Footprints

My name is Shawnie...but that's one of the very few things I can remember about myself at the moment. I have been slowly regaining my memory, however, I'm still not entirely sure where I am. This barren wasteland, its surface covered in a blanket of red sand, while the sky is merely a black night with the absence of stars, is it possible I´m on Mars? Hmm...that´s what it seems like. Ok, I´m just going to say it´s Mars to make myself feel better.

Let's see...there's a spaceship, I assume it was mine, I do vaguely recall exiting said spaceship and walking toward a large boulder, probably looking for signs of life or something. But it looks damaged, most likely the result of a crash landing. Could that be why I can't seem to remember anything? Amnesia caused by head injury? Suppose that´s possible. Though it doesn't explain where I am or why I'm here. Or who those other two people are.

Yeah, so, I'm not exactly alone here. Though I feel alone because I don't have a clue who those two are. One is a girl, couldn’t be more than 18 years old, while the other, a young boy, possibly around 15.

Now, the fact that none of us seem to smell super bad, and the spaceship looks as though it crashed fairly recently, I´d say we've been here no more than a day.

I walked nervously toward the two kids, “Hey guys, what are your names again?”

“I’m Rockie.” The girl replied.

“I-I-I’m…uh-um…” The boy struggled to answer. “Hey, it’s ok, you can tell us.” I said, reassuringly. “I-it’s...Evan.” He finally said.

Rockie looked up at me, “You’re Shawnie right?” “Yep.”

As we were all starting to warm up to each other, in the corner of my eye I noticed a dark figure in the distance, and thinking it was another person with no recollection of who or where they were, began walking toward them.

After a few steps, the figure started sprinting after me, though it seemed to not actually be running, but floating.

I stopped and turned around, screaming at the others to run. Startled, Rockie and Evan looked back at the figure and ran with me. We ran to take shelter in the spaceship, but halfway I tripped and fell and ended up having to hide in a small cave. I peeked my head out to see if the others were ok, and I saw the figure right behind them. It seemed to be wearing a black cloak, and it was holding something, but I couldn’t tell what nor could I see its face. As it went past me I shot up and watched as it reached for Evan, and the moment it touched him, he vanished. In his place was a glowing white orb, which the figure grasps and seems to make disappear.

I began running after them, toward the spaceship, when Rockie had to turn right, but she couldn’t go fast enough and the cloaked figure touched her and grabbed the orb that appeared where she once stood.

Before it could turn around, I had already sprinted inside the ship, and I saw three people. Then I realized…none of us were wearing spacesuits.

I leaned in to one person and removed the helmet...it was Evan.

Feeling overwhelmed with fear, hoping I was dreaming, praying I was wrong, I went to the next person and removed that helmet...it was Rockie.

I was telling myself it wasn’t real, saying “It’s just a dream, it’s just a dream, it’s just a dream…” But deep down, I think I knew what was going on.

I felt so scared, I tried so desperately to wake up...but it was clear this was no dream. Before taking the helmet off the last person, I stepped outside the ship, and what I saw astounded me.

There were no footprints in the sand. Not one. Not from me, Rockie, Evan, or even the dark figure. I turned back into the ship, and went to take the helmet off the other person, and without a doubt, it was me.

Finally realizing what had happened, I remembered Rockie was my best friend, and Evan was her cousin. I remembered we were sent on a mission from Earth to find creatures that could help save it. And I guess...we didn’t even make it to landing.

I exited the spaceship one last time, and turned to see the hooded figure simply waiting for me. I saw it’s face, a skull, and it’s skeletal hand holding a scythe.

It was death.

I was ready. I took it’s hand and felt a surge. Last thing I remember, was seeing white, and I knew I was heading to a much better place.

Multiple Japanese Cities to Accept Same-Sex Partnerships This April and Beyond

Currently, same-sex partnerships are not legally recognized at a federal level. However, 11 cities and municipalities recognize and provide certificates and limited benefits to same-sex couples.

After a lot of pushing and hard work by some fantastic organizations, this list of 11 is set to increase greatly.

As of April 1st, 2019, Hida, Fuchū, Yokosuka, Kumamoto, and Sōja will all recognize same-sex couples. Later that month, on the April 22nd, Odawara is set to follow suit and Sakai on the 30th.

Several months from now in June Miyazaki will begin issuing certificates, as well as Kitakyushu a month later in July 2019. Narashino is set to do the same at an undetermined point in 2020.

In addition to these confirmed cities, same-sex partnership recognition is being considered in many other cities and wards including Abashiri, Hanno, Iruma, Kazo, Sakado, Hachioji, Sumida, Koto, Kita, Arakawa, Chiyoda, and more!

Ibaraki may also become the first prefecture (one of 47 areas dividing Japan’s administration) to recognize same-sex couples, as it is set to consider a proposal to issue certificates this April.
