So Close To Magic

Summary: spending hours in a pumpkin patch with unresolved feelings for the other leads to some great things in the rain.

Word Count: 653

“I am gonna get the biggest pumpkin!”

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should,” I reply with a smile, taking my dear friend’s hand in my own as I drive. 

Nat gives my hand a squeeze, “should my jack o lantern be cute or scary?”

“I say scary,” turning into the exit lane I add, “you do, do scary best.”

“You're right,” she nods, “okay scary it is.”

“We’re almost there,” just as I say that the sign comes into view, ‘Gardner’s Pumpkin’s’. I park in the dirt parking lot and we make our way out to the main pumpkin patch.

As we strolled through the rows of pumpkins, my heart hammers in my chest as she picked up a tiny pumpkin, examining it closely,"isn't this place amazing?" 

I nod swallowing, “yeah, it's beautiful… and you are too."

“Wait, did you just call me beautiful?” 

“I—I did,” I whisper.

“Well you're beautiful too,” she replies. My cheeks burn, “hey we can make some pumpkin pies too. I've always wanted to try that."

“We could, I’m sure my mom has a recipe,” I pick up a small pumpkin, "I've heard that the key to finding the best pumpkin is to give it a little kiss for luck." 

Nat laughs and replies, "really? Well, I suppose I can't argue with tradition." 

She reaches for another pumpkin and gives it a soft kiss. I pick another one up and peck it. We spend the next several hours in the pumpkin patch, selecting the biggest and most perfect pumpkins we can find while we laugh and share stories. 

When the sun begins to set, dark clouds gather, casting a cold shadow over the vibrant patch of pumpkins. The first raindrops patters on the ground, we seek refuge and huddle under the eaves of a rustic barn.

With a breathless laugh, our eyes meet for a moment. The awkward silence that follows was broken by Nat's soft voice, “I've always loved coming to the pumpkin patch, even when it rains. It's like a magical place, don't you think?"

I nod with a smile, “yeah, it is a perfect place to make memories."

As the rain continued to fall, we sit on a bale of hay, our shoulders almost touching. I can't help but steal glances at the wet hair clinging to her cheeks. I sigh and look at the rain, “you remember that time we came here a few years ago, right? When we built that silly scarecrow and laughed until we cried?"

Nat laughs, “it was one of the best days of my life."

The rain drums harder on the barn's tin roof, drowning out everything except me and Nat. Her hand trails closer to mine, our fingers brushing. I look at Nat, I can't deny the truth anymore. 

“Hey, what's up?” when I don't look at her she cups my cheeks in her hands, “look at me, tell me.”

I look up at her, "you make me the best kind of nervous, and I'm pretty sure you do it on purpose…"

Her face turns pink, "I have something to tell you. Something I should've said a long time ago."

My heart races as I squeeze Nat's hand, “yeah?”

"I've spent all this time in this pumpkin patch, not just because I love it, but because I love my time with you," her voice trembles. "These feelings I've had for you... they're not just friendly feelings. They're... more."

My lips curl into a smile, “I’ve had those same feelings for you for so long. I've just been too scared to say anything."

“Really?” She asks.

I nod and lean in, being met halfway in a nice kiss. If magic is real it's in our kiss. Nat pulls away first and grins. I caress her cheek, “this is now my favorite visit.”

“And there will be many more.”
