Lorde’s latest collaboration…with MAC!
Tumblr media
After winning two Grammys and a Brit award, it has just been announced that Lorde will be collaborating with MAC Cosmetics on a limited-edition makeup collection due to be released this winter.
Famous for her signature vampy lip, we can’t wait to see what other gothic-chicproducts will be coming our way.
Here’s what Lorde had to say about the exciting news:
“I have loved MAC Cosmetics since I was a little kid. I remember saving up to buy my very first MAC lipstick [Snob] at 14, and it was used by about 20 of my friends! MAC has a very clear aesthetic, that has always felt fashion forward to me. So I was really excited to work with them on these products, which I use pretty much every day and night. I hope you will too.”
The highly anticipated collection will be available throughout New Zealand and online at MACcosmetics.com .
Are you ready for the kiwi superstar’s collab?

Lana Del Rey is 'Once Upon A Dream'
Tumblr media
Lana Del Rey’s version of ‘Once Upon A Dream’ is of course (In usual Lana Fashion) extremely haunting. The enchanting singer has put a spine chilling twist on the theme for Disney’s Maleficent. Her eerie cover compliments the dark take on Sleeping Beauty and sets the ominous tone for the movie well. The rest of the soundtrack is bound to be amazing, hopefully we'll be hearing Lana’s ethereal voice on more than just one track.
She has released no new music after singing ‘Young an Beautiful’ for The Great Gatsby soundtrack, so we are extremely excited for her return!
Tumblr media
Angelina Jolie will play the title character ‘Maleficent’ alongside Elle Fanning who was cast as Princess Aurora. We will also be seeing Australian Actor; Brenton Thwaites big screen Debut as Prince Phillip.
What do you think about Lana’s cover, are you excited for the movie?
‘Maleficent’ will hit theatres on May 30, 2014.

Get the Look: Lorde
Lorde’s flawless skin and deep purple lip made for an edgy yet relaxed appearance.
Her trusted makeup artist Amber Dreadon (MAC Cosmetics Senior Artist) stated that they wanted “to keep the look fresh and radiant. Modern, a bit boyish and darkly cool with a lip focus.”
Mac Cosmetic’s Prep + Prime Natural Radiance Pink, Strobe Liquid andMineralize Moisture Foundation was used to create Lorde’s almost translucent skin.
Next, Amber used a Pearl cream colour base paired with Blacktrack Fluidline and Groundwork Pro Longwear Paint Pot to line the eyes. To achieve Lorde’s vampy lip, Amber used Heroine Lipstick mixed with Cyber Lipstick and added Vino Lip Pencil to give definition.

2014 Grammy Awards Overview
Tumblr media
The 2014 Grammy Awards and featured performances were simply unparalleled… Beyonce and Jay Z got the night started with their hit song‘Drunk in Love’, Lorde amazed us with a wicked performance of ‘Royals’ and Taylor Swift stunned all with her single ‘All too Well’.
Tumblr media
John Legend’s intimate performance of ‘All Of Me’ was another crowd favourite; his soulful vocals and powerful lyrics managed to captivate the whole arena.
The best performance of the night would have to go to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who teamed up with Madonna and Queen Latifah to create history. While they performed ‘Same Love’, Dozens of Couples were married in a powerful ceremony on stage.
Kiwi superstar Lorde and hit producer Joel Little did us New Zealanders proud, the unstoppable duo ruled the Grammys after winning Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the year. At just 17 years old, it seems Lorde’s phenomenal music career has only just begun. Macklemore, Pharell and Country Star Kacey Musgraves were also among the long list of winners.

Eye Series
Blue eyes look incredible when paired with Browns and Gold’s (these colours will ensure that your blue eyes really 'pop'). If you want your eyes to stand out even more you can try using metallic or winged black eyeliner.
Blake Lively, Zooey Deschanel and Miranda Kerr are some well known blue-eyed celebrities and just like them you can perfect a makeup look suited to your amazing eyes.
 1. Using a cream highlight, brush onto your lid and brown bone.
2. Find a subtle metallic gold shadow and press lightly halfway through your lid starting from the outer edges (blend into the cream shadow). You can also use this gold as an eyeliner, place a thin amount under your lower lash line.
3. Choose a dark matte brown and blend well throughout your crease.
4. Finish off this look by placing a peach shimmer in the inner corners of your eye. Using liquid or pencil eyeliner, draw a thin line on the top of your lid.
(Try this look using alternate shadows… Silver, Peach and Bronze are your go to colours.)

Ten minutes with Ruby Frost!
Tumblr media
Kiwi pop royalty Ruby Frost rose to fame in 2009 when she won the prestigious music competition MTV 42Unheard. Since then she has released a killer album, toured with the likes of Garbage and Evermore and was chosen as one of the four judges in Season One of The X Factor NZ. We talked about her recent collaboration with David Dallas, and that trademark pink hair…
How did you get started in music? Where did your passion develop?
I started getting into music when my parents bought me a guitar for Christmas one year… They have always played in bands, so growing up it was very natural to want to make music as well.
Growing up, were you influenced by your parents love of music? Has it always been the career you wanted to pursue?
Definitely, I was always waiting around for them at their band practices, or watching them record with their bands, or watching other musicians perform at Parachute (festival). In our family, music is everything…
What are some of your other major influences?
When I really started getting into buying music, artists like Radiohead, TV On The Radio, Bjork and The Beatles became major influences for me. And lots of songwriters with strong voices; Bob Dylan, Bowie, Elliot Smith… I’ve had many obsessions.
Tumblr media
You have played alongside Garbage, Fun, Nero and Diplo..What has been one of your most memorable times onstage?
I will always remember playing at the Vector for the first time in 2011, that was a cool experience. We had just got back from recording overseas, and then to be able to come home and play there was an incredible feeling.
What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
For me, any songwriting accolades are really cool. I remember getting a prize in the John Lennon Songwriting comp a few years ago which felt amazing because he has always been one of my heroes.
So how has life been after X Factor?
I’ve been trying to relax! That was full on! It felt all-consuming, we had all those mentoring activities and were always trying to come up with cool ideas for our contestants… it was an incredible job, but I’ve been trying to take the pressure off. I’ve been in Sweden for the past month, starting to write again for my next album and just meeting music makers over here. It’s been nice to get away from everything.
How did it feel when you got the call from Simon Cowell?
Relieved! They didn’t confirm I definitely had the job until the very last minute, so I was putting off my plans for the year and hoping he would sign me off. His company signs off all the major decisions like that, which was kind of nerve-wracking.
The show was great and had everyone hooked. Will there be a season 2?
I have no idea actually! But it was an incredible thing to be part of, it was an honour to work with so many talented creative people. It’s one of those weird things I will tell my grandkids about (I’ll still have a pink rinse then…)
Tumblr media
Every time I have seen you on TV your hair is flawless, what are some tips and tricks you can share with us?
It’s always important to protect your hair from the heat! I had a lot of curling irons and heat put on my hair during the show, and it’s dyed so much that it can break if I’m not careful. But I’ve been using V05′s Hair Spray Styling Heat Protect which is helping stop damage. And on off days (to stop the colour fading) their ranges of dry shampoos are good.
What are your beauty and hair essentials?
I love M.A.C. Makeup; they have such great eye shadow colours, especially their pressed pigments. And hair, I’ve been using the V05 Give Me Texture range, it messes up the curls nicely and makes your hair look a bit grungier.
Tumblr media
Your album ‘Volition’ was a huge success, what was it like working together with Chris Zane?
Chris was awesome to work with; we finished the album in two weeks in New York so it was a very fast process. He has a great ear, and mixed the album nice and raw with tough, loud drums so it had a bit of grit. I learnt a lot from watching him produce.
Can you tell us a little bit about your collaboration with David Dallas?
I met David at Rhythm & Vines a couple of years ago when we played on the same stage, and thought how it would be so cool to one day do something with him. So I wrote a chorus idea randomly without even talking to him about it, but by the time it was finished he had reached out anyway and suggested we work together! I just sent him the file (hilariously recorded in my bedroom), and his awesome team Fire & Ice fleshed out the production a lot more and he worked his magic on it. I really love what he does so it was awesome that it worked out.
Do you currently have any plans for a new album?
I’ve started writing for the next album. It’s so great to be over here, because Sweden makes the best pop music in the world. I’m just trying to soak everything up over here, and learn from the masters. Seriously it feels like everyone is a songwriter or producer here, it’s a way of life. I want to produce a lot more of this album myself, so it really sounds like me. So I’ve been nerdy, sitting at my laptop for too many hours.

Ten Minutes with the amazing Lisa Crawley!
By Sophie October 21, 2013
Since the release of her new album ‘All in my Head’, Lisa Crawley has been one busy lady. The kiwi songbird has been working non-stop, writing and releasing music whilst still finding the time to appear on popular TV Shows such as Go Girlsand X Factor. We had a chat with Lisa and she gave us a glimpse into her crazy world of TV and Music.
Your new album has just been released. Can you give us a glimpse of the recording process?
I began ‘demoing’ the songs from late last year and continued to work on them up until I went into the studio. Studios can be expensive so I wanted to have everything prepared and know exactly what I was doing in there so I didn’t waste time and money. I hired a band who happened to be very talented friends of mine and we spent a week at Revolver Studios (an amazing studio out on a farm in Waiuku) ‘tracking the songs’, doing all the drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals and the second week was spent redoing a few things, adding strings and horns and ‘mixing’ the songs getting them all ready to go! There’s quite a bit of waiting around and listening to songs over and over again, it’s easy to lose perspective on what sounds good after awhile but luckily my producer Djeisan Suskov was there through the whole process to offer his ideas and advice etc. I stayed out on the farm overnight sometimes which was a bit spooky!
What inspired ‘All in my Head?’
I tend to leave naming things to the last minute, including what I was going to call the album. I went through all my lyrics of the songs and found that the lyric ‘all in my head’ was in the track ‘What Would I Give’ and also in ‘Taken’ there’s a lyric about wishing you could hold someone in the same way that you hold them in your head…so it seemed to be a bit of a theme. I guess I have a tendency to create situations in my head that aren’t necessarily true, worrying about things etc, so ‘All In My Head’ seemed to be quite fitting.
Tumblr media
How would you describe your sound? I would say that I write pop songs with a folk/soul influence. I like a lot of old 60s music and girl groups etc and I think that has come across in this album, according to various reviews anyway!
‘Elizabeth’ has a lot of memorable lyrics, is there a story behind the catchy single?
Elizabeth is about the struggles of being a female musician, many of which I’ve experienced. I feel like you have to work a little harder to prove your musical ability as at many of my gigs people assume I’m not actually playing the piano or offer advice about my outfit or singing style etc that isn’t asked for, I guess everyone is going to have an opinion!
Do you have any favorite tracks from the album?
My favourite tracks are Imagination, Elizabeth and Stranger.
The music video for your latest single ‘Tide is Low’ has just been released, what was it like to film? Did you take a turn on the roller skates?
I went there a few days earlier to get some practice in! I’m by no means a professional! It was a fun shoot with lots of great people involved but it was freeeeeeezing and I got a bit sick afterwards. No regrets though!
What was it like working on the set of X Factor?
It was interesting to be part of the behind the scenes environment while working on X Factor. I don’t think the majority of the public realise how much the show has to follow a formula, how much of the on screen drama/tears is actually started by production creating a certain scene/ asking questions that are going to stir the contestants or trigger something. A lot of it is purely for entertainment. My job was to play piano for the contestants on the judges retreats, so I kept away from most of it apart from when it came to filming the retreats. It was awesome to travel and be part of the experience without having the nerves of actually entering the competition! Writing my own music is definitely what I’m passionate about but its great to get paid for my musical skills – all those years of piano lessons paying off!
Tumblr media
X Factor wasn’t your only stint on TV; I remember seeing you on ‘Go Girls. Is it strange watching your self on screen’?
I’m almost used to watching myself on screen after 10 music videos, a few roles on Shortland Street and TV ads, but it is still weird! My Go Girls Character was called ‘Juicy Lucy’, a very flirtatious young lady…extremely different to how I was at high school so it was a bit of a challenge. A fun challenge though!
What has been your most memorable gig to date?
Opening for John Mayer around NZ was pretty awesome and probably the biggest crowd I’ve played to so far. I’ve done some strange gigs, playing in Chinese nightclubs and shopping malls etc. I’ve just come back from an Australian tour and was playing to a metal/rock audience for one of my shows, which I thought was going to be very challenging, but they were actually a very polite audience.
Have you always known music was what you wanted to pursue?
I’ve been playing music since the age of four so it’s not surprising that it’s such a big part of my life so far. I trained in drama and dancing all throughout high school and was sure that I was going to have a career in musical theatre. I got into a school overseas and even with a scholarship couldn’t afford to move there for 3 years. I was heartbroken at the time and thought no other opportunities would come up for me. Things have a strange way of working out sometimes though, I’m really glad that I’m writing my own music and offering insight through my songs rather than just singing someone else’s songs forever, I’ll be doing that too as I love performing other songs etc but I feel like things have worked out for the best. I still want to be Sandy from Grease though, even if it’s when I’m in a retirement home and we’re doing an old folks version. We’ll see.
Lisa’s second album ‘All In My Head’ is out now and available for purchase onBandcamp. Make sure you keep an eye out for her performances in Australasia, Europe and America later this year! You can also follow Lisa on Facebook and Twitter.

Shaaanxo and her Favourite Things..
Shannon Harris (Shaaanxo) has certainly accomplished quite a bit since her first makeup tutorial on Youtube years ago. Now she is 21, has thousands of fans and her very own range of makeup brushes, ‘xoBeauty’.
I had a little chat with her this week to find out a bit more about her favourite things, Sophie x
Eat: I looooove Kumara chips and Aioli. I could eat a bucket full! And cheese. And ‘Chilli Flavoured’ anything. I would defs eat Chilli and Cheese covered Kumara Chips, smothered in Aioli….
Buy: Sounds weird, but my new lighting I bought off eBay. I love being able to film at any time of the day or night! I used to be so limited when it came to filming because I used sunlight. Also, my pup Zeus’ new superman outfit. SO CUUUTE!
Tumblr media
Entertain:
I love watching a TV series so much more than a movie! At the moment I’m loving Breaking Bad, Dexter and Shameless. Its kind of funny, I just realised I love programmes with Drugs, Murder and Disfunctional Families the most… HAHA!
Know: My favourite quote goes something along the lines of…. ‘Don’t give up on your dreams because they will take time to achieve – the time will pass anyway’. It’s so true! I think so many people are intimidated by their own dreams, but if they just take baby steps….. It will all come together. It doesn’t matter if it will take 10 years. Those 10 years are passing anyway, so you might as well come out of it on top!
Tumblr media
People:
My Mum! She raised me well with good ethics and encouraged me to dream big! She is a huge part of my life and she helps me out so much. Also, my Boyfriend Hamish. He keeps me motivated all the time and keeps me so positive.
Place: I love the beach. I want to own a house on the beach one day, so I can constantly see the water and sand. It’s my favorite place! Next… I want to go to Bali!

New Zealand’s Reigning Lady
Our very own Lorde has made music history. The kiwi songstress has had mass success over in the States and the evidence is clear. Beating the likes of Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, Lorde has jumped through the US Billboard Charts to hit number one. This achievement makes Lorde the youngest solo artist to top the Hot 100 and the only kiwi to make it to the top of the Billboard’s Hot 100 list.
She sure has been busy, performing alongside the likes of Kanye West and making friends with Hollywood stars (Rebel Wilson, Chloe Moretz).
But it seems she is not going to be slowing down any time soon. Her first album‘Pure Heroine’ was released on September 27th and is getting glowing reviews.
There was another revelation to boost her success this week, it has been revealed that Lorde will also be featuring on The Hunger Games: Catching Firesoundtrack. It’s official, she’s taking over and she is here to stay.
Pure Heroine is available now on Itunes.

What's In Your Handbag - Shannon
Tumblr media
Recently I had a wee chat with beauty guru Shannon (Shaaanxo on Youtube).
She let us know some of her must have items and what she keeps in her handbag!
  MUST HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS:
"I usually have a huge range of lip colours in my purse. Each time I wear makeup, I put the lipstick colour I'm wearing in my bag (and then I forget about them, so I get quite a large collection building up in there). I currently have BareMinerals Buxom lip-glosses, a Stila lipstick and a couple of MAC lipsticks. All of them are the same peachy pink hue. Don't ask why I have so many lipsticks in the same colour range... Because I don't know either… I’m obsessed."
  SHE CAN'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT:
"iPhone, keys, eftpos card... I'm basic when it comes to the necessities. I just happen to carry around a large amount of rubbish as well.... Receipts, rubbish, gum, pens..."
  FAVOURITE HANDBAG:
“I have two. My Michael Kors tote (If I'm travelling) - It has a laptop compartment, which is useful, or my Melie Bianco handbag that is a nice bone beige colour.”
  GADGETS:
“I really only use things on my iPhone these days - maps, the Lorna Jane app if I'm walking my dog, and Instagram of course. I live on Instagram @shaaanxo”
  OTHER ESSENTIALS:
“If I'm going out for the day I always bring bandaids in case of any blister disasters (story of my life) and a big bottle of water. Also, if I remember, I bring a phone charger with me. I live on my phone/social media, plus I can't make my way around Auckland without my maps app, so if my phone goes dead when I'm out and about.... It's pretty lame. Haha”

Ten Minutes with the Hurricane Kids…
Formed in 2012, the Hurricane Kids are the latest band to enter onto the NZ Music scene. We had a wee chat with lead vocalist Olly to find out a little more about their latest single and what their music is all about…
Hi Olly, first things first…Who are the Hurricane Kids?
Hurricane Kids are a power pop band based in Auckland who loves to spread the party and positivity through our music!
How did you all meet and when did you decide to form your band? Was it something you have always planned to do or a spontaneous decision after a few beers?
Well basically I decided to bring all my cool musician friends together to form a band! (Rich Bryan – Guitar, Willy Henderson – Synths, Cameron Dick – Bass and Karl Woodhams – Drums). Putting the band together was something I had been meaning to do for quite a while.
What inspired you to become musicians, any major influence?
I think in our band there’s a range of influences from being creative to performing and also the more technical stuff like recording, production and live sound! At the time we started we were really into bands like Hot Chelle Rae and Simple Plan and didn’t see much of that style of music happening here in NZ. So we thought we could bring that flavour and fun to NZ!
Any special story on how you came up with the name ‘Hurricane Kids’?
Well basically we needed a name so Cameron (our bassist) and I went to have a late night dinner at Denny’s and after much discussion, curly fries and hot tea we finally we landed on Hurricane Kids. It seemed to really capture what we’re all about – high energy, youthfulness and having fun.
Can you tell us a little bit about your catchy new single ‘Over’?
On the surface our new song “Over” is about someone who won’t let go of a relationship that’s ended but it’s also really all about moving forward in life and not letting sucky people pull you down.
The music video is hilarious, what was it like on set?
It was a lot of fun and really exciting to be working with some amazingly talented people. Filming the scenes of me dressed up as a girl were pretty crazy, a lot of jokes and laughs were going down!
How exciting was it to record at Justice Studios and what was it like to work alongside Jimmy Wong for ‘Live It Up’?
It was awesome! I’ve worked with Jimmy for the last couple of years and he always brings so much musicality and depth to our songs. We really focused on writing the best songs for the “Live It Up” EP and we’re really proud that it’s done so well!
How do you get inspiration to write new songs?
Inspiration comes from so many different places..Sometimes it comes from a piano riff or a drum groove, or even a line from a movie!
What were you doing before the Hurricane Kids?
I was studying a degree in music at Auckland University as well as playing for artists like Jamie McDell and doing some solo stuff.
What do you hope to achieve in the near future?
I think we all really want to keep getting Hurricane Kids out there and making sure more and more people are exposed to what we do and who we are!
Which musician would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to work with Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic!
Do you have any plans for a tour?
Nothing set in stone at the moment but we are eying up Japan and Australia!
Follow The Hurricane Kids for a sneak peek at the bands latest adventures:

‘Over‘ is now available on Itunes! Their EP ‘Live It Up‘ is also available for purchase.
