Shades of Gray - A Gray bellied Cuckoo - a brood parasite which uses warblers as their hosts. A very noisy species with a persistent and a loud call. Greater Coucal Mating - The arrival of monsoon rains in India is an annual milestone for the country. The blustery winds, loaded skies and torrential rains are signs of a good year not just for farmers and economists but also for the very many avian species seen here. The onset of the rainy season is a sign for the beginning of their seasonal nesting. However, shifting seasons and unseasonal monsoon conditions have been affecting these cues for nesting. Study shows that altered cropping and rainfall patterns are responsible for unseasonal nesting. Many bird species are advancing the timing of their egg-laying in response to a warming climate, affecting the length of the breeding seasons. Migratory species require suitable conditions throughout their annual cycle: on their breeding grounds, in their non-breeding range, and along migratory routes between the two. A Pink Affair - Greater Flamingo - they are now a resident birds of these mudflats in and around Bhindawas and Najafgarh lakes. But lets understand how their role in the Ecosystem - Greater flamingos consume large amounts of aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and algae and likely has a large impact on those populations. Flamingos feed in shallow bodies of water, and often use their large feet to stir organisms from the bottom up into the water column. This activity likely contributes to sufficient oxygenation and mixing of organic material within these bodies of water and aids in avoiding anoxic conditions. With the monsoons already making an entry into the heartland of India, the monsoon birds have began showing their colors. The call of the Koel has now given way to the call of the cuckoo's - the Eurasian Hawk, Indian and the ubiquitous Jacob in or Pied Cuckoo(in the picture along with Indian Cormorant). Lore believes that the Pied Cuckoo is the rain bird that heralds the beginning of the monsoon. When the first Pied Cuckoo of the season is spotted, the rains cannot be far behind. . With the rains, the birds that are scattered everywhere congregate near the waterbodies for feeding upon fish, amphibians, crustaceans and insects that come out of their aestivation hideouts. Soon after the rains, the insects also breed extensively and their larvae spread everywhere to feed upon the plants. During this period, a number of birds start building their nest and breed. The reason for monsoon breeding is the availability of insects and their larvae or caterpillars for the young ones. . How interesting is this Life's Cycle? World Turtle Day is observed every year on May 23 with the purpose of increasing attention and knowledge about turtles and tortoises. World Turtle Day is observed every year on May 23 with the purpose of educating people about the things that they can do to protect the habitats of turtles and tortoises. It is also a celebration of the joy that these reptiles bring to so many people on a daily basis. . The National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary is perhaps the only site in India which houses some of the critically endangered species. . The critically endangered Red-crowned roofed Turtle (shown in the picture) is found here and so is the Gharial, Indian Skimmer or the Gangetic Dolphins. This is also the place were we can find 7 other rare species of Turtles including Indian narrow-headed softshell turtle, three-striped roof turtle and crowned river turtle. . With too much at stake, the Govt has already declared this site as a Sanctuary and it is a proposed Ramsar site. But unfortunately the political patronage of sand mining or other forms of damaging the area are rampant. . Discovered this fabulous trail.. Just 30km outside likes Teekli and beyond is this fabulous spot in the Aravallis. This is a good hiking and walking trail in the Aravalli. And, unbelievable is there are Sand dunes as well hills all around. It is still a virgin area, tough a road leads to the Gaushala and after that is plain greens and jungle... The name sounds interesting... though I did not come across any.. Maybe some other day. This is a highly endangered bird, the "Indian Skimmer" - the name given because it skims the water surface through the highly specialized beaks for its food. . Very recently (Dec'20) this bird was seen in a creek in the Kakinada coastline (very uncommon sighting) and The Hindu came out with an article on it. The AP Postal department released a Special cover saying - “There is a great need to conserve the habitat of the Indian Skimmer in India. The Department of Posts, Andhra Pradesh, has decided to release a special cover after The Hindu published an article on the bird’s breeding activity and population and Kakinada becoming its prime habitat,” . Indian Skimmer is listed as a ‘Endangered’ species on the IUCN Red List but its population is undergoing a rapid decline due to widespread degradation and disturbance of lowland rivers and lakes. India holds the only known remaining breeding grounds for this species and the National Chambal Sanctuary (NCS) is one among very few locations in India that hosts significant breeding populations of Indian skimmer. But that is also in danger with the many water extraction devices being setup downstream. . Very important that we identify and setup other breeding sites for this bird like the one in Kakinada - there is one site on the Mahanadi in Odisha. Initiatives like the one by AP Postal department are ways of getting the public awareness increased. .
