Every AO3 author is like "oh no this chapter is too long" or "fuck this was supposed to be a one-shot but now it's multichapter" but I'm out here like "I wanted to write something long and epic but the important scene happened in a 200 word paragraph and now idk what to add."

Anyway now that I've written a few things, here are my tips for if you are also like me and tend to err on the side of not writing enough.

Reread your own fic a few days later (it has to be after a long enough break that you don't remember what you wrote exactly) and fill in gaps where you notice lack of detail or the pacing being too fast.

Give your characters internal monologues (I don't have one so this took a while for me to figure out lol) and write out their thoughts if the thoughts are interesting and not obvious from the rest of the scene.

If you are an artist dabbling in fic writing, draw your scenes and figure out what parts of the drawing are important to the visual vibe but your audience wouldn't know existed and make sure to describe them.

It's ok to have filler! Use the not directly plot relevant scenes to establish your characters' personalities and relationship dynamics. Give them time to rest and just be themselves.

Get a beta reader who has the "I write too much" problem to balance you out.
