Ocean acidification, also known as the ‘Evil Twin of Global Warming’ refers to the ongoing decrease in the pH level of the Earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. It is estimated that 30-40% of the carbon dioxide from human activity released into the atmosphere dissolves into our oceans, rivers and lakes. This rise in pH threatens the delicate balance that is required for overall health and biodiversity of our freshwaters and oceans.
With oceans receiving more federal attention than they have in over a decade, Ocean Caucus events put big ideas about ocean health front and center in our nation’s capital, covering everything from acidification, incredible Arctic marine areas, and innovative technological and social approaches to conservation. The All-Party Ocean Caucus is an important forum for leaders to tackle broader issues impacting Canada’s ocean agenda. In fact, this kind of shared dialogue remains more important than ever as the country works towards ambitious conservation goals, including its aim to increase the number of protected marine and coastal areas from 1.2 per cent today to 10 per cent by 2020.

These two numbers, 76 and 20, show why the coming days are so important. March 21st - 27th is #CanadaWaterWeek. It’s time to start thinking and making a difference about all things Freshwater - from health and threat indicators to the creatures and communities that depend on freshwater.
40% of the world’s 30,000 recognized fish species and over 100,000 invertebrates are found in freshwaters. But this diversity is at risk. Extinction rates are considerably higher for freshwater than for terrestrial and marine species. Populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish have declined by an average of 52%. Populations of freshwater species have suffered an even worse fall of 76%. Present-day extinction rates are comparable to those seen during the greatest mass extinction events in the Earth’s history, and ever-fewer new species are being formed.

As the winds subside every year around Christmas time, the temperature of the water along the coast of Ecuador and Peru increases. Although the degree and extent of the warming varies from year to year, it is part of the natural annual variation in the oceanic circulation. The name El Niño, Spanish for The Little Boy, was given to this warming by the Peruvian fishermen as a reference to the Christ Child.
When the water temperature increased, the fish departed for colder waters and the fishermen used this time to repair their boats and nets.
While the El Niño Effect naturally occurs every 3-7 years, because of global warming, the intensity and persistence of the El Niño Effect can be anywhere between 9 months and two years, with extreme and increasingly damaging measures over time.

While El Niño events cause milder weather and sea levels to rise along the Pacific coastline of the Americas, Australia and Indonesia experience cooler waters that result in sea levels dropping, bringing dryer and warmer conditions to the region.  During the El Niño event of 1982-1983, the drop in the sea levels surrounding the Pacific Islands resulted in the exposure and death of the upper layers of precious coral reefs and marine life in these already shallow waters.
But despite many corals’ rock–like appearance, they are actually very fragile and easily damaged by both direct dangers (i.e.: boat propellers, divers and fishing nets) and indirect threats (i.e.: water quality and clarity). Extreme changes in the water’s temperature, whether these be warmer or colder, exposes coral reefs to extreme stress which can be fatal, if prolonged.

El Niño events have widespread effects on the economy (fisheries, agriculture), aquatic life food chains, and even disease outbreaks. As a result of higher rainfall, flooding and milder temperatures, a rise in mosquito transmitted disease outbreaks such as Malaria, Dengue Fever, Rift Valley Fever, and Australian Encephalitis have been observed.

Who is the oldest human to have lived, and does where one live play a contributing factor to their longevity?
Life expectancy refers to the number of years a person is expected to live based on the statistical average.
According to 2013 World Health Organization findings, the highest average life expectancy is 84 years for men and women living in Japan; 87 years for women and 80 years for men.  Contrary to that, Sierra Leone is the country with the lowest average life expectancy of 46 with both men and women.
However, DALE, Disability-Adjusted Life Years is a new system that measures a truer picture of the health of a country rather than simply studying its death rates, says WHO.
