Posted @withregram • @goodwinenyc: We hope everyone had a #HAPPYJUNETEENTH wknd & continue to celebrate many FREEDOM themed holidays the rest of the Summer & calendar yr! We’re so proud to shoutout our very own multi-talented GoodWine team member, culinary historian, Tonya Hopkins a.k.a “T Hop!” (@TheFoodGriot) who provided awesome #Juneteenth food (& drink!) #history & cultural context on @goodmorningamerica! on #NATIONALTV - again! this past Fri #June19th! -- in support of our fab friend & fantastic Chef @carlaphall’s live #cookingdemo of dynamic dishes for this historic date — that's gaining global awareness given it's significance, symbolism & timeless relevance ...[SWIPE LEFT TO SEE PHOTO COLLAGE] . . “Juneteenth” (colloquial for "June 19th") is a uniquely American holiday celebrating the #emancipation of #BlackAmericans who were enslaved in the 13 colonies (& later the US) for centuries. It commemorates a specific date (June 19, 1865) when the Union Army announced federal orders in Tx proclaiming that all slaves (there & elsewhere in the South) had been freed. News which arrived nearly 3 yrs AFTER the #EmancipationProclamation was signed by Abe Lincoln January 1st 1863. Also known as #FreedomDay, #JubileeDay #LiberationDay or #EmancipationDay in regions thruout the nation (incl. the North!) where enslaved people were emancipated at diff times/dates in history — yet continue(d) the fight for basic Human & #CivilRights up to this very day . . It may or may not also come as a surprise that beyond other key culinary roles #AfricanAmericans were among the most notable yet unrecognized #winestewards from our nation's earliest days & onward ... (more on that later for a future online class perhaps!) So whether you make Carla’s slammin #watermelon #strawberry slushy (#Juneteenthrecipes featured Fri available on GMA’s site). We don't have to tell you that we’ve also got the #PERFECTWINES to pair w/ those delish dishes too! Ask any of our staff as always for some really #GOODFOOD pairing ideas — that's our thing here at The #FoodLover's #wineshop - Cheers!🥂 . . #pakslope #Bklyn #blackownedwineshop #blackwomanownedbiz (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBuYwFqDXL6/?igshid=1nlvzlqizwh9w

Episode no. 2 which I wrote & we produced in August is up on the @thephiladelphiacitizen site! (click link in bio above to hear!)...The history of pepper pot soup, consumed (from a can) by millions of Americans throughout the 20th C,, does not begin w/ #AndyWarhol’s famous canned soup paintings (“Pepperpot” sold for a record $11.6 million) or at #Camden’s @campbells soup co or via a white (German-born) soldier in #GeorgeWashington’s army at #ValleyForge (credited for centuries as its creator). #Pepperpot originates in W. Africa, evolves in the #Caribbean and became #Philadelphia’s 1st official #signaturedish, made and sold as “smoking hot” servings by entrepreneurial #blackwomen on Philly’s waterfront streets from the #colonialera up to the eve of the 20th C. Embrace a more inclusive, true story of #PhiladelphiaPepperPot — I even have a #DELICIOUSrecipe for you there too! And an @abcthechew video where u can see me making it! ... Special shoutout to Chef @sogoodtv of @goodwinenyc for her prof recipe writing skills ‘cause erribody who knows me know I #THROWDOWN but I am NOT a recipe cook... Speakin a throwing down — ❤️felt shoutout to my beautiful cuz @saffronrougecatering who makes a cameo in this episode (my Mom 💕does too but she ain’t on IG ;) & to the esteemed @drjessicabharris who not only makes an audio appearance but 1st directed my eyes to see Philly as a northernmost #creole city many moons ago when i saw her speak at The Chef Fritz Blank Culinary Archive & Library at my alma mater @uofpenn in #WestPhilly... yrs later in 2014 dear friend & brilliant babybro #MichaelTwitty (@thecookinggene) schlepped to bklyn w/ a duffel bag full of heavy books for me to ref & use for my #historicdinner honoring chef AnneNorthup (wife of #SolomonNorthup / #12YearsASlave at @morrisjumel mansion where she lived & cooked in the 1840’s in her husband’s absence. Among those mobilized books were @a_taste_of_history Chef Walter Staib’s #CityTavern Philadelphia cookbook w/ a 300 yr old pepperpot recipe — that u hear about in this episode... How did YOU #celebrate 🍦 #NationalIceCreamMonth 🍨? Still celebrating? You’ve got a few days left to indulge! Or you can just listen to my 1st #MiniPodcast #episode all about ice cream’s (barely known) origins in #America. It’s under 10 min long — a short, semi-sweet story that blends back in essential (18th-19th C.) black chefs & culinary pros who made American ice-cream the amazingness that it is today…CLICK (Or Copy & Paste into your browser) THE LINK HERE: https://thephiladelphiacitizen.org/foodizen-how-philly-invented-ice-cream-as-we-know-it/ TO LISTEN & ENJOY🍦! Then StayTuned for a fresh new episode focused on a diff topic each month — now through Dec 2019!….Thank You for listening, commenting — and for SHARING! ….So did you even know #July’s National #IceCream Month? With several ice cream-centric days all throughout: ~ “#Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day” on July 1st ~ “🍑 #PeachIceCream Day” on July 17th ~ “#IceCreamSodaDay🥤 Day” — July 20th ~ Actual “#NationalIceCreamDAY” was Sunday July 21st… ~ And “#NationalVANILLAIceCreamDay” on July 23rd… [For whatever reason — #CHOCOLATEicecreamday’s segregated over into the month of June. Early June (7th). Well #chocolateicecream DOES come onto the scene way before vanilla ice-cream, historically speaking. So that might be alright. I supppose. 😉] * * * * I’m honored to be the newest contributor to #Foodizen, @TheCitizen’s dive into the nexus of #foodandculture in cities. I record monthly #audiopieces re: #Americanfoodhistory — starting in #Philadelphia, “#BirthplaceofourNation”, via a “#uniquelyAmerican” lens — that of my heritage, as a descendant of both free and enslaved people, particularly those who were black/#Negro/colored/#AfroAmerican/#AfricanAmerican along the #timeline — who played such critical (too often unacknowledged) roles in every aspect of America’s #food& #drink industries * * * * * * * * * * I’m delighted to be collaborating on this imprtnt proj w/ @onWURD: PA’s ONLY black owned & operated talk radio station. ..And the most special of shoutouts to the Talented Team + their wonderful work at #MarketRoadFims: an indep prod co bringing evocative storytelling to unusual, otherwise untold stories; founded by 2X Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright @lynnnottage + Emmy Award-winning film director @tgerber63 (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0e_7smBLW5/?igshid=46e5lxow67f0

I just love workin wit these guys! (well — gals & guy!) and am so psyched to say HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY @harlemhops! Happy Homecoming weekend HH regulars and supporters! Erribody else — enjoy this fab 1 min video & then go celebrate them - yourself - life! with a wide range of high quality beverage options — the best beers anywhere of course, ciders, curated wines and creative cocktails— like the delicious (I’m told and agree;) @unclenearest premium whiskey batch cocktail I came up with for the special occasion using their award-winning 1856 premium aged whiskey + a few other secret-ish & not-so-secret ingredients...They’re calling it “MASTERFUL” - a tribute to Nathan Green (a.k.a “Uncle Nearest” by friends & family in 19th C Lynchburg Tennessee) — who was the first African-American Master Distiller on record. 100% of the proceeds of every one of the Masterful cocktails sold at Harlem Hops goes towards their nonprofit @harlemhopes scholarships fund in the hope that the young recipients go on to become masters of their own destinies. 🙌🏾👊🏾✊🏾. There’s so much more to the story behind this dope establishment, Uncle Nearest and this award-winning brand — and re: which cocktail ingredients I chose/choose to complement it— stay tuned for a mini TFG/HH cocktail book or sumthin that blends the historic research I conduct in conjunction with intended taste profiles for each drink I custom design... . . . . . . . . . . . #regrammed with #regrammer: “Come Celebrate Our 1 Year Anniversary June 7th-June 9th! “Harlem Hops Homecoming” #Harlemhops #Harlemhopes #HH1year #HBCU❤️ #Letsgocrazy #CAU❤️ #Hampton❤️#HarlemHopsHomecoming #HarlemHopsHomeCome Visuals: @gvifilms Soundtrack: @myahmoves”... #bestbeer #bestbeers #beer #cocktails #basil #TheMasterful to #NathanGreen #UncleNearest #Lynchburg #Tennessee) — #firstAfricanAmericanMasterDistiller #masterdistiller (at Harlem Hops) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByeGgWBhR4X/?igshid=sc5ndy4axaam

#Cooking’s my fave form of #creativeexpression (and coming up with #cocktails 🍸🍹...ok, and posting said creations on IG, oh and chattin ppl up #crackinjokes, lol)... Countless combinations of ingredients & #concoctions means there are many ways to make most dishes - and #dranks - as long as they’re #delicious! Shown here, for the @abcthechew show blk history month special segment taping I went #oldschool or “classic” (e,g #CarolinaGold, #blkeyedpeas, a #hamhock, #scallion, #bayleaf, #seasonings, #flava etc. etc.). But for the “#poispanther” version (see previous post) I got even more creative, really colorful, #cultural (and considerate!) by using #blackrice, blacker beans, vibrant red & green peppers 🌶 and smoked turkey in lieu of the oft controversial pork (that’s the considerate part), “and so forth and so on - you dig?” in celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth ✊🏾, the BIG ‘ol #BlackPanther #movierelease same day as this episode airdate 👊🏾and last but not at all least, the amazing #blackculinarylegacy we continue to share throughout #theAmericas and the #AfricanDiaspora at large...❤️🖤💚

It’s wonderful to see James being recognized for his talents and influence in the development of uniquely #Americancuisine ... he received his manumission (#freedompapers) from Jefferson in the first week of what would (over a century later) become “#BlackHistoryMonth” — on Feb 5th 1796 to be exact.... Checkout @jameshemingsorg and the website for more about his profound influence on the formation of early American #finedining .................. #Repost @thesaltyheifer with @get_repost ・・・ For Black History Month: “James Hemings was born in Virginia into the most famous family in American slave history, the Hemings clan. His sister Sally, enslaved companion and mother to several of Thomas Jefferson’s children is the most famous Hemings. Half brother of Jefferson’s wife Martha Wayles, James Hemings became the property of Thomas Jefferson at age eight. Hemings began his culinary training immediately, apprenticed to a traiteur (caterer) named Combeaux. Combeaux was hired to provide Jefferson's meal service during the first year of his stay in Paris. Hemings subsequently trained under Jefferson's female French cuisinière, while simultaneously taking classes from a master pastry chef. His most important training was under the chef of the Prince de Condé, in the kitchen at Chateau Chantilly made famous by legendary chef François Vatel. Chateau Chantilly was today’s equivalent of a Michelin five-star kitchen, its cooking considered superior to the food at Versailles. Many dishes like foie gras, whipped cream, French fries, ice cream and meringues while not created in this kitchen, became famous for being made there, and later adopted by the bourgeoisie. Hemings learned quickly and in 1787 became the chef de cuisine at the Hôtel de Langeac, which was Jefferson's private residence on the Champs-Elysées. The Hôtel de Langeac was America’s first diplomatic embassy. It was there that James cooked for royalty and the most discerning palates in France. James effortlessly supervised a large French kitchen staff, having mastered the language. #morningmotivation #blackhistory365 #heiferchronicles #whatthatsaltyheiferdo (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/Btz5ABfFVFY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wxwhk7k59yiu

#TBT a year ago today on 11/14/17 I made my debut on #TheChew! And apparently was the #firstandonly #foodhistorian featured on that 7 yr old #tvshow! My segments followed #WhoopieGoldberg (@the_real_whoopie) that day - who I got to meet briefly #behindthescenes! The producers asked me back on again in February of this year to talk about and make a special dish for #blackhistorymonth with #chefs @carlaphall & @chefsymon and @clintonkellyohb (we’ll save that savory story for a future TBT)…. Sadly @abcnetwork has since #pulledtheplug on this pioneering hybrid #food/talk #dailyshow. I and many others miss that pioneering daily food-filled show — and anticipate/ hope for something equally satisfying to fill its void…
