We are finally ready to publish our 2nd edition of the Hamlet Legion: a birthday zine dedicated to celebrating HamletMachine's birthday!

12 artists and authors came together to share how one artist's unrelenting perseverance and kindness has affected (and still does!) their creative journeys! We celebrate not the sentimental meaning surrounding HamletMachine's works, but also the creator themself. And now we invite all of you to join us in offering our joy to a creator who has offered us theirs for so many years!

Racism in the whump community

I'm a tired black woman and I wanna talk about the kind of racism i see in the whump community. This isnt a callout, but a discussion and its an invite for white people to listen not talk over me.

Whump is when characters get hurt, this can be from fandom or with original characters, so I'll go into each of these starting with fandom.

Fandom racism is well documented, white people will actively ignore or hate on people of colour, especially black women, both the characters and the actors. Black, Latino and Asian characters are consistently hated or ignored, especially in whump. As someone who runs a poc whump blog, I have to make gifs (as someone who doesnt have the talent or energy to do that) for franchises like the fucking MCU, where characters like Sam Wilson or T'Challa, who have massive fanbases outside of tumblr/whumpblr, but here theyre irrelevant. Black stories and pain are irrelevant in whump.

Been in servers where people will talk about a whumpee by showing pictures of a group of people, no one has to mention theyre talking about the white man in the group, we all know ofc whumpees are white men. The poc in the shot are the background, even if theyre the main characters, to a white person eyes, they arent relevant, arent important.

And OC content isnt free from this either. Instead of ignoring people of colour, we are simply not present. And whump is derived from fandom so its clear that these are linked. You dont like it when we're there, and make worlds where we are not. And it's not about intention, maybe youre just worried about writing poc, maybe we just dont come to your mind at all. But the effect, the consequence, is more important on poc in the community than any of that.

And when you do write us, you feminise and fetishise asian men, you make black men hypermasculine or subject them to poilce brutality. You make black women the sassy best friend type, the black mama to serve white people. We're never the centre of the story.

And whiteness is glorified. In its pale innocence, in the beauty of blue eyes or brown hair. The whumpee was made to be white and for white people to project themselves on. Not for poc. This wasn't made for us.

Something that is so innocent, so obvious to a white person can be harmful to a person of colour and the problem isnt an individual, its a structure. Fandoms are structurally white, the whump community is structurally white. Places white people go to turn their brain off, to "escape" always mean that its a space where poc cant escape. Because you let the racism that is in you not get addressed, and where no one is addressing racism, it flourishes.

I really loved it, the whump was great and the art style SUPER PRETTY! Just wondering if it was removed on purpose or if i just can't see it anymore? i took it down because i started feeling a bit anxious! not because of anything/anyone in particular - i think i have a hard time posting something and seeing people interacting with it haha. dumb lizard brain. i ended up leaving this blog for a while but i still like to come back and check on it from time to time. thank you for the kind words :) hope you're doing well too!

a caretaker notices a terrified whumpee rubbing their cheek against a soft cushion. when the whumpee sees the caretaker watching, they quickly stop, worried that the cushion will be taken away. gradually, the caretaker collects soft things to give the whumpee: blankets, soft toys, fluffy socks. the whumpee is afraid to touch them, scared to ruin them, but the caretaker reassures them. one day, the caretaker comes home to find the whumpee deeply asleep, wrapped in the soft blankets :)

One word prompt: silence? :)

The whumper strapped the muzzle over the whumpee’s face even as the whumpee tried to yank their face away. The smell of varnished leather assaulted their nose as the whumper fastened the straps over their mouth and nose. leather straps were looped around the back of their neck. Strands of hair were pulled from their roots as straps were wrapped roughly around their head. The whumper yanked, buckling the muzzle tight. The pressure cut long lines into the whumpee’s face that they knew would leave a mark. he whumpee whimpered softly, jaw locked shut tight. They reached up to relieve the pressure, but the whumper caught their wrists. 

“No,” they said. “Touch it and I’ll know.” They pushed the whumpee’s hands into their lap and ran their hands over the muzzle.  “Marvellous,” they murmured. 

The whumpee flinched away, breathing heavily through their nose. The hands on their face gripped tighter. “Don’t turn away now, you look so lovely now that you’re finally silent.”

Aedan Part 9

Aedan sat in his cell, grooming his left wing back into some semblance of order, and thinking about what he was going to do when Robb brought him out again to ask him about changing sides.

Go back and think about your position, he’d said. As if Aedan had anything else to think about in here? He clearly hoped, or assumed, that once Aedan had thought about it he would see things Robb’s way.

You’ll have to tell him no again, obviously, he thought. Just with less crying this time. Aedan was ashamed of how he’d gone to pieces, wished he had explained in a more dignified way, but he hadn’t changed his mind on that much. The only kind of ‘help’ that Aedan could possibly give to the humans was to make them more effective at fighting wingfolk. Was this really any different to what Lucas had done?

No. That probably wasn’t fair. Robb thought he was looking out for Aedan, trying to help him.

But Aedan still had to tell him no.  

And then what would happen? Then they’d kill him? And send his head back to his uncle.

Aedan let his hands fall still in his lap. He stared, dry-eyed, at the opposite wall and wondered if he had it in him to be brave and hold his head high while that happened. It was like something out of a story, a dramatic tale of bravery and tragedy.

“Right this way, sirs.”

Light flooded the large room when the door opened, and two strangers entered, followed by the slaver. Chains clattered in the room as the captives fought to free themselves, some snarling, others just glaring.

“We have a wide variety of slaves to choose from. The orcs and gnolls are particularly useful for your type of work.”

“Not necessary this time.” One man said with a dismissive wave. “We’re looking for cleaning slaves. Ones who can get into small areas and won’t make much fuss.”

The other man had taken to wandering about the room, looking into each cell. He was met with cursing and threats and snarls in most, until he came up to a large cell that almost appeared empty, except for a soft rattling of chains from the far corner.

The elf was small and thin. Unlike every other creature in the room, he wasn’t fighting the chains, he was trembling in them, terrified. His blue eyes grew wide as the man walked closer, and he cowered back with a whimper. His ears drooped, pulling some hair away from his face to reveal a mark over his eye and cheek. A noble tradition in most Elven clans. The boy must’ve been royalty.

“What’s the story with this one?”

The slaver turned and grinned. “Ah, this little elf is an interesting case. He’s from a royal family somewhere in the Northern woods.”

The first man peered at the elf before turning back to the slaver. “Did you capture him yourself?”

With a shake of his head, the man grinned. “That’s the interesting part. His family sold him to me. Disgraced little prince, I suppose. They didn’t tell me what he did and I didn’t ask.”

As they talked amongst themselves, the elf pulled his knees to his chest, tears slipping down his face. He was scared… so scared.

“We’ll take him.”

Reunion lovemaking. Whumpee and their loved one absorbing each other’s warmth, tasting each other’s quiet tears of release and relief, breaths hitching as recovering injuries strain against the motions. Just glad that, after everything they’ve gone through, they’re still here to complete and hold each other.
