Fetch Quest part 1

From the way Crowley had hyped it up, Yuu had expected acquiring a new magic gem to be an epic quest. She envisioned delving deep into the earth, scaling treacherous caverns, and narrowly dodging ferocious beasts. What they got instead was a relatively peaceful stroll.

Yuu says relatively because her company was totally dragging down the vibes.

“Myah! Are you crazy! It’s pitch black in there!” 

Fire Catcoon, don't you have literal flames coming out your ears?

“I can't believe I’m stuck with a literal scaredy cat! This is pathetic.” 

Stop egging him on Ace. That attitude is literally how you got here in the first place. 

“You – !”

“Shut up! Both of you!” Fed up, Yuu seized them by an ear each.

“Yeouch!”

“What the fuc – !”

The brats struggle but there's no escape. “We’re here because the two of you couldn't handle one day without starting a fight that destroyed seven hallways!” Also Deuce’s shit aim but he wasn't being a problem right now.

 The duo tries to protest but Yuu digs her nails into their ears.

Deuce watches in discomfort but doesn't actually try to stop her. Good.

“From now until we get back, I’m in charge, and I won't tolerate any more arguing. Are. We. Clear.” Yuu practically hisses the last part.

“Like I'm gonna –” Yuu pinches harder and twists. “Okay!”

Satisfied that order had been restored, Yuu surveyed the trio. Grim was still nursing his sore ear, Ace had retreated a few steps, shooting daggers with his glare, and Deuce was standing ramrod straight.

“So what's the plan then O’ mighty leader.” 

Ace's sarcasm was thick, but Yuu ignored it. She had a job to do.

If she was being honest, Yuu didn't actually have much experience with leadership. Still, she could improvise. Channeling her experience teaming up against fiends, Yuu tries to imitate some of the squad leaders she's worked with. 

“We go in staggered column formation. Myself at point, Grim and Ace take left and right respectively, and Deuce at the rear.” Yuu glares at them, daring anyone to interrupt.

“In the event of a hostile encounter, I’ll engage because I’m the only one with actual combat experience,” – Fire Catcoon starts to speak up but a pointed look silences him – “while Grim acts as my backup,” thanks to that night in Ramshackle she at least has an idea how he fights. “Ace and Deuce will provide cover fire when needed. Any questions?”

Deuce nervously raises a hand. “What's a staggered column formation?” Shifting in place he follows up, “and, uh, cover fire?”

Yuu blinks. Oh, right. Despite this world's freaky magic these people are still basically civilians. Glancing at the other two Yuu suspects they didn't understand much more than Deuce, but were too proud to admit it.

Motioning them over, she kneels down and starts drawing in the dirt.

 “So we are going in with a four point zig-zag pattern,” Yuu starts, drawing four circles connected by a line.

“I’m this dot at the front, then Grim is a little behind to my left, Ace will be further back at Grims right, and we end with you at the back on Ace’s left.”

Deuce is looking avidly at her crude sketch and nods. Despite his aggression from today's earlier fiasco the blunett was being surprisingly cooperative. 

“Cover fire means that if we get in a fight, while Grim and I move forward, you and Ace will use long range spells when we knock an enemy back.” I stand up and dust off my pants.

Fists clenching in determination Deuce looks in my eyes, “Got it!” 

That's the spirit!

Too bad Ace has to speak up. “You're putting the weasel before us? What the hell?”

“Grim is my backup because we’ve fought together before and know how to avoid getting in each other's way.”

At this Grim puffs up with pride. “Yeah!”

“And I've been in combat situations since I was ten. So I’d say I'm qualified to decide this stuff.”

“Wait what?”

Ignoring Ace I summon my scepter, “Alright, nothing else? No? Great.”

“What's that about you fighting since you were ten?”

“I’ll tell you later. Now squad, get in formation.”

“Yeah!” Deuce and Grim cheer. Ace is still looking at me dubiously but he gets in position. 

“Hold still, I'm going to cast a support spell. Grim, we did this before with the dorm ghosts.”

Grim’s tail wiggles as eyes light up with recognition. “The butterfly thing that made me stronger!”

“That's the one. Now, [Dreamer’s Blessing]!”

Shimmering butterflies spiral gently from my scepter and envelop the trio in a gentle glow.

“Alright, let's go!”

I've got this and the end sorted but the fight scene in the middle is giving me trouble so I'm just splitting the mine into three parts. Part three is the start of where this au really diverge but it doesn't feel right to just 'yada yada' away the things that lead up to that.

Staff Meeting

Crowely dragged Yuu and Crewel to a room where Trein, Vargas, and Sam are waiting. Later Yuu will wonder why the campus shopkeeper was included.

Crowely tells the staff that last night one of the “mutated blot monsters” had snuck onto campus and attacked a student.

All the staff are disturbed

Trein asks why a student was at the abandoned dorm in the first place

Crowely tells them that since she was not sorted into any dorm, he had generously offered to let Yuu live there.

The others berate him for trying to dump someone in that wreck.

Looking for a distraction, Crowely prompts Yuu to explain what she knows of the so called “blot monster”

Okay, so! Magica (magical girls/boy) Champions of Hope! A formally recognised position in which a child has been conscripted by an otherworldly power to battle against the evil forces of Chernabog. Scholars theorize that the reason they are chosen so young is due to the pure quality of a child's hope, making it so that as a magica grows they become more powerful than if they were chosen at an older age. magica can apply for a vigilante license, allowing them to apprehend nefarious forces and get excused absences from school if needed.

A magica’s powers are granted in moments of great hope born from great despair. Once granted, the champion is able to boost their body and magic with the power of hope. This gave humanity an edge for a while and things seemed to be getting better. 

When Chernabog learned that kids were being empowered so that they may one day fight his army, he ordered his servants to kill them while they're young. Tactically this was a smart decision, but still a dick move in Yuu’s opinion. The various world governments have tried to set up programs and systems to stop this, but most magica grow up fighting at least once a week. 

Yuu’s home has been under attack by Chernabog’s fiend army for nearly millenia. 

She names and describes a few of the most common fiend types.

The staff are dubious of Crowely’s claims of another world, but can't deny Yuu’s knowledge of these ‘fiends’ as she called them.

To his credit Grim did manage to stay put. For five minutes. Five very long minutes in which he entertained himself by rifling through the infirmary.

Ugh. What did they expect him to do here?! 

After some deliberation Grim decides to see what the enrolled students are up to. After all, as a future student he should get familiar with the classes!

Let's see…

“... you believe it! He’s forcing the entire dorm to work in his stupid cafe…”

“... had to fight for our dorm rooms…”

“... the wrong building! It was so embarrassing…”

Ehhh! Where's all the cool magic talk? These guys are boring.

Picking someone at random Grim follows from above. It's easy to float while propelling himself up the walls. The vaulted ceiling provides easy purchase.

Grim crosses paths with a lion beastman who recognized grim from the ceremony, but the guy doesn't seem to care.

Leona is heading to the greenhouse for a nap and is caught off guard by the little monster that attacked the opening ceremony. The cat monster absconds before Leona can decide what to do.

… Whatever. Not his problem.

…

Crowely returns with Yuu to pick up Grim for lunch but the pair finds the room disorganized but empty. Oh dear.  

The headmaster is panicking at the thought of a monster roaming his school unsupervised. What would the press think! What would the board of directors say!

“Yuu! You must find him at once!”

“…Yeah fair enough. It was my idea to bring him in.”

 But really, Grim’s combat stats are total weak sauce. How much damage can he cause?

…

Having peeked in on multiple different classes, and getting bored by all of them, Grim finds his way to the cafeteria. Lured by the smell of freshly cooked meals, our daring protagonist realizes how hungry he is and decides to steal some food.

Everyone is focused on their own lunch and don't notice the small furry body sneaking around. Grim easily snags a sandwich from a dark haired student (Deuce).

Deuce is visibly confused and asks the others at the table where his food went. A redhead (Ace) mocks Deuce, causing the others at the table to laugh.

Grim thinks he's so slick and starts getting bolder and steals from other people’s plates. Since this is Night Raven the boys immediately accuse each other and fight until someone spots Grim with their food. A small faction of the rioters break off to try and catch the little pest, but Grim makes a clean getaway and leaves chaos in his wake. 

…

Yuu overhears a student with animal ears telling a taller student with a lion tail about how he was able to pocket some extra snacks because some monster broke in and was stealing lunches. Everyone blamed their losses on the flaming tanuki and Ruggie got off scott free! Shi Shi Shi~

“Was it blue!” 

“Gah! Where did you-!”

“The monster! Was the fire blue?!”

“Uh, yes?”

Aww shit.

...

The infirmary isn't empty anymore. The staff are swamped and Yuu enters in time to hear as Crewel laments this year's batch of idiot puppies who couldn't behave for just one day.

“It’s not my fault!”

“That's what all the bad pups say.”

“But there was a monster! It had blue fire and stole my-”

“Quiet!”

“Really the excuses get more and more outrageou-”

Wait a minute. 

Crewel’s head turns to Yuu.

Dammit Grim! I stood up for you!

Ugh, nothing for it, gotta dust off those investigation skills.

…

Grim is let down by how boring the classes seem and stumbles across Ace.

Ace identifies Grim as the beast from orientation and the cafeteria riot.

Grim protests being called a beast and declares he is a great magician.

Ace, never one to pass over a chance to be a little shit, pretends to believe Grim. He apologizes and introduces himself, saying what an honor it is to meet someone so talented.

Grim gets hopeful and excited. 

“Yeah! It is an honor to meet me!”

“You sure were impressive during the ceremony. It takes real skill to light a place up like that!”

“Heh! That was nothing for the Great Grim!”

“Pfft”

Ace cant hold back the laughter.

“Yeah right! As if anyone would be impressed by some piddling weasel!”

“Hey!”

You’d think that one might be a little more cautious when faced with an unidentified monster, especially a monster with a proclivity for arson. But Ace wont let things like caution or good judgment get in the way of entertainment!

As for Grim, last night he fought off a monster in what was probably the most dangerous fight of his life. After something like that there's no way this chump is getting away with mocking Grim.

*FWOOSH*

Grim uses blast and yoinks Ace's magic pen! Its super effective!

“Hah! Who's the weasel now!”

…

Yuu is on the hunt. This in itself isn't too unusual, Duskfront City has had to deal with ghast infiltrators ever since the Dark Dragon’s failed siege. Unfortunately all of her tracking spells are for ghasts, and therefore useless for apprehending a runaway mascot character. 

After questioning the witnesses and examining the scene of the crime Yuu deduces that yes, Grim should not have been left alone.

Dammit Grim!

But where could he have gone?

“Ahhhh! The walls are on fire!”

What

“Some guy is chasing the lunch monster!”

Oh no.

…

Grim doing pretty well. The stupid redhead cant keep up. Ha! The idiot just tripped!

Grim slows down to taunt his pursuer and bumps into some bluenett.

"Aha", Ace dives at them!

Grim dropped the pen. Damn it! The blue klutz distracted Grim!

Deuce recognizes his lunch thief!

Grim does not recognise his lunch victim.

Ace enlists Deuce's help in teaching the weasel a lesson.

Grim is faced with the consequences of his actions and says, 'Not today!'

Now there's two freshmen blasting up the halls while a catcoon makes flame infused leaps from wall-to-wall trying to lose them. The paintings are all shouting and ducking for cover while a few students are knocked aside. 

Grim uses one’s face as a springboard. 

Taking a moment to rest on a chandelier, Grim just can't resist shouting a few taunts. 

“Heh heh heh! Catch me if you can!”

“No fair climbing up onto the chandelier, He’s a thief and a coward! I haven't really learned flight magic yet... What could I summon to hold onto him...? Hmmm... Oh! That's it!”

“Did you come up with somethi- Oh, hey! Stop! What are you doing?! Why are you pointing your pen at me?!”

“Because I'm going to launch you.”

“Are you kidding me?! Bwaaah! Put me down! Seriously, do not launch me! Abort! ABORT!”

“Just make sure to grab him tight. I've got him in my sights, and... Go!”

…

Yuu comes running in to see a light fixture fall and- HOLY SHIT THATS GRIM AND A STUDENT!

Butterflies go flying and Yuu catches the two before shrapnel from the chandelier can get them.

“What thE HELL GRIM!”

“Myaaah!”

Crowely bursts in 

“Headmage, please! I can —”

Poor Deuce is cut off.

“First was the riot in the cafeteria! Then I hear about two freshmen tearing up the hallways with a monster! But even that wasn't enough for you!”

Okay so this is bad but – 

“That chandelier was a magical artifact created for Night Raven upon its founding by a legendary artificer!” 

Oh no.

“Everyone responsible for its destruction is expelled!”

“W-what! I was barely involved!”

“What am I going to do?! How am I going to tell my mother...?”

The blue guy looks ready to cry. Damn, Yuu’s feeling really bad now. Ugh, Grim may have been the main problem, but none of this could have happened if Yuu had taken this more seriously.

“Sir I was the one who insisted on Grim staying, the responsibility for something he instigated should fall on me.”

“I would estimate its worth to be no less than a billion thaumarks. And you intend to repay that sum?”

“Urk!”

“So much!”

Just looking at the other students' reactions – that must be a lifetime of debt! But she won't just back out dammit! 

“That's… Um, I'll find a way.”

Yuu wonders what the employment laws are like here.

Crowely pauses for the first time since arriving and looks over the cowed delinquents.

“Ah… There may be one way to fix this.”

“The magestone that powered this chandelier was mined from the Dwarfs' Mine. If you can acquire a magestone with the same properties, it may be possible to repair it.”

Aaaand off to the mines we go

the next morning

Somehow, Yuu and Grim actually got some rest. Too bad Crowley didn't think to warn the rest of the staff about the wayward youth.

Crewel went to the infirmary early to make sure the potions were fully stocked. The professor was surprised to see a student already there. 

His presence wakes Yuu up, which in turn wakes up Grim. The pair got roughly five hours of sleep. Not too bad, all things considered. Still not great.

True to his name, Crewel shows no mercy and doesn't hesitate to reprimand what appears to be an aspiring troublemaker.

Couldn't they have waited at least a day before getting into trouble?

The duo just kinda watches in a sleepy haze.

“What are you doing here?”

“I should be asking you that, pup.”

“Huh?”

“Not even a full day and you're already in the infirmary!”

“Huh?”

Crewel doesn't know it, but he just met the most troublesome students to grace the halls of NRC.

Meanwhile Crowely has been working harder than he had in over a decade. A new type of monster had been popping up all over Twisted Wonderland, and the first real lead on their origin had just appeared in HIS school.

How troublesome.

Dire Crowely, being the responsible man that he is, decided the best course of action would be to call for a meeting of his most reliable staff to see if there is any way he could dump this mess on someone else, delegate the responsibilities that will be gained once the child's origin comes to light. Because as much as he wished to keep his school secluded and away from prying eyes, the new breed of monsters could not be handled alone.

Intent on retrieving Yuu for the upcoming staff meeting, Crowely enters the infirmary and sees Crewel is also there. How convenient. 

Crowely dragged Yuu and Crewel away. Grim isn't interested in a boring meeting, but when the headmaster tells him to stay put Grim complains.

Why wouldn't you want the Great Grim?!

Crowely waves him off, saying it’s confidential.

Paths diverge, Yuu with the staff and Grim, unsupervised.

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 5.2

***Back to Yuu at Ramshackle ***

She was gathering the least grubby pillows, cushions, and drapes when the rain started. This place was already depressing, between the chilling drafts and foreboding shadows Yuu’s nerves were already on high alert. 

The pitter-patter of rain quickly became a harsh pounding against the walls, and served as the last prop needed to turn this dismal building into the set of a horror movie.

Seriously, Yuu was half expecting a fiend to jump out from around the next corner. Or behind her. Or perhaps from above…

**BANG**

Right on cue the noise reverbs through the building, quickly followed by frantic scratching.

Yuu’s scepter is out and ready faster than you could say “jump scare”.

Ain't no way she’s going down like some extra in the first ten minutes of the movie!

The building rattles and moans, starting quiet but slowly picking up volume.

Yuu approached the hallway exit, weapon drawn and body away from the door. Nudging it open she slowly pans her view (gotta slice the pie!) and fires a low energy bolt inside.

“Nyeh-!”

Gottem!

Wait. She recognizes that voice.

“Gah! It’s you again!”

Fire catcoon!

“What are you doing here!”

In order to escape the storm Grim had broken into the nearby building. 

Soggy and tired, he didn't have the energy to do more than some token threats. 

For her part, Yuu was feeling pretty worn out. 

This may not have been the worst day of her life, but the kidnapping/enrollment to mystery boarding school was still pretty stressful. 

Neither party was eager for another fight, but that wasn't up to them.

While the two were posturing the rattling had only gotten closer.

“Oho? Some new residents?”

“A ghost?!”

The disturbance is a lot closer now

“I’d love it if we could play…”

Two more ghosts phase through the wall, escaping whatever was making the racket on the other side.

“...But, ah, now isn't really a good time.”

The wall breaks as a being of dread and bloodlust enters the room.

Grim freaks out.

Yuu freaks out.

“Oh shit that's an upyr!”

“A what!?”

“It's a type of fiend made from dead people,”

It takes a swipe but the group is already running

“They're weak to light and fire based attacks!”

This one looked different from the pictures. Kinda raggedy, like it's malnourished.

“Hey kid, you seem familiar with this thing. Think ya can lend a hand?”

“Sure can, this is what I’m trained for!” Theoretically that is. 

Actually, this was Yuu’s first time seeing a upyr in person.

 But the one before them is looking pretty mangy and worn out. Like a humanoid representation of the building they're in right now. So she would probably be fine.

Guess I should do my thing.

[Hope’s Guiding Light, Ardent Dream, Awaken!]

My uniform shimmers into place around me

“What the fuck?”

Guess he’s never seen a magica before.

The catcoon was so caught off guard that the upyr nearly got him.

Thankfully one of the spooks blasted them out of the way.

“Mya! Don’t hit me!”

“Better a kick to the butt than to kick the bucket!”

I got you fam

[Dreamer’s Blessing]

A spray of butterflies engulf Grim and the ghosts.

The group exclaims about feeling stronger.

I love support spells, the best way to heal someone is to make sure they wont need healing.

“Ghosts! Harass the fiend and keep it distracted! Grim blast your fire! If we stall it long enough I can charge up my [Hope’s Smite]”

“How are you doing that with your voice?”

“Doing what?”

No questions, just fight.

Thanks to our incredible teamwork, but mostly the upyr’s already terrible state, we actually managed to destroy it, along with the building.

“We did it! Myeh? What’re you doing?!”

Yuu had begun to stomp on the upyr’s remains, before kicking the leftover ashes into the wind.

“Just in case” she says before sitting with a tired huff.

Grim gets to watch as the pink costume disappears with a sparkly light.

On one paw, Grim really wants to demand answers.

On the other paw…. It's been a really long day.

Crowley shows up to find Yuu and Grim huddled under some rubble.

“What have you done!?!?”

Great timing birdman.

Yuu and Grim trip over themselves to explain how this instance of property damage wasn't their fault.

Crowley remembers that ah yes there were ghosts here but that they wouldn't have done this much destruction.

The duo insists that they were fighting for their lives.

Then the ghosts come out and corroborate that there was a monster attack.

Ghost B explained that something had broken in a couple days ago and they were searching for the intruder to ‘play’ with them.

At first it just hid, but with each sunset the trespasser grew bolder, until it started outright attacking them at night.

The Ramshackle ghosts were worried that it was only a matter of time before the intruder started attacking, and possibly killing students.

And Crowely would know all this if he paid more attention to his school.

“Yes, well-!”

Ramshackle has been vacant for so long! How can he be expected to pay attention to such an obsolete part of the campus?

Please ignore the fact that he had tried putting Yuu here…

What is more important is the fact that this fiend, as Yuu named it, had reached the school in the first place.

The headmaster revealed that for the past decade similar creatures had been appearing in Twisted Wonderland, but the authorities have been working to keep this out of public view. 

Even S.T.Y.X had gotten involved due to the blot-adjacent nature of these beings.

Well, Yuu doesn't know what blot is, but her home has been dealing with friends for centuries.

Crowely tries berating Yuu, saying this was supposed to be her residence.

She’s like dude chill I can just set up some sheets.

It'll be just like camping.

Birdman backtracks and says she'll just have to spend the night in the infirmary.

He tries to shoo Grim away, but Yuu is still feeling solidarity from the attack and insists the catcoon stays with her. 

For his part, now that he knows there might be more fiends out there, Grim isn't super psyched to go back into the forest.

Crowely gives in, with the caveat that Yuu is responsible for Grim’s behavior from now on.

“Yeah sure whatever.”

Ends with Yuu and Grim saying goodnight in the infirmary.

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 5.1

TIL tumblr has a word limit

Apparently having a chick enrolled at an all guys school is problematic. At least that’s what Yuu picked up from Squackman’s ramblings about “scoundrels” and “wolves” and “scandals”. 

He does manage to get a hold of himself after an embarrassing rumble from Yuu’s stomach lets them know that she hasn't eaten since before her kidnapping transportation to Night Raven. The headmaster leaves with a promise to return with food and Yuu gives it even odds that he comes back. 

No, that's mean.

Yuu remembers how worried he was about the school's reputation. If nothing else he’ll come back to make sure she isn't causing trouble. 

But until then Yuu is left alone to explore Ramshackle.

The building is creaky, leaky, moldy, and a whole bunch of other things that make the magica wonder how the whole structure hadn’t collapsed yet. 

Sure Yuu had seen worse off buildings, but she'd never been expected to sleep in them. 

The walls echo with a faint moan.

Yeah, there’s nothing Birdman could say that would convince her to trust the second floor not to give out.

Without even bothering to check up the stairs Yuu decides to just sleep on the remains of an old couch in the lobby.

As she walks deeper into the hallway a burst of wind sends the dorm shuddering.

You know what? Maybe just staying by the entrance is best. Just in case there's a need for a hasty exit.

***And now for something different***

You see, while Yuu was being informed about her new immigration status Grim was on an adventure of his own. 

His whole life had been spent being chased away by people complaining about the magic beast.

 But the Great Grim isn't a beast! He’s a magician! And not just any magician, but the Greatest Magician in all of Twisted Wonderland!

While eavesdropping on people discussing magic, NRC was often name dropped as a school where the smartest, strongest, most ambitious magicians went to learn. 

Grim is smart, strong, and ambitious! Night Raven College was perfect for a prodigy like Grim! 

Apparently there’s a Dark Mirror that sends carriages out to bring promising young mages to the school.

So he waited…

And waited….

But Grim’s carriage never came.

…

So what!

If the stupid mirror won't recognize his greatness Grim will just have to show them!

 Grim taught himself how to read maps, and sneak onto transportation, and remain undetected. All so that he could prove to the world that The Great Grim isn't some stupid pest!

The plan was perfect.

 NRC’s security was no match for Grim. He easily broke in and found the room where new students were waiting. From listening in on conversation Grim knew that the freshmen would remain unconscious until the ceremony. All Grim had to do was take the robes off some chump and he was in!

Except the chump he chose woke up and ruINED EVERYTHING!

First the jerk ran off, so Grim had to chase him. 

Then he blasted Grim with some crazy pink laser!

What kind of power was that?!?!

Thankfully Grim made it to the mirror room. 

Sure he wasn't able to sneak in with the others, but if he could just get sorted, then they would have to accept him!

Yeah a window broke. And yeah there was some fire. But so what? This is a school for super prodigies! A bit of damage shouldn’t be a big deal.

But that stupid human from earlier was there again! And this time he whacked Grim with his stupid pink stick all the way across the buildings and into the nearby forest!

Mrrao! He was so close!! That jerk better watch out.

Cursing his new nemesis Grim starts heading back to the campus. Lesser mages might have given up, but the Great Grim cannot be stopped.

“Urk-!”

Okay, so maybe he's a little hurt. And he doesn't have the energy to fly. And it kinda hurts to run…

This is nothing! 

NOTHING!!!

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 4

“Listen dude, I don't know what kind of cult thing you’ve got here and at this point I don't care. I just need to get back home before my mentor freaks out.”

This time it really isn't Yuu’s fault she got lost!

“Cult?! Night Raven College is the most prestigious school in all of Twisted Wonderland!”

“Cool story bro. You still kidnapped me.”

“The black carriage does not kidnap – !”

“The what?”

So according to Birdman all students are recruited via some spooky carriage and horse that Yuu does not remember seeing.

Actually she can't remember anything of how she got here. The day was Tuesday, or maybe Wednesday?  She had been getting ready for… something important. Something that had the adult magica gearing up. Yuu remembers a sense of urgency, this had been different from the usual fiend attacks. 

What happened? Did something go wrong? 

For the first time since waking up Yuu feels truly scared.

Panic rises as she tries to go over what enemies could have the power to transport someone while fogging their memories.

Meanwhile!

Totally oblivious to Yuu’s mental crisis, Birdman was reaching his own conclusions.

“... truly weren't meant to be here then that could explain why you couldn't be sorted. I suppose there's nothing for it. Step back in front of the mirror, young man.”

Finally Crowley looks back at the child, Yuu, and takes in his state.

One hand is tugging at his hair while the other grips his strange magic pen. The boy’s eyes are unfocused and he rocks his weight back and forth from one foot to the other.

Hmm.

Hmmmmmmm. 

That’s probably not good. If only Crewel were here to deal with this instead.

Remembering the damage from earlier, Crowley approaches cautiously. He keeps an eye on the hand holding the oversized pen and grasps Yuu’s shoulder in a clawed grip.

Yuu does a full body jolt but listens when Crowley tells him to approach the mirror again

*Return to sender!*

…

Nothing happens.

Yuu’s anxiety is getting out of control, so she tries channeling it towards something more productive. Specifically anger.

This mirror!

First he calls her a freak, now he's saying her home doesn't exist. 

“I cannot discern –”

“Well, is there anything you do know? Or should I do this place a favor and break you out of that frame!”

For the record, Yuu wasn't actually going to break the mirror. Squakface still wasn't willing to risk it as he dragged her out of the room.

Crowley guides Yuu to the library where they spend some time looking for references to her home city Duskfront.

Eventually Yuu asks what the books are referring to when they say Twisted Wonderland.

After some more back and forth Crowley concludes that Yuu must be from another world. 

Yuu is like okay bro, a likely story.

She’s still concerned this might be a plot, and thinks it's pretty convenient that they happen to be on an isolated island.

Crowley suggests that they shelve this for now and he offers to house Yuu in an unused dorm.

Yuu is not having it and tries to walk out, determined to swim back home if she must.

Crowley protests, despite the many complaints from both students and staff alike Crowley does in fact have a sense of responsibility. And while this particular student is, for whatever reason, unsortable, he cannot allow a student to just walk out. Not even one as unruly as Yuu.

Yuu really, really, doesn't want to be alone with her thoughts waste any time, but she understands this isn't the type of situation you can just bully your way out of. So with gritted teeth Yuu finally hisses out, “fine!”

Birdface is leading her far away from the main building.

Really far.

How big is this campus?

Finally they reach a derelict building that may at one point have been a dormitory.

“It's a little old, but a building with such character is suitable for such a rambunctious young man.”

“Why do you keep calling me that?”

“Calling you what? Rambunctious? I’d say it's rather accurate.”

“No. Young man. I'm not a guy.”

“What?”

Yuu loosens the sash holding her outfit and pulls back the outer robe to reveal modest, but still visible, breasts.

“WHAT!”

I was going to make it longer but I decided to split the final into two parts and give you this now. Sorry about the long wait (╥_╥). I'm kinda disappointed by how close to canon I've been but I know there will be big opportunity for change later. Specifically with the ghosts.

Ive been thinking about writing some drabbles or trying to draw out some scenes, turns out even making a short comic is hard. Im working on a short piece about the mine based more on the manga than the game. I'll focus on that after the last part of Yuu's first day, but might also do some smaller posts as well.

I promise I have a plan

In canon Yuu is a passive individual, a normal student who has to learn how to handle magical disasters. C!Yuu does often guide their friends to victory, but their main value is in how they can provide a new perspective for the boys who have spent their entire lives being pushed by circumstances beyond their control into villainous roles. 

C!Yuu’s empathy pushes them to understand the reason behind the student’s suffering, and their charisma allows them to nudge the boys towards self reflection and healthy solutions. 

In the magical girl au I want to explore a story where Yuu isn't a calming presence. Despite having taken on an heroic role since the age of ten this Yuu is used to being active. This may or may not be a good thing. We already have C!Yuu gently takes people by their hand and tugs them towards a brighter future. I want a story where the boys are confronted head on by M!Yuu  and are pushed into a faster overblot  and are shoved off a metaphorical cliff. That they might happen to land on a good solution doesn’t change the more violent nature of M!Yuu’s approach.

 M!Yuu can easily take care of magic disasters, but is drastically less capable than C!Yuu when handling non-combat related stress. I will admit to being somewhat inspired by deconstruction series such as Madoka Magica (considered by many to be the magnum opus of magical girl deconstruction) and Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka (I don't recommend this unless you like watching anime ironically. I like how they took a militaristic view on magical girls, but think they were excessive on the gore and fan service). This Yuu has baggage. I've probably spent an unreasonable amount of time brainstorming M!Yuu’s home world and what kind of person it would create. 

I still want to keep the bits of personality we’ve seen from canon. C!Yuu is blunt with their friends and somewhat impulsive. The voice lines show us that Yuu will initiate friendly physical contact and invade personal space. We also know that they are a bit of an airhead, as seen from the way Hornton’s identity managed to stay a mystery right up to ch5. Seriously, they got a card signed with the initials M.D. and hand delivered by the Diasomnia vice dormwarden, but it took six people calling Hornton by his full name for Yuu to finally take a hint. 

!CYuu is resourceful, which I feel is a skill they have honed due to being magicless in a magic school full of delinquents, so in that regard M!Yuu will come up short. A big difference is that M!Yuu has magic that, while not the same as what is used by the locals, will still put them in a better position when it comes to negotiations. C!Yuu has to put up with a lot of bullshit from Crowley and the students, but M!Yuu is more of a physical threat and her protests can’t be so easily ignored. Overall I hope to make a somewhat absent-minded sledgehammer with occasional episodes of PTSD.

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 3

Finally Yuu reaches the giant sorting mirror.

She doesn't even care about the creepy face. No one else is worrying so she won't either.

One step closer to getting some answers and going home.

Yup. nothing left but to walk forward and –

**BOOM**

A window shatters. Glass and blue fire rains down on unsuspecting victims. There is running, shouting, and crying. Gavin screams

“The Great Grim is here!!!”

Crowley is freaking out. 

“Who let a monster in here?! Which one of you miscreants is responsible for this!!”

What the hell? Shouldn't you be more concerned with saving your students?

Yuu looked towards the more authoritative robe people and saw they were… just standing there. Talking amongst each other. 

Some were even smiling. Jeeze.

“I got some glass in my eyes!”

“Someone help please!”

“My hair! MY HAIR!!!”

Blur fire continues to spread and bedlam reigns supreme.

Turns out Yuu should have been paying more attention to the catcoon, because while she was taking in the mayhem around her Grim made his move.

**THUMP**

Yuu is shoved to the ground and the little rat takes her place in front of the mirror.

The headmaster is still squawking helplessly. 

The student leadership is bickering amongst themselves.

“There's still glass in my eyes!!”

Yuu gives in to her irritation and summons her scepter.

Grim is still monologuing about his superiority as Yuu gets ready to swing

“Ardent…”

Grim turns as she starts to move. He's too late.

“STRIKE”

The annoying rat is sent rocketing with a satisfying THWAP.

Another window is shattered, along with its frame and some of the surrounding wall

As the projectile disappears into the distance all that's left is a fading trail of pink glowing butterflies

Yuu: 1     Catcoon: 0

A few seconds of silence and then – 

“DON’T JUST BREAK MORE WINDOWS!”

Now the headmaster is berating Yuu, again. There's just no winning with this guy.

Students are back to screaming and someone from the leader's group is laughing.

Everything is still on fire as Mr Horn Guy speaks up, loud enough to fill the room.

“I suppose there's no helping it. I shall restore the mirror chamber.”

The world rumbles, green lights dance through the room and a verdant mist engulfs Yuu’s vision.

When the mist clears everything is fixed. Everything.

Fire? Out. 

Windows? Repared.

 Walls? Pristine. 

That guy’s eyes? Un-glassed.

Even Yuu’s robes felt tidier.

“Huh, nifty.”

The others seemed less taken with Horn Guy's magic.

Actually they're being pretty rude. Throwing around terms like "monstrous strength" and "intimidating aura"

“Ahem. Thank you Mr Draconia. And now to conclude the ceremony…”

Yuu walks up before anything else can interrupt.

“State thy name.” “Yuu.”

“The shape of thy soul is… unclear.”

Wut

“I cannot decipher the wavelengths of this one, neither color nor shape are suited to any dorm” 

Man, Birdface McSquawky is not okay with this. He’s shouting about how this is “impossible” and “unprecedented”

“Ugh, I can't take any more random events. Ignihyde, time to GTFO.”

Looks like Fire Guy reached his breaking point

Aaaaaand looks like the others are following his cue.

Pretty soon it's just Yuu and Birdman

“I can't believe they just left me to deal with this alone. How cruel.”

“Really? Because after how they handled the catcoon attack this seems pretty in character.”

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 2

It doesn't look like Fire Dude (Idia?) is gonna speak first

“So what did he mean by orientation?”

Muttering: “WTF are you stupid, how do you not know?”

“What was that”

“Ahhh, nothing”

Yuu gets the sneaking suspicion that this guy isn't going to be super helpful.

Fire Dude hunches further in on himself.

So orientation. That's like an introduction event for group stuff.

But what's with the robes?

Oh geez, is this a cult thing!?

Okay Yuu, gotta stay sharp. Play cool. Don't let him know you're onto them.

“Soooo will the leader be at orientation?”

Nailed it

“Huh?”

Did not nail it

Muttering: “what's with this weirdo.”

“Umm the headmaster will be there.”

bluff check passed

“Oki-doki, then I'll just save my questions for them. Please lead the way.”

Muttering: “I thought it couldn't get any worse than Malleus, but now I’m stuck with an escort quest for this newb.”

Well sorry Fire Dude. I didn't want to be kidnapped by your cult but sometimes these things happen.

They do eventually make it to a giant room with heck-ton of people in robes

Actually all these people seem to be guys.

Huh. That probably means something.

Yuu doesn't get a chance to ponder this mystery before a tall figure captures her attention.

Dressed differently from the others, this man has a snazzy tophat and bird mask hiding his identity, and wears a fancy suit and feathered jacket combo.

But the sleeves are hanging off his shoulders? Why not just wear a cape??

Uh oh. Bird-mask-top-hat man is heading straight for them.

Crowley is *!!!* at sight of the missing new student while Idia absconds the fuck out.

Fire Guy nooooo! We grew so close, why would you abandon me!?!

Birdman is gesticulating wildly as he talks.

“The nerve of kids these days!”

Ugh. This Birdman is squawking at Yuu about impatient students and she can't get a word in edgewise.

“I wasn't the one who-”

“Really, it seems each year students get worse!”

“No listen, there was this flaming raccoon-”

“Despite my hard work there's always something!”

“Bruh”

The child keeps trying to make excuses, but Crowley won't have any of it.

Fortunately the Headmaster of Night Raven is so generous, and only sends the delinquent to the back of the sorting line as punishment.

At this point Yuu is just going with the flow. Surely if the strange cult meant her harm they would be more menacing?

Yeah the birdman is super rude but he isn't actually hurting anyone. 

And if Yuu was listening right this is apparently some kind of school, so there should be staff or teachers around who can actually help.

Yuu figures she can just wait until another, less wacky adult, shows up.

Oh hey! Horn Guy from earlier is standing with Fire Dude and a few other fancier cultists (students?).

They make eye contact and Yuu smiles and gives a little wave

Horn Guy nods back with a slight smile.

Smile plus a nod means we’re basically allies now.

Yuu is pretty sure that's how this works. If this is a school then the same technique used for choosing a worksheet partner should apply here as well.

Meanwhile the other dorm leaders are wondering why tf this freshie is waving at The Malleus Draconia

Magical Girl Yuu's First Day pt 1

Yuu wakes up in a tight space

It's a coffin. Yuu is in a coffin

Coffin is on fire!?!

Shoves lid off, showing a fire-cat-raccoon thing

Fire Catcoon?

Fire Catcoon speaks in the third person. Apparently he’s named Grim

Grim demands Yuu’s clothes.

Ummm no? Is this some new type of Evil Plot from the baddies?

Yuu punches Grim and hauls ass outta there.

This is pretty strange, even by her standards.

Deciding to put some distance between herself and the coffin room, Yuu keeps running.

She reaches an exterior corridor and hops over the wall.

Damn this place is HUGE.

Also where's all of Yuu’s stuff? Why is she in a fancy bathrobe? How did she get in the coffin?

Wait. the other coffins. 

Are there other people trapped in there? Oh no. 

Feeling that she should do something, but lost and lacking a clear enemy to beat up, Yuu wanders.

Yuu reaches a courtyard, interrupting a conversation between a dude with fire hair and a guy with horns.

Threeway staring contest commences.

…

Yuu is asking herself if these are baddies. Should she attack? 

Malleus is wondering why there are now two people in ceremonial robes (don't worry hornton you'll figure it out)

Idia is DYING from social overexposure

None of them get to speak because Fire Catcoon catches up, yowling for revenge!

Wouldn't it have been easier to mug some other coffin? Why you gotta harass me?

Yuu gets pissed and Eldritch Blasts Ardent Strikes Grim.

“Fuck off!!!”

Grim is blasted away.

Fire Dude is freaking out.

Horn Guy politely asks Yuu what is going on.

Well if he's asking politely then he must not be a baddie. 

Yuu explains being woken from the coffin and chased for the clothes off her back.

Horn Guy seems to realize something. 

That's good for him, Yuu is still super confused.

Horn guy does a little ‘aha’

“Today must be orientation, I hadn't realized.”

He thanks Yuu for the timely reminder, and apologized to Idia (Fire Dude?) for holding him up “I will see you two at the ceremony.”

Horn Guy disappears into sparkles 

Neat

Fire Dude (Idia?) freezes as Yuu turns to him.

Yuu thinks about bailing, but decides to try and get some answers.

Idia is mortified that he now has to walk the WHOLE WAY with someone!
