I thought writing a prequel after the first book would be an easy project.
I was so, so wrong.
Where the story wants to go and where it needs to go are two different places and it’s annoying AF.

HAPPY PRIDE from the bisexual MCs of ROOTS IN INK.
Liam and Emma’s romance is the focus of the book, but Sara and Bethany’s is vital to the story.
Sara and Bethany are getting their own standalone novella with an anticipated winter 2026 release.

I added a “formatting specs” page to my paperback proofs so I can easily see what I started from if I want to make changes.
There’s a 70% chance I accidentally leave this in the final file and discover it after I print 25 copies.

You might be shocked to hear that you actually have to write the book if you want to publish the book.
Today I finished drafting Bound by Ink, a sapphic fantasy romance prequel to my novel Roots in Ink. It felt like it took centuries to write 25,400 words but it was just 2 months.
I thought it would be a breeze considering I already wrote the material the book is based on.
It was hard.
Staying within the confines of an existing book is so much harder than I expected.
I’m glad it’s done. I’m ready for revisions.

[Roots in Ink | Contemporary Fantasy Romance]
Liam Doran: Depressed Dog Dad
Over on threads a new author was setting her career on fire berating pet owners for loving their pets too much.
I made this graphic because I’m petty, but I realized afterward that it’s also great depiction of my MMC’s history with depression.
“Liam wasn't ready to open up with the whole truth, however, and he gave Emma a sugarcoated version of the story. He didn’t mention that picking up lunch was the first time he’d left his house in weeks. ... He didn't tell her that he barely took care of himself, and it was his magic that kept his neglected houseplants alive. He didn't tell her that Belle forced him outside every day for a walk no matter the weather. He definitely left out that Belle probably saved his life.”

The Alamo Drafthouse Thunderbolts preshow had a whole ass segment on Sebastian Stan’s acting career and there was NOT ONE mention of Jefferson from Once Upon a Time.

The thing about being a writer is that we see stories everywhere. There’s so much potential in just existing.
Case in point:
A friend of mine and fellow author passed out in my yoga class. She’s fine. We discussed her health history and knew this was a possibility. But when my boss mentioned seeing someone with “the red bag” it lead to a hilarious conversation about coming back to haunt the building just retaking the yoga class she never finished.
My friend and I already had plans to write after class and we spent a good 30 minutes outlining an enemies to lovers paranormal romance in which a yoga student and gym bro find love in the afterlife.
And now I have another WIP to add to my list.

I’m existing in this really weird headspace where I’m reading news about how our fascist government is kidnapping and detaining people for excersizing their constitutionally protected right to protest while listening to my 8yo tell me about pumpkin bagel sandwiches on Animal Crossing and reminding him to eat his breakfast.
And amidst all that I’m writing books and trying to convince people to read them. 🫠

How do you know if ROOTS IN INK is right for you?
Do you think our impending dystopia would be better with magic?
Do you think you and your pet are bonded by a deity?
Are you a neurodivergent bisexual?
Do you like snooping through other people’s journals?
Do you like banter?
Are you obsessed with plants?
Are you convinced your BFF is your soulmate?
Are you a sucker for a found family trope?
Are you cool with middle-aged people fxxxking?
If you answered yes to a statistically insignificant number of these questions then you might enjoy this novel.
