sometimes i get sad and i think that i’ll never love someone wholly and completely and that if i do they won’t love me the same. and then i think about oranges. i think about all the poems about oranges. all the people who have shared them. i think about how i don’t actually like oranges very much but someone i love does. i think about the fact that i have never told them this because every time they have an orange to eat they wordlessly pass me half and i refuse to tell them that they’re not something i enjoy, so i learn to enjoy. i think about the way they thought of me so quickly, without a pause as they brought the fruit from their bag. i think about how they love oranges and they think i do too so they want me to be happy. i think about how i am happy. i think about how i do love someone and they do love me. i think about how i like oranges now, if not for the fruit, than for the love.
