I was rewatching s2 and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to realise Jonathan and Will both lied to Nancy and Mike to save their relationships (with Steve and El.)

This scene opens with Nancy saying “Steve asked you to take me home?” (After the party) which I hadn’t noticed before but obviously Jonathan lied.

And here Will claims that El ASKED him to paint the dnd painting for Mike- again, a lie to save a relationship that Will and Jonathan both believed best for Nancy and Mike.

it’s kinda tragic that el fell in love with mike by watching him look for will because she’d never known love like that, and she saw mike’s capacity for such intense love, and, rightfully so, wanted it for herself. but she never got that version of mike. it’s more apparent in s4 than anywhere else, but all el has really ever wanted is for mike to love her like he loves will

Thinking about how at Neil’s funeral at the school, all Mr. Nolan says about Neil is

“He was a fine student, one of Welton’s best”

Nothing about his contagious joy, his loyalty to his friends, his passion for acting, his spark that helped Todd be more alive. How utterly glowing with positivity he was even when things were hard.

Just a good student, nothing more.

Neil played the role of the diligent son in the unfair game that after he lost, he was only remembered by his score.

And maybe that’s why Charlie didn’t sing, because he knew the funeral wasn’t for Neil. It was for the student he was trying to be.
