Is “La La Land” Based On The Spanish Musical “The The Land”?
Above Average / by David Ingber / February 24, 2017
“La La Land” has deservedly received critical acclaim for its unique storytelling, gorgeous cinematography, and top-notch performances. However, the media — whether intentional or not — seem to have completely ignored the 2011 independent Spanish musical film “The The Land,” upon which the American cinematic darling may entirely be based.
“The The Land” was written and directed by visionary filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, pairing the incomparable America Ferrara and Benicio del Toro as, respectively, an actress and flamenco musician who both move to Barcelona to pursue their dreams.
Representatives from “La La Land” deny any wrongdoing.
Shameless ripoff?
“There are certainly some parallels, but nothing more than simple jumping off points,” noted “La La Land” executive producer Fred Berger. “I mean, that movie was in Spanish, so we really have no way of knowing what the plot was.”
We may never really know exactly how much inspiration the filmmakers of “La La Land” took from Almodóvar’s creation, but we do know that, three years prior to the release of “The The Land,” the Alfonso Cuarón-helmed Mexican musical “La La Tierra” hit theaters. The beloved cult classic short film eventually served as the basis for the third movie in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
