Hundreds of years of Christian misinformation on the spirit world has led to the belief that there are only two types of spirits on earth: trapped human souls, and non-human demonic entities. The reality is much more complicated than that.
The Norse had a belief in spirits that were connected to the land as well as their clan or family. They believed these entities to be guardians of their lands, of their kin, and they may have even been tied to or connected with the ancestors.
As well, they believed that the spirits of their ancestors blessed their lands and made them fertile, which is what their decaying bodies would have done. Pleasing and honoring the ancestors as well as the gods ensured a bountiful harvest, and that required a balance with nature.
Theres a diverse sub-set of unique and potentially powerful and dangerous entities, some benevolent, and some not so much, that extends into the 9 realms of the World Tree and beyond. It’s almost impossible to get a scope of the grand scale of the spirit world, especially when compared to our own. These entities have come to be known as different things in different places the world over.
Spirits also have diverse reasons for being here. They might belong to the land, or may be wandering. They could be guarding something, lending power to something, exploring, they could be trapped in some cases, or could be living off of something. Each spirit has it’s own wants, desires, and needs. For example: most spirits that I would label demonic are part of a class of entities whose job it is to basically bring elements of strife to disrupt order. They feed off of chaos, and often endanger humans and trap other souls in order to feed. They can be tricky to deal with, but without them our world would not function. They are a necessary part of our world’s spiritual ecosystem. I believe this interplay between chaos and order, or as I prefer to think of it, creation and destruction, allows our planet and all it’s realms to continue it’s existence in relative peace. Demons are kind of like the wild fires of the spirit world. When things get too gummed up, demons come in and wipe things out, allowing for new energies to move in and grow.
These realms of our world are like interwoven layers of the same massive fabric, each one is it’s own thread, with it’s own rules, but very much tied to the larger whole. Most people go their whole lives without ever realizing the fabric is there, but some lucky few of us, for one reason or another, are called to step beyond the veil and try and understand the unseen worlds.
One thing I am absolutely certain of is this: The Spirit World and it’s inhabitants belong here, just as much as the rest of us. The more we understand, or try to understand, about the spirit world the more we will understand and appreciate nature itself. It’s going to take a lot of time a lot of healing to mend the rift between us as humans and the nature and spirits we rely on. But with dedicated individuals I believe our future can begin to look more aligned with the needs of our natural world. As we attempt to understand the different diverse elements that make up our witchy world, we can seek to communicate with our planet in a new way. We can listen to the things she tells us she needs, and maybe together we can start a movement for her that will echo on for generations, creating real and palpable change. Maybe we too can become part of the host of spirits trying to right the wrongs of human destruction.
People have this misconception surrounding hauntings and spirits. They feel that anything to do with the Spirit World is unnatural and doesn’t belong there, and should be banished as soon as possible.
But spirits are diverse. And they are just as much a part of our world as we are. Witchcraft isn’t evil for attempting to conjure “unnatural” spirits. Sometimes a good haunting is exactly what a place needs in order to heal and grow, and there is absolutely nothing unnatural about that.
It’s all just part of a grand process. It’s an ecosystem of energies, this universe of ours, and we’ve barely scratched the surface of understanding any of it.

Let go of control and step into that place where the mind and the universe are one in the same. Could anything be real if our mind cannot see it? Reality is nothing but images in space, dancing across the starlight in a never ending journey.

I believe our creativity as humans is what gives us access to magick. That gift to take part in creation alongside the gods gives us power, and I think inspiration is nothing short of divine intervention.

Nobody asked and I don’t really care, but here is a playlist of over 24 hours of music that makes me, at least, feel like a Viking. Specifically, like a pagan Viking running naked through the woods chasing deer.

If someone wants to like recreate this in Spotify I wouldn’t be mad.
Also, yeah, I listen to these while I do… well, pretty much everything. But yes, rituals 😉
PS- you have to have Apple Music to access it. Don’t be mad! That’s just where I listen to music 😭

Worry Stone River Spell
Variations of this spell probably exist, but this spell is one that I thought of to help relieve anxiety and worry. Since I live in Philly, we have lots of rivers and creeks and such that run through the city and our neighborhood, making this spell so simple and easy.
Here’s what you do:
Take a stone. Any ol’ stone will do. Could even be a chunk of concrete. It really doesn’t matter what it looks like or anything.
Worry the fuck out of your worry while holding the stone tight. Cry about it, ask the hard questions, feel it good and feel it strong. Channel all that energy into stone.
Chuck in the river, saying, “May the waters of the river wash away the worry places upon this stone.”
That’s it! Pretty simple and easy to do depending on how accessible a river is to you. But honestly, any body of water should do, so long as it’s natural (or large- on account of reservoirs and such). Even a puddle could do in a pinch.
Let me know if you try this spell and how it works for you!

Rune of the Day

Hagalaz-
And as I stared into the crystals’ surface, I saw beside me two beings of great power, wreathed in smoke and the wriggling roots of great trees. When they spoke, it was guttural and dark, and a chill had filled the room, darkness creeping in from the corners.
“Temper your chaos, lest you lose control,” said the creature on my right.
The creature, left, spoke at distance, tasting foul, “Your chaos is a gift-“
“-CURSE!” The creature right screamed in my ear, “And one that will see the ruin of all!”
“Chaos is not a curse, Brother,” says the great spirit left, “You can use it-“
The voice came closer, hot breath in my ear, “TO START A WAR!” I flinched back, but my eyes never left the surface of the crystal, fearing what I might see, “Get revenge on those who have hurt you-“
I began to imagine it- to see a world left to burn in the wake of my revenge, my pure chaos. A power surged up inside my chest, burning hot like the fires of a great forge. I felt anger deep within my bones, ready to wage this war the creature spoke of.
“WOLF!” I hear the cry like shattering glass in a cave. It’s my familiar, an Owl, pulling me from trance. “It’s time to focus on a different rune.”
