Polar (2019)

Okay, I have to preface this by saying this film might actually be one of my top three ever? It's now an absolute favourite of mine (and not just because of Mads...although it doesn't hurt he plays the protag). I definitely plan to rewatch this again on some late night by myself, I really did enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone (the critics' reviews are objectively wrong, I have come to the conclusion that movie critics don't know shit about what they're writing on).

Tiny bit of spoilers ahead, but nothing super major to the plot.

Started this for Mads and, well, I'm not gonna lie, also stayed for Mads.

But also because this film was just genuinely good — it had me hooked from the start and kept my attention, which is a pretty hard feat for anything to accomplish (blame my ADHD brain).

Even though I'm not normally one for sex/intimacy scenes (aroace spectrum pals, where you at? (although I will take the Mads content because Special Interest) also I generally dislike romance in action, personal opinion that if it doesn't contribute to the plot it's just pandering and should not be there but in Polar the seduction and sex that happens isn't just to appeal to some romance audience but seems to for the most part serve an actual purpose, like distracting the mark) or super cheesy violent action flicks (which, wow, a lot of gore but eh — although it didn't bother me, I think Hannibal kinda fucked up my measure for that and my only comment on the killing is that it just doesn't compare to the artistry of Hannibal, lol — although really the injections bothered me more, god I hate needles).

The pacing and formatting wasn't overly drawn out or saturating your screen with the same scene for far too long. I quite enjoyed the quick, snappy, nature of cuts in Polar. Definitely a style of directing that worked for me personally and which I liked, although I can understand if not everyone likes that.

Speaking of, the cinematography was just, ughhhh. So nice. Just the shots in general, the way it's filmed, but also the contrast between A-team (bright, youthful, energised) and Duncan (subdued, darker, wiser) conveyed the tonal message so well.

The soundtrack too — you could really tell when and what you were seeing and the mood for each scene was perfectly set.

I have to make a comment on the naked-man-murder-sprees because damn, love me some of those. Gotta say Duncan has quickly risen to one of my favourite Mads characters (although I have that opinion about basically every Mads character).

And Mads, wow. He's always incredible but damn, loved him in this. He's just so good at it. He brought Duncan to life — and that, for an actor, is incredible. Being able to portray a character so well they become a separate entity, what they are meant to be to the best of all abilities. Anyway he was perfect, as always, and I'm so glad I picked up this film whilst working my way through his filmography.

I do have to say this film in particular has sucked me into the HEU. I mean, just look at Duncan as a man and a character. I understand the cross-universe ships so much now. Like I could just see Will Graham adopting Rusty (R.I.P) and living cabin-hermit-woodsman life at the lake with Duncan. Literally perfect. So I will be needing more Duncan content, absolutely, probably in the form of 100k+ fics or something.

And finally, the story. It was alright, a bit cheesy but, well, it's an action film. Not stand-out innovative genius or anything but it was absolutely fine. Definitely a bit more interesting than your regular action movie because Duncan is in no way a good person and he's aware of that. A morally grey character definitely allows for more freedom in exploring them/their motivations than your traditional goody-two-shoes hero or Bond. I think the way it is conveyed to the audience definitely helped because the movie just gave it that much more depth with all the creative flashback shots and themes.

All-in-all, I did really enjoy this movie. It may even be one of the rare few gems I come back to watch again. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did but I'm really glad I did. I think it was a great movie and I would definitely recommend it.

Additional note just to mention the characters' superhuman abilities to survive what should definitely have killed them way sooner. But artistic license and all, it makes for an entertaining film.

The eyepatch deserves its own mention. <3 (and that black turtleneck).

Do go watch this it's incredible. Even if it's just for Mads.

Okay, but please consider being a Zoan Cat user and accidentally getting “adopted” by a pirate crew after being mistaken for a regular ass cat. You honestly thought they knew you were a human at first, and by the time you realized they didn’t, it had been long enough that revealing yourself would’ve been awkward af, and you were then curious about how long it would take them to figure you out. So instead you stfu and be a relatively good lil’ ship cat.

You get free food, plenty of comfy places to nap in, and lots of scritches and attention from big men who’re surprisingly giddy to have a tiny cat on board. Why on Earth would you want to ruin that??

You get away with it for months. And the ONLY reason you get caught is because someone does something so unbelievably dumb that you absentmindedly say out loud “Damn, we’re really reaching new levels of stupid here.” You could hear a mouse fart in stunned silence that followed as you realize your inside thought did NOT stay inside, and now you want nothing more than to just disappear into the floor.

Shockingly enough, you’re forgiven and continue on as the ship cat; except now you can properly converse and interact with everyone. HOWEVER you’re still subjected to being picked up and held out towards everyone like Simba whenever you’re fully transformed into a cat lmfao

Steve, hunched over the counter with half a burger in his mouth: what are you doing up?

The video continues for five minutes and is just the two of them eating. Eddie checks Steve’s levels while he stands behind Steve, arms around his waist, swaying them from side to side.

AND?? she’s still a kinder and braver person than most of us will ever be. and same with nico. he is an amazing person but he has also done some things that are absolutely not okay. you know why? because no one is perfect. it’s okay to accept that our favorite characters do bad stuff but are still good people.

It's such a funny one I honestly find it impossible to get mad at even when people mistake it for an actual truth about the characters but JUST TO MAKE IT CLEAR

THIS is how marcille reacts when Falin is predictably just as enthusiastic about eating monsters as her brother was.

That is not the face of a woman who thinks this trait is lovely and endearing as long as it's exhibited by the girl she loves. That is the face of a woman who is taking 7d8 psychic damage and yet knows deep in her heart she won't like Falin any less for it.

The way young Marcille reacts to Falin eating berries Marcille can't recognize but Falin knows are safe is pretty similar to how she reacts to eating monsters years later, albeit with more fear than disgust. The difference in her relationships with Laios and Falin isn't just that she's attracted to Falin, it's because the Touden siblings, while similar, are in fact different people. Not just genderswaps of each other.

Also, I think you all already know this, but just to say it: she doesn't actually hate Laios for any of his freak tendencies either. He's one of her best friends. She's just a lot quicker to be outwardly exasperated with him while she's quieter about it with Falin.

It keeps hitting me how honest Foggy is in comparison to Matt. Like he keeps hitting Matt with the most sincere heartpunching sentiments you rarely ever get from people. He expresses love and care openly and most importantly verbally. Clearly. Unmistakably.

"I know I can do this alone but I don't want to do this without you."

"You are my partner"

"I don't want to lose you"

"If this is what you say we should be doing, I trust you."

"You dragged me into this and I can't thank you enough for it."

For most part it looks like it leaves Matt as hit by it as anyone would be, if not more. I can't overstate the importance Foggy must have in Matts life and the loss he must feel every time they are not in each others life. Foggy is just the kindest purest soul he's ever met right? 🙉

You know what really hurts about Faifa. His care is genuine. No matter how many people the attention is divided towards, it always comes from a genuine place. But the issue with people that have such a bright light about them is that it is very easy to dismiss their care because it's not special. He smiles to freely, cares too casually, offers help too easily so it's taken for granted.

"This is just the way he is" is so commonly thrown around like it's a bad thing even in the show. Like being a caring person in this horrible horrible world is not the hardest thing to do. And so when everyone says "he doesn't know how to love", it seems even Faifa believes it, like he's also not being genuine somehow.

You cannot ever convince me Faifa doesn't know how to love when he actively tries to be the one positive person in everyone's life. He makes sure that no matter what is going on in their life and how unacceptable they feel they know that they are loved. Whatever Faifa's intentions, he's the guy that asks if they're okay, if they need anything and does it for them, and that matters.

But they dismiss all of it- because "that's just how he is". Like it doesn't take active effort to notice people and make them feel seen and appreciated. They think it comes naturally to him- like this wasn't a skill that trauma probably taught him, because they don't care to learn more. It makes me mad for him!

Yotha is so shocked that Fa needed advice from his dad about people because Faifa had to grow up so fast that he hasn't had to ask for advice before!! He thought Fa had to be the one who's heart was broken.

Funny thing is. It's been broken for a while. His mother abandoned him. That's the kind of heart break no kid ever gets over. Fa didn't even get a chance to be angry about it. (Funnier thing is if you think your brother is heartbroken, Yotha, why tf aren't you doing something about it?? You know damn well he would.)

And this is obviously going to be the central conflict of the FaifaWine love story, right? When your light shines so bright no one will ever truly believe they are special. Despite Fa being clear as day about the way Wine makes him feel, he's still going to offer himself as a rebound - a practice run- until ig Tor comes back into Wine's life.

Faifa will fight for everyone except himself. So I don't think he'll fight to have Wine, i think he'll fight for Wine to be happy even at the cost of his own happiness. That comes from a genuine place too. And it's going to be so heartbreaking to watch.

And Wine runs away from all his problems. So he isn't going to confront Faifa to explain his feelings. He's going to be stuck in the dark believing he's just another person who gets to be in Faifa's aura receiving all his kindness. BUT IT IS GENUINE AND WINE IS SPECIAL. The question is, how is Faifa supposed to convince him of that?

They are so perfect for each other. They need each other. But they are also going to be in their own way.
