"We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed." -Nessmuk

If it is your intention to strike camp and make a fire, make sure to bring along a good fire kit. The more ways you have to start a fire, the better. God knows what calamities mother nature will throw at you.

Getting the fall pack together took no less than an hour. Each item has been carefully chosen to fulfill a roll in one of four systems. Food, Water, Fire, and Shelter are the cornerstones of a woodland camp. Know what you can do with what you have. If you do not, you will arrive at your campsite disoriented, spinning in circles wondering where to start. Claim your spot, get your equipment out of the elements. Gather your water before you start your fire and tend to it properly. Eat a simple meal, get comfortable, rest warm and dry.

Katadyn Water Filters are excellent products. My entire water system fits inside the Pocket Edition bag. In the past, I would go down to the water with my empty water pouches and filter the water right out of the lake. When it is late in the night, this crucial task becomes a burden, especially when the temperature is low. My plan now is to fill my new 1 gallon MSR dormitory pouch directly with the unfiltered water and haul it back to camp. I can filter the water from the comfort shelter at my leisure. And the whole system fits nicely into the Katadyn pouch .
