Writing Challange

For?: Anyone, but really I think it would be a pretty interesting study to have “anti-shippers” of the couples in question, to write these scenes.

Prompt: Re-write cannon scenes of popular “completely straight” gay ships that “fans created” and writers/showrunners/actors never encouraged or used as “queerbate”, as heterosexual relationships using the exact same actions and words and emotions as the original scenes.

Why?: I think it would be interesting to see just how many people would still see that particular couple the same way and how many would discover they actually do just have an aversion to gay ships.

I think that alot of people see the word “queerbaiting” and dont fully understand it. They take it like “oh they’re angry coz they didnt get their way, and they just want to make everything gay” … that is so completely not what it is.

Its understandable in a sense that the term queerbaiting isnt fully understood by all because theres no such thing as “straight-baiting” in television and movies. Its the actual complete opposite … when its a male/female relationship, its called a “slow-burn”, inferring that it will eventually become something. Its called “taking advantage of the actors chemistry” and while it is talked about and hinted at as a “will they/ wont they” its never actually in question because the majority of the time, chemistry reads are done between these actors for the specific reason of knowing “will this sell?” But when it comes to queerships, once upon a time they happened by accident. Actors were brought in with a different storyline and then something showed up on screen that wasnt intended and through that they discovered that there was this entire massive subset of fans who were not being acknowledged in life or on television … so they did exactly what they did with their straight relationships. They took advantage. They teased and hinted and wrote things that had they been a “usual” couple, would eventually lead to “endgame”. They encouraged the will they wont they of it all. Took advantage of that chemistry. The only difference? They never intended to give their fanbase that eventual outcome. They straddled the line of keep them invested but never encourage. And now? Now it seems that its become a requirement for shows, to have that one relationship that is strictly-straight friends, “which is so much more special then romantic love sometimes”… but they will still play off of it and benefit from merchandise and views and hashtags and everything that brings in a dollar from fans who are only looking for exactly what they’re calling it … “every kind of love” …. Why cant two women have a healthy faithful relationship? Why cant two men who are best friends, ALSO fall in love with each other? Why cant a character who has only ever identified as “straight” grow and realize that they’re bi or pan or gay? And why cant two people be both best friends and queer but also find love with other people? Why cant a queer man and a straight man have a healthy loving friendship that doesn’t have to end horribly? A big part of it is because of those words! Words that for so long have been used as homophobic slurs and still today in Twenty-freaking-twenty-four are used with hate instead of what they actually ARE which is how people identify how they LOVE . Words that the LGBTQIA+ community have taken back and fight every day to redefine with love and Pride and positivity, but that the “ entertainment industry” still shy away from due to a history of hate-filled, un-informed homophobia. An instilled fear that if they step over that line, then it will all fall apart. That the villagers will come with their torches and pitchforks and storm the castle so to speak. So they stay just this side of “not too far” and spout the company line. “I think its really important that we show every kind of love” but never actually doing that. Because the other company line is “who else can we exploit for a dollar?”. And its not new. The entertainment industry has always used queer people to their advantage. Once upon a time it was for the “hilarity” of a man or woman dressing in drag to get away with some scheme. Or it was about gay bashing and feeding into hate and fear by showcasing what a horrible insult it is to be called gay or how dangerous it is to be out. How sexy it is for two women to be together - but only to turn on the straight male lead. Now its become something along the lines of a joke again, but now the joke is “we know what we’re doing and we’re going to keep doing it because we’re profiting off of it, off of you.”

Queerbaiting isnt us seeing something unintentional or not there. Queerbaiting is this: if the same scene can be rewritten the same way but as female/male, and you can suddenly see it as romantic, its because the relationship is queer coded, to pull in specific fans.

Scripts are not just dialog on a page. While actors are sometimes given leeway, they are given a script telling them how to portray the words on the page. How to move, speak, emote. A director films this, re-sets films again multiple times until what is written comes across on camera the way it was meant to. This is all then edited even further to make things even more impactful and entertaining. It is then viewed and approved and only then shown to these “delusional fans.” This is all done knowing what reaction they will get from it. There are people who actually have the job of encouraging these ships. Of finding more ways to profit off of something that somebody else is in charge of disproving to fans by calling it unintentional. It is an industry, a business, nothing is unintentional. That is queerbaiting.

Challenge: Just change one thing. One characters gender, thats all.

Tried watching 9-1-1 from the beginning with my Mom and unlike me (who believes the show started with Season 2) she really enjoyed Season 1. She thoroughly disliked Abby though lol Everytime there was a Buck/Abby scene she would shout at the TV “Ewe get away from him you nasty! Hes too young for you!” As we started Season 2 and we all met Eddie her conversation with the TV turned to “Oooh Hellooo, hes handsome’ (because apparently age no longer mattered lol) and then “Whys he being so mean to him? Be nice!” Then after a few looks™️ and Bucks blushing “or you could have mine” she turned the conversation to me instead of the TV …

Mom: Wait, are they gay?

Me: What? Why do you think that?

Mom: They are! Ok go to the next one.

Me: Wait but why do you think they’re gay?

Mom: I dont know because they’re flirting and making eyes and hes blushing! Does that mean the nasty old lady doesnt come back?

Me: (still trying to not let my feelings on the matter show coz i want her to form her own opinion lol) oh my god why are you being mean to Abby? She needed to find herself.

Mom: (rolls her eyes) just go to the next one.

Point of this story? My Mom was more invested in Buddie in three episodes then she EVER was in Buck&Abby over an entire season and done with the denial shit from the jump so she did what every shipper in history threatens to do but never follows through on when we dont get our ship together “im done, im not watching anymore” lol

i just …. i couldnt understand the red, yellow and orange heart then i started looking back at past buddie scenes and i fucking wanted to cry!!!! am i the only person who never FULLY grasped how often some shade of the colors red and yellow are used in buddie scenes?! like i noticed it but i never …. NOTICED it! and it gets more intense and obvious as the seasons go on …. clothes, background lighting, set props - balloons …. since like … day one … if they slowly start transitioning to orange guys …. im gonna die …. like full stop, stop breathing because ….. we’ve all been burned too many times by shows …. and it scared me to get my hopes up …

how sad is that? its 2022 and people are still afraid to show two MALE main characters as more then just “special friends” …. how 1950’s is that phrase? they try to make it sound “modern and inclusive” by saying that they’re trying to show how families come in all forms - which is true! accept that that includes gay men as well! I remember reading an interview that … i think it was rafael silva … im not sure … i dont watch lonestar so it was an article i read by accident …. it might have been ronen rubinstien (correct me if i spelled that wrong - also let me know if you know who the it was((it was rafael silva!! thank you @idealuk !!)) ) … anyway in the interview he was talking about how before filming he watched 911 and saw buck and eddie and thought they were a couple and he was surprised because he thought to himself - oh they already have a gay couple in this series - i wonder why they want another one? …. i think that says SO MUCH about the television industry …. for it to be surprising to an actor for there to be more then one gay couple on a show - or series - whatever …. is just …. horribly sad to me.

and the movie industry is SO much worse …. how often do we see male gay couple in movies as more then just background characters who are mostly used as comic relief? or shown in unrealistic forms? usually in pastel colors living in suburbia, all smiles and “perfect relationship”, overly flamboyant or them trying to depict the stereotypical male/female roles. that or they’re used for shock value - look how outrageous and overly sexual they are … or to show how great the straight are - where they randomly drop the fact that they have a boyfriend or husband - for the straight main character to either pause in awkward surprise for a moment to then smile and be “cool with it” or to automatically go along with it without pause - still showing how “cool with it” they are …

im getting off tack lol … in television its a bit more common to see two main character women in a relationship - a BIT …. and thats because two women is considered sexy to even the most homophobic of men - whereas two men - when done on tv, is considered “edgy” or so great for showing “different” kinds of love, or for really pushing the boundaries …. but even then its still rare for television shows to show two men in a REAL relationship … where its beautiful and ugly, fights and making up and just … being in real love with one another. and i think that 911 has a real problem with writing same sex couples…. the original 911 obviously - not Lonestar which i think is an entirely different set of writers - correct me if im wrong there…. i think that the Hen/Karen relationship is beautifully done - when its done. its REAL … its beautiful and ugly … trust and fear and betrayal and forgiveness … its real. but again that is - when its done. compared to the other relationships on the show …. how often do we actually see Hen and Karens relationship for more then a few minutes? or as more then just a coming home scene after a hard day? …. only when its special, Hen heavy episodes. but the other couples …. they’re in EVERY episode …. excluding the last season without Chim and Maddie…. even Buck and Taylor received more of a storyline and screentime the the day one Hen and Karen …. but this thing with Buck and Eddie …. a relationship that has been “all in” intensity since episode one … and has ALL of the things that Hen and Karen do - thats a “different kind of family” a “special kind of friendship” … and i keep thinking … where have i heard those buzzwords before? oh right… supernatural.

supernatural broke so many peoples hearts … because they straight up USED their fans. not the actors - the actors have went out of their way to show just how much they were on the same side as the fans … but the showrunners … the producers and writers and the NETWORK all capitalized off of destiel, used their fans to keep the money coming in and then when it was over - when they had their last chance to do something that nobody has had the guts to do - show two previously before seen straight male best friends admit to having fallen in love with one another … they pretty much spit and then laughed in their fans face … and then called it real - that sometimes that happens - one person feels something the other cant …. despite having shown for ten years that the complete opposite was true … i watched supernatural from the very first episode to the very last - hoping for some kind of redemption for a show i LOVED up to the very last moment . but now i cant even bare to see gifs of it because it hurts … and i know im not alone in that.

i think that if 911 goes down that route …. if they keep building up to something that they know they arent going to follow through on … if they throw these two men into yet another straight “normal” relationship - because thats the opposite of “different” right? “normal” ? ugh … now i want to vomit for another reason completely …. stupid supernatural and cw … if they do throw them into new straight relationships … i think that will be it for ALOT of fans … not all … because there are fans who arent there for buddie and there are fans who will stick it out until the very last moment, hoping …. but there will be a considerable amount of fans who will feel betrayed and used again …

in regards to the color of the heart … idont know if it actually means something or if its all in my head but either way …. i do believe that families come in all forms and so do friendships and love … but i dont believe that the buck/eddie relationship is one of them … i dont know … ok … end of rant. ❤️💛🧡

The theme across interviews has been … “well in my head” and how she just sees it like “it got talked about offscreen” “i don’t see a reason for it to ever come up again” …. uh maybe because its A PART OF THE STORY?!

because thats what your SUPPOSED to be creating here lady! A story!

She seems legitimately pissed off that fans “see things that aren’t there” and are “interpreting it differently then what we’re meaning for them to” …. but at the same time not wanting to write a full story!

CLEARLY, you have all of these things in YOUR head that aren’t there. LITERALLY … And basically asking viewers to just write the rest of the story for themselves - BUT only the way you’ve written it in you’re head.

Don’t be pissy because fans of the show flesh out you’re story better then you!

She literally admitted that they shoved Taylor into the story where she didn’t belong - because Megan West was available to fill in when other actors fell through. No wonder her story felt so stiff and sudden and just uncomfortable at times …. it wasn’t supposed to be there! It felt forced because it was being forced! And while I’m not a fan of the character - there are people who are - so i wont attack her because this isn’t just about Buddie fans anymore - its about 911 fans! Megan West has taken so much negative critique over the fact that her character didn’t belong and how it didn’t make sense for to be apart of the particular story happening at the time …. And ill admit, the way she reacted bothered me … but…. How much can somebody actually take before they snap? I still don’t agree or like some of it but I do feel a little more sympathy for her …. It wasn’t her fault. She was doing her job … the writers not doing theirs is out of her control.

Then to say that there was more they had ALWAYS (not well she was available when nobody else was) wanted to do with the Taylor character …. To now reduce her to a catalyst for Bucks to ask himself if he’s SETTLING and to further reduce her to “she was there” …. Its so fucked up … and now they’re doing it again with the new character of Lucy … instead of making her her own character that we could become another Ravi or Albert … somebody who sticks around longterm – not “maybe till the end of the season” …. Another strong female firefighter … (nope cant have TWO longterm) shes going to be another Taylor, Lena, Ana or Shannon …. A Woman who they bring in to “shake things up” ( mind you this means in some-kind of sexual way for all but Lena) do something to advance Buck or Eddies character in some way … in this case for Buck to cheat on his girlfriend, lead her on, then realize HE is settling for HER… where he will then have his Eureka moment of oh we need to breakup … sorry your homeless now? And then move on to Lucy who he feels a spark with that he hasn’t felt in awhile ….

But Lucy is only going to be around until “around the end of the season” so that means she will just be there to give Buck what he needs to either feel better about himself or realizing he needs to work on himself (like Ana did for Eddie) and then poof, bye bye Lucy.

I keep seeing all of these posts about parallels between Bucks season 3 arc and Eddies season 5 arc but … I just don’t think that they’re putting that much thought into the story development anymore!

She literally said - “hopefully people will just forget about the wonkiness of the first half of the season” …. Lady, the “wonkiness” that you’re talking about was how out of character everyone was, how PAST STORYLINES AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT GOT FORGOTTEN - how the hell are you going to blame scheduling for the fact that you just threw out not only 4 1/2 seasons of Bucks character development by having him cheat on his girlfriend and then proceeding to not only not tell her but then go even further by asking her to move in with him - making her believe that he is in love with her and wants a future with her …. when literally only just - jesus - 10 -TEN! episodes ago he was sitting in front of Eddie telling him how he had been in Anas shoes - in love with somebody and knowing they weren’t all in and how much it hurts …. how staying with somebody - because your kid loves them (or because its the most functional relationship you’ve ever had or because she was … oh my god …. pre-sad and you didn’t want to hurt her ) isn’t enough. Meaning that this woman already put it out there into the world that that isn’t something Buck believes in …. I guess in her head he changed his mind offscreen …. or you know was just hoping that would be one of the wonky things we’d all forget about.

And part of the excuse for the first half of the season was scheduling right? So the response to that is add MORE characters … then to say .. well we have soooo many great actors and sooo many more that want to work with them … we don’t really have time for everyone to get screen-time. Ok … so … maybe … MAYBE – focus your attention on the characters who made the show? (who made your job) Whose stories pulled viewers back every week … who made fans fall in love with them and NOT on how many new characters you can create or big names you can pull. Stop writing 35 small storylines nobody has enough time or information to care about and focus on a few fleshed out INTERESTING ones that viewers will want to come back for …. Write a STORY – GROW your CURRENT characters don’t create throw away ones … go back and find the plot of what made not only this tvshow but the one that it got left in your hands for!

How was this woman put in charge of a show? I understand the whole time and two shows and everything … I get it – I understand it …. I do not understand the choice of her. Every-time this woman opens her mouth in an interview she insults SOMEBODY … I could actually feel the eye-roll when she was asked about who will be supporting Eddie through his breakdown … like ok we all get it lady you aren’t a fan of Buck and Eddie ever being together – trust us we ALL get it … calm down …. Nobody is personally attacking you by thinking “hey those two dudes would be good together. “ I don’t understand where her hostility is coming from. Even her answer about Tim Minear sounded aggressive to me …. Like … like she was upset somebody was pointing out (probably not intentionally) that she wasn’t 100% in charge. That she didn’t have final say …. And then to be like “and we don’t want Tim to die” …. Like … wow … I just …. Im both at a loss for words and have way too many … I mean I think this is … the longest thing I have ever written on here. I don’t normally … which is probably I have no clue how to fix the spacing on here … I am so sorry to anyone (if anyone) reading my rant. 1600+ words and still there is SOMETHING i know im forgetting … ugh its going to bug me … anyway…

Its just … it is very obvious that this woman is not a Drama writer …. She DOES NOT seem to be enjoying anything about it OTHER than – yeah I’m in charge now (mostly) so I can fuck with these characters however I want and say whatever I want … nobody can stop me …. It all feels very power-trippy to me …. Like … she got away with the lazy writing and story development (LACK OF!!!) in 5a and now she just thinks she can do whatever she wants with (TO!!!!!) the show because viewers LOVE these characters and actors! so much that …. We’ll just keep coming back. … the actors man … we all know how much they all love working on the show …. They make it so obvious when they don’t agree with, or understand their characters actions … and … if an actor doesn’t understand their character – ESPECIALLY one they have spent FOUR YEARS developing and becoming IT SHOWS! And if an actor becomes so frustrated with the lack of continuity in their character (this isn’t improve it’s a Drama television show!) they will eventually have to walk away … its their career …. No matter how much they love the show or character or fans ….

Anyway …. Like I said this woman whose name I cant even write because she makes me so angry … should not be in charge of this show … or even writing for it. She wants small short stories … to not have to remember thing like past storylines or plot or character development …. She does t even want to write for the same characters consistently but to have new character all the time – because that doesn’t need to be thought out …. Oh my god …. This woman needs to be writing for The Simpsons …

the fact that in the article she basically admitted that they’re aware that viewers/fans are going to interpret buck/eddie scenes differently to what they’re meaning to put out there …. yet they still write it exactly the same way ….. shows that if they are in fact never going there - they’re using the ship to keep viewers coming back.

there were so many things wrong with that interview …. things that just didnt make sense. things that were just straight up insulting to viewers.

for instance how to them - in their heads …. eddie spoke to Christopher about the custody/will before he did it ….. but he never told buck? for an entire year? then to act like it wasnt really a big deal because it was just being pulled from real life and people do that …. the only reason they would make it so that eddie did this big thing - but didnt tell buck about it was specifically for the big reveal and the reaction it would get specifically from buddie shippers ….

then to say “i dont want to say they’re watching the show wrong …. but” thats so insulting to viewers and SUCH a copout …. we arent watching anything wrong - we’re watching what they’re writing and directing and editing together in a very specific way.

the entire interview screamed - ok we know we’ve written ourselves into a corner and viewers are starting to realize that we’ve been using them - so we’re just going to deny deny deny and tell them its on them for seeing something that isn’t there.

omg so ... what if the big secret is that their Mom is bipolar, and thats why Maddie and their Dad react the way they do about Buck and therapy? Theory based purely off picture vibes and the fact that the season seems to be heavily based around mental health. Also thinking back over the seasons, he does exhibit a lot of the signs ... maybe he’s always exhibited manic episodes - like depression, extreme guilt, hyper sensitivity, also hyper sexuality, high risk taking, rapid speech, extreme energy, hyper fixation… the way he bounced from one thing to the next to the next … . maybe they keep it a secret from him because they’re in some kind of denial? And force maddie to keep it from him too? And that’s why Maddie basically raised him? Because their Mom would go through manic episodes and their Dad was always more focused on her? And that’s where Buck gets the idea that they were always somewhere else and “liked each other more then they liked them” ….. idk … just something about the way Maddie kind of … stood up straighter? And then had to kind of make herself seem more relaxed when he told them? like she was preparing herself? And then came to him to see if there was something he wanted to tell her that he didn’t want to mention in front of Chimney? It just all … is flowing that way for me right now …. I know there are A LOT of soap opera theories out there right now …. But maybe its something more serious in the sense that their denial left him not ever understanding why he felt the way he did or did some of the things he did - like stealing a fire truck to have sex TWICE…. Even after knowing he would lose his job….he called it sex addiction, meaning he knew something was wrong and he was trying to figure it out, and then later he called it a phase, like an episode…. Idk maybe its me hyper fixating … but it just is MY theory …. Idk lol

Eddie gets stuck in the well trying to save the kid, something collapses and he thinks he might not make it. He flashes back to the last time his job put him in danger of dying and leaving Christopher, but this time Christopher doesnt have Shannon so he asks Buck to make sure he takes care of him. Buck cries and agrees but says it wont come to that. They save him and the kid both and everything is happy but intense and they hug and Buck realizes he's in love with him.
