I’ll be forever grateful for this PTSD and trauma portrait. One of the best I’ve seen on TV.
The psychological trauma is every bit as real as the physical trauma.

This is amazing. I am absolutely amazed by the power of this Fandom. As a fan and as a psychologist.

Art is a powerful thing.
People receive it in different ways – always approaching it differently. It can be a friend in bright and dark times. A tourniquet for the wounded. Hope for the lost or those wandering in the bleakness that can plague this life.
Art is a powerful thing. On its own, it is what it is – a song, a painting, a dance, or a story. But its effects? What it can do?
Immeasurable.
#SaveCaskett. Because their story has done all of what you see here.

Kate Beckett is absolutely my favorite female character in TV. I believe her, I respect her. I have a lot in common with her. I love her story and their story. I’ve been watching Castle since the very first episode.
And I won’t be watching season 8 finale.
Thank you Stana for sharing your talent and for simply being you.

So... I noticed no alcohol in the opening scene in 8x16. So what...no more "Beckett is addicted" theory?

I’d like to add one more thing. We should remember that Kate was in therapy. I believe that it took at least 6-7 months. Of course we saw few imporant moments with Burke (and let me just say... those scenes are one of the best written psychotherapy scenes in TV). She discussed her shooting, her mother’s death, her relationship with Castle, but for sure she also discussed her ACA experience. Because if she didn’t she wouldn’t be able to be the person we saw in next seasons. I love that this character is so deep and complex and we have to look at the big picture here.
Kate Beckett and her…issues…
In psychology there is this term: Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACA). I believe that many of you consider this drinking in 8x15 as coping mechanism and drinking in general (Beckett) as a part of ACA syndrome. The truth is that it’s not so simple. There was time when psychologists described ACA as children who grew up in an alcoholic home and developed similar personality traits and characteristics as addicted parent. So those children should develop an addiction, right? No. Today we are sure that children may develop opposite patterns and traits.
Typical pattern? Well, adult children of alcoholics maitain control. Over feelings, behaviour, attitudes, thoughts. Over everything in personal life and at work. They avoid emotions and bury feelings since childchood. Therefore they are not able to express emotions easily and read tchem properly. ACA often are oversensitive, have low self-esteem and feel obligated to be perfect all the time. They also want to be accepted and desperately need somebody to care for them (they seek approval). Adult children of alcoholics are afraid to have fun because their inner child is frightened and stressed all the time. So they concentrate on work and be perfect. And that’s the point when many of ACA come to psychologists and look for help and support.
What about addiction? Sometimes they drink or use drugs, gamble etc. and become addicted. It might be the only way to cope with all these burdens and memories they know. On the other hand ACA may do not drink at all and avoid alcohol. They remember from the past what it can do, how parent reacted and how they felt. Sometimes ACA drink like people with no such experiences. There’s no pattern here. Of course we ask about alcohol using during therapy but we do not assume anything.
ACA is a very popular and quite complicated syndrome and you can read about it here: http://www.searidgealcoholrehab.com/article-adult-children-of-alcoholics.php
I’m writing this because recently I saw many posts concerning Beckett’s potential issues. From psychological point of view she is not typical ACA because she experienced abandonment issues when she was older. Of course it took its toll as you can see above by reading ACA description. But she also experienced trauma, and that’s why this is very complicated matter and interesting case study (maybe for whole article). In fact, in my professional opinion Kate Beckett is one of the most interesting and best written characters in TV. It’s not so simple: she came to Castle, wanted to be with him but needed time to think, they drank then well…it’s coping mechanism and she’ll become an alcoholic because of her past. Again, she’s not typical ACA, she doesn’t have past substance addiction problems and she made great progress during all those years (psychotherapy included) about her emiotions, relationship with Castle, her work and and potentially addictive area: her mother’s death. She managed to develop more adequate coping strategies. So please…more analysis (based on evidence), less emotions and fantasy. If you consider psychology of the character of course.
