Everyone talks about how Arthur finds out, but have you ever thought about after the magic reveal?

The calm after the fights, and them finding normal again.

The casual magic use to keep bath water warm, or to summon his armor from across the room. The casual flick of the wrist to light a candle, and the reverence on Arthurs face that Merlin just barely catches before it's gone.

Arthur wanting to know how he got every bruise.

Every cut.

Every scar.

Merlin having to sit with Arthur as he realizes how much he's done for him. To tell him it was done out of love and loyalty.

Arthur keeping his secret with him. Afraid even his own knights would find out. Yes they're loyal, but this is Merlin, and he'll not risk it.

But despite all of the perils, and hardships, they find a new level of trust and comfort within each other that was not there before. Arthur seeks out Merlins touch more, and in return, Merlin is more giving with his words of encouragement and reassurance. They find peace.

When Arthur returns, Merlin brings him back to his little cabin in the woods. Arthur is suprised at what he finds when he steps inside.

Drawings. Dozens and dozens of drawings. All of him. Or, he thinks they're of him. They're all done in different mediums. Charcoal, pencil, marker, paint. Each one is so close to his own face, but just different enough to be wrong. He walks through the room lightly touching one that looks the closest to his likeness.

"I was trying to remember." came a whisper from behind him. "It's been so long I could no longer see you clearly in my mind...."

Oh.

"Are you really here? You're not going to dissappear?" Merlin continues quitely, speaking his fears into the space between them.

"I'm here Merlin. No more waiting. I'm here and I'm not leaving."

It just keeps happening.....

Merlin doesn't know if he wants to stop it, or if he should? And the worst part is Arthur doesn't even notice he's kissed him.

First time:

After dinner, Merlin cleared the plates, then returned to ready the royal clotpole for bed. After making sure he was dressed in his sleep shirt, Arthur simply leaned down and gave him the lightest kiss, turned and started getting into bed, saying goodnight. He could see the moment it clicked in Arthurs head, yet he just kept going. Merlin excused himself and the next morning nobody mentioned it.

Second time:

Before his tournament match against sir chamberlain, Merlin was putting on his armor.

"Please Arthur. You need to listen. Be quick. Don't underestimate him. I watched him train." Merlin pleaded.

Arthur leaned in and cut off any further words with a kiss. "I'll be fine love. Now hand me my sword."

In a daze Merlin retrieves the sword and hands it off, turning back to Around seeing on his face that he again knows what he's done. They need to talk about this but not now. Not before he goes out there. So Arthur nods once, and walks out of the tent.

3rd time :

Duke Bohun would not leave him alone. Everywhere Merlin looked, there he was. Honestly it wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't so handsy. The amount of times that Merlin has had to subtly remove himself from groping range is getting out of hand. He's just glad Arthur hadn't seen...... Or well, was glad.

The Duke was seated next to Arthur at the farewell banquet, which meant that while Merlin was ensuring that Arthurs cup was always full, Lord Bohun would have plenty of grab time.

Maybe if he approached from the other side?

As the night wore on, and the wine seated in their stomachs and minds, it also loosened their lips.

"That is a lovely man servant you have there. I don't suppose you'd lend him to me for a night? I promise I'd return him just as I received him." Duke Bohun slurred while leering in his direction.

"Lord Bohun, I don't know how things are done elsewhere. But here in Camelot our servants are people, not objects. We do not give them away, nor lend them for a night." Arthur could feel himself getting more and more angry with every word.

Before the situation could escalate further Merlin out a gentle hand on Arthur shoulder.

Taking that as a sign, Arthur took a deep breath. " If you'll excuse me, I think it's best that I retire for the night." he turns to his man servant "Merlin"

"Coming sire"

No sooner are they in the hall does Arthur have Merlin against a wall and locked in one of the most passionate moments he's ever experienced. Arthur is holding Merlin like he might lose him.

Slowly they part. Merlin strokes the back of Arthurs head gently. As soon as their breathing returns to normal, Arthurs entire body tenses in realization.

Merlin, instead of getting mad gently lifts his head to look at him. They stare intently. He can see how scared Arthur is.

Merlin leans forward, and for the first time, he kisses him.

"It's okay." he gently tugs on the hair on the back of his head. Not hard. Just enough to show that he's in the moment with him.

Arthur smiles.

Arthur: You're gonna have to understand that you're with a guy who's not gonna stop planning his future with you because he knows that we're gonna end up together and if that scares you, tough, 'cause you're gonna have to deal with that.

Merlin: Fine, I will.

Arthur: Good, 'cause I love you.

Merlin: Oh yeah.

Arthur: Yeah.

Merlin: Well I love you too.

Arthur: *Still in his angry * That's the first time we've ever said that!

Merlin: Yes!

Arthur: I'm gonna kiss you!

My 12 year anniversary at work happened recently. So what do we do? Celebrate with merthur obviously. Thank you @cultivateme for making this wonderful cake!

Does anyone else think about how Arthur gets upset when the visiting nobles pay just a little too much attention to Merlin?

As a sign of respect Uther lends the prince's servant to the visiting Duke. Arthur doesn't want too, but his father doesn't give him a choice. He can make due with one of the other servants, and Merlin is to attend to their visitors.

Arthur spends the next 3 days watching the Duke stand just a little too close, put his hands on Merlins shoulders, and stare when he thinks nobody is looking. Poor Merlin looks as if he's going to jump out of his skin. Sending alarmed glances at Arthur.

By the third night Arthurs just about had enough. He's tired of strange people in his chambers. He's tired of having to dress himself, because no way does he want to be touched by people he doesn't know. But most of all he's tired of being alone. He's grown accustomed to Merlin always being one step behind him, laughing, smiling, and backtalking him. He hasn't seen Merlin truely smile since the Duke arrived.

As the Duke's carriage was prepared for his departure that evening, Arthur stood at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for Merlin to finish loading his luggage. As soon as the last bag was secured, Arthur, having already said his goodbyes, grabs Merlin by the back of the neck and steers him inside the castle. Merlin goes willingly, melting into the touch.

After a short walk, they reach Arthurs chambers. The door is shut and secured, and finally Arthur feels at peace. Merlin is back in his space where he belongs, and nobody is coming to take him.

They make eye contact. Neither speaks. Merlin slowly embraces Arthur, sliding his hands into his hair. Everything is okay.
