If I may add onto this, I am only 21 now, but it means I grew up in the early 2010s and mid 2010s. I think I can count on one hand how many times I heard Trans people get brought up before 2016. It is part of why it took me so long to figure out that I was Transfem myself.

I firmly believe that Trans people are being used as a scapegoat and distraction simply for political convenience because I saw that very political shift through mass media in real time. I genuinely don't think I could remember someone outside of social media giving an extreme negative opinion on Trans people before a certain date.

That is not to say those people didn't exist or that parts of the American population didn't already have an inclination towards seeing things outside the social norm as negative. It is just that more extreme discrimination towards Trans people and by extension the rest of the LGBTQ+ community has been forcibly fermented by certain media outlets within the past decade.
