there are articles and videos talking about how youtube got sued for i think $30 billion for violating privacy laws! /info

i think google is just paying it all because they're a rich capitalist company but oh well. it's a start

This is inexcusable YouTube!

So, you all probably heard about the new update YouTube is going to roll out on the 13th, where they will estimate your age based on your activity on YouTube (videos you watch and search for, the comments you make, ect) and if they falsely flag you as a minor, you'd have to show them an ID to prove that your an adult.

This is wrong for so many reasons:

You can't definitively know someone's age by the types of videos they watch or even the comments they make (unless you state your age, but we all know the AI is going to ignore that). Some adults may enjoy more 'childish' content (Nintendo, Minecraft, My Little Pony, ect) while some teens/kids may enjoy more 'mature' content (Breaking Bad, Friday the 13th, ect) and there are also some other reasons why people might play certain videos (i.e. as background noise).

Even if you could tell someone age based on what videos they watch, the AI that YouTube uses isn't good at all, for example, that same AI interpreted a YouTuber (ItsBangSnap) knocking over her microphone in a video as child abuse and the channel got terminated as a result.

Having to show your ID violates your anonymity on YouTube and any comment or video you make will be linked to you as a person not just as a channel.

There are much better ideas for updates YouTube could've implemented for better 'child protection':

Having people manually enter their birthday onto their YouTube channel without an ID to make sure they're at least 13 and if they aren't, they would re-direct them to the YouTube Kids app.

Better yet, ACTUALLY BAN PORN ADS AND BOTS OFF THE PLATFORM!!!

I will probably be marked as a minor on YouTube due to me watching a lot of animations and the like even though I turned 18 not too long ago.

This update will only be implemented in the US for now but may reach other countries in the future (especially with recent UK and Australian laws).

So, spread the word! I don't have any other advice for now, I'm just making this post to spread awareness. If you know any ways to potentially bypass this like a free VPN of some sort, mention it to me.
