The sky over Monaco was a dull grey, heavy clouds rolling over the coast like someone had drawn the blinds on the entire city. The rain hadn’t let up since dawn, the soft patter against the windows weaving in and out of your thoughts like background music to a film.

You stood barefoot in the kitchen, stirring a pot of chicken noodle soup with one hand, phone cradled between your shoulder and cheek. You were talking to your mom, half-distracted, eyes occasionally darting to the hallway leading to the living room.

“…no, Mom, he’s not dying. It’s just the flu,” you said with a small laugh, though your brows furrowed slightly. “Yes, I made him tea. No, not the ginger kind. He hates ginger. Yes, I made him change his socks.”

You hung up just as the soup hit a slow, rolling boil. The entire flat smelled like garlic, thyme, and something soothing. Comfort food. You hoped it would help. Charles wasn’t a good patient—he hated being down, hated being weak. Maybe it was the athlete in him, or the Monegasque stubbornness, or both.

You ladled the soup into a bowl, grabbed a glass of water, some tissues, and the cold medicine you’d all but forced him to take earlier. You balanced everything on a tray and padded into the living room.

Charles was exactly where you’d left him: slumped sideways on the couch in a sea of fleece blankets, his face half-buried in a pillow, damp hair matted to his forehead. His usual olive skin was paler than normal, with a rosy flush over his cheeks and nose that would’ve been cute if he didn’t look so miserable.

“Soup delivery,” you announced softly.

He stirred, blinking blearily. “You’re an angel.”

“You say that now. Wait until I make you take another dose of that disgusting syrup later.”

He groaned, weakly. “I’d rather crash the Ferrari.”

You laughed, setting the tray down and sitting beside him. You pressed a hand to his forehead, frowning. Still too warm. “Your fever’s not breaking.”

“Maybe it’ll go away if I just… stop acknowledging it.”

“Oh, so we’re doing the ‘ignore it and hope it disappears’ method? Very scientific, Mr. Leclerc.”

He cracked a tired smile. “It works for tire degradation.”

You rolled your eyes and handed him the soup, waiting as he slowly sat up to sip at it. He made a small, appreciative sound in the back of his throat after the first spoonful. You reached over and tucked the blanket around his legs again—he’d been kicking it off in his sleep all morning.

“Do you want to try eating more later?” you asked, gently carding your fingers through his hair.

“If it’s this soup, then yes.”

You tilted your head. “You’re sweet when you’re feverish.”

“I’m always sweet,” he croaked, before breaking into a harsh cough that made him double over. You rubbed his back until it passed, then handed him the water.

“I don’t know how you still look good like this,” you muttered. “It’s genuinely unfair.”

He sniffled dramatically. “Don’t lie. I look like a sickly goat.”

“You do not. Goats don’t have eyelashes like yours.”

He leaned his head against your shoulder after a few more bites of soup, warm and slightly damp. “Marry me.”

You blinked. “Excuse me?”

He chuckled, throat raw. “Not now. But one day. When I’m not disgusting.”

“Charles,” you said with a soft smile, wrapping an arm around him, “you could propose in the middle of a tissue avalanche and I’d still say yes.”

He paused, eyes lifting toward yours in that half-sleepy, vulnerable way you’d only seen a handful of times—moments when the helmet was off, the walls down.

“…Yeah?” he whispered.

You kissed his temple. “Yeah.”

A few hours passed in quiet.

Charles fell asleep against you, the soup forgotten, his fingers still loosely tangled with yours. You scrolled through your phone, read a few pages of a novel, checked his temperature again. He stirred every now and then, mumbling in French, half-lucid dreams mixing with the sound of the rain.

At one point, he startled awake, sweating and disoriented.

“Shh, baby, it’s just the fever,” you murmured, wiping his forehead with a damp cloth. He leaned into your hand like it grounded him.

“I thought I missed the race,” he said, still halfway in the dream.

“There’s no race. You’re safe. You’re home.”

He exhaled slowly. “Okay.”

Later, you coaxed him into a lukewarm bath to help bring his temperature down. He sat in the water like a sulking cat, hair damp, eyes drooping.

“I hate this,” he muttered.

“I know. But you’ll feel better. And I promise not to take any embarrassing photos.”

“…You better not.”

You tossed a clean towel at him. “I’ll delete the ones I already took, then.”

“Chérie!”

That evening, the rain let up for a while. The apartment glowed gold with lamp light, warm against the grey outside.

Charles was bundled in fresh pajamas and propped up with pillows in bed, scrolling aimlessly on his phone. You sat beside him with a heating pad over your lap and a book in hand. The air smelled faintly of eucalyptus from the diffuser you'd set up earlier.

“Thank you for taking care of me,” he said, voice still rough but clearer.

You looked over. “You’d do the same.”

“I know. But still. You could’ve just left me to wallow.”

“You’d get soup on the ceiling if I did.”

He laughed—really laughed, even if it turned into a cough halfway through. You leaned over and pressed your lips to his cheek, letting them linger.

He reached up and gently cupped your face, thumb brushing along your jaw. “You make even the worst days feel bearable.”

You kissed him again, softer this time. “That’s the job, isn’t it?”

His eyes searched yours, even glassy and heavy-lidded, and there was something more serious behind them now. “If I ever got really sick—like, properly sick—would you stay?”

The question knocked the breath from you for a moment.

“Of course I would. You don’t even have to ask.”

“I think about it sometimes,” he admitted, “how racing is everything one day, and the next… it’s gone. What if I wasn’t Charles Leclerc anymore?”

You closed the book and set it aside, fully turning toward him.

“You’d still be you,” you said, fingers brushing his. “I fell in love with you. Not just the driver. Not the Ferrari suit. Not the podiums. You, who snores when he’s stuffed up and eats cereal with a fork when we’re out of spoons. You who loves his family more than anything and sings off-key in the shower.”

He swallowed hard. “You make it sound like I’m worth staying for.”

“You are,” you said simply.

A long pause, just the sound of the rain starting up again outside.

Then: “I’m definitely marrying you.”

You laughed, threading your fingers through his again. “Not until you can say it without coughing halfway through.”

“Fine. But start looking at dresses anyway.”

You sat up, suddenly alert. "What’s going on?"

Another pause. Then—

"I’m leaving England."

The words hit you like a punch to the stomach. "What?"

Joao exhaled. "I just got the call. I’m going on loan to AC Milan. I leave tonight."

Your heart dropped. "Tonight?"

"I wanted to tell you sooner, but everything happened so fast," he said, his voice tinged with regret. "I don’t want to leave without saying goodbye. Can you come to the airport?"

You felt like you couldn’t breathe. Joao was leaving. Just like that.

Lila sat up beside you, watching your expression shift from confusion to sadness. She didn’t know what was happening yet, but she could tell something was wrong.

You swallowed hard, gripping the phone tighter. "Yeah," you said, voice barely above a whisper. "I’ll be there."

Joao let out a small breath, like he was relieved. "Okay. I’ll see you soon."

When you hung up, Lila grabbed your shoulders. "What happened? What’s wrong?"

You blinked, trying to process it all. "Joao’s leaving. He’s going on loan to Milan. Tonight."

Lila’s mouth fell open. "What the hell?!"

"He wants me to come to the airport so we can say goodbye."

Lila was already jumping off the bed. "Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!"

The drive to the airport was a blur. You stared out the window, trying to keep yourself together, but the lump in your throat was growing by the second.

"He’s going to come back, you know," Lila said, glancing at you. "It’s just a loan. He’s not leaving forever."

You nodded, but it didn’t make it hurt any less.

By the time you arrived, the departures terminal was busy with travelers rushing around, but you only had eyes for one person.

And then—you saw him.

Joao stood near the check-in area, hoodie pulled over his head, hands tucked into his pockets. But when he saw you, his whole face softened.

You barely took two steps before he was in front of you, looking down at you with those warm, familiar brown eyes.

"Hey," he said softly.

You swallowed. "Hey."

His gaze flickered over your face, like he was trying to memorize every detail. "I didn’t want to leave without seeing you."

You nodded, trying to smile, but your throat was tight. "I’m really gonna miss you, Joao."

His brows furrowed, and then suddenly, his hand was cupping your cheek, his thumb brushing gently against your skin. "Don’t cry," he murmured. "I’ll come back."

You let out a shaky breath. "You promise?"

His lips quirked up in the smallest, saddest smile. "I promise."

And then—he kissed you.

Soft, warm, lingering. Like he wanted to stay in this moment forever. Like he didn’t want to leave at all.

Lila, standing a few feet away, practically squealed under her breath. "Oh my God."

But just as you melted into the kiss, something inside you snapped.

You suddenly pulled back, heart racing.

Joao blinked in confusion. "What’s wrong?"

You didn’t even think before you said it. "I’m going with you."

Joao’s eyes widened. "What?"

"You can’t," he stammered, looking completely overwhelmed. "You have a life here—"

"Yes, she can," Lila interrupted, stepping forward with a wicked grin. "I’ll pack your stuff and send it to you. Go."

You turned to her, heart pounding. "Are you sure?"

Lila rolled her eyes. "Babe. The love of your life is about to get on a plane. Go."

Tears welled in your eyes, but this time, they weren’t from sadness. You threw your arms around Lila, hugging her tightly. "I love you so much."

She laughed. "I know. Now get out of here before I start crying too."

You turned back to Joao, who was still staring at you like he couldn’t believe this was real.

"You really want to come with me?" he asked, voice soft, uncertain.

You smiled, taking his hand in yours. "There’s nowhere else I’d rather be."

For a moment, he just looked at you, his lips parting like he wanted to say something. But then, instead of speaking—he kissed you again.

Lila sat across from you, chewing on a piece of toast with a knowing smirk. "So," she started, dragging out the word. "Are we gonna talk about last night? Or are you just gonna sit there pretending like you didn’t have a moment with Joao freaking Félix?"

You groaned, stirring your coffee just to have something to do. "Lila, it was just—"

"Just what?" she cut in. "A coincidence that he played like an absolute disaster while looking at you every five minutes? Please. That boy was distracted."

You rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t fight the tiny smile tugging at your lips. "Okay, maybe he looked a few times."

Lila snorted. "A few times? Babe, he looked at you more than he looked at the ball."

You laughed, shaking your head. It was ridiculous, wasn’t it? You were just a face in the crowd. Yet… the way he kept looking at you, the way he smiled so shyly—it felt real. And the way your stomach flipped just thinking about it? Yeah, that was real too.

He was wearing a hoodie and joggers, looking more relaxed than last night, but still… Joao. Next to him was Pedro Neto, who was talking animatedly while glancing around the café.

And then Joao’s eyes landed on you.

The moment stretched.

His expression flickered—first, a flicker of recognition, then something softer, something unreadable. His lips parted slightly, like he hadn’t expected to see you. But before you could react, his face went pink, and he quickly looked away, rubbing the back of his neck like he was trying to play it cool.

Lila sucked in a sharp breath. "Did you see that?" she hissed. "Oh my God, he knows you."

Your heart was in your throat. "No, he doesn’t."

"Are you joking? He just looked at you like you personally ruined his life in the best way possible."

Before you could even process what was happening, Pedro’s eyes followed Joao’s and locked onto you. A slow, mischievous grin spread across his face as he looked between you and Joao. Then, before Joao could react, Pedro shoved him forward.

Joao stumbled, barely catching himself before he nearly knocked over a chair. His face turned an even deeper shade of red as he shot Pedro a glare, but Pedro just laughed, clapping him on the back before turning toward the counter like he had nothing to do with any of this.

Joao stood there awkwardly for a second, shifting his weight like he was debating whether to stay or bolt.

And then, finally, he looked at you.

"Um." He cleared his throat, his accent thick in the single syllable. His voice was softer than you expected. Hesitant. "Can I sit here?"

Your brain short-circuited.

Lila answered before you could. "Oh, absolutely." She nudged your foot under the table. "Right here is perfect."

You shot her a look but couldn’t fight the smile forming on your lips. Slowly, you nodded. "Yeah. Of course."

Joao let out a breath, looking relieved but still a little shy as he pulled out the chair next to you. "Thanks," he murmured, running a hand through his hair again. He hesitated before glancing at you, his lips twitching like he wanted to smile but wasn’t sure if he should.

Lila, completely ignoring the tension, leaned toward Joao with a grin. "So. Fun game last night, huh?"

Joao groaned, burying his face in his hands. "Don’t remind me."

Joao shifted in his seat, fingers fidgeting with the edge of a napkin as Lila grinned at him like she had just won the lottery.

"So, Joao," she began, sipping her coffee dramatically, "what exactly was going on last night? Because I have never seen someone so skilled look that clumsy in my entire life."

Joao’s face, already slightly pink, turned a deep shade of red. He let out a nervous chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "Uh—I don’t know what you’re talking about."

Lila gasped, placing a hand on her chest in fake shock. "Oh, really? So you didn’t spend half the game staring at my best friend instead of, you know, the ball?"

Your eyes widened as you turned to Joao, expecting him to deny it—to say Lila was exaggerating. But instead, Joao just froze, like a deer caught in headlights.

"I—I wasn’t—" he stammered, then shut his mouth like he had just realized there was no way out of this.

Lila leaned back in her chair, looking way too pleased with herself. "Mhmm. That’s what I thought."

Pedro, who had just returned from the counter with his coffee, snorted as he sat down. "Oh, don’t let him lie to you," he said, nudging Joao with his elbow. "This guy wouldn’t shut up about it after the game."

Joao groaned, dropping his head into his hands. "Pedro," he muttered, voice muffled.

You blinked. "Shut up about what?"

Pedro grinned. "Oh, just how he totally embarrassed himself and how he was ‘probably the worst player on the pitch’ because he was ‘too busy looking at someone in the crowd.’" He took a slow sip of his coffee, eyes twinkling with amusement. "I mean, I’m not saying that someone was you—"

Joao shot up so fast you thought he might actually combust. "Okay, that’s enough," he blurted, his voice an octave higher than usual. He practically lunged at Pedro, shoving him like he was trying to get him to shut up, but Pedro just laughed.

You could barely believe what you were hearing. Joao had actually been distracted by you. It wasn’t just in your head.

"You like her," Lila sing-songed, clearly enjoying how flustered Joao was.

Joao groaned, hiding his face in his hands again. "I hate all of you."

You giggled, warmth creeping up your neck. "I mean… it’s kind of cute," you admitted softly.

Joao peeked up at you through his fingers, his expression caught somewhere between embarrassment and hope. "Yeah?"

You nodded, biting your lip to hide your smile. "Yeah."

Lila clapped her hands together. "Well, since we’re all being so honest this morning…" She looked at you, then at Joao, her smirk widening. "I think you two should go on a date."

Joao choked on absolutely nothing. "What?"

You stared at her. "Lila—"

"No, no," she said, waving her hand dismissively. "I mean, come on. The mutual pining, the stolen glances, the literal tripping over air—" she turned to Joao—"by the way, 10/10 comedy, you really sold it—"

Joao groaned, covering his face again. "Please."

She ignored him. "All I’m saying is, this is fate. You two should go out. Today. Right now, actually."

You gaped at her. "Right now?"

She finished her coffee in one dramatic sip, then stood up. "Yep. Pedro and I have, uh, plans—"

Pedro raised a brow. "We do?"

She stomped on his foot under the table.

Pedro coughed. "I mean—yeah, totally, big plans, very important."

Joao, still red-faced, turned to you, rubbing the back of his neck. "You… don’t have to, if you don’t want to," he said quickly, his words rushed. "I mean, I get if this is weird, I just—"

You smiled, feeling your heart swell a little at how nervous he was. "I’d like to."

Joao blinked. "Wait, really?"

You nodded. "Yeah. I mean, after last night, I think we owe it to you to let you redeem yourself," you teased.

His face turned red again, but this time, he let out a laugh—soft and boyish, like he couldn’t believe this was happening.

Lila grinned, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "Perfect. Have fun, lovebirds."

And just like that, she and Pedro were gone, leaving you and Joao alone at the table, both smiling like idiots.

Joao cleared his throat, his fingers tapping against the table. "So… ice-cream?"

You laughed. "Ice-cream sounds great."

And as you both stood up to leave together, you couldn’t help but think—Lila had been right.
