Lust, Love, and the Sweet, Sweet Burn: Writing Romance That Makes Readers Feel
Let’s talk romance—specifically the kind that makes readers scream into pillows, clutch their chests, and whisper “just kiss already” at the page. Whether you're a seasoned romance author or just dipping your toes into the love pool, there's one golden truth to remember: good romance is about *tension*. And tension lives in the delicious space between lust and love.
First Comes Lust…
Lust is that electric charge between characters. It’s the stolen glances, the way one of them notices the other's hands or voice or the way they lean in a little too close when they talk. Lust is immediate. It’s instinctual. And let’s be honest, it’s fun as hell to write.
But if you stop there—if all your characters do is pine and make out and pine some more—you risk making it all surface-level. Lust is the spark, but it’s not the whole fire.
Then Comes Love (Eventually)
Love, real love, is slower. It’s about trust, vulnerability, and seeing the other person fully—flaws, baggage, weird hobbies and all—and still leaning in. It happens in the quiet moments: making tea for someone who's had a bad day, remembering how they take their coffee, watching them geek out about something they care about. That’s where readers fall with your characters.
The magic is in the shift—when your characters go from “I want to kiss you until my brain falls out” to “I’d burn the world down if it meant keeping you safe.” It doesn’t happen all at once. And that’s where the slow burn comes in.
Ah, the Slow Burn: Delicious Torture
Slow burn romance is a masterclass in delayed gratification. It's all about restraint. You’re letting readers live in the tension—the almost-touches, the lingering stares, the confessions that never quite happen. And every time the characters get this close to admitting their feelings or acting on them and then don’t? Readers get more hooked.
But here’s the key: something has to be progressing. Slow burn doesn’t mean nothing happens. It means everything matters.
Every moment builds the foundation. Every emotional beat gets us one step closer to that glorious payoff.
Think of it like cooking over a low flame. You’re letting the flavors deepen. So when the first kiss finally lands? It’s earned. It’s fireworks. It matters.
Tips for Writing a Killer Slow Burn
- Give them obstacles. Emotional baggage, clashing goals, external threats—give your characters legit reasons not to jump into bed right away.
- Let them see each other. Intimacy isn’t just physical. Let your characters learn each other’s fears, dreams, scars.
- Build micro-tension. Hands grazing. One of them patching the other up after a fight. A joke that turns into a confession. Let every small moment do work.
- Make the payoff worth it. When they finally get together—make it satisfying. Let it feel like the culmination of everything they’ve been through.
Don’t Just Make Them Hot—Make Them Real
It’s easy to write about two people who are attracted to each other. What’s harder—and infinitely more rewarding—is writing two people who choose each other. Who grow, change, fight, make up, and fall deeper the whole time.
So go ahead. Light the match. Let them burn slowly. And when your readers are begging for that kiss? That’s how you know you’ve done it right.

Random Stuff for Your Story
I have bookmarks saved for random, different, interesting topics that don’t really fit into any single category, so I decided to just put them all together in one list.

A list of resources on miscellaneous topics to help make your stories more interesting.

In Time Travel Movies, When the Time Traveler Asks... A tumblr thread that discusses more realistic responses for when a time traveler asks what year it is or where they are, instead of people automatically thinking they are weird or crazy for asking.

20 Ways to Show Extreme Fear in Your Writing
As I dive into researching signs of fear for my horror WIP, I wanted to share some of the most compelling and visceral reactions I’ve come across. Whether you’re writing a chilling scene or crafting a character’s panic, these 20 signs of fear can help bring tension and realism to your story.
Physical Reactions
Hyperventilating — sucking in air but never feeling like it’s enough
Chest tightens — feels like a weight or hands pressing down
Limbs shaking violently, knees buckling
Complete loss of muscle control — collapsing or unable to stand
Cold sweat soaking through clothes
Heart hammering so hard they feel it in their throat or head
Tunnel vision — the world narrowing down to one terrifying focal point
Ringing in the ears or sudden deafness, like the world drops away
Dizziness / feeling faint / vision blurring
Dry mouth — unable to speak or even scream
Uncontrollable Behavior
Screaming / sobbing / gasping — involuntary vocal outbursts
Panic run — bolting without thinking, tripping over everything
Clawing at their own skin / chest / throat — like trying to escape their body
Begging / pleading out loud even if no one’s there
Repeating words or phrases — “No, no, no” / “This isn’t happening”
Hiding instinctively — diving under tables, closets, or corners
Desperate grabbing — reaching for someone, anything solid
Loss of bladder or bowel control (for extreme terror)
Total mental shutdown — frozen, slack-jawed, staring blankly
Memory blackout — later can’t recall what happened during the worst moment

100 Dialogue Tags You Can Use Instead of “Said”
For the writers struggling to rid themselves of the classic ‘said’. Some are repeated in different categories since they fit multiple ones (but those are counted once so it adds up to 100 new words).
1. Neutral Tags
Straightforward and unobtrusive dialogue tags:
Added, Replied, Stated, Remarked, Responded, Observed, Acknowledged, Commented, Noted, Voiced, Expressed, Shared, Answered, Mentioned, Declared.
2. Questioning Tags
Curious, interrogative dialogue tags:
Asked, Queried, Wondered, Probed, Inquired, Requested, Pondered, Demanded, Challenged, Interjected, Investigated, Countered, Snapped, Pleaded, Insisted.
3. Emotive Tags
Emotional dialogue tags:
Exclaimed, Shouted, Sobbed, Whispered, Cried, Hissed, Gasped, Laughed, Screamed, Stammered, Wailed, Murmured, Snarled, Choked, Barked.
4. Descriptive Tags
Insightful, tonal dialogue tags:
Muttered, Mumbled, Yelled, Uttered, Roared, Bellowed, Drawled, Spoke, Shrieked, Boomed, Snapped, Groaned, Rasped, Purred, Croaked.
5. Action-Oriented Tags
Movement-based dialogue tags:
Announced, Admitted, Interrupted, Joked, Suggested, Offered, Explained, Repeated, Advised, Warned, Agreed, Confirmed, Ordered, Reassured, Stated.
6. Conflict Tags
Argumentative, defiant dialogue tags:
Argued, Snapped, Retorted, Rebuked, Disputed, Objected, Contested, Barked, Protested, Countered, Growled, Scoffed, Sneered, Challenged, Huffed.
7. Agreement Tags
Understanding, compliant dialogue tags:
Agreed, Assented, Nodded, Confirmed, Replied, Conceded, Acknowledged, Accepted, Affirmed, Yielded, Supported, Echoed, Consented, Promised, Concurred.
8. Disagreement Tags
Resistant, defiant dialogue tags:
Denied, Disagreed, Refused, Argued, Contradicted, Insisted, Protested, Objected, Rejected, Declined, Countered, Challenged, Snubbed, Dismissed, Rebuked.
9. Confused Tags
Hesitant, uncertain dialogue tags:
Stammered, Hesitated, Fumbled, Babbled, Mumbled, Faltered, Stumbled, Wondered, Pondered, Stuttered, Blurted, Doubted, Confessed, Vacillated.
10. Surprise Tags
Shock-inducing dialogue tags:
Gasped, Stunned, Exclaimed, Blurted, Wondered, Staggered, Marvelled, Breathed, Recoiled, Jumped, Yelped, Shrieked, Stammered.
Note: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. No I am NOT telling people to abandon said and use these. Yes I understand that said is often good enough, but sometimes you WANT to draw attention to how the character is speaking. If you think adding an action/movement to your dialogue is 'good enough' hate to break it to you but that ruins immersion much more than a casual 'mumbled'. And for the last time: this is just a resource list, CALM DOWN. Hope that covers all the annoyingly redundant replies :)

~Yearning~
Let’s submerge together into the water,
Let’s dance under the stars,
Let’s run into the field,
Let’s do everything together.
Allow those thoughts escape from my imagination and become reality.
My eyes scream my love for you,
My soul yearns for yours.
Let me be your everything,
Your breath, your light, your heartbeat.
I can’t breathe and I am okay with that,
I wish I could give more.
Let me worship you, let me adore you.
You, the otherworldly being and I, the devout believer and follower.
Your name always on my lips, every material possession dedicated to you.
Me kneeling in front of you, worshiping you and asking to be in your presence.
Allow me to hold you, to breathe your scent, to taste your lips.
Give me the privilege to feel you flesh against mine, to embrace you wholeheartedly, to become one.
Allow me to cradle your face and stare deep into your soul.
Show me your true self, your flaws, your quirks. Let me see you in your best and worst, give me the chance to love every little thing that makes you.
Let’s be each other’s eternal companion,
Let’s support each other,
Let’s love each other.
Let’s become one.
Let’s intertwine our souls.

“A search for love”
I read for what I don’t know
I long for what I haven’t been able to feel,
A love,
A love intense and consuming but oh so beautiful,
To feel complete and full,
To find my person in this chaos,
To find my solace and home,
Not a love that causes Deos,
But a love that is a sigh of relief when approached,
My lover to embrace me and hold me tight,
To whisper me love and warmth,
A love that even the moon, that is every night embraced by the sun, would envy.

Screams echo through the night
The moonlight is bathing the white marble as she laid on it
Bloody tears streaming from her eyes
Her nails digging her flesh, tearing apart the skin of her face
Her dress slipping off, her chest out for the moon to take a peak
Her spine curved and her hair touching the soil
Screams echo through the night
Her breath becomes shallow and blood drips from her wounds
Her arms limp now, hanging off the marble
The angel of death approached, dark hooded to set her free
Dead silence through the night
As she floats away, free and weightless

Bloody Love
Is this divine punishment? Is this God's wrath? Is this agony my sentence ? My own divine damnation? A personal hell made just for this sinner?
Minutes go by waiting for you my love, minutes waiting for you to open your eyes and begin your new life.
Did we fail? Has cruel Death claimed you already? Is this the universe telling me that I shouldn't had attempted to make you like me ?
A monster, a demon, that needs to feed off of blood, the essence of life, to survive. Immortality will be too long without you my love.
How can I continue living without being able to brush my hands into your hair, taking in your scent. How can I continue living without the sound of your laugh.
How can I look again at the pale moon with being reminded of your skin, the curve of your neck, the one that you gladly offered to me, as proof of your affections towards me.
How can I look at the flowers and not seeing the image of you, holding them, with flushed cheeks and a big smile.
How can I look at the darkness of the deep sea and not being reminded of your entrancing dark eyes, pulling anyone who looks at them into their abyss.
The memories of you would be too unbearable. The end of time would be too far away. My will for life would wither with you. My motivation to keep going to see another starry sky would evaporate because how can I enjoy the stars now?
So please take me out of this misery my dear, open your eyes and join me in eternity. If not, I shall run towards Death's embrace to join you.

Unsent Love Letters - Damian
Jon,
I feel shame writing this letter. I am making physical proof of my dishonour towards our friendship, but I can’t hold it any longer. My affections and feelings towards you run so deep that it is impossible to contain them any longer.
Forgive me. You are one of the best things that has happened in my life. I life full of pain, death and sorrow. But you Jon, you gave me hope. Hope of a better future, something that a sinner like myself doesn’t deserve.
In a life full of darkness, surrounded the night, you Jon, are like a midnight sun, like a full moon shining so brightly, illuminating everything. I can’t help but bask into your light and feel your warmth.
I don’t deserve you Jon. I don’t deserve even being around you but I am selfish. I want to be around you.
I want to hear you talk about your day, your college friends, your family, your thoughts, your dreams. I want to hear your stupid jokes, you rambling about your curriculum and that classes you find hard. I am willing to hear about the people that catch your eye, that you take fancy.
And later…
Later when I am alone with my thoughts I will imagine that beautiful blush, those soft eyes, your lovesick gaze, all of those are directed towards me. Just for a few moments, I allow myself to be deluded. I forgo all my mental training, I throw away the cold hard realism that was ingrain in me and allow myself to be consumed with the idea that in some universe you might actually reciprocate.
I imagine us embracing each other, your face mere centimetres away from mine. Eyes locked, unable to look away even for a moment. Your face beautifully flushed. Our lips inching closer and closer until I can taste you.
Oh Jon!
To be kissed by you! The mere thought make me transcend to realms higher than the ones known to man. Our lips coming together in an act of total love and adoration and our bodies becoming one.
Oh to be loved by you Jon!
My biggest desire and my greatest shame. I don’t deserve you Jon, my beloved. I don’t wish to sully your light with my darkness. My beautiful light, how could I do that to you? I belong with the darkness and together with my love for you, I shall guard you and your happiness from the shadows. I will keep the ugliness with me, so that you can only experience the beauty of this world.
I love you, Jon.
So my beloved, if you ever find out, I hope you can indulge my selfish desire and let me stay by your side. To not push me away like I deserve.
Forgive me Jon, for desiring you, for wanting you in ways I shouldn’t. But until that bridge is crossed I shall stand next to you like a guardian, like a companion, like a friend and whatever else you need me to be.
Stay radiant my love, as I am here at your disposal until my last breath. I am willing to abandon my father’s teachings for you. To dirty my hands with blood once again, for you. Only for you Jon.
So let me stay next to you until you don’t need me any more.
With all my love,
Damian.

Poor Jane
trigger warning contains themes of bullying and suicide.
Dear diary,
I was there.
I saw everything that happened but I didn’t speak up.
If I did those terrible bullies would had targeted me too.
Poor Jane! She took all the blame unjustly. Those terrible bullies targeted her specifically for a long time. They called her names, they pushed her around, they stole her stuff and now pinned their crimes on her.
Poor Jane! She will forever be branded as a grave thief. But it wasn’t her. I saw everything. I saw those terrible bullies digging that wealthy woman’s grave.
Everyone knew about her wish to be buried with her wedding jewels. The funeral was open casket too! Everyone saw her body be adorned with those magnificent jewelleries. She loved her late husband, so she to have a live of him in her grave, as she said.
So those terrible bullies, not even a week after she got buried, took the shovels and started digging under the moonlight.
They took the jewels and left the grave open, disturbed, for the people to find it in the morning.
The police tried their best to find the culprit.
I saw those terrible bullies plant some of the jewels inside poor Jane’s bag. A few hours later the police came. They came with a warrant and searched everyone’s bags.
Poor Jane! You see dear diary, she was actually poor. She was being raised by a single parent that barely made ends meet. Everyone knew. It was a small town after all.
Poor Jane pleaded that she didn’t do it but no one listened. No, no one wanted to listen. They wanted this case that disturbed the peaceful town to close.
Poor Jane was taken to the station but was eventually released due to her strong alibi. She wasn’t in town that night and she had no friends to conspire with all thanks to those terrible bullies.
Poor Jane pleaded that she didn't do it but no one listened. No, no one wanted to listen. They wanted this case that disturbed this peaceful town to close.
Poor Jane was taken to the station but was eventually released due to strong alibi. She wasn't in town that night and had no friends to conspire with either, all thanks to those terrible bullies.
It didn't matter. She was branded now forever to live with the shame of a crime she didn't commit. The bullying became even worse but this time not just by those terrible bullies, but from anyone. Everyone would gather their stuff away from her the moment they saw her, no one would talk to her. The teachers did nothing.
Poor Jane! She couldn't take it anymore. She jumped from the rooftop of the school. Her body made a loud thudding sound when it hit the ground. Her death casted a new shadow in this peaceful town.
I know Jane will forgive me for not defending her. She has to. I know the actual crime she committed.
People don't really notice me dear diary, as I am always one with the shadows. Hidden in the corners watching everything and everyone.
I saw everything dear diary.
I saw Jane and the now deceased rich lady argue. I couldn't make what the subject was but nevertheless i saw.
I saw the conversation get more and more heated as minutes went by.
I saw Jane push the poor lady out of anger. I saw the poor lady trip and fall into the river.
I saw the currents take her away and drown her.
I saw her die because of Jane.
I saw Jane's face get distorted as the events transpired.
I saw the look on Jane's face when she saw me, when she realised i witnessed everything.
Jane begged me not to say anything.
I agreed, not because i pitied her, but because I didn't want to deal with the headache that would happen after i confessed. I gave Jane my word. Nothing regarding her affairs would be heard from my mouth.
I saw Jane's face to change from horror and anxiety to relief. But there was something else in her eyes, concealed, almost unnoticeable.
A chill went through my body and I held down my smirk. That moment I realised who little Jane truly was in her core.
So my dear diary, Jane has to forgive me because she was no saint either. A far cry from it I would say.
Poor Jane payed in a way for her crime and it is now up to the Almighty to judge whether it was enough or not.
But let me spoil it to you. It wasn't, I saw it in her eyes.
You my dear know to much now.
Unfortunately, you have to follow poor Jane now and be rid off.
Sent her my regards and tell her to save me a spot in hell.
