. Jon's findings on Ed are now useless with Ed split in three, and who knows if the other two Jons are immune to the toxin.
Since the split, Scarecrow has actually grown apathetic. There are things that interest him, that he cares about, that he likes or dislikes, but all of those things are specific and uncommon. He doesn't truly care for crime as much, now only doing it when he's bored or when he's dragged out by another rogue or few. He'd rather sit around with the crows. They're one of the things he cares about.
He values being able to make choices, but you can also find him feeling idlewild. Having choice stolen is one thing, but making a choice that puts you in a situation without is different. He's fine being stuck in a car or a train or a plane or just a line with nothing to physically do. Not only does it give him the freedom to take in his surroundings, but it gives him the chance to just think without worrying about his actions. Likes His birds - Scarecrow, contrary to what non-Gothamites may assume, does not scare crows. The birds love him, and the feeling is mutual. Jon accumulated a large flock over his years of villainy, and he memorized every single one of their names. While all the Jons remember Ichabod and everything about her, Scarecrow is the only one to know who all the others are from a first glance or caw.
Fear - He's the Scarecrow, what can you expect? Fear has always been his thing even since before Jon took on the moniker of Scarecrow. Maybe you can point to some childhood trauma to why he is the way he is, in fact it's extremely likely that that is the case. Doesn't mean he loves it any less. If Scarecrow could, he'd sustain himself on just the looks of fear he can get even without using his toxin.
Playing the fiddle - Unlike Doctor Crane, the Scarecrow does retain many of his southern roots. His accent, for one. Both Scarecrow and Jonathan are borderline unable to understand for most. But another is their love for music, and for Scarecrow that is the fiddle and old southern gospel and blues. He's one hell of a fiddle player, and it's not out of the realm of possibility to see him playing for his crows. Dislikes Assumptions - Not all of them, but a very specific type, that type being people assuming he's stupid. Scarecrow can be described as slightly more animalistic than the other two. He's still human, do not say otherwise, but his cruelty can make it seem not so. This makes people treat him as if his thinking and processing isn't on the level of normal people. He hates it, and it could earn you a face full of fear toxin on a bad day.
Nightmares - Scarecrow doesn't have any fears, but his mind still plagues him with visions and memories when he gets his inconsistent sleep. They always relate to his father, Elijah Crane. That man did many things to him over the years before his death, and Scarecrow inherited a good amount of that trauma like Jonathan did. He wishes he could just be safe in his sleep.
Arkham - It's not a unique opinion among the rogues or even just the regular inmates of the asylum. It sucks, in the fewest words possible. Scarecrow's least favorite part is Bolton. He and Crane are the same in that regard as well as their science. Bolton may target Crane because he's a safer option, he'll still taunt Scarecrow when given the chance. Meet The Facets: Doctor Crane
Tumblr media
Like Edward is to Ed, Doctor Crane is the civilian persona of Jon. He took on the professionalism that Jon had developed after being hired at Arkham after his teaching job, though Crane still remembers his teaching days. He'd go by Jonathan, but he's fine with going by Crane since Jonathan already took the name. Though maybe Crane needs to figure out something else to go by legally. His main goal once everything gets settled is to figure out how and why the split might've happened, and how to reverse it. He may not be like Edward with his constant checking in, but he is attentive. He has to be as a psychiatrist, but it transfers to his personal relationships as well. He isn't as warm or caring as Edward is, but he's usually the first to notice when something is wrong and just as quick to try and find a solution or way to help.
Hand in hand with his difference in care, Crane is quite cold. He doesn't mean to be, but it's become part of the façade that Jon developed over the years to do his job as effectively as possible. He needs to pay attention, but he can't let his emotions get in the way of things. It worked well for Jon up until Ed showed up, so who knows how it'll go for Crane.
Crane suffers horribly from occhiolism, the awareness of how limited your senses are. If there's one thing Crane hates it's not knowing things. He wouldn't call himself curious like Eddie is, but he doesn't like being left in the dark, which is what fuels his looking into the split. Being human puts him in a place where he will always not know something, will always only be peeping through the keyhole into the room of the universe. LikesAnalysis - Some say he's a workaholic, but Crane just thinks that it's they're fault they didn't decide to pursue something they like doing. He doesn't remember liking work this much as Jon, but he's not one third of that man so he'll just say that's the reason. He likes picking things apart to figure them out and know them on the deepest level, especially people.
Order - Crane is a lover of rules. They provide him routine and consistency that he just prefers innately. His running theory is that Jon liked it due to growing up in an unstable environment, but he wouldn't know for sure. The only two people in the house who remember Jon's childhood are both comfortable in their own instability.
Black coffee - Crane isn't the biggest fan of anything sweet or light, and he needs his daily caffeine intake. He's not as bad as Eddie, certainly not addicted, but he's one of those "Don't talk to me before I've had my coffee" types. Jon took his coffee the same way and Ed always hated it. Dislikes Mess - He's a complete opposite to Riddler. Riddler could have a working space not dissimilar to a hoarder's home and still be completely fine and know where everything is. Crane has been known to be on the verge of losing it just because a few things were out of place in a way that annoyed him just that much.
Pen/pencil tapping - Crane's focus can be very easy to break when it comes to sounds specifically. He understands that some people use tapping their writing utensil as a way to focus themselves, but he doesn't care. It annoys him horribly.
Lyle Bolton - Bolton has been a bother to Crane since before he was his own man. The guard turned warden was always interested in provoking Jon, under the impression that he thought himself better and needed to be taken down a peg. It wasn't as bad when he had the threat of Scarecrow coming after him, but now that they're separate people, that threat isn't there anymore. At least not for now. Meet The Facets: Eddie Nashton
The third Meet The Facets post, this time for our dear Eddie! He's the last of the Eds, and the next three will be all Jon.
Tumblr media
Eddie is the manifestation of Ed's younger years, which consists of the majority of his life. His memories stretch from childhood to a little bit after Ed graduated, though it gets fuzzy after graduation. He's most similar to Ed during said college years. He's awkward, pretty quiet, and has no idea how to handle people being around him. Eddie is the most curious out of the Eds. With only the life experience up to a freshly graduated college student, there's a lot of things he actually hasn't experienced. Many of the things he wonders about are in regards to the other five, especially the other two Eds since they mostly have memories that he doesn't have.
Due to Ed's friendless nature in college and his trauma, Eddie is incredibly anxious. He overthinks a lot, and Crane would have a field day trying to figure him out if Eddie let him. It clashes with his curiosity on occasion, his fear getting in the way of him of him seeking out information sometimes.
When it comes to a lot of his memories and experiences, Eddie ends up licotic in a way. He likes to share with people he gets close to, as does anyone, but his childhood and onwards wasn't exactly pleasant. It's not uncommon for him to only notice how severe the issues with the stories he tells are once he's telling them.
Likes Programming - One of Ed's earliest interests and what he pursued in college, Eddie was bound to like programming and everything to do with it. It's fun to him, and it's an easy way to get him to sit around if you tell him to go pursue his little hobby in some way. It's like baby sensory videos but for a 31 year old man.
Caffeine - Calling caffeine a like may be understating it. It's definitely understating it in Crane and Edward's eyes, they both say he's addicted to the stuff. Eddie has a severe sleep problem, a mix of a few things which includes his caffeine intake. There's always a non-zero amount of coffee cups and energy drink cans on his desk at all time.
Dark humor - Aside from the usual kind that doesn't include bigotry, Eddie's got a nice load of trauma he can pull from when it comes to the jokes he makes. Him and Jonathan are the absolute worst about it, and getting them in a back and forth is just sentencing yourself to laughing eventually. Dislikes Restrictions - Jackie Nashton put his son under plenty of rules growing up, many not making a lick of sense to an intelligent boy like Ed. This led to Ed having a whole time in his teens and 20s where he'd try his best to break the rules without getting in trouble just to spite his father. Now, Eddie still hates rules and regulations that don't make sense. Problem is apparently a lot of them don't make sense to him.
Pity/babying - A brand new issue for Eddie, completely unique for Ed or the other two thirds of him. Eddie may be 31 just like the other two, and he may have been around the longest as a part of Ed, but having ended with college made him look and act a little younger than the other two. That and his trauma make lead many to treat Eddie like a kid, and he hates it.
Sparkling water - He doesn't hate it necessarily but anytime he's drank it he immediately frowned. He once told Jonathan it was a phony and a liar of a drink and Jonathan still doesn't know what that means. Edward happens to love sparkling water, which is one of the few things they have to agree to disagree on. Meet The Facets: The Riddler
The second of the Meet The Facets posts to celebrate the posting of our fic! You can find the first one here and find the fic here.
Tumblr media
The Riddler is Ed's villainous persona. The glitz and glam, the blood and fun, the showmanship, he's got it all. He had no qualms going right back into his life of crime with his henchladies Echo and Query at his side. He's actually the youngest of the Eds if one goes by how long they've existed as part of him. Don't bring up how Eddie is older than him and looks 20-something, he'll lose it. A problem for many, Riddler is extraordinarily cunning. He has to be in his line of work, but even among the rogues he's a stand out in that category. It's led to his psychiatrists(Crane pre-split and someone else post) struggling to get him to work with them at all because he knows how to work around them.
He'd disagree if you said it, but his fatal flaw may be his arrogance. In his opinion it's perfectly justified, he is the best after all. But there are many times it's been to his detriment, whether it be it leading him to be easily manipulated through it or him experiencing a horrible crash when something doesn't align with his confidence.
While Crane managed to pick apart some things about him during their brief time before Riddler's psychiatrist got switched, his exulansis was not one. It doesn't take long for Riddler to make foes out of the rest of the Facets, and even when this changes, he doesn't think they'll ever get him in the ways he wants. Restricting the topics he talks about makes it easier to believe he didn't give up. Likes Praise - It goes along with his arrogance and narcissism, but it'd be present without them. Riddler feels like the greatest man alive, and while he doesn't need anyone to tell him so, he absolutely loves it when they do. It does wonders if he actually respects the person who says it.
Chaos - He's a rogue, what can you expect? His love for it doesn't just translate to his crime, but it also presents itself in his personal life. Edward will never get over the mess that is his room. Riddler calls it organized chaos, Edward calls it a travesty.
His paintings - While Edward took up Ed's photography, Riddler took up art. He especially likes to paint. He knows he's good at it, and he's even painted the Facets a few times when they're willing to sit still and model. He always refuses to show them the final product, and they don't know where he keeps them. Dislikes Abandonment - Most may frame it as him being an attention whore like usual, but Riddler doesn't even like to entertain the thought of being abandoned. Maybe because it means he might be undesirable, maybe because he truly does crave human connection deep down.
Jackie Nashton - Eddie may have inherited the brunt of Ed's trauma, but Riddler still has some memories of his own relating to Jackie. He doesn't like the man, and he's glad that Ed let him die out in his hospital bed with no closure. Just means Riddler won't have to deal with him again. Hopefully.
Textures - He's picky when it comes to the textures of things. He's thankful that Ed picked a good tailor before the split, otherwise whoever they had would've surely gotten tired of his constant nagging and complaints about this fabric or that because it has some weird issue with how it feels. Meet The Facets: Edward Nygma
It's been a whole day and some since our fanfic The Facets of Man was posted to AO3, so now starts the posts about the Facets!
Tumblr media
Edward Nygma
Edward is the representation of Ed's civilian persona at the time of the split. He's a millionaire, a narcissist, and all around fanciful bastard. He's a clean freak and definitely obsessive when it comes to keeping everything nice and tidy, especially once the Facets move into the manor. He's unwillingly paternal when it comes to people younger than him, or at lease those he perceives to be younger than him. Take Eddie, who just had to look like a younger version of him and it made something click in his head.
He's generally fussy about the people he cares about. Once he gets attached enough, he's constantly checking in them in the areas he thinks they don't pay enough of attention to, whether it be health, hygiene or anything else.
He's got a bad case of koinophobia, the fear of being ordinary. Now that he's no longer sharing a life with the Riddler, it's hit him that the biggest interesting part about himself is no longer himself, so he'll do a lot to make this worry go away. Likes Organization - As stated, he's a clean freak, and with that comes being a neat freak. He likes it when everything is in his proper place, and he hates it when that isn't the case. He tries to contain this feeling to his own space, but it doesn't always work out Photography - Out of the many hobbies Ed took up over the years, this was Edward's favorite. He wouldn't be able to tell you why he likes it so much, but if you ask us it started as an effort to have memories of the Facets around if they ever do find out how the split happen and end up reversing it. Sweets - It's a guilty pleasure. He has a whole thing with his calorie intake that Doctor Crane says is very unhealthy, but he can't help it when it comes to sweets sometimes. He's taken to just avoiding them. He can't even look at the candy aisle without being tempted Dislikes Horror - Unfortunately for him, having pretty none of the memories of Ed's time and actions as the Riddler made him revert heavily to the state of mind Ed had before he even considered something as tame as murder(tame in Riddler's standards, anyways). He gets queasy when it comes to horror. Riddler also happens to not like horror, he just doesn't have the urge to puke. Spicy food - Edward has absolutely no spice tolerance. He just can't handle it. He's sure that if Ed ever had any, it either disappeared over time and therefore Eddie has it, or it got thrown to Riddler. Either way, Edward has none and he suffers for it. Stress - This one is technically obvious, who likes stress? Edward just has a unique hatred for it. Sure, he hates the feeling in general like everyone else. He also hates that he remembers Ed having gotten a few grey hairs do to it. He will never let that happen again. Ever.

One thing about the fear toxin that still got Jon was fucking up his lungs. Sure, he doesn't go under and imagine whatever he might be afraid of, but over time breathing it in definitely gave him a diabolical smoker cough. It is one of the many things that reminds people he's an old ass man because you can't deny it when you hear him coughing up a lung from multiple rooms away

I'd love to use the insert link feature to expose our baby to the world but Tumblr refuses so!
The Facets of Man Jonathan Crane and Edward Nygma might have been in love. And they might've even gotten married, if they weren't so rudely split up into six by unknown assailants.
The Facets of Man: Supplemental Reading
Can't get enough of the Facets? Come on over and read some short stories that chronicle the tales of Jonathan Crane and Edward Nygma as they navigate their new split lives. -- These short stories will take place in the same world as the fanfiction "The Facets of Man" written by sakurafever. I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading the original fic first. The supplemental reading you see here is intended as worldbuilding and extra fun stories for that fanfiction.

Before the shutdown of his amygdala, Jonathan was afraid of butterflies. It was far from rational, having stemmed from yet another horrible thing his father did to him, but it was present. After his amygdala shutdown, they still made him uncomfortable to be around. Which wasn't the best when his boyfriend had a thing for plants that attracted butterflies en mass. Edward came around to loving the crows, but Jonathan doubted he'd ever like those bugs.
