Review:
John Sugar, an equally disciplined and disturbed private eye searches for a missing granddaughter of the eccentric John Siegel. But as he delves further into the Siegel family, the more he becomes trapped in his own mind.
My commentary: UHHHHHHHHH?????
When Spiderverse came out, it sent ripple effects through the animation industry. It held other movies and companies to a higher degree, and we’ve got some incredible godchild movies thanks to that.
I would argue that it’s happening in the live action circuit as well, with tv shows such as the Bear coming out with top of the line dialogue and near surrealist beauty.
I watched this hesitantly, because well…private detective is sometimes overused. But Colin Farrell is undeniably mesmerizing, playing both a shy and charismatic man at times and immediately switching to this cold, sly figure from the noir movies he’s so obsessed with.
The cinematography is stunningly beautiful, with the shots being artistic and dramatic without sacrificing simplicity. If I could define this show as an action, it would be the silent exchange of two people. A glance that says “want to get out of here?” in a way so magnetic and instantaneous that you can’t help but nod.
It’s not done yet and I’m not sure where it will go, but even if it nosedives, I’d happily rewatch the current five episodes over and over again.
Also if none of that encouraged you, I didn’t think Colin Farrell was attractive and then I was like “hang awwwwnnnnn” I was giggling and twirling my hair when he was falling apart at the seams.

This song was so good I immediately became seduced by a woman who was really a ghostly figure who was once a cowgirl and she lured me out into the great wide wilderness and then buried me in an unmarked grave next to a tastefully placed longhorn skull.

Lucy reads the obituaries and visits the graves of all the dead agents when their parents didn’t bother to.
George leaves dinner out for the night watch kids and tries to find them jobs on his days off.
Lockwood stays in Jessica’s room for hours, rapier in his white knuckle grip, waiting for dusk. Fearful. Hoping. Dreading.

Tell me why I spent a whole week ogling the prince of skinny freaks himself, M.G. Gubler. I turn around and go right back to rewatching Reacher which led me to an epiphany.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The human Brick Wall could legit snap Goob’s spine like a pretzel dipping stick. But they are actually pretty evenly matched if they fought. Reacher is actually incredibly intelligent, and I feel like Reid is scrappy and would bite.
(Anyone who says they should kiss is getting a natures valley granola bar crumbled in their bed)

What makes a good poster?
So we’ve all seen some pretty bad movie posters. Typically the “triangle of floating heads” method, which is quick, easy, and effective if you have famous celebrities.
Tumblr media
But just by looking at this, it’s not a very good design. It’s a lot of beloved characters, slapped together and edited well, but it’s not memorable. Posters are advertising, their main goal is to be memorable.
So how do you make something memorable?
Three options.
One, which I’ll call the Inverted Everyday. This is the method of taking something extremely recognizable in everyday life and turning it on its head somehow.
Tumblr media
In this example, it’s the human silhouette, one of the most recognizable things in the world. This is an excellent poster because it conveys both the premise of the movie and it has simplicity to stand out and be remembered.
Your second option I’ll call the Reference Overlay. This is using a pop culture reference, such as art or literature to draw our eye. Most time it’s a Shakespeare quote, or a famous painting.
Tumblr media
This is a great example of that. It uses the reference (Adam reaching to God) correctly by using the same meaning: reaching out to the indescribable or unknown. Only in this case, alien and human touch, conveying that the film will explore alien/human interaction.
Your third and most difficult option is the Insistence Play, as in “insisting upon itself”. This is the method of using a scene or character from the movie that is instantly recognizable and memorable.
Tumblr media
It’s an iconic scene from an incredible film, so it can get away with this. The risk with the Insistence Play is that with an ensemble cast, or a movie series, it can quickly devolve into a triangle of floating heads. But it shouldn’t be ignored, just treated with a degree of caution.
So the next time you want a poster on your wall or you’re designing something for fun, that’s my quick and uneducated guide to movie poster design!

What’s funny about Lucy’s pov is it’s always so “sheltered Victorian woman”, like she sees his hand veins and loses her shit for four paragraphs, but I guarantee you she’s better than Lockwood
Lockwood’s POV:
She’s a really great sparring partner, her double knot maneuver was flawless and she’s such a great agent. Great thing I’m not attracted to her, that would screw my life up.
*Lucy pulls off her skirt to just wear her bike shorts*
*Lockwood has Thoughts for the next six chapters*
