Naomi is actually an antagonist

Most people have different theories about Naomi from BSD, so I thought I'd put my opinion in.

First off, Naomi is NOT an author like the rest of the BSD cast. Her namesake comes from Jun'ichirō Tanizaki's novel 'Naomi'. I'm going to be speculating about the connection between the novel and the BSD character, but I actually haven't read the novel myself. I'm taking my information from the summary.

The two members of the Armed Detective Agency without an author's namesake are Naomi and Haruno. (As seen down below)

Both are characters from the novel 'Naomi'. I'm just going to be focusing on Naomi for now, as she plays a bigger role in the novel and in the BSD plot, so I have a better understanding of the character.

Anyways. Naomi and Tanizaki's relationship has never really made sense to me. Asagiri is known for humanising his characters and making sure that all of them have motives, even some antagonists. For example...

Mori, although as asshole of a character, has an overarching need for the greater good. Although he has made some pretty hurtful decisions to get there, it's with a 'good' cause in mind

Fitzgerald wanted the book to revive his daughter to try and piece back together his family by improving his sick wive's mental state

I know this doesn't really apply to Fyodor and Fukuchi, but I have no doubt that by the end of the arc, their actions will have some sort of reasoning to them.

So WHY did he write Naomi and Tanizaki into some sort of seemingly incestuous relationship? Either or both of the scenarios below could explain their actions:

They're faking their romantic intentions

They're fake siblings

It still doesn't answer the question of what their relationship adds to the plot. It could be written with the intention of humour in the end, but Asagiri has stated in an interview that he's a fan of Chekhov’s Gun (the principle that all elements of a story are essential), which means he most likely wrote their relationship with a specific intention.

If Naomi holds a similar characterisation to the novel she is from, then her relationship with Tanizaki might not be as caring as it is made out to be.

In the novel, the character Naomi is actually the antagonist. The protagonist is an older man who becomes obsessed with Naomi and her Westernised personality. (Note: the book is set in post ww2 when America took part in the colonisation of Japan and thus became a large part of the culture there.)

The protagonist, a salaryman named Jōji, plans to gradually groom 15-year-old Naomi when they meet at a cafe. Her true nature is revealed to be incredibly manipulative. She eventually reverses the power imbalance and Jōji ends up completely submitting to her every whim.

This makes me question her role in the plot of BSD. Especially now that we actually haven't seen her in a long time (the entire Decay of Angels arc). Most BSD characters are based on the protagonists of their novels (Oba Yozo and Dazai), if not the author themselves.

Naomi being represented by the Antagonist makes me wonder if she is in fact a threat to Tanizaki. I would say that she is an ability, but Dazai has touched her before, so it's been confirmed she isn't. Could she be made by the book? Is she controlling Tanizaki, a mastermind in disguise? I think there must be more to her character than we see, or else Asagiri wouldn't have written her in.

Dazai's name

Many people focus on Dazai's name, and how people tend to only use his last name. I was thinking about that - many characters are only referred to by their last name, so why is it so significant?

Well, Dazai tends to refer to the people that are significant to his character by their first name (and so do other characters). Chuuya, Atsushi, Fyodor and even Oda (who went by the name 'Odasaku' with Dazai, hence using a mix of first and last names).

Names are very important! To me, this signals the fact he sort of 'hides' parts of himself when he's with others who are close to him and how his true personality is difficult to figure out. Very interesting...

You write a lot like the author osamu dazai so I can see how much you’re influenced by his works. I like both Bsd and original works so uh I just wanna type that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. are their writers or other fanfics that you take inspo from?

For my original version of my fic 'I don't smoke', I took inspiration from a specific bsdxmha crossover! unfortunately, it was taken down a while ago and I have no idea who the writer was... I also was definitely inspired by some of the earlier classic crossovers in the niche, but have branched out into my own plot and style overtime

For some of my shorter stories, I've taken elements of Osamu Dazai's works (yes, the real one)!! Though it's not as prominent in my longer stories id say... besides that, I don't think there's any specific writers or fics that I've used to style my writing.

What does Dazai have to do with the Book?

Dazai has had connections to the Book in the past, implying that he knows or previously knew where it was being held. What is the Book, and why is it so detrimental to the storyline? 

The Book is a highly sought out supernatural item which can alter reality. It consists of many blank pages, and once written on, acts on said words. This has the ability to change reality as it is (Shown in the beginning of the arc where the ADA are suddenly the terrorists that they had perviously sought out to apprehend). The book is regarded as greater than abilities. This could allude to a higher being in play, as the creator of the Book is unknown. Could it be a singularity? Yes, but again, it is mentioned by Ranpo that it is too powerful to be an ability. 

Dazai, as seen in Beast (An alternate universe created where Dazai took over the Port Mafia), is completely aware of the multiple universes created through the book. This ‘Dazai’ from beast creates this universe through the infinite possibilities available to him. 

My interpretation of this text excerpt is that original Dazai was in possession of the Book when he sought out an alternate universe where Oda lived. Original Dazai created Beast Dazai with his memories. Beast Dazai is a product of Dazai’s regrets and therefore behaves accordingly in connection to the original. They are essentially the same person through a completely different timeline. 

Though the wording of it is confusing- You can’t create an alternate world that you already live in unless you are from a different world originally. This could imply though that the world in Beast was identical to the original world until Beast Dazai stumbled upon the Book and diverged the course of the world from there, therefore splitting it. Feel free to correct me on any of this.

Either way, we know that it was most likely obtained from Yokohama (So it was at least there from the years that Dazai was 14 to current age). We also know that original Dazai has some sort of connection to the Book.  

As we see in the image above from chapter 28, Fitzgerald mentions that the Book cannot be affected by any abilities. Though the book is resistant to all abilities, Dazai’s is the exception. Atsushi’s ability is rumoured to have a connection to the book, as well. This leaves there to be two possible options:

1. Dazai’s ability has the capacity to nullify the book, and therefore other supernatural creations that may or may not be limited to abilities, OR he is directly connected to the Book and such is able to interact with it. This makes me wonder, does his power play a much larger role in the plot of BSD? 

2. The Book is actually not resistant to all abilities, and thus there are abilities that share a connection to the book. These abilities would be considered exceptions. Fyodor’s ability also shows resistance to laws that abilities supposedly follow, shown in Beast where his manifested ability not only refuses to attack him, but appears sentient. This theory results in the idea that abilities aren’t a singular type of power; There are fundamental differences between different skills. 

Both options involve Dazai. I think Beast could very well become an important aspect to the storyline of BSD due to the fact that it is proof of what the Book is capable of. Are there other alternate universes created by the Book? 

This information comes from the BSD wiki, the manga panels and the BEAST light novel. I don’t really post analysis stuff, but also it’s fun to research and collect my thoughts, so yeah! Someone discuss bsd theories with me pls im dying nobody wants to talk with me about it
