I remember when this was a big thing on writeblr, but it seems to have died down a lot so

“We’re almost there, Brynny,” Rhys managed, shifting his tiny half-sister to his other arm as she wrapped her wings around him. “Almost there, I promise.” He wasn't sure what ‘almost’ meant exactly, but it was vague enough to be true…he hoped. He wasn't sure how much longer he could carry Brynn through this apocalyptic place.

“Miss my Daddy.” A muffled sob made its way through Rhys’ shirt, and he winced.

“I know, baby. I know.” He bit his lip, hoping their father was still okay—praying to the Ghosts he had gotten out of the Temple alive. If he hadn't…

Rhys shivered. No, he didn't need to think about that. He had enough to deal with already between Brynn and his new mission.

He paused to glance around the Blanklands for a moment. Nothing had really changed significantly since they'd gotten out of the city; there were only crumbling, overgrown buildings as far as Rhys could see. How anyone, immortal or not, could live here was a mystery to him.

But some did, and Rhys had to find a very specific Blanklander before the Ghosts gave up on him…

“Not thinking about that,” he muttered to himself, adjusting his hold on Brynn and trudging on into the Blanklands. “We’re not going to think about that.”

He wasn’t really sure who he was talking to; was it himself? Or was it the Ghosts who had made their home in him—who had already made him the next Ghostspeaker?

He didn’t know at this point—and the way life was going right now, he guessed he never would.
