i think yes, i think let people enjoy things is an all or nothing commitment.

If you take the incestuous codependency out of TCOAAL, there's basically nothing left of the characters, plot, or themes, so I have to assume the people who excise one of the siblings for the sake of an OC x Canon ship or butcher the Graves' personalities are in it for the game's aesthetics only. The phenomenon annoys me. TCOAAL is a cleaver-sharp critique of capitalism, Christianity, the nuclear family, and patriarchy, not a Pinterest moodboard. Even if you don't ship the Graves siblings, ignoring the lifelong influence they have exerted on each other, or else making Andrew into an emo daddy dom who did nothing wrong or Ashley into a nymphomaniac yandere goth gf, is antithetical to the source material and politically infantile.

It's just so bizarre to me when some tcoaal fans say how they avoid the Questionable Route, and the Shots and Such route—for the sole purpose of "Avoiding the incest". I understand that incest is a heavy topic for many, but so is murder, cannibalism, etc. All of these factors make the story what it is, not just that but it makes the characters who they are.

You can see that no matter what route you go down, even with the cliffhanger ending you can see that Andrew and Ashley having incest in their already toxic relationship is just how they ARE. It's how they came to be who they are. It's a very important part of their characters—it shows just how normal this part of their relationship really is. This game doesn't justify anything about their relationship in the slightest. In fact, it shows just how WRONG their relationship really is.

Their relationship is very real to me. By real, I don't mean "Oh wow they're so cute together I ship them!!" No! It means that their unhealthy relationship is very much REAL. These abusive, toxic relationships exist in real life. It exists.

Incest isn't just some consensual right mind act that people DECIDE to commit. A lot of the time in real life, incest is nonconsensual. It is abusive and traumatizing. Andrew and Ashley abuse and traumatize each other with EVERYTHING they possibly can.

People treat incest as more of a "hot taboo relationship dynamic", rather than a form of abuse, or rather a trauma response. Which both apply to Andrew and Ashley.

SIDE NOTE: This also applies vice versa to people who go down those routes ONLY for the "gravecest appeal". I won't get into shipping discourse here, but my point is it's good to acknowledge my points above no matter where you stand with this. And ty for reading if you got this far ^^
