i'm such a sucker for soft andreil. i'm a sucker for andrew lifting the covers of neil's bed after a nightmare, and neil's groggy "yes". i'm a sucker for them having that inch of space between them with their hands clasped together and their breath mingling and i'm a sucker for the night where andrew can't hold back and that inch disintegrates. i'm a sucker for neil's temper getting the best of him and andrew straddling a bench in the locker room as he wraps up his knuckles and holds an ice pack to them, a sucker for the quiet "idiot" that andrew murmurs as he presses a kiss to each joint. i'm a sucker for neil's hand on the back of andrew's neck, playing with the hairs there so softly whilst him and kevin argue back and forth about plays, a sucker for the way andrew just drowns them both out and focuses on the feeling. feet in laps, hands on ankles, pinkies interlocked. i'm a sucker for the way their heads stop snapping up at the sound of a door opening and the corners of their mouth take the movement instead. a sucker for the way their breath doesn't catch when someone comes up behind them because they have something to look forward towards now. i'm a sucker for the first time andrew laughs around the foxes. i'm a sucker for months and months of healing and a sucker for the foxes starting to see andrew through neil's eyes for the first time and i'm a sucker for, somewhere down the line, the time where neil makes some snarky comment and andrew Truly Laughs in front of them. i'm a sucker for the way dan would bite her lip to hide a smile, matt would let out a small laugh, kevin's brows would raise, aaron's expression would slip, nicky's eyes would tear up and neil's ears would go red and i'm a sucker for the quiet words they'd exchange afterwards. i'm a sucker for the way renee would touch andrew's wrist as him and neil leave the room later that night and i'm a sucker for the way andrew would sit with bee later and say how natural it was. i'm a sucker for trading secrets and tentative touches that over time just become things they know and sure grasps. i'm a sucker for andrew's half smile getting more full and i'm a sucker for the way neil never stops finding new expressions of andrew's to learn and i'm a sucker for the way that they start as jagged edges that fit together and over time they take sandpaper to every one of them until it's more of an embrace than a rough clicking into place and-

every time someone says they don't like andrew's height and imagine him taller, an angel loses its wings. and i also immediately clock them as the coward they are

No listen I will not shut up about the scene where Neil asks why Andrew would want to go through withdrawal for a game he doesn’t even like and Matt responds with “Would you want to be crazy high every day of your life?" because it showcases the fact that, despite their differences and disagreements, Matt understands this part of Andrew.

Matt has experienced addiction and he has gone through withdrawal and relapsed and gone through it again. He spent a year on the girls’ couch because he didn’t know how else to avoid going back to the drugs he’d worked to get off of. Andrew can’t do that: his high is legally mandated, and any attempt to circumvent risks leading him to a worse position. So of course he takes this opportunity to do it in a place where there’s some degree of protection, because the other people around him have a vested interest in keeping it a secret. Of course he wants to come off the drugs any time he can, if only to remember what it feels like to just exist. Matt can understand that.

And this moment where Matt is able to explain Andrew to Neil is so telling in regard to Matt’s relationship with the cousins: they aren’t close, and Matt doesn’t have the ability that Neil has to act as glue between them and the upperclassmen, but he is bridging the gap between the two groups as well as he can, working with the cousins to offer a strong, unified back line. He’s not about to let go of everything they do that’s shitty, and he’s down to fight them if the situation calls for it, but he’s also not dismissing them outright or shutting them out.
