it’s not enough to not be transphobic.

it’s not enough to not be transphobic. every time you permit a transphobic comment by one of your friends or colleagues without saying anything to correct them, you’re letting that colleague know you really wouldn’t do anything to stop trans people’s pain. your lack of defense is an implicit permission for your friend to say whatever they want—why shouldn’t they? their democrat friend, their “ally” friend didn’t say anything.

you’re not an ally to me if you’re not correcting the shitty people in your life. people who genuinely think i’m mentally ill for being trans certainly wont change their opinion at the behest of some “””unstable lunatic.””” this is on you, folks. don’t wait for the topic to come up and for that uncomfortable hush to fall over the room as you look to all your friends to appraise unspoken biases. do research, go to your trans friends’ pages (most of us post about our lives whether that be in articles or original posts like this) and be prepared when you’re in a group of your peers to bring up an issue affecting us.

“that military ban is so fucked up,” is not something a cis person should ever tell a trans person. we know it’s fucked up. every single day of our lives, at every turn, we’re faced with things equally fucked up, equally insidious, infinitely more invisible than a decree that our bodies aren’t even worth dying facedown thousands of miles away for oil and american imperialism. don’t tell us. tell your cis friends.

and understand, most of all, that agreeing to disagree is a privilege most of us can not afford. if, when, you reach a point in your conversation where you are both disagreeing and making no headway, think of how your status as cis is the only reason you’re keeping that friend, because a trans person wouldn’t be able to have a friend who “agrees to disagree” about our humanity.

most of us know who the overtly shitty people are in our community are. and perhaps most importantly, we can see you hanging out with them. a trans life is a life of constant silent snap decisions on who to trust, how much to divulge, how honest to be—and frankly, the realization that someone i thought i could trust keeps company with someone i know i can’t is a very real safety issue. so can we stop pretending that losing friends over “””politics””” (when we’re not, in reality. we’re losing friends that have thrown support behind countless men who seek to scrutinize, dehumanize, and politicize us. my life is not fucking “””politics”””) is childish rather than a radical act of self-preservation and self-providence. your unwillingness to drop contact with a person because of their vitriolic beliefs is solely, 100%, a product of your privilege to not be affected by that person’s hate.

drop your shitty friends. stop killing us.
