it's the way Milchick tells Miss Huang how she has to "eradicate from your essence childish folly", then repeating that to himself as well as "grow up", then Mark and Helly sitting under a made-up tent, much like children. Dylan having his first kiss with his wife but more importantly, it's his childlike contentment with the simple things that make his wife lie to his outie. It's then Helena talking to Mark at the restaurant and saying "I'm, like, the head of the company, Mark" in such a childish manner, a teenager who wants to boast about something that isn't real. when i was a child/teen/young adult i had a moderate case of OCD, and anyway one of the things it made me do was think "you are a bad person if anyone can hear you breathing" (lol) so i spent years training myself to breathe as shallowly as possible so that no one could hear me. which is obviously like. bad for your health. anyway unfortunately i was Very successful at this and so now i breathe in a deeply fucked way without even thinking about it, and i do not know how to reverse this process and train myself to breathe normal again. so it goes.

It’s pretty obvious (to me) that, of them both, Illario most intentionally emulates Caterina while Lucanis kind of resists it and, in so doing, one consistently fails to meet expectations while the other exceeds them. There is bias there that applies to this outcome, as we know, with Lucanis being the favorite. I know people headcanon what outside influences Lucanis might have had that made him turn out the way he did. But what this actually brings up, for me, is in what ways does Lucanis emulate Caterina both intentionally (as we see with reciting the nursery rhyme, his concept of family, his dedication to contracts) as well as unintentionally (being hypercritical of Illario). Something that stuck out with the difference in their relationship between TWJ and Veilguard wasn’t actually that it was all that inconsistent (though admittedly flattened) but rather that it was so easy to recognize Lucanis trying and failing to be how he used to be because he’s been fundamentally changed both by his experience in the Ossuary, becoming an abomination, and now losing Caterina.

While he’s grieving who he used to be, what he can no longer be, and losing one of his last family members that is where you see Caterina in him the most. Particularly in a hardened Lucanis. At his worst moments. When he’s criticizing Illario, himself, Davrin to a certain degree. Even when he’s got tunnel vision when he’s explaining what will happen to Treviso if Rook chooses not to help, he completely disregards that innocent people in Minrathous will also be harmed until Neve says something. Yes, that is because he cares deeply about his home (as Neve does hers and, arguably, a political coup is horrible for all of them which is the angle she takes because she doesn’t expect empathy for Dock Town to convince anyone) but it’s the way he speaks about it that is so obviously influenced by Caterina’s take care of your own house first kind of mindset (though I think we’d all disagree with her on what care entails here pls don’t take me the wrong way) that underscores that moment.

You can even almost see it in his reaction to Neve’s reaction to how he says it. He’s still the deeply empathetic and kind person we know him to be in spite (lol) of his upbringing but it’s those knee-jerk reactions that I’m talking about. Something something his kindness and empathy are intentional choices as opposed to being necessarily inherent. Rather, he has to intentionally choose his nature over his nurturing over and over again because of the way he was raised which makes it that much more impactful when he does do so, out of rebellion or otherwise, especially when it’s to his disadvantage. But it’s not always consistent! It’s not always his first reaction to things! And that’s where those little slivers of Caterina come in.
