After Dani saves Val’s life, Valerie lets Dani lead her to Phantom, and captures them both. Val delivers Danielle to Vlad Masters, and keeps Phantom locked up herself to extract information from him.

Phantom desperately tries to convince Valerie to help him save Dani by revealing the girl is half-ghost and half-human, able to change between the two forms at will. Valerie argues that if the girl’s spirit is trapped in this world, than Vlad is likely going to help her pass on to the next, which is a good thing. Phantom insists that Danielle is an alive human girl as well as a ghost, and eventually Valerie relents, giving into the potential guilt she would feel if she were to kill a human. She tells him that she will help him with this provided that he gives her all the information she wants on the Ghost Zone. Phantom agrees, having them stop by FentonWorks on their way to Vlad’s to pick up the Ecto-Dejecto.

They arrive at Vlad’s mansion in time to see Dani strapped to an upright examination table, Plasmius waiting for the two to arrive. They arrive to hear the larger ghost gloat that he will melt her down and learn from her remains. Phantom and Valerie engage Plasmius in a large fight, with Phantom quickly being taken out of commission, leaving Val to fight with Plasmius one-on-one. Despite Val’s best efforts, Plasmius is able to focus on Danielle long enough to start the machine she’s attached to, which electrocutes her until her form breaks up into sludge. Her screams summon Phantom back to the fight, and Valerie continues to draw Plasmius’ fire in order to give Phantom enough time to free Danielle.

Hearing yells from a nearby closet, Val frees Vlad Masters from where he is trapped in the laboratory. She feels vindicated and relieved that he isn’t the one doing these terrible things, and returns to her fight with Plasmius with renewed vigor. She is aware of Phantom injecting Danielle with something out of desperation, unable to release her from the table. Val keeps up her fight, filled with rage when Danielle melts into ectoplasm, all traces of human girl gone.

Her anger at Plasmius for killing a human girl causes her to fight more recklessly, and their battle quickly leaves the bounds of the building they are in. Once in the open air, Val is able to dispatch Plasmius, eventually sending him careening back down into the mansion. She hovers in the air, hit by a wave of exhaustion, but sees Danielle fly up from the mansion, whole and well. Valerie sees only her terrified expression as the girl flies away, and is struck with the realization that although she saved Danielle, she also delivered her to her doom in the first place.

Val remembers that she left Masters alone with Phantom, and rushes down to the ground to recapture Phantom. She sees Phantom arguing with the Mayor, and as she lands, Vlad tells her to let the ghost go for today. He says that there’s been enough fighting, and Valerie reluctantly complies. Vlad thanks her for saving him from Plasmius, and she returns home.

Over the coming months, Valerie does not think about the existence of half-ghosts. She does not think about the fear in Danielle’s eyes when they locked gazes. She does not think about Vlad Masters’ face as she approached his discussion with Phantom, how he looked at the boy with familiar condescension that couldn’t be true of the local ghost menace and her kind benefactor, and how Plasmius’ body wasn’t in the crater on the ground where she left it. She doesn’t think about how a ghost used to be a person just like her.

She does not think about these things. She doesn’t think about them for three long years.

She is not blindsided by Danny Fenton revealing his true identity in their senior year nonetheless.

She is not blindsided by him removing Vlad Masters’ human mask. She is not surprised to learn that her kind benefactor was manipulating her and her rage.

She is not surprised that she still dreams of terrified green eyes.

Valerie manages a strenuous four months at community college before she drops out. She doesn’t know how to explain it all to her father, kind and supportive, and doesn’t want to be in Amity Park. She doesn’t know what to do with herself, after everything she’s done. She mostly doesn’t do anything. She dreams of terrified blue eyes.

Her first exorcism was an accident. A facebook post about a ghost in an apartment downtown whose haunting was turning from mischief to malice. She showed up the next day, tired and not sure this would work, but certain that someone had to do something, and the Fentons were busy. Phantom was at college. It goes smoothly. She’s a natural.

She goes on the road less than a week later.

It’s better.

Each ghost she meets, she tries to help. A ghost used to be a person, and she doesn’t want people to look at her like she is the monster under their bed. She sells her service as an exorcist and knows that she is more of an under qualified grief counselor. She spends three years travelling the continent and not thinking about all of the things that press at her while she lays in dark motel rooms.

She’s in California when she recognizes Johnny and Kitty as the ghosts she’s been asked to get rid of. She gets them milkshakes and asks them to stop harassing the people who visit the pier. They shrug her off and tell her it was getting boring, anyway. She asks them how Amity Park is. They tell her it's fine, and that Phantom is back after graduating college, and that Danielle visited him.

She leaves.

She starts asking, then, every ghost she sees. She tracks Danielle down across years and miles. The halfa has carefully covered all of her tracks. Valerie wants to believe that she is hiding from Vlad, the man who tried to destroy her, but Danielle’s green eyes haunt her, and only one of them has returned to Amity Park.

Valerie has burned almost every bridge she’s ever crossed, and she doesn’t need a therapist to tell her its because of the day she handed a girl to a monster and became one herself. She doesn’t need forgiveness. She would never ask for it.

She stands in front of the small house. The lights are on, and music is playing, and when Valerie knocks in the door, she is twenty-nine and fourteen all at the same time. She has pictured this moment in her mind for years: Danielle will open the door. Her eyes will be blue and terrified of her, and Valerie will say she is sorry and will live the rest of her life trying to help instead of hurt, and return to her truck to roam the roads once more.

The door swings open, and Valerie doesn’t know what to do when blue eyes look up at her curiously. He calls to his mother deeper in the home, and the smell of burnt meatloaf reaches Valerie’s nose as Danielle steps out from behind a wall with a toddler on her hip. Danielle gives her a polite smile. “Hi, can I help you?” Her eyes are blue and kind.

Valerie throws up on her doormat.

As I've alluded before, in green electric angels, Valerie is helping Danny deal with Vlad's evil plans only because Vlad is a greater and more immediate threat; no amount of bonding while Danny recovers from setting off a light magical explosion can make her forget he's likely to be the next unnatural, inhuman threat she'll be dealing with
