Mass Effect 2: The Case for the Heroine's Journey

I have a theory. And I think it's something others--especially other storytellers--might find interesting. It explains why some people absolutely adore Mass Effect 2 while others (not as many, in my experience!) think dealing with all the companions and their personal quests is boring or irrelevant.

What it boils down to is the difference between the Hero's Journey and the Heroine's Journey. There a couple of takes on the Heroine's Journey (ranging from more philosophical and psychoanalytical to more story-based), and I'm going to be pulling hard from the story-based iteration, which author Gail Carriger has written a fabulous book about. I highly recommend it.

One thing I want to mention right off the bat: the gender, sex, or sexuality of your protagonist has nothing to do with whether they're a hero or a heroine.

Everyone and their dog knows the Hero's Journey. A literal ton of writing advice refers to the Hero's Journey as if it's the be-all and end-all of narrative (thanks Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Christopher Vogler); it ain't called the monomyth for nothing.

But if a part of you grits your teeth every time it gets trotted out as The One Right Way to tell a story that sells or a story people love, you may have your mind blown by the concept of the Heroine's Journey. Every single one of you who tingles with excitement at the very thought of found family (or romance, for that matter)? Yeah, strap in, we're going for a ride.

I don't want to go into a lot of detail about the Hero's Journey; it's everywhere. You know it even if you don't realize you know it. So for brevity's sake, I'll give you wikipedia's one-sentence description: a hero goes on an adventure, is victorious in a decisive crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. Luke Skywalker. Everyone always talks about Luke Skywalker. And on the surface, Mass Effect could seem like a Hero's Journey, right?

According to Gail, a Hero's Journey boils down to

A repeated pattern of withdrawal and return, and those withdrawals are voluntary, as voluntary withdrawal and increased isolation yields self-reliant strength.

Victory is in isolation and asking for help is bad.

But looking at it (especially ME2) through the lens of the Heroine's Journey is where it gets interesting.

In her book, Gail notes that not every element has to be present to qualify a story as a Hero/Heroine's Journey and the events don't have to happen specifically in this order.

In the Heroine's Journey

The heroine's withdrawal is involuntary; something is broken and she must abdicate the power she had in order to rebuild, retrieve, or reunite with what was taken or broken.

Victory is a group effort; asking for help is a sign of strength; and the protagonist realizes that while she can't do everything herself, she has surrounded herself with people whose skills she can effectively deploy.

In the Heroine's Journey, the DESCENT is involuntary. Something is done to her or taken from her, and it breaks her familial network.

In ME2, obviously, uh, the thing that's taken from Shepard is her own life. Of course, instead of that being the end of the story, it's the inciting incident that leads to the involuntary withdrawal from her found family on the Normandy, her connection to the Alliance, and her Spectre status. Her home is literally destroyed. And then, kinda hilariously, she wakes up in the literal underworld. You know. Cerberus, dog that guards the gates of Hades?

I play a very Paragon Shepard and haven't played Renegade, so I can't speak to that. However, I can tell you that my Paragon Shep wakes up working for Cerberus and promptly proceeds to gain more Renegade points in the first couple of missions--hell, the first couple of conversations with Miranda, Jacob, and TIM--than she got in all of ME1.

Jacob: Do you trust me, Shepard? Shepard: NO, omg.

I've probably played ME2 five or six times with this Shepard, and she always strikes me as a bit off, a bit manic even, until she sees Tali. And she doesn't really start to settle or feel like herself until Archangel takes off his helmet, believes she is who she says she is, and without hesitation agrees to follow her into hell.

(As the protagonist in his own story, Garrus is also a heroine on a Heroine's Journey, by the by. Shepard's death breaks his network; C-Sec and the Council's denial of the Reapers leads to his abdication of power in the hunt for justice. His underworld is Omega. He puts together a surrogate family to fight injustice; he learns to delegate; he doesn't do it for glory... And then Sidonis's betrayal breaks the new family and sends him on another cycle. My theory, however, is that if you let him kill Sidonis, his journey takes on the revenge aspect of a Hero's Journey instead of the family and reunification structure of a Heroine's Journey.)

In ME2, the arc of recruiting an ally, earning their loyalty, and deploying their suggestions to improve the entire team's chances of survival is repeated over and over; this is the SEARCH of the cycle. And anyone who's ever tried to race their way through ME2 without doing all those loyalty missions or without scanning all those planets for resources finds out pretty quick why they're important.

So, while you potentially could race through ME1 without even recruiting several teammates (did you even know you can play that game without recruiting Garrus???), thereby making it much more of a Hero's Journey of the Strength of the Individual, you really can't do that in ME2 without massive casualties. You need the people around you. You need to build relationships. And you need to learn to delegate well, or things will absolutely fall apart during the end run.

Even the stated mission of ME2 is more Heroine's Journey. You're not fighting for glory; in fact, most of the people who used to be in awe of you now think you're a crazy terrorist. You're fighting to stop what's happening to human colonists.

The end run is so satisfying specifically because it leans in to the Heroine's Journey of information gathering and network building. You cannot beat the game as a solitary soldier. You cannot achieve a good outcome--minimal deaths, etc.--without having spent a lot of time and effort gaining the loyalty of your crew and then knowing how to deploy them to best serve the whole team.

ME2 is a story about finding and building a family after the last one is broken.

And though it's a whole other can of worms, I actually think the reason why the ending of ME3 was ultimately so unsatisfying for so many (again, not all) is because the majority of the game is once again a Heroine's Journey--team building and information gathering across the galaxy--but the endgame pulls the expected narrative out from under you. Instead of actually using the resources you've so carefully built, you're quite literally beamed up into complete isolation (weakness) and left to make a choice in isolation. It breaks the narrative promise that's been set up since the beginning of the game. And, whether you realize it or not, that's a huge part of why that lonely choice feels so hollow. Instead of a structured reunion and a rebuilt network, it's actually the broken family and involuntary descent that heralds the beginning of a new Heroine's Journey--not the the end of a successful one.

Also, incidentally? It's Heroine's Journeys that usually get satisfying instead of distracting-the-hero-from-his-real-mission romance, banter, fully realized side characters, and humor.

LED ad on blimp: Owned by Treeman, they stream holo-ads of the heroes they manage as the blimp flies around in the city. LED ads at lightrail station: Under direct management of the Commission, this is the most influential media source in the city. FOMO: the biggest platform on sharing and searching for hero information. Allows users to upload and share information, and is currently the mobile app with the most users. FOCUS: Under DOS, FOCUS is a website that mainly does traditional news, and one of the biggest media conglomerates independent from the Commission.

News media in the world of heroes

Due to Trust Values, scientists have made great discoveries and contributions in the fields of AI, material sciences, energy conversion, and bioscience. At the same time, media has grown alongside these improvements. In Year 8, a research lab using breakthroughs in AI and material sciences invented holoscreen technology (全息屏), and DOS released a series of ads of their heroes for the Hero's Tournament with tremendous success. Other hero agencies soon followed suit, and the city entered its holotech era.

College student 阿扎 (Azak??? Zac) invented a new algorithm using AI tech and big data calculations, making the new social media platform FOMO.

As competition is fierce, the pricing for ads are steep. Every hero agency is motivated to look into new ways to advertise their heroes effectively. With the arrival of holo tech, the types of ads have exploded, and traditional printed media exist alongside new types of media.

Personal commentary/theories: It's interesting to me that FOCUS, the news agency that Liu Zhen was working for (an subsequently quit), has ties to DOS. This explains why he'd want his daughter to sign with the company since he probably knows people there, but from the way he quit I do wonder if he actually trusts the company and whether Queen joining DOS was a way for him to spy on the hero management side of things—he seems to care a lot about his kid, but he was also distrustful of hero society when he quit/convinced that there's a conspiracy going on that the heroes and/or their agencies were involved in. There's also the fact that FOCUS, a subsidiary of DOS, is "the biggest media conglomerate independent from the Commission" that feels funny to me—wdym independent? DOS is heavily implied to be in the Commission as one of the top hero agencies and is the parent company of FOCUS!

Also, this basically confirms FOMO is owned by 阿扎 (Zac). My guess is that he's the young man lounging on a giant beanbag in ep 4? We know Treeman Shang and MG Rock at this point, so FOMO's owner is down to the older guy with his back to the viewers with glasses (who is likely to be Mikey from DOS from the visuals of ep 9 preview) and him. With Liu Zhen's news agency that he worked at in Year 23 (almost 2 decades ago from L0's story in Year 41) being a subsidiary of DOS, it makes more sense that the older guy is DOS's CEO rather than the younger guy, so the young guy is most likely Zac / owner of FOMO by process of elimination.

TBHX episode 9 rant

Oh it's going to be a proper rant this time. The conspiracy theorist in me is working so much OT that X is going to snap me into oblivion any time now.

Hey but because I'm totally normal about this, speaking of X...

...BROSKI WTF ARE YOU DOING HERE??

My previous theory (I don't even remember where I mentioned it earlier) that X is making and breaking the current hero roster is so validated right now. He definitely curated the current (well, what's in the website) top 10 with a purpose. At this point, wouldn't be surprised if he went and seduced Ms. Blazing Fire to create a cheating scandal too. My man complaining about working till midnight while he's busy taking the time to toss a coin to the witch, er, sacred maiden on his way home.

This is also now right before the Yang Cheng arc which means it's confirmed that X was operational by that time (not that most of us had any doubts). My ep 5 hypothesis that Lucky Cyan was just becoming popular before the Lin Ling arc is also now validated. It's also kind of sweet in hindsight that both Shang Chao and Yang Cheng went and got tickets for Cyan's first big performance (must've cost a pretty penny) for Xia Qing's sake.

I need to start one of those red-string-connected-mystery-boards.

The next big thing (for me): Trust Value, as always. It was confusing to see Cyan's go down to zero after she mentioned last ep that it's been high since she was small. Running theory (still) is that she's the child of a hero couple, she had trust value because of that which disappeared since it was never publicized that she survived the plane crash and thus people believed her dead. She didn't notice, because by that time it had already been replaced with the Sacred Maiden trust value instead.

I was wondering how she would get it back up after losing her lucky powers as a performer. Coins for good singing don't equate to trust value, after all.

On a somewhat related sidenote, hero agencies are really just PR firms for heroes. I'm not sure if I should be thanking Liu Zhen for bringing her to DOS's attention (but you seemed surprised they wanted to sign her on, why bring her up in the first place?).

But on the note of thanking people, I suppose I should thank these morons for bringing up her past and cultivating trust value, but really I was far too busy being thoroughly annoyed instead. Like fuck off and leave the poor girl alone! Ugh.

This shot is my favourite from the whole episode (which is saying a lot, I loved the animation and art style this entire ep) because you can see how people are just squinting at and recording the worshippers lmao.

But seriously, stop forcing your beliefs onto innocent children.

Oh but speaking of forcing your ideals on children...

Alright bro, spill the tea. Who were you, what did you do, why do your powers look so similar to the X hero couple's fire powers? HOW did it go from this to The Little MermaidTM? WHERE did the zombie powers come from?

WHAT is up with you and Bad Luck Calamity?

You give Luo a guitar that has weird effects. Why? You also abandon your own Sacred Maiden in favour of tussling with Luo in the escape scene. I'd almost be convinced that you wanted to separate the two more than you wanted to stop Cyan from getting away. Did you want to keep him around as leverage to force Cyan back when you wanted to? Is the guitar bugged? Are you torturing Luo for him to be bandaged in a locked up room two years after the escape? Too many questions gah. AND WHAT THE HELL DID YOU TELL THE GUY AT THE END?

Running theory: Luo's family was in the same plane that crashed, and you just blamed Cyan for his entire family being wiped out, becoming an orphan, and being branded bad luck.

Are there any other explanations because I would kill to know. Like there's no way this is a coincidence.

But going back to the escape scene, the whole thing is weird. Firstly (and this is just funny) how does wind blowing close the gate against the wind?? What was the animation physics department (is that a thing?) thinking?

Secondly why is the guitar this important, to the scene and to the ep? This is, mind you, the Guitar with Effects. I am suspicious. Very suspicious.

Thirdly what was up with that truck driver? Who's compelling him? His eyes were purple, but it's unlikely the Dean would disrupt his own intervention (unless he wants to act like the bad guy to drive Cyan away with the guitar, for whatever reason?) Do we know a hero/villain with hypnotic powers? I'm drawing blanks.

The only other possibility is that this was Luo, which would make sense, although we have to admit that was a surprising amount of good luck for a supposed bad luck person. This would also bolster the popular theory that Zombie Mode is Luo's powers going out of control because hey, that's also purple.

Just hoping the shared purple doesn't mean anything-

My conspiracy theorist brain hurts now.

Lastly, the art sequences in this episode and the colours were so beautiful (fitting for Lucky Cyan's moniker I suppose) I simply must ogle them.

Just stunning. Also is that song out yet, because I haven't been able to hunt it down.

Now that we've caught up to the YC arc in terms of timeline, I wonder what next week's ep will bring. Fresh trauma, no doubt.

SO DELTARUNE

I'm so incredibly excited that Deltarune finally has a release date! June 5th!!!!! Only [63] days! So with that in mind I wanted to share some pictures for the new content & a few thoughts

First, some new stuff from the trailer...

We start off with a really cute animation of Kris helping Susie up! I think this shows just how close the two have gotten in the last two chapters.

The "knock your socks off" act we saw teased during the Spamton Sweepstakes... we have a little more info about it now, apparently we have a limited amount of hearts we can use for this act. I can see this meaning you can only use the act a few times, or you have to do another act to get more hearts. This could also have to do with the amount of TP you have given that its at max in the teaser.

Here's our first look at a totally new mini game! It looks like something is coming for the soul and we have to use these shields to stop ourselves from getting hurt. Pretty simple. It makes me think of Undyne's green soul mechanic from Undertale! This time, however, it looks like our shields are... cats? That's what they look like to me, anyway. Considering who we see later in the teasers, it's possible this may have to do with Catti, although I find it more likely that it's either foreshadowing or for fun (since this is chapter 3).

I'm really excited about this mini game. Not because I'm any good at rhythm games (lol) but I just love the gang's new outfits! Kris is making me think of a rockstar with a popped out collar. Maybe something like Elvis...? (not exactly but similar!)

Anyway! While it's not visible in the trailer, it seems like this song with guitar hero-esque mechanics has lyrics being sung by Ralsei!! I wonder if it'll be similar to Don't Forget?

It seems like Chapter 3 is all about fun and unique mini games, which makes sense given what Toby said about chapter 3 being experimental and different from other chapters, more focused on gameplay. It goes well with the TV theme. You could imagine each mini game is like a skit on television.

Next we have this section of the trailer where Susie appears to be hanging onto something, then throwing Kris upward so they can hang on to a different something. Both Kris and Susie seem to be hue shifted. My first thought is that this likely has to do with the lighting, but it's definitely not clear.

You can also see that there's something falling in the first two images, which to me looks like glass or something, but this is also unclear.

At the end of the trailer we get glimpses of each of the chapters, and the ones from chapters 3 and 4 are interesting!

We see the antagonist from chapter 3, Mike or Tenna or whoever, and a hall in chapter 3 that has a similar hue-shifted effect like the screenshots above.

It seems obvious to me at this point that chapter 4, the one we've known less about, has a church-themed Dark World! We've seen Rudy mention that "tomorrow" he'll try to go to church, and we've also seen concept of art of Susie at a punch bowl (presumably getting that "sick fruit juice" Kris likes), as well as a red cup-themed Darkner.

In these newest teasers for chapter 4 we see angel imagery on the path Susie and Kris are running down and stained glass windows.

We also have two other teasers from the Deltarune steam page and a gothic style building on Deltarune's website.

If Jockington is part of this Dark World, it's very likely that Catti also is, which fits with her interest in the occult!

The two new characters we see remind me of a Japanese ghost a bishop chess piece (also a little bit like a communion wafer, but much less so). I could be wrong though, of course!

One last teaser we get on Deltarune's website is an image that presumably takes place between chapters 3 and 4, the same time period we think Susie mentions Kris's family in an earlier teaser.

It seems like this might be Sans's reaction to you snooping behind his house trying to get to his secret lab we see in Undertale. Especially with the way that Susie is positioned (looking down and in the grass). Seems very rude to do right in front of him!

That's all my thoughts for the time being! I'm disappointed we have to wait until June but I'm incredibly excited for the new release, especially now that we also have a price (25 for the whole game???? Oh my god Toby). I'll definitely be drawing rockstar Kris soon!

“Eh, small details,” the dorm leader quietly said. “They’ll get over it…eventually.”

He paused to snicker. “Look at them! It’s like all those classic horror movies coming to life. They pretend to be heroes but are scared.”

Diasomnia

What was this? One second, they were in their dorm; the next, the Diasomnia students stood in the heart of a funhouse filled with mirrors. They started at their twisted reflections, some eerie and others more comical than words could describe.

Lilia mischievously chuckled as he stared into a mirror that made his eyes huge and his mouth tiny. “Isn’t this a surprise? It’s like we are in another dimension.”

The dragon prince tilted his head and studied his reflection; the mirror made him look even taller and caused his horns to swirl higher. “How interesting. I wonder if these mirrors could show us secrets of other worlds.”

Savanaclaw/Scarabia

“Wow. That effect looked so real!” Kalim grinned and clapped, oblivious to the heaviness in the air.

“Kalim…that didn’t look like an effect,” Jamil quietly replied. He did his best to keep his voice steady because the vice leader of Scarbia didn’t want anyone to know he was nervous. The flickering lights didn’t help his situation.

Jack jumped when the door behind them slammed shut, but he could only growl under his breath, his voice refusing to cooperate with him. While the others were on edge, Leona grew more irritated and rolled his eyes. “It’s just a draft. Relax. All of you look like you saw a ghost.”

Pomefiore/Octavinelle

“Perhaps,” Jade mumbled. His eyes narrowed when a group of twisted and unnatural scarecrows loomed in the shadows of an opening in the maze. “But, I do wonder why the corn is rotten. And…I must say, those scarecrows look rather…lively.”

Azul adjusted his glasses and squinted at the nearest scarecrow. “Do you mean…the one that just moved its arm?”

“Excuse me?” Vil asked quietly, snapping his gaze to the scarecrows before scrutinizing them. “I see no movements. Azul, when was the last time you visited an optometrist?”

Heartslabyul

“Yeah, but we’re not supposed to be here, and I don’t think this is a set,” Deuce muttered, his eyes darting to the gravestones as though he was expecting a ghost to jump out any second. “This place is creepy.”

“I agree with Deuce – the heavy presence is alarming and -” Riddle exhaled softly but froze when he felt a strange feeling around his ankle. “Ace. Now is not the time for pranks.”

Startled, Ace looked at the dorm leader. “What’re you talking about? I’m right here.”

hey, you said your inbox is open and I was curious if you have any ideas for someone who can't get involved irl in things like protests and local antifa groups (physically disabled and incapacitatingly severe anxiety), and who can't get involved in online activism beyond reblogging stuff (personal reasons, difficult to explain)?

I've been considering trying to put together care packages for local unhoused people, but I'm poor and I'd have to convince someone to help me put everything together so idk how well that will go.

I don't want to sit around doing nothing.

Hey anon! I am very glad you reached out, and this is a question I get asked a lot by people IRL, so you are very much not alone here.

I think the first order of business is expanding your definition of activism. We have been done a great disservice by having activism framed for us as protests, charity, & singular heroes making speeches and changing hearts through celebrity. In reality, the smaller actions in your community have a much greater impact; and most of all, the things you personally have to offer make the greatest impact.

This diagram is specifically geared towards climate action, but really applies to all activism:

For you to be an effective activist/volunteer/community member, it's crucial to find the centre of that diagram, or else you're on a one-way ticket to burnout. Don't get caught up in trying to judge which is the most "important" activism, because that answer will be different for everyone. The most important thing you can do for the world is the thing you can do.

I've done lots of volunteering and volunteer management in multiple fields, and there really is lots of choice out there for things that suit you; anything from sorting files quietly in a back room to using computer knowledge (often VERY absent in community groups lol) to help with maintaining websites & promoting community events. One of my personal favourite volunteer shifts was acting as a helper to the organizers of a queer electronic music festival, running a "build your own synthesizer" workshop. Literally I was just ticking off names on a registration sheet and doing setup and fetching things, but it was one of the coolest things I've had the joy to be involved in.

The other plus here is that activists in a given city all usually have some social overlap. If you email, say, your local community centre, explain your interests & circumstances & skills, and ask what you could do - they might not have anything right that moment, but likely someone there will know a different group that needs something similar, or they'll have ideas for who you could try next. Even if you're not finding a lot online right away, have faith in the (slightly haphazard) offline community org social scene. Same deal if you get involved with something and realize it's not your thing after all - just be honest, and ask for help in finding something more suited to you. It's so, so common, and no one's going to get angry with you for wanting to help in ways you're better suited for.

Don't mistake me when I nudge you towards volunteering - there's a certain way that well-meaning (usually) liberals treat volunteering, like they're 'donating' their time as charity, and I am not advocating for that. I'm just saying that you really don't have to reinvent the wheel. There are structures in place run by people who know well how to do it. Part of the importance is the work itself; the file-sorting, the computer help, whatever. But another part is building connections with the people around you, and also letting those people benefit from the privilege of knowing you. And that will happen naturally over time. The muscle will grow as you use it more, even if you need to start with something that feels to you like it might not be enormously significant in the grand scheme of things. Maybe you move on to 'bigger' things, or maybe you gain new perspective and realize just how significant your contributions are after all.
